We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Father, Bill Frieday, on August 7, 2023, in Collingwood, ON. He was 89 years old and died peacefully at Hospice Georgian Triangle surrounded by his family. He was cared for until the end by a circle of family and a team of kind health professionals who made him feel the utmost care and comfort. We are incredibly grateful for their support and deep love for him.

Bill was a remarkable man who dedicated his life to community service. He touched the lives of many people with his kindness, generosity, compassion, and sense of humour. He was also a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, and business associate. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Some fun facts about Bill: He supplied Tim Horton with his first donut boxes. He saw the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup in 1967. He was the Master of Wexford Masonic Lodge in Scarborough, President of Wasaga Lions Club, Wasaga Beach Citizen of the Year and Publisher of Beach BOOSTER in Wasaga Beach.

Bill is predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Bev Frieday (nee Nicholls). Loving Father of Patti Kennedy and Peter Frieday (Crystal). Sadly missed by his grandchildren Cameron Hoit (Angela), Lindsay Parkinson (Phil), Taylor Hoit (Shaun), Blair Kennedy (Alyssa) & Lauren Frieday, his great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Louise Frieday of Arnprior, ON. Bill will always be remembered for his love of people, patience, creativity, leadership, and his devotion to his entire family.

Cremation and a private family gathering have already taken place; entrusted to Carruthers & Davidson Funeral Home, Wasaga Beach, ON.

Donations to Hospice Georgian Triangle would be a thoughtful way to remember Bill.

PerhapstheBiggestPartyoftheSummer!

The 'Beach Bite' crew created a fun & festive theme at the Beach Bar, to welcome the hundreds who attended the 'Christmas in July' fundraising event.

It was a beautiful, sunny & warm Thursday when the fun started at the Beach Bar, overlooking the world's longest freshwater beach. The volunteers and members of the Beach Bite team had worked all day to decorate with a fun, summer look Christmas theme. A huge inflatable Snow Man stood at the front “waving” to the beach goers on the sand. The fun kicked of early evening with live music from The Beach One Band, plus the talented performer and DJ Johnny McGlone.

The band and DJ donated their time and talents for this fundraising event, and a large table piled high with give-aways and prizes that were donated from local businesses was set up. Santa of course dropped by, accompanied by some elves, and was busy greeting as many cheerful folks as he could.

Wasaga Beach residents arrived for the fun, as the Beach Bite ladies at the gate were also welcoming many tourists from out of town who just had to come and enjoy the unique atmosphere of “Christmas in July”. All were wowed by the view, overlooking the beach, the bay and of course none were disappointed with another amazing Wasaga Beach sunset. The great entertainment kept people dancing all evening long.

It truly was a great evening of fun for all who attended, and was a great success as a fundraiser for the Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank. Over $4,500.00 was raised by this fun loving, dedicated and hard working Beach Bite crew, and we thank them and all who volunteered their time, effort and services to make this happen, perhaps the biggest party of the summer!

Cruisin' On Down The Road

There's never enough time to do all the events our Event Coordinator has for us.

Started the season off with Lilac tour with lunch in Primrose Corners in June. The club had a couple of seniors' home tours and although The Fun Run was a little damp, the day turned out to be a great success.

July was a great month for the car show crowd. Our Monday night show at The Cruisers Corner in Stonebridge Town Centre have been over the top every week. Right from the start of the season, Sherri's crew have been keeping the 200 plus vehicles & owners happy with prizes, music and with the help of our Gate Keeper of the week and his volunteers. It's been a blast so far.

CouncilAwardsRFPto Re-ImagineandRe-Develop WasagaBeach's IconicBeachfrontto FRAMBuildingGroup

Project expected to transform beachfront commercial area, advance sustainable, mixed-use urban planning approach and breathe new life into Town's tourism sector

The Town of Wasaga Beach is taking the next step to re-imagine its iconic beachfront and breathe new life into its community and economy. Today Council voted in support of a staff recommendation to award an RFP to redevelop its beachfront commercial area to multi-award-winning development firm, FRAM Building Group.

The project is expected to introduce innovative, mixed-use planning approaches to the community, contribute significantly to the transformation of Wasaga Beach's local economy and change the landscape of the beachfront commercial area for generations to come.

Now that the RFP has been awarded, a second public meeting will be organized in the fall, where FRAM will be introduced to residents, present initial design concepts and begin to engage the community in a collaborative design process.

Gathering of the Classics

We are only mid season with The Gathering of The Classics August 12 , wow what a day at the Edanvalle Areodrome. Our Classic Vehicles make a great a complement to the classic aircraft. The Edanvale Classic Aircraft Foundation had asked The Wasaga Beach Cruisers to host the car show portion of the show. It was our pleasure to help out the museum. A fantastic job done by members & volunteers. We will be back next year.

