Regards,
After months of dotting I’s and crossing T’s, the new BiKBBI initiative protected, has finally gone live.
protected is a new and innovative service that connects professional tradespeople directly with customers, protecting the relationship, ensuring that installers get paid and their customers receive
So how does it work?
a great service. There’s no middle man, clear contracts, easy to administrate and best of all, it will cost installers nothing to use!
protected works with specialist retailers to connect their customers directly with professional and approved kitchen and bathroom installers.
• As part of the sales process, the retailer discusses the topic of installation with their customer and signposts them to the protected website.
• The customer then visits: protectmyinstall.co.uk, where they are able to create a ballpark estimate with the easy-to-use protected online calculator.
• If the customer is happy with the estimate, they’ll input their details and upload their design.
• The information is then matched with the most suited KBB installer and the job is created for the chosen protected installer.
• The selected installer then undertakes a pre-installation survey, prices the job, using the App and the customer is sent an itemised quote and contract for service.
• If the customer is happy with the quotation and an installation date is agreed, they pay a deposit to confirm the details and the balance 14 days before the installation.
• The entire installation fee is now secured in an independent escrow* account before the job is started and the installers money is now protected.
• When the installation is complete the money in the escrow is released and paid to the installer within 2 hours!
• Therefore installers will no longer have to chase payments, with no purchase orders and no invoices as the App takes care of the admin. It’s an absolute win, win, win for all parties in the process as its protects retailers and consumers too.
*An escrow is similar to a joint bank account but between the customer and installer - anyone can pay into it, but both parties must agree to withdraw from it. The escrow is secure and protected by The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), so there’s no chance that either the customer or installer will ever lose money.

BiKBBI News
Summary of benefits:
• No cost – there’s no cost for installers to use the protected platform – ever!
• Connect with new customers as protected installers will receive free, quantified leads direct to their inbox.
• One customer, one lead, one installer. protected will only match one customer with one installer.
• protected installers price their own jobs. There are guidelines, but they are in control.
• Work where you want – protected installers set their own geographic territory.
• Clear, concise contracts are the foundation for protecting both parties with clarity and understanding.
• protected’s easy-to-use App reduces admin as the tech takes care of the quote, contract, sign off, invoices and payments.
• Transact directly with customers – protected ensures that there is no middle-man, it’s just the installer and his/her customer.
• No chasing invoices - money is paid into the installer’s bank account within just 2 hours of completion of the project!
• No loss of income as payment is protected, meaning protected installers will never ever again lose money to retail collapse as their money is secured in an escrow*.
• Work with some great brands – protected already works with an impressive portfolio of retailers nationwide.
• Retain your self-employed status. Installers will be their own boss and take care of their own tax affairs.
• There is no minimum commitment, protected installers can take as much or as little work as they like. It’s entirely down to them.
• Dispute support. Sadly, by the nature of installers work, disputes happen and the protected team is on hand to assist an amicable resolution.
Last word from the Editor:
The Installer magazine completely endorses this bold and ground-breaking initiative.
In what’s been a turbulent and challenging year for the nation and the KBB industry at large, many installers have been effected negatively.
The new protected scheme will do exactly what it says on the tin by protecting installer’s income whilst helping them grow their businesses by providing new work. Work that they know will be paid for and within 2 weeks!
What impresses us most is that it also protects the retailer and the consumer too, thus raising the reputation positively of kitchen, bathroom and bedroom installation. This is something that the team at The Installer Magazine applauds and therefore pledges to support, encourage and help grow to the benefit of the entire industry.
We urge our readers to take the first step by going to www.protectmyinstall.co.uk/installer to register their interest. There’s absolutely no commitment and the BiKBBI will send you an information pack with all details. You seriously have nothing to lose!

YVONNE ORGILL JOINS BiKBBI
Yvonne Orgill, a highly respected industry personality and CEO of The Bathroom Manufactures Association (BMA), has joined the BiKBBI as the latest member of their Advisory Board.
Yvonne will vacate her position at the BMA later this year after a successful 13 years at the helm. Her commitment to joining the BiKBBI board will help facilitate a closer and stronger relationship between the two industry organisations. Both the BiKBBI and BMA have shared values in raising standards, promoting educational opportunities and increasing compliance within the respective areas of the KBB industry and both fully support collaborative working strategies to benefit their members, the industry and those consumers who engage members.
BiKBBI CEO, Damian Walters, said: “I cannot begin to express how happy I am with Yvonne’s board appointment. A respected, highly experienced, much loved and proven industry leader, Yvonne, from the very beginning, has been a guiding light for the BiKBBI. There are very few people with the experience of leading a successful trade association, therefore, capturing Yvonne’s experience is the footballing equivalent of a cup final thirty yard, top right screamer into the back of the net!” Damian added: “Yvonne was one of the very first people I spoke to 15 years ago when we first scoped the prospect
of an institute for Installation. Since then, our relationship has become stronger and stronger, primarily as both organisations share the same values.”
Yvonne commented: “I am thrilled at being approached to join the BiKBBI Board as I’m a firm believer in strong partnerships that can come together seamlessly to achieve the same objectives. The BiKBBI and BMA share a similar vision - ‘compliant product installed, correctly, for the benefit of
the consumer’, a big ask

WELCOME TO THE NEW BiKBBI CAMPUS E-LEARNING PORTAL
Campus is an exciting new online learning portal providing a virtual training centre for installers to gain product knowledge, installation expertise and sector learning.
Campus allows installers to gain expertise through courses developed by KBB suppliers, giving them the chance to be seen as ‘accredited installers’ for specific manufacturers who may well then pass on installation leads. As well as courses developed by suppliers and retailers, Campus will also contain targeted business courses including Cyber Security, Manual Handling, GDPR and Social Media Awareness.
There is also a social element to Campus known as ‘Forum’, a peer-to-peer platform which allows installers to direct message other installers and supplier
experts who can offer installation support and product advice. For manufacturers and retailers, Campus represents an excellent way to connect with nearly 7000 installers, delivering training which enhances their brand and ensures correct installation for their products, in turn reducing service calls. Manufacturers and retailers can also engage with installers who have completed their training, offering further support through the discussion Forum and creating brand and product range awareness.
Campus is a collaboration between BiKBBI, KBB Diagnostic and Cortexa. Cortexa is an expert at developing e-learning solutions, creating content built to deliver fast results. Suppliers interested in content development should contact
Cortexa on 0330 024 2881, or email info@cortexa.co.uk.
Content is currently being developed and uploaded to the Campus site, and more news on its launch date will be available soon. BiKBBI will email installers when Campus goes live.
Jon Thelwell, BiKBBI Board Advisor states, “Campus is a really exciting development for installer members, corporate partners and BiKBBI. The Forum social element allows for peer-to-peer advice, supported by supplier experts who can lend their expertise to solve installation issues. At the same time, Campus e-learning provides resources for installers to upgrade their skills and knowledge – vital in today’s increasingly technical and complex world.”

