Europe floods: At least 120 dead and hundreds unaccounted for As of this writing, Europe’s news stations have reported that at least 120 people have died as a result of floods that are currently sweeping parts of Germany and Belgium. Parts of the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Switzerland have also been experiencing heavy rainfall and flooding. Over 15,000 police, soldiers and emergency service workers have been deployed in Germany to help with search and rescue efforts, which are still ongoing.

L.A. County will require masks indoors amid alarming rise in coronavirus cases California’s most populous city is once again beginning to require its residents to wear masks in indoor public spaces, regardless of vaccination status, beginning Saturday night. The county remains alone in the requirement, as both the California Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue to maintain that vaccinated people do not need to cover their faces indoors. For the week-long period that ended on June 15th, when California officially reopened, L.A. County averages 173 new cases a day — on Thursday, the county reported 1,537 new cases.


Clients In the News Law requiring cars to move over to pass cyclists, pedestrians headed to Gov’s desk New Jersey news, this time! After ten years of consistent advocacy from the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and other groups, New Jersey pedestrians and cyclists will be protected by a new bill that will require drivers to move over when passing people on bikes, scooters and pedestrians. The bill was approved by the state Senate and now goes to Governor Phil Murphy.

The Biggest Story This Week.

Pennsylvania state university system merges 6 schools into 2 Six of Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities will be consolidating into two new institutions through a phased approach, beginning in late 2022. Bloomsburg, Mansfield, and Lock Haven Universities will form one institution, and California, Clarion and Edinboro universities in western Pennsylvania the other. The decision was made unanimously on Wednesday by the State System of Higher Education’s governing board, and hopes that the change will increase enrollment in the university system. New names for the schools have not been selected.