Many car shows where attended this past month by our members. Saturday July 15 at Lindsay Airport show Club member Louise Johnson's 1937 Plymouth, aka “Blue Thunder”, won Top Pick of the Day and on Sunday July16 at Lindsay Classic on Kent for top car of the day pre-1960. Nice going Louise.

The Cruisers had two senior home visits and a Mystery Tour Dinner in the space of 6 days. Very busy week.

Villa Care Centre

nd

What great feeling you get when the Club visits seniors! August 2 , the cruisers gathered at Cruisers Corner in Stonebridge and set off for Villa Care Center in Midland. The day was perfect. Hot dogs and drinks were supplied by the staff. Some seniors coming out to the parking lot actually had tears of the memories of past. This is one of the things that makes this club unique. Always a pleasure to do. Afterwards the members shuffled off to Mom's Restaurant for some amazing food and service.

Mystery Tour Dinner

rd

Norm and Brian held a Mystery Tour Dinner on August 3 . The cruise over to Ramara was a real pleasurable drive, taking about an hour or so to Rama resort for a short rest stop and the next set of directions. From there we set off up the road a couple of miles to Tail Winds restaurant. The service, the food and venue was wonderful. We left the restaurant and made it home before the skies opened up and poured more rain again.

The Grey Hair Tour

By the time you read this article The Cruiser's Grey Hair Tour will be over. It's a two day tour at Port Elgin area this year with two stops for garage tours on the way. Arriving in Port Elgin and getting settled in, dinner is out at one of the local golf courses. Special guest was be Steve Plunkett who has brought along his V12 Cadillac Phaeton. Yes, that is a bit of awesome. (Pictures next month.)

Second day cruising to some area sites and dinner in Chatsworth where Charlie “The Wolfman” has his trailer for dinner supplied by the Campground owners. What a great night. Then back to our motels with a night cruise. Friday brings us to saddle up and head home. I will be including pictures on our web page and Facebook soon.

Have a great and safe summer cruisin' on down the road. Lots more fun to come this season, so come and join the Wasaga Beach Cruisers, meet and make new friends.

Till next time, enjoy the ride while you can.

“ Keep your hands on the wheel and rubber on the road”

The project will focus on the beachfront commercial area around Beach Area 1, but the economic spin-offs will benefit the entire community.

"Ultimately, this project is about building a brighter future for our community and a stronger, more resilient Wasaga Beach for our full-time residents," said Mayor Brian Smith. "It's about more than transforming our beachfront - it's about transforming our community and tax base in the long term, which will benefit our citizens for generations to come. This Council understands that if we build a well-designed, sustainable community where our full-time residents want to live, work and play - together with our magnificent beachfront, we will also build a stronger, more vibrant and more resilient Wasaga Beach that tourists will want to experience."

The project will be guided by public input and the Town's existing, approved Downtown Development Master Plan, which outlines the following metrics that will be used to measure its positive impact on the Town:

• direct jobs created

• new visitors annually

• % increase in overnight stays

• increase in spending

• increase in provincial taxes

The Town will keep the public informed and communicate next steps, including the date of the next public meeting, through public notices on the Town's public engagement site (letstalkwasagabeach.ca) and the Town's corporate Twitter and Facebook channels.

Quotes

Mayor Brian Smith: "We're taking action to build a brighter future for Wasaga Beach. From urban revitalization projects to award-winning, waterfront communities, FRAM has consistently demonstrated a commitment to innovation, design excellence, and environmental stewardship. FRAM's projects are built on a commitment to community well-being, public engagement and collaborative design processes - and Council agrees this award-winning experience and collaborative approach is the right fit for Wasaga Beach."

Andrew McNeill, CAO, Town of Wasaga Beach: “It's about more than simply protecting our full- time residents, lessening the burden of infrastructure investments on property owners and ensuring the financial sustainability of our community. We need to build something here that is worthy of all our amazing memories of Wasaga Beach - that will stand the test of time. We need to create and leave behind something more sustainable, inclusive and vibrant - where future generations can visit or live and work and make their own memories."

Frank Giannone, President, FRAM Building Group: "FRAM is proud to have been selected as the Town's partner of choice and to be entrusted with the privilege of re-imagining and re-building Wasaga Beach's iconic beachfront. Wasaga Beach has made a transformative decision, one that will shape the future of the community and it's beachfront. This is an exciting journey that we will take together with the Town and its citizens, and we are ready to get started."

Re-purposing of the former Splash Pad delivers entertainment, movies, food and more

On a beautiful, sunny July Saturday, members of council were joined by food truck vendors, residents and visitors to celebrate the Official Opening of the Town's new Beach Area 1 Entertainment and Food Truck Zone. This represents the next phase of activation of the Town's beachfront and Beach Area 1 commercial & tourism area.