SLOW START
Charlton Athletic Women FC has begun the new season slowly with goal scoring proving difficult. However, in their most recent match in the FA Continental Cup, though pitched together with Women’s Super League and full-time professional side Brighton & Hove Albion, the women’s display gives great cause for optimism and hopes of better things to come.
Playing in less than ideal conditions, Charlton impressed for the most part, looking confident on the ball and holding their full-time opponents almost until half time, but fitness told in the end as Brighton ran out comfortable 3-0 winners, thanks in part to two second-half penalties.
NEW TRADING STANDARDS ALLIANCE
The BiKBBI is delighted to confirm its intentions with a new and exciting partnership with Trading Standards.
BiKBBI Communications officer Nicole Mercer, confirmed this week that the organisation is in the process of becoming a primary authority partner with Trading Standards.
The new partnership will see
a closer relationship between the BiKBBI, its members, and consumers in a move that will provide the general public with a greater perception and increased visibility of its members and the organisation as a whole.

HOTPOINT LAUNCH #EAT YOUR FRIDGE CHALLENGE WITH JAMIE OLIVER
Hotpoint, the Whirlpool owned kitchen appliance brand, have launched the ‘Eat Your Fridge’ challenge with TV chef, Jamie Oliver.
The challenge, which is part of Hotpoint’s Fresh Thinking for Forgotten Food Campaign, is asking UK consumers to have a week of mindful cooking with zero edible food waste.
It comes off the back of Hotpoint’s long-term commitment to help consumers move to a zero-waste kitchen, and the brand are providing recipes, hacks and inspiration for consumer support. They also aim to showcase the brand’s products that can make a difference to household food waste.
To promote the Fresh Thinking for Forgotten Food initiative, Hotpoint has launched a digital campaign, which includes on-demand advertising, a landing page on the Hotpoint website plus social media stories on Facebook and Instagram. Product video advertising will also be hosted on YouTube and various news websites, to highlight the technologies
in Hotpoint appliances that help consumers reduce food waste, and drive footfall for their retailers.
Hotpoint have also commissioned research to accompany the initiative – it found that Brits cook an average of two dishes each mealtime, in order to cater for dietary requirements. This contributes to over £1 billion worth of food a month ending up in the bin, and UK households are throwing away 7 million tonnes of food every year – enough to fill 40 million wheelie bins, or 100 Royal Albert Halls.
INSINKERATOR PUBLISHES INFOGRAPHIC TO TACKLE FOOD WASTE
InSinkErator, a food disposal and tap manufacturer, has launched a new infographic, in an attempt to change consumer behaviours towards throwing edible food in the bin.
The infographic, which highlights the huge amount of food waste created by UK households, plus the reasons for households discarding the food and the emissions generated from food waste at landfill, has been created in response to shocking statistics about food waste in the UK.
The UK produces 15 million tonnes of food waste a year, with seven million tonnes generated by households.
Of the estimated seven million tonnes of food discarded by homes, nearly half of it is still edible.
74 per cent of households admitted to throwing food away due to the lack of a proper shopping list, while 24 per cent had forgotten what was in their fridge
Anne Kaarlela, Marketing Communications Manager, Europe and Russia InSinkErator, said: “We hope this infographic will have a lasting impact on consumers and encourage households to take the necessary steps to reduce the amount of food waste that ends up in the bin and finally landfill.

STUDENTS SAY CIAO TO MASTERCLASS HQ
As youngsters up and down the country headed back to school in September, Masterclass Kitchens welcomed a group of Italian students to its head office and factory for a lesson in British manufacturing.
The students visited the Cardiff HQ having travelled to the UK on a two-week programme that combines an English language course with a short work placement.
Spending time at Masterclass Kitchens gave the group an insight into the world of work, as well as the opportunity to brush up on their English skills.
“We were keen for the students to visit Masterclass Kitchens to gain some insight into how a manufacturing company operates,” explained Nicky Partridge, Centre Manager at Peartree Languages.
“Visiting the showroom and the offices gave them a flavour of a factory and office environment at a time when they are just starting to think about their future careers and university options.”
Geoff Moore, HR Manager for Masterclass Kitchens, who helped organise the visit, said: “We were only too happy to accommodate the students for the day. Having our factory, showroom and head office all on one site meant the group were able to get a great insight into all aspects of our business and gave them plenty to think about in terms of their own future career options.”

VITRA HONOURED WITH THIRD CONSECUTIVE DESIGNER KITCHEN AND BATHROOM AWARD
VitrA Bathrooms has secured another prestigious industry award, this time for Equal, developed in collaboration with Claudio Bellini. The Designer Kitchen and Bathroom Award for Innovation in Bathroom Product Design is the fifth award for VitrA from Designer Kitchen and Bathroom Magazine. Previous awards have been received for ranges created with both Sebastian Conran (Eternity Accessories) and Terri Pecora (Plural). Also, at the event internationally respected designer Arik Levy, was awarded a lifetime achievement award. Arik Levy is currently working on a new range with
VitrA called Voyage, which will be launched early next year. Margaret Talbot, Marketing Manager for VitrA said “We are delighted to receive this award for Equal. The range has been well received by both retailers and designers of commercial spaces.” Margaret added “It’s also fantastically serendipitous that Arik Levy has been honoured at the same awards.”
The new Equal collection by Claudio Bellini uses geometric shapes and monochrome tones. Using clean, minimal borders and industrial, metallic accents, Bellini’s designs emulate the structures found in modernist
architecture. Framing many pieces in the range, the sleek metal rails bring an elegant quality and create connections between the furniture using linear shapes. The collection features a mirror with integrated LED lighting, a selection of storage and washbasin units, and a wallhung WC. The contemporary nature of the delicate, angular design makes it ideal for both commercial and residential spaces.

