Biden extends payment pause for student loan borrowers through January

White House: Pennsylvania would receive billions from infrastructure bill

Good news for students: originally set to expire next month, the moratorium on student loan debt has been extended by the Biden Administration through January. Since March 2020 at the start of the pandemic, student loan borrowers have been given the option to pause their monthly bills without interest accruing on debt, and 90% of borrowers have taken advantage. But, the White House has said that this will be the final extension of the pause, so beginning in February, students will once again be receiving interest on unpaid loans.

The Post-Gazette reported today that the most recent bipartisan infrastructure deal advanced by Congress would deliver an additional $11.3 billion to Pennsylvania in federal highway funding, $1.6 billion for bridge replacements, and $2.8 billion for public transit over a five year period. Pennsylvania could also find itself receiving $100 million to expand broadband coverage across the state, and $171 billion to expand an electrical vehicle charging network.

While most schools in the Harrisburg region are not currently requiring students to wear masks inside school buildings, there is still ongoing debate. The Wolf Administration said today that it would not be requiring masks in school buildings, but that individual districts could choose to implement stricter measures if they feel it necessary. This could cause a disparity in rules across the state for students returning to school.