To officially open the the area, great entertainment was provided by Bar Stool Confessions who kept folks rocking for the rest of the evening.

The food truck zone is full to capacity, with 5 trucks for the 2023 summer season offering a variety of Italian and Indian food, plus French Fries, gourmet poutine, ice cream, sweet treats, snow cones and more.

The entertainment area, with a new stage, is a large space repurposing the site of the former Splash Pad. It fills up quickly with a mix of local residents and out of town visitors who enjoy the new site. The area includes colourful muskoka-chair-style seating, picnic tables and a “sandbox” where young children can play as part of the site, while parents relax, enjoy food from local restaurants and food trucks while enjoying themselves.

This new venue is home to “Movies Under the Stars” every Wednesday evening as well as “Summer Sets”, live entertainment every Friday and Saturday, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. (July and August)

The view of the beach, the bay and of course our famous sunsets, make for a spectacular backdrop to the fun family entertainment provided at this new beachfront location. Follow the ‘Explore Wasaga Beach’ on Facebook for details of movies, events and performers.

Questions Asked & Questions Answered at Ratepayers Meeting

Late June, Wasaga Beach CAO Andrew McNeill spoke to the Wasaga Beach Ratepayers Association. The purpose of the meeting was to allow the members of the organization to hear directly from the CAO on the future local issues in the Town of Wasaga Beach and ask questions. The Council Administration brought the born and raised in Wasaga Beach experienced builder of communities in Brampton and Mississauga to oversee the sustainable development in our fast-growing Town of Wasaga Beach.

The CAO's 25 years experience in creating public and private sector by his own definition will be an extreme challenge due to the decisions and the locations of the casino and arena/library. Simply put the HUB that was the 2014 administration's plan, was abandoned by the 2018 administration and has created the challenge of creating a new plan for the waterfront and Main Street by the present 2022 administration.

The privatization plan run by the Bifolchi administration was an attempt to abandon the town being a landlord as per the previous mayor. The demolition of the splash pad and buildings was another step away from leasing properties.

One ratepayer asked a poignant and imperative question. (paraphrasing) Long term plans are great but what can we do now “before I die (tongue in cheek)”. What changes can we see to make living in Wasaga the fun place being talked about in the future. The answer was on full display. Under Mayor Smith and council, the plan has changed to bringing fun, entertainment and crowds at the centre of the longest freshwater beach in the world. The July Canada Day weekend and events since, was proof there is a place for tourism in Wasaga Beach. Beach Drive was full of vehicles and people along the beach from Collingwood to Tiny, and as far as the eye could see. Between the reinvented Beach 1 Bar and the new stage of the new Beach 1 Entertainment Zone, the beach was bustling and a great start to the tourist trap this council is going for. This writer hopes that the changes will lead to a higher percentage of money staying in Wasaga Beach.

Of immediate concern and on the aggressive Key Council Priority Strategic Action for future reference, is the longstanding need for a high school In Wasaga, 800 bussed students demand. Walk-in Clinic. Affordable housing. Twin-pad / library economic opportunities that require accommodations. Open commercial development including at the beachfront. Word on the status of the beachfront development. Rental pools that open this town to tourism and longer stays for visitors.

Some concerns on the horizon for this Council and CAO are, in no particular order, affordable housing, neighbourhood standards, organized panhandlers, Air B&Bs advantage over local workers rental options, the Dardenella's return to structural stability and popularity, returning Nancy Island to prominence.

The previous Council and this Council are diametrically opposed which means the continuity of long-term goals are threatened with each change in leadership. As a voter, the big lesson here is asking candidates how they will build on the previous plans, not tear them down and start over.

The top priority for council through the CAO, is that changes will not put residents second to visitors.

Beach Drive is open, Beach 1 is rockin'! Enjoy the walks, music, and sunsets as summer's here.

Have Fun!

Editor's Note: The following is a paid submission from a local business that has been the topic of many social media posts. Many of these posts have been damaging to the reputation of the local business & the owners personally. This is a reminder of the damage that can be caused by posts on social media, perhaps maliciously, and those who see them, believing what they read. The opinions & comments stated below are not necessarily shared by Beach BOOSTER Media or staff.

Our Story, the truth behind the scenes.

As owners of Shaka Wasaga Boat Cruise, we wanted to tell the truth of what happened. You may have read some online accusations stating we had stolen boats and are operating illegally. This is untrue. We have spent the last 1 1/2 years trying to resolve the dispute through the justice system.