FRANKE STAFF VOLUNTEER TO HELP GROUNDWORK IMPROVE GREEN SPACES IN GREATER MANCHESTER
Franke staff have been helping to improve green spaces across Greater Manchester after teaming up with national charity Groundwork to volunteer their time at four community projects across the city.
Twenty employees from the Franke team each spent a day working in the outdoors supporting initiatives set up by local people and backed by the charity, which aims to create a sustainable future for people, places and businesses in Greater Manchester.
Across the four volunteering days Franke staff have helped the Friends of Turn Moss in Stretford to improve their much-loved park by creating a wildflower meadow and extending their pond area. They also undertook various tasks at Trafford Eco Park, home to Groundwork’s head office, including clearing an area to make way for an outdoor classroom and laying a woodland path to
improve accessibility. Later in the month they helped to develop the allotment area at the Lighthouse Centre in Brinnington to help revitalise the area and their final volunteering day consisted of helping the Friends of Lostock Park to remove self-sown tree seedlings from a large wild flower bed, preparing a new rockery outside the group’s hut and varnishing wooden animal sculptures around the park.
Jeanette Ward, communications manager for Franke UK, said: “We see the partnership with Groundwork as a great way to make a real, tangible difference in local communities.”
Liz Edwards, from Groundwork Greater Manchester, said: “We really appreciate the hard work from the volunteers at Franke who have given their time to help another four community projects.”

FREE BACON BUTTIES AND OTHER REWARDS AS AQUALISA EMBARKS ON ROADSHOW WITH FIX RADIO
Aqualisa is taking to the road to celebrate its newly launched Installer Club, enabling installers an opportunity to earn points and rewards and even a free bacon butty. The long-established shower manufacturer has partnered with FIX RADIO on a two month long, UK wide roadshow.
FIX RADIO is the only radio station in the UK dedicated to 'working class heroes' - the tens of thousands of tradespeople working on sites and in people's homes. It entertains KBB installers, builders, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers, painters, decorators, plasterers scaffolders - in fact, anyone who makes their living in the trade. You can find them on DAB radio in London and nationwide via this website, iPhone and Android apps along with the RadioPlayer and TuneIn Radio apps where installers will enjoy a massive variety of upbeat music from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and today.
Aqualisa’s Head of Channel Marketing, Sian Brink says, “We are very excited to be hitting the road armed with bacon butties and competition prizes to speak to our customers across the country. It’s a great opportunity to spread the word about our Installer Club rewards programme and connect with installers.”
Sian added, “Each merchant visit provides an opportunity for tradesmen to discover the benefits of our bronze, silver and gold tier Installer Club and sign up to our community platform where they can start earning loyalty points for purchasing
Aqualisa products. The club is a hub for technical support, priority access to our free training, and an advice centre for growing a successful plumbing business.

CAWFC SET ABOUT FUNDRAISING FOR LYLE TAYLOR’S PINK OCTOBER
On Saturday, October 12th the team hosted Aston Villa in the FA Women’s Championship at The Valley and organised a bucket collection on the day for the campaign and Taylor himself dyed his hair pink during the month of October to raise money and awareness for Cancer Research UK.
Taylor said: “I went down to watch Charlton Athletic Women a few times last season and there is a really good family feel to their match days. They did a lot last year to help raise money and awareness for a charity that is very important to me and I’m grateful that they are getting involved again this season.
“We have tried to make this year’s campaign bigger and better, so for them to dedicate their match day at The Valley to the campaign means a lot.”
General Manager for the Women’s team Steve Adamson
said: “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer either directly or in-directly so it's an important charity to raise funds for. Lyle has been a proud supporter of the women's team and we are proud to help support him raise money for such an important charity.”
The amount raised is still being counted but last year, he raised £16,000 for the charity, in part thanks to support and fundraising from Charlton Athletic Women. Everyone connected with the club hopes that this figure will be surpassed this time around.

CLEARABEE MAKES RUBBISH REMOVAL AS SIMPLE AS A FEW CLICKS
There may be plenty of waste disposal options out there these days but Clearabee believes it has hit on the ideal solution for KBB installers. Founder and Managing Director Daniel Long, gives The Installer magazine an insight on how the company has quickly established itself in the KBB installation market
Rubbish removal has come a long way since the days when anyone having work done on their property would
dump a rusty skip outside and hope it didn’t act as a magnet to the rest of the neighbourhood.
Skips are still an option, of course, but a more forward-thinking approach and the use of new technology means there are now more attractive alternatives to installers.
Take Clearabee for example –a company formed in 2013 by entrepreneur Daniel Long. After leaving

University, and spending a brief spell as an investment banker he left to launch a digital marketing company. He identified an opportunity in the market and went out and hired his first truck: “One of my customers was a ‘man and van’ clearance company,” he explains, “and there were no large national companies in the market. So I decided to put my digital marketing experience to good use and start a waste removal company.”
Fast forward six years and Clearabee now offers same-day, on-demand waste removal to the trade, private home owners
and businesses. It prides itself on speed of service, value, compliance and a very high level of environmental standards.
Revenue for 2019 will be around £17 million, over 30% higher than 2018. Its ‘Beeloyal’ scheme is designed specifically for the trade and offering 10% credit on orders, has been very popular with KBB installers.
“They love the convenience of the man and van service, and the speed, which is same day, country-wide,” Long says. “We have tracking links, SMSs and our job photos are all viewable online, which is perfect if they have left

the site. Installers also like that we are open seven days a week, which is unusual for the waste industry, and that everything can be booked online on their phone.”
Trade customers are “Clearabee’s bread and butter”, he says, and the service is specifically tailored to them. However, the company’s largest customers are major commercial operations such as Wren Kitchens, the Co-op and HomeServe.
“We work very closely with these companies and typically build full integrations through our in-house development team. We usually cut the cost and improve the service, which is why our service is so popular and why we are regularly winning new contracts with large national brands.”
The business uses over 100 trucks which are involved in more than 600 jobs a day. It’s “a complex logistical operation and requires over 275 staff, great systems and a lot of off-the-shelf and bespoke technology – which is a sizeable investment in time and money.” Long says.
“KBB work can be demanding as it’s so varied,” Long continues, “from a small pile of cardboard to tonnes of waste from enabling work. With more and more people living in flats and shared buildings, we’re often having to go inside properties to clear waste from KBB customers, which presents new challenges, but is also a problem our clearance service is designed to solve versus a traditional skip or skip bag which we offer too.”
Observers will be pleased to know Clearabee is carbon neutral with its own UK planted forests, home to over 18,500 trees.
“We have made removing rubbish as simple as a few clicks,” he concludes, “with clear and consistent pricing which is just as desirable to individuals as it is to large nationals.
“We were founded serving small companies and individuals, and continue to serve their interests as we have grown. We have a team dedicated to trade and small business customers, together with a loyalty scheme that allows both ease of booking and significant savings.”

THE FUTURE OF ASSISTED LIVING: WHAT TO CONSIDER AS AN INSTALLER
Around 1.7m people in the UK are living in properties that aren’t suitable for their dayto-day needs, according to new research. With an aging population, more chronic health problems and an increase of multi-generational families living under one roof, our homes need to be designed and built, or retrofitted, to cater for all ages and abilities.
Experts predict the number of UK households headed by someone over the age of 65 will increase by 54 per cent before 2041 , further highlighting the need for the industry to design and build for longevity. As occupiers get older and family dynamics change, we need to create living spaces that are flexible, inclusive and suitable for everyone,
When it comes to kitchens, we need to consider the layout, fixtures and fittings so it is practical, safe and comfortable for all users – whether they are in a wheelchair, struggle to reach over worktops, or have deteriorating eyesight.
In bathrooms, appliances with safety features could be installed to reduce the risk of both young and older people scalding themselves or flooding the space, while showers, baths and other

units need to be positioned so they’re safely accessible to all.
Before now, installers may have found it difficult to source products that are both practical and stylish. However, new product ranges which aid accessible living have been developed with contemporary design in mind, making it easier to create living solutions that are functional for multiple generations, while looking good, too.
For example, linear-style induction hobs – where pans are placed in a row, rather than in a group –not only look modern and save on unit space, but they’re ideal for accessible kitchens as wheelchair users or people with mobility issues don’t have to lean over one hot pan to reach another.
With more conventional chimney hoods and extractor fans, people normally have to reach up to operate them, which can

be difficult for some. However, now installers can fit integrated downdraft oven hoods with remote control technology.
We’re seeing more homeowners in the UK opting for hot taps – like the Grohe Red – rather than traditional kettles. These don’t only save time and help reduce energy, but it’s another feature that stops the need for leaning across units and counter tops to reach kettles or other devices, which again might be a challenge for people with physical disabilities or mobility issues.
Rise and fall cupboards and sinks work well for all members of the family and combined with sleek-looking J-Pull doors, make it easier to open units and drawers from a variety of angles and heights.
Meanwhile, trolley-style mobile work surfaces provide added safety, allowing wheelchair users

It’s common knowledge that we need to build 340,000 new properties each year to meet the UK’s housing demand. An aging population and rise of multi-generational living mean we need these homes to be more flexible, adaptable and accessible than ever. This presents a great opportunity for installers to work with designers, architects and developers to be even more intelligent with their projects, considering people-centred, accessible layouts and solutions, which aid independent living
and support families of several generations who live together.
To help the industry achieve this, we’ve developed a range of services, from product and design advice through to ordering and after-sales support. And for those working with either higher volumes of projects, or spaces that require cut-to-measure components, we offer Häfele to Order, a bespoke service which allows customers to specify products to size, quantity and finish.
Thanks to the latest product innovations, creating accessible,
multi-functional spaces no longer means you need to compromise on style. There are so many flexible fixtures and fittings available on the market to create homes that meet the needs and lifestyles choices of the changing family make up. By understanding the evolving needs of households across the UK, there is a great opportunity to design and build homes that are fit for everyone – now and in many more generations to come.

SHOWERWALL'S SMALL FORMAT TILING LOOK, SO EASY TO INSTALL
Small format tiles have made a comeback in recent years, with more consumers choosing an intricate design look in kitchens and bathrooms over sleek and minimal lines. But as we all know, installing small ceramic and porcelain tiles can be fiddly, time consuming and involves no-end of grouting.
Showerwall’s Customs Collection of acrylic bathroom wall panels are a convenient alternative to traditional tiles, allowing consumers to achieve the on-trend small format tile look for less and saving installers valuable time due to their large coverage, easy-fit and design flexibility in shower enclosures, bathroom

Eight toile effect decors are featured in Showerwall’s Customs Collection, six scallop and geometric patterned designs, including the new Navy Herringbone, Scallop Blush, Scallop Coral Reef and Geo Cube, which reflect the current trend for geometric, herringbone and art-deco designs and bold blues and soft pink hues in the interior design market. Showerwall say that the Customs Collection also includes an option to produce truly bespoke designs, including tile effects, via digital printing technology.
The full Showerwall collection, which also includes large format HPL panels, caters for all tastes and comprises 69 designs including luxurious marbles, stones, granites and quartz across five stylish collections. The acrylic wall panels in the Customs Collection are available in two sizes of 900 and 1220 x 2440mm.

For any KBB installers who may be a little reticent to use bathroom wallpanels, they can be reassured in the fact that they are extremely easy and cost-

effective to install. For example, Showerwall’s smart waterproof system is designed to suit any project and can be installed in less than a day, offering a much faster fit than tiles which take around two days to install in a like-for-like space. This means a small format tile look can be achieved with ease and speed in any size of bathroom, large or small.
Although the panels are large, they are lightweight and easy to transport, handle and cut and can also be placed over existing tiles, preventing any need to take down tiles if preferred.
Once cut to fit the required space, Showerwall’s 4mm solid
acrylic panels can be fixed to a plumb level wall. There is no need to worry about grout or accessories; the panels are simply butted together using sealant to quickly create large areas of stylish decorative surface.
Low maintenance
While the ongoing maintenance of a wall surface is less of a concern for installers, a low maintenance product makes for a more satisfied customer in the long-term.
Using large format panels instead of tiles means the need to replace chipped or cracked tiles before the end of their shelf
life is eliminated. The watertight finish and the hygienic groutfree surface means there are no hiding places for mold, dirt or germs. Therefore, panels require minimal upkeep and can simply be wiped clean with a cloth.
Showerwall panels are manufactured in the UK using the latest equipment and techniques and the company say that excellent customer service is guaranteed from the point of order through to delivery and after-care. Its acrylic panels are backed by a 10-year guarantee.

56 Waste Removal Advice ESSENTIAL READING –A GUIDE FOR KBB INSTALLERS REMOVING WASTE FROM CUSTOMER SITES –REGULATIONS & BEST PRACTISE
When you carry out an installation or repairs work at a client’s property and create waste, other than hiring a skip or using a man & van waste carrier, what is the law and best practise if you take it away yourself? Jason Mohr, CEO of bulky waste collection specialist AnyJunk (www.anyjunk.co.uk), summarises the relevant waste legislation and sets out how to stay within the law.
57 Waste Removal Advice
Jason Mohr, CEO, ANYJUNK
If you remove waste from your customer’s property you must be licensed by the Environment Agency or SEPA to do so. Failure to register as a waste carrier means you are operating illegally.
58 Waste Removal Advice
1.Waste Carrier License
If you remove waste from your customer’s property you must be licensed by the Environment Agency or SEPA to do so. Failure to register as a waste carrier means you are operating illegally and, if caught, could face a large fine and seizure of your vehicle. Registering as a waste carrier can be done online in minutes and costs less than £200 – so there really is no excuse.
There are two types of waste carrier license – lower tier and upper tier. Lower Tier is relevant if you move only your own waste and it is not construction or demolition waste. For example, a kitchen installer removing off-cuts & packaging from a customer’s home. However, whether you register for a lower tier or upper tier license makes little financial difference, so if in doubt – register for Upper Tier.
2.Vehicle Insurance to move waste
Moving waste for third parties is very unlikely to be an activity covered by standard commercial vehicle insurance. So if you have an accident when moving waste, you may well find your insurance does not cover you fully, if at all. Check your existing vehicle insurance policy and if necessary get it modified. Note that there are relatively high number of vehicle accidents in the waste sector, so don’t be too surprised when your insurance broker quotes quite a hike in your premium!
3. Document each Waste Transfer
The law requires that every waste transfer between one tradesman or business and another tradesman or business must be recorded in writing and that documentary record kept by both parties for 2 years. ‘Transfer’ here means passing of responsibility between two parties rather than physically moving waste from one location to another. The documentary record of the waste transfer is typically referred to as a waste transfer note (or WTN). The regulations set out certain things it must contain and the Environment Agency website provides an example of what one looks like. The most important elements are the address, date and time of the transfer, the names, addresses and signatures of both parties and their role (e.g. producer, carrier); a description of the waste with the relevant European Waste Catalogue codes, an indication of quantity and/or weight, whether it is loose or contained, and a statement confirming that the transferor has fulfilled their duty to apply the waste hierarchy as per by regulation 12 of the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011, and the SIC code of the person transferring the waste.
Note however – unlike commercial transfers, there is no legal obligation to document the waste transfer if the customer is a householder. In other words a WTN is not required if your customer is a consumer rather than a business. Nonetheless, due to rogue trader style TV programmes, householders increasingly expect some form of documentation, so it is still good practise to provide a WTN.
4. Disposal at Licensed Facility or Secure Storage
Having loaded the waste into your vehicle, you should take it to a licensed disposal facility or back to place under your control for it to be stored securely and disposed of later.
If you decide to tip the waste, you have a duty of care to ensure that the facility you use is properly licensed to receive and process your waste. Ignorance is not an excuse. Disposal sites offering suspiciously cheap or even free disposal should obviously be avoided.
If you bring waste back to your depot or home to be stored temporarily (e.g. in a skip) for collection by a waste company at a later date, you will be subject to the Environment Agency exemption Non-Waste Framework Directive 3 – a narrow exemption designed to help builders and tradesmen manage waste efficiently. In particular, the waste should only ever be waste produced from work you have carried out at a customer’s site. The waste must always be stored securely, exclude particularly flammable and combustible materials and unbonded asbestos, and never exceed 50 cubic metres. Check also that your lease and property insurance allows you to store waste.

Don’t risk it
When it comes to waste, take time to carefully consider your operations. Operating outside of the law isn’t worth the risk. Note this is a summary article. Read the full article here www.anyjunk.co.uk
There are two types of waste carrier license –lower tier and upper tier. However, whether you register for a lower tier or upper tier license makes little financial difference, so if in doubt –register for Upper Tier.

Step-by-step
How to create seamless joins in Apollo Slab Tech
Supplied by Sheridan, Apollo Slab Tech is a full-bodied solid surface material, which is selfsupporting in 20mm or 30mm thicknesses. Like other solid surface materials, it is non-porous, hygienic, easy to maintain, and capable of seamless joins. What sets it apart is that Apollo Slab Tech is not backed by a chipboard core. This means installers can create cutouts, edge details, and curves on-site without the need for edging strips.
Apollo Slab Tech is available as either a bespoke, made to measure product; or for the more budget conscious or DIY oriented, as modular sections. These modular sections include worktops up to 3m in length and breakfast bars at 900mm wide, as well as splashbacks and upstands. Worktops can also be supplied with integrated sinks in solid surface or Stainless Steel; or simply with the cutouts already precision engineered to specification in a standard worktop size.

1. Tools Required
• Apollo Slab Tech Installation Kit
• Random orbital sander plus dust extraction equipment.
• Hand router: minimum of 1850W with ½”/12.7mm Colet size.
• Straight Trimming Router Cutter (with a guide bearing).
• Wide Chisel (minimum 1”/25mm)
• Electric saw – with fine tooth blades.
• Silicon/ Caulk Gun
2. Preparation
Most kitchens will usually have at least one joint for a corner, or an extended length of worktop. To prepare these joints, use a router fitted with a straight Tungsten Carbide cutter and a long Straight Edge. Position the Straight Edge so the router cutter will skim off about 0.5mm from the faces of each adjoining piece cleanly.
After you have prepared each piece, assemble the joint dry (without adhesive) to ensure the seams are parallel, with no gaps showing, and that the two pieces are level. Once you are happy with the result, clean each face with an alcohol wipe.
62
Step-by-step
1.
3. Bonding the Joints
Ensure your work area is dust free, and place your worktops as close to their final installed position as possible. Apply a bead of Apollo Magna glue to the faces of the join at the top and bottom edges and centerline, then push the two sections together, leaving a 2mm gap.
Apply Masking tape to the underside to prevent dripping, then apply a continuous bead of glue to the join to fill the gap. To close this gap, use G-Clamps, or suction cups to apply lateral pressure, checking to ensure correct alignment. Once clamped, a continuous bead of glue should be ejected from the joint.
4. Finishing the Joints
The glue will cure after around 30-40 minutes. After this has taken place, remove the G-clamps, then using a wide, sharp chisel, remove the glue deposits, keeping the chisel flat to avoid digging into the surface.
To finish the joint, use a random orbital sander with sandpaper pads to refine the surface gradually up to a factory-finish of 240 grit, blending approximately 600mm beyond the seam area while continually moving.
Finish this process with the abrasive pads provided for a smooth, refined result.

Learn where to delegate It can be hard to hand over tasks when you’re the sole owner of a business, but there comes a time when it’s impossible to perform all tasks in your business yourself. If you feel like you’re spending too much time on admin and too little on building client relationships and planning projects, it’s time to delegate. Professional on Houzz, Jennifer Chong of Feioi
recommends starting with certain tasks: “This could be accounts, marketing, technical drawings, social media or small admin jobs. It will allow you to take on more work and ultimately make your business more successful.”
Get the right team in place Having the right people around you will make it a lot easier to take your firm to the next level and ensure you have time to focus on growing the business. Make it your mission to hire people you can trust to continue building your businesses reputation for high-quality work. Try adverts on popular job boards and social media, as well as making sure others in your field know you’re looking to hire, as recommendations could be key! It’s also worth reaching out to colleges and schools to hire apprentices potentially looking for opportunities.
Start thinking about marketing It’s important to get your name out there, so a working website

use their skills to get certain aspects of a job completed, which would normally be outside of your remit, and work out a way to share the profits, or tap into their client base by agreeing to recommend each other’s business. To build out your professional network try reaching out to architects and interior designers via Houzz and other social media platforms or attending industry events.
Choose jobs wisely and be honest When you’re trying to grow, you can often feel under pressure to take on all the jobs that come your way, however, it’s much
better in the long term to focus on projects where you know you can do a good job.
“Being honest is very important,” explains professional on Houzz, Peter Reader of Peter Reader Landscapes, who adds. “If it will be a month before you can start, then state this upfront.” He explains that clients who really value you as a designer will wait. On the other hand, if someone wants a rush job, the whole process is likely to be stressful and compromised.

HOW TO CHOOSE A SMALL BUSINESS INSURANCE POLICY
Insurance is an essential part of protecting your business, covering you against risks ranging from natural disasters to angry customers.
Some cover is required by law, some you are contractually obliged to have and
some comes as an optional safeguard against threats to your business.
Knowing which is which and where to find them, is part and parcel of choosing the right small business insurance policy.
74
Insurance Matters
Christopher Bates, Divisional Director, Corporate and Commercial Division, UIB Group.
Legal essentials
Employers’ liability insurance is generally required by law for everyone with employees in the UK. It covers you against claims for compensation if an employee is injured or becomes ill as a result of negligence in the workplace. When deciding on a policy, consider:
• The amount covered. Most insurers will provide up to £10 million as standard.
• The assistance offered. Some policies include access to legal advice in some circumstances.
• The extras. Some policies can cover temporary employees, for example.
In addition to the above and as we all know, Motor insurance falls into the same category. Although uninsured drivers are all around us, insuring your van, car or other vehicle is a legal requirement.
Again, you need to ask similar questions when deciding on a policy:
• The cover required. Third Party only; Third Party, Fire and Theft; or Fully Comprehensive.
• The assistance offered. Some policies include access to legal advice in some circumstances.
• The extras. Some policies can cover vehicle breakdown and recovery, amongst other options.
Protecting property
Buildings insurance will often cover damage to property you own, but if you’re in retail location or industrial unit you could look for specialist insurance cover. This protects against things like damage to your stock, although you may need to seek out specific protection for high-value items. Tenant’s improvement; contents; rent payable; and loss of profits to name just a few.
Covering your back
Any customer-facing business should also consider the risk of injuring or badly advising their clients. There are two key protections against this:
Public liability insurance, which covers your legal costs and business losses resulting from accidents that happen to anyone at your premises or as a result of negligence in your work environment.
Professional indemnity is designed for advisers and professionals. It protects you if your client feels they have suffered financial losses because of negligence or mistakes in your advice or services.
Covering your concerns
You can tailor most policies to include the things that are relevant to your business, but sometimes you’ll need to buy separate insurance. For example, you may need to insure company smartphones against theft or damage, or plan for separate healthcare cover if illness and absenteeism are a worry.
Ultimately, it comes down to the protections that are right for your own business. If you wish to discuss any insurance related worries or concerns, or you know what you require and require a quotation, please contact: www.uibgroup.com | t: +44 (0)2072 641 609

A LITTLE BREATHING SPACE FROM THE 'VAT MAN'
As Brexit continues to dominate the political and economic landscape, there are still plenty of domestic issues arising on the tax and compliance front.
VAT and the Reverse Charge Mechanism
You may have read in recent editions of The Installer magazine that HMR&C were introducing the ‘reverse charge mechanism’ to all VAT registered businesses that were also registered under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).
As has often been the case in recent years with dramatic changes to the tax system, HMR&C have correctly concluded that this change was a little premature and that such a significant administrative change was too much for the sector to cope with, especially given that many businesses are battling with compliance for Making Tax Digital (MTD) and an uncertain economic climate. Some may speculate that HMR&C own systems weren’t ready to cope with policing the new changes.
As a consequence the change has been deferred by one year to the 1st October 2020. HMR&C has indicated that it is committed to implementing the new rules on the revised date. It would be prudent for all affected businesses to take advantage of this deferral and ready themselves for implementation.
Inheritance Tax
A gloomy subject for the Halloween quarter but one that is far too often ignored for fear of facing up to the issue or simply that many see this as a subject for another day.
The Inheritance tax yield for HMR&C in 2018/2019 was £5.4bn. This reflects a 15% increase in the number of Estates on death being liable to IHT. Many increases were seen in the London and South East regions with increasing property prices being a major factor. The NIL rate Band (the value of the Estate that would be excluded for IHT) is also frozen so inflation will also take its toll. Although only 4.6% of Estate were exposed to IHT, the average tax charge was £179,000. This is not a small amount for beneficiaries to suffer and can cause complications if Estate are not necessarily ‘cash rich’.
There are however various means to mitigate and plan against IHT exposure. Our recommendation is that anybody over the age of 50 should be actively discussing IHT matters with their accountant and solicitor (for will planning purposes), especially where there may be perceived net assets in excess of the NIL rate band. Don’t leave it too late.
Off-Payroll Working
A major change in off-payroll rules is expected to be implemented by HMR&C on 6th April 2020. This is effectively a follow up to the old IR35 rules that have not been as effective as HMR&C would have hoped since their implementation many years ago.
The changes will affect anybody who provides personal services, including via a Limited company, to large or medium sized businesses in the private or voluntary sector. This process has already been rolled out in the public sector with some significant tax yields for HMR&C.
Anybody who feels that they may be impacted by these changes must begin to review their contractual arrangements with their customer and discuss their concerns with their accountant. It must be emphasized that the decision on ‘status’ will be determined by the customer if they are deemed to be a medium or large business and will not be the decision of the sub-contracted business.

NEW DECORS & ACRYLIC ADDED TO NUANCE DESIGNER COLLECTION
Bushboard has launched a new Designer Collection to its already successful Nuance range which comprises eight new decors and also seven new stylish, glossy acrylics panels. Its stand out designs include an impeccably book-matched marble. All the new designs are showcased in an inspiring brochure packed with ideas.
The new Designer Collection will be a firm favourite for those who like the look of stripped brick and natural stone. There are eight designs in the range including washed brick, herringbone woods, fossil stone and washed timber.
Acrylic Nuance Marble is a time-honoured material for bathrooms. Much loved by Victorian and Edwardian sanitary pioneers, this highly attractive stone is beautiful but hard to work with. However, the striking marble slab designs from Nuance, in the new acrylic collection, reflect the natural beauty of authentic marble without the time-consuming cutting and installation problems.
Possibly the highlight of the new décors is Cararra Marble Slab, when panels are placed side by side, like the pages of an open book, the panels are mirror images. The contrasting veining matches to create one stunning, unbroken pattern. This offers a strong, large-scale symmetrical look which creates maximum visual impact without a high-end price tag or any
offsite cutting or the time or mess of ceramic tiling. There are three new marble designs within the acrylic collection plus enticingly exotic Moroccan prints (Pictured: Nuance Casablanca Classic) and subtle Hexagon Marble and Natural Finestra. Acrylic panels are just 4mm thick and have a sleek, reflective gloss finish and like all Nuance panels they are installed without joining strips or trims.
Nuance is a unique patented, trim-free system. The large format panels have a post formed outer edge that means there is no need to use trims for finishing – giving a streamlined, sleek look that suits all sizes and styles of bathroom. The tongue and groove panels can be jointed using Nuance bespoke adhesive. This makes joints which are 100% watertight and virtually invisible to the eye. The new brochure is packed with design ideas on how to use the panels to create stunning and stylish bathrooms.
“Nuance panels open a world of possibilities for exciting bathroom design” comments Paul Findley, Nuance sales manager. “Sleek and upmarket, charmingly rustic, or nature inspired – whatever the look there is a Nuance design to suit. We know that this brochure and the exciting new products and designs featured in it will provide exciting inspiration for all our customers.”

HOT PROPERTIES
Since the turn of the century, we have witnessed vast technological advancements which have helped create an “anytime, anywhere” generation. After mobile phones and other handsets, it seems the number one products on householders ‘wish-lists’ are intelligent or smart products for the home with a plethora of kitchen and bathroom domestic appliances and showers to choose from.
The digital age has influenced the heating market too, especially as it appeals to the other main area of interest of homeowners – eco-friendliness. This has inspired manufacturers to create innovations like TVR thermostats and smart controllers for heating
With the heating season fast approaching, The Installer team have spoken to Steve Birch, Sales Director at Vogue (UK) and Mark Booth, Managing Director at Gira UK, to find out their views on the latest technological trends to impact the heating industry.
Speaking on behalf of Vogue (UK), Steve Birch reveals “Features such as concealed valves, adjustable fixings or built-in thermostatic controls for practical placement and maximum user convenience, continue to gain momentum in the heating market and make perfect sense for a bathroom or kitchen where risk avoidance is paramount. Thermostatic Valve Radiators allow KBB installers

customers to heat only the space they require, allowing for heat management from room to room. TVR thermostats facilitate programming radiators to suit individual needs so they operate at chosen times of day or as and when required. Plus, this addedvalue heating solution can be preset to ensure if the temperature dips outside, your home will not.”
How has the digital age affected the range of product you are offering to the wider market?
“We recognize that home automation is developing all the time and therefore cater to this
new category of homeowner with an extensive collection of accessories and additions, which enhance the efficiency of our heating solutions. In fact, remote or digital control features are definitely on the rise, with many consumers now wanting to control interior solutions away from the home or room, in readiness for their return. In response, we offer a Controlled Heat Element for our range of towel warmers and radiators. Designed with negative temperature coefficient technology, 7 day programmable element and Eco, Boost and Safety lock features, this high-

utility component gives total flexibility, as and when your customer needs it.”
Mark Booth, Managing Director at Gira UK Ltd agrees that addedvalue features are fundamental when heating a modern home and comments, “Reducing energy use, whilst increasing comfort is of primary concern for the modern homeowner and intelligent building control makes it possible to heat the home efficiently. With the help of room temperature controllers, installer’s customers can bring each room to the desired temperature at specific times of the day or night. From the moment their alarm goes off, the automatic control will ensure that the home is heated to a comfortable temperature: able to vary between bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and living spaces. It will even identify a room that has the
sun on it in the morning and adjust the temperature down, then raise it again when the sun changes position to ensure a constant heat throughout the home.”
“Should the home be empty during the day, smart heating will automatically turn down in order to save energy that would otherwise be wasted thus reducing energy bills. Additionally, functions include lowered temperatures at night, a holiday programme, and even a party function to spontaneously extend the heating phase. You can even control the heating remotely, by using a smartphone and app so your customer can return to a pre-heated home that is set to their perfect temperature: convenience and energy efficiency are key in a smart home.”

Any other products that KBB installers should be aware of?
“Installers will be interested to know that for a greater freedom of fitting and operating efficiency for the customer, we also offer Dryline technology” commented Steve Birch, “Dryline means the radiator or towel warmer does not contain any fluids and instead, is heated by a silicone heater via a 3 core cable which is attached via a fuse spur. The Dryline element remains invisible to the eye, yet has high capacity for drying towels as well as providing heat. Furthermore, it runs independently of the heating and hot water system so you have far greater options of where to locate the radiator.”
It is safe to say that over the past few years, the market for luxury designer radiators and towel warmers in the home has rapidly expanded. Not only is there a greater amount of choice
than ever before, but in many cases the quality and design of heating products available has also improved with new technologies and innovations becoming standard fare. In fact, domestic heating is constantly needing to ‘upgrade’ and ‘refine’ if it wants to compete with the latest fashions as consumers want the latest designs, materials and technologies more than ever before.
“Those opting for smart building technology to heat their home will find the right partner in Gira for room temperature controllers with a timer clock and cooling programme. The changeover to 'heating' or 'cooling' operating mode occurs automatically via separate input. In addition, the device is capable of teaching itself heating optimisation. Heating and cooling can also be controlled and monitored via the central operating units that are handling the entire building

technology, such as the Gira G1. Better still for consumers is the Gira system controls the entire house including lighting, appliances, hi-fi, blinds, alarms and door entry as well as heating.” Recommends Mark Booth.
Steve Birch agrees and suggests, “No longer viewed as a luxury purchase, heating solutions are now an essential finishing touch and become a vital piece of bathroom equipment that can improve user comfort, help manage utility bills, reduce a home’s carbon footprint
and importantly, create a hygienic washing environment. Fulfilling a practical need in the bathroom, dual-purpose designs are increasingly popular and are now deemed a designer interior solution by many. By combining a strong, visual impact with excellent technical performance, a practical multi-rail with innovative finish or combination design that can heat the room and efficiently dry towels is striking the perfect balance between style and substance”
“The market’s continued desire for greater efficiency and the
introduction of ‘personal home energy management’, indicates that home technology is on the rise with no signs of abating.”
Steve concluded.
In summary, with many consumers now looking to heighten the level of utility, eco-friendliness, cost-saving and convenience in their home, Its worth remembering that heating provides for all of these disciplines. Heating control in particular is changing at a pace and installers and retailers would be well advised to keep abreast of the changes or risk falling behind the competition.

HAMILTON FORGES INDUSTRIAL LOOK WITH METALCLAD GRID OPTION
Hamilton Litestat has extended its popular Metalclad wiring accessories range to include grid-fixed plates. In the past, the heavy-duty design was better known for being suited to robust applications, such as workshops, garages, sheds, schools and industrial premises. However, with the industrial look currently on-trend, it works equally well in residential properties, especially warehouse studios/apartments.
The new Metalclad Grid accessories enable the installer to undertake more complex wiring projects where an
92 Feature
instant bespoke solution is required on-site. Hamilton offers a grid solution on the majority of designer plate collections across the range but now extends this to the Metalclad design to provide installers with even more switch-control flexibility that’s often required in more challenging environments.
The Metalclad Grid range is available in 1-8-gang front plates in a stylish steel finish with white inserts and white surrounds. For a contemporary seamless finish, the back boxes have
been developed to ensure a precise fit and can be surface mounted.
Like standard Grid accessories, the clip-in modules allow the exact solution for a project to be created, with printed words or symbols for appliance or function identification.
Within the range is the 20AX Double Pole Key Switch "Emergency Light Test" module, which is supplied as standard in 3-8-gang units.
KBB installers will be especially interested in the new stand-out 1 gang 13A Double Pole Key Switch
Fuse Spur, which comes in a striking red finish and incorporates a key test switch. This safety switch, designed for use with highpower electrical appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and fridges, adds an eye-catching design feature to the collection while being robust and practical. The full Metalclad range comes with a one-year guarantee for peace of mind.

Case Study
The design team at Brandt Kitchens as always, worked very closely with the client from initial consultation and design concept for the kitchen and pool house as part of a renovation project for the whole property. The brief was for the kitchen was designed to create a highly ergonomic openplan kitchen/dining/family room which blends indoor and outdoor living. The scheme is functional and spacious, maximising the scenic views of the beautifully manicured gardens.
The client wanted a highly functional kitchen to maximise flexibility for entertaining and
casual dining, this modern kitchen scheme embraces some of the latest appliances by Miele including two single ovens, a combination microwave and warming drawer, complete with two Bora Classic hobs with integral extractor as part of the island unit. The cook’s pride and joy is a traditional AGA range cooker with an integrated module to left, comprising a slow cooker and a four ring hob. For added convenience when entertaining, there is a side by side Smeg wine cooler and fridge freezer.
Scott Davis, Director, Brandt Kitchens, says “We really enjoy
exploring new challenges when it comes to kitchen design and so this was a great project to work on as we needed to incorporate a pillar into the room and work it into the design. By breaking away from the standard rectangle, we provided plenty of work space for the chef, a cosy spot for guests to perch at the breakfast bar as well as an alternative to the dining table. We clad the pillar to match the work tops and help bring the scheme together. The secret of ensuring a kitchen and living space has longevity is to really understand client’s lifestyle and tailor it to fit their individual needs for many years to come.”

SAVE MONEY! LEARN FROM OTHER INSTALLERS MISTAKES
Richard Renouf, Furniture & Floorcoverings Consultant
When he peeled back the masking tape it left light coloured marks everywhere it had been in contact with the flooring. It looked terrible. He didn’t wait for the customer to discover it, he told her straight away. He’d get it fixed. He had a friend who ‘did floors’ and he was sure it could all be sanded out.
The kitchen wasn’t the problem, but it had caused it – or rather, the installer had whilst he was putting the units in position.
He’d arrived at the customer’s home to find a parquet floor had been installed throughout the ground floor – the hall, lounge, dining room and kitchen. The smell of the oil finish was still lingering in the air, so the flooring was brand new.
He couldn’t risk damaging the parquet to he covered as much of it as he could with corrugated cardboard and taped it in place so it wouldn’t move while he was working. Then he used dust sheets to add further protection.
The fridge and freezer were both full height but he managed to part-walk and part-shuffle them into place. The rest of the units were easy enough for a oneman job and by the end of the week the job was done and it was time to clear up and clear off.
He loaded up his tools before gathering up the dust sheets. To his horror there were marks on the flooring. Some dents and scratches from the units and appliances which showed white against the medium oak finish of the flooring. Worse still, when he peeled back the masking tape it left light coloured marks
everywhere it had been in contact with the flooring. It looked terrible. He didn’t wait for the customer to discover it, he told her straight away. He’d get it fixed. He had a friend who ‘did floors’ and he was sure it could all be sanded out.
Three days later he met his friend at the house. The sander was set up, started, and turned off within seconds. The sander created more scratches and made things look a whole lot worse. ‘It’s the flooring, it must be faulty.’ His friend said and walked off the job.
98 Advice
‘What happens now?’ asked the customer.
‘I don’t know, I’ll have to see what I can find out and get back to you.’ But his enquiries just let to an impasse with the floor layers denying any issue with the flooring and the installer quoting his friend’s comments that it was faulty.
It was the customer who called me when she became angry at the installer’s lack of action. I went to inspect the job and the installer was invited along, but didn’t turn up. In my experience corrugated cardboard doesn’t offer much protection from ‘point loading’ – if all the weight of a unit is balanced on one foot when it get tipped up the force will crush the cardboard. It happens on worktops, too. The marks and scratches were really obvious, but the masking tape stripes were even more pronounced.
Fortunately the sanding had been stopped so quickly, the marks from this were no worse than the damage it was intended to repair.
With the cost of the flooring running into thousands of pounds, the cost of some plywood sheeting would have been worthwhile. And it could be kept in the van for the next job, and for a good number of jobs after that. It would take a considerable amount of negligence for an installer to mark a floor through a 4 or 6 mm overlay. But that’s hindsight.
Stopping the sanding immediately was the most sensible thing the fitter and his friend did, but this also was only discovered in hindsight. All the flooring needed was another coat or two of oil and the marks would be gone – I tested this using the dregs that had been left with the customer. The
flooring had a distressed finish anyway, so the addition of a few more indentations was pretty inconspicuous, and something the customer was happy to accept a little compensation for. The alternative would have been to rip out the entire flooring and replace it. It’s a shame the installer wasn’t to see the results, it would have been good to see smiles all round after an inspection for once.
We are responsible for the consequences of our work, so damage like this cannot be ignored. The installer was fortunate that the customer took the initiative and a reasonable solution was found as a result. But I’ve always believed there’s a better way to learn than from your mistakes: learn from other people’s mistakes, it’s much cheaper!