Here's our story. In March of 2021, we saw a business opportunity. We agreed with Mike Karpishka and Gaby Saucedo, the owners of Tiki Tours International (TTI), since re-branded into Palapa Tours, to purchase 2 fully constructed boats. We asked for a completed contract/operating agreement to work with them and their brand. It was never provided. Throughout the summer the relationship between us became strained as they blindsided us with unilateral changes to what the terms of agreement would be. The boats were delivered as pontoon pieces which we had to construct ourselves and paying double for supplies as we had paid full price for completed boats, but now had to purchase lumber and supplies to finish the boats. We asked countless times for an accounting audit after the full payment of the boats and still in March 2022, after 10 months of excuses and delay and the season just around the corner, still no contract or financial audit.

We decided to dissolve the relationship. Our lawyer informed them so. th Instead of responding via legal channels, on May 19 22, Mike and Gaby along with one resident of Wasaga Beach, created a defamation campaign

stating: - we stole the boats - operating illegally - would be arrested. They also posted our home address, where anyone could physically find us. They contacted our insurance provider, our bank, the town and our landlord, demanding to have our paperwork revoked. Alcohol suppliers were also contacted, with them stating we did not have a valid AGCO license. They contacted Transport Canada, to change the ownership of our boats, without our authorization. It was reverted after reviewing the document that was submitted by Mike was deemed insufficient. They continued for weeks to engage the public online for their defamation campaign. Their associate informed Facebook users that he was taking over the operations of our business. During the summer of 2022, they sold tickets online under the name of Wasaga Tiki Tours, and they used our business address. Unsuspecting guests who purchased tickets through the false website would show up at our location. We had to take the time from our operations to assist them in getting a refund, which was difficult and extremely unpleasant for them. We have had many people accusing us of unethical actions as a result of tickets being purchased through the false and unrelated website. Last summer was unbelievably difficult trying to operate our business professionally, while online opinions continued against us.

We've sent numerous ceases and desisted, all not adhered to, and eventually we had to serve TTI, Gaby Saucedo and Mike Karpishka for defamation. They filed a notice of an Injunction for an emergency hearing to remove our boats from the water stating we were illegal. They were unsuccessful in proving any illegal operations or conduct as stated by the Judge. Yet to this day, the post is still active and their family members continue to state on social media that we have stolen their boats.

We have tried to come to a common agreement unsuccessfully. We feel that it is time that people hear our side. It was not the route we wanted to take but felt, there were no other options to explain our side of the story.

Separate from the existing 3 poles at this special park, a new stand alone flag pole was erected to mark special occasions or occurrences.

On the beautiful grassy area of the park, that welcomes all coming into town from Veterans' Way, members of council were joined by Kenn Voss, owner of Wasaga Beach Canadian Tire and park custodian Mike Ambeau, to dedicate the new pole, and raise the brand new Town of Wasaga Beach flag showing the new town logo.

When the need for another pole, to mark special themed occasions or the loss of a first responder, Kenn Voss of our local Canadian Tire stepped up and was quick to donate the flag pole. With the donated pole erected, the inventory of appropriate flags was checked, with the new Town flag being added. In addition to the new Wasaga Beach flag, the flags dedicated for this location are the Remembrance Day Flag, All Children Matter Flag, LGTBQ Rainbow Flag, Thin Blue Line Flag (police) & Thin Red Line Flag (firefighters).

The raising of the New Town Flag also marks the launch of the town's new branding, and the marketing of cool merchandise and apparel, all boasting the new and colourful town logos and colours.

Impossible Dream?

Council of the last term approved to increase the density to 6 stories facing right across Beach 1 and 2, which I totally disagreed with. Im my opinion, a wall of 6 story condos is not what our beach needs. But I do see the need for some type of condo resort homes and year round living. I have also heard remarks saying it can never be a 4 season destination because of the weather. That too, I disagree with.

I will give you an example of making that precisely happen. Years ago I had the privilege of working with a variety of builders for Cobble Beach Golf Resort community on the shores of Georgian Bay. I learned a lot about setting up condo corporations, custom builds and the planning of a 4 season community on the shores of Georgian Bay. Again, this is just one example of thoughtful planning and perseverance . Many people thought it would fail due to the location and the harsh winter weather, but it didn't as it continues to grow today. Now a viable 4 season community that embraces tourists and residents year round offering summer, fall, and winter activities including festivals, skating, outdoor fires and snow shoe trails.

I nicknamed the resort, “the New Blue” after Blue Mountain. You can also enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner at the resort's Sweetwater restaurant year round, looking out towards the Bay, or go to the Spa for a little pampering. Even though there is NO resort planned at this time for our Beach 1, there is much to be gleaned from this concept on the shores of Georgian Bay and are certainly doable in Wasaga Beach, especially with our superior location.

If you build it right, many of the condo resort type homes can be used as vacation facilities negating the need for hotels, which then would attract more year round amenities. Restaurants, cafes, spas, winter markets, skating rink etc would follow, facing our beautiful Georgian Bay year round and be open to local residents and families to also enjoy.

We have so many trails to explore here we can package together for winter fun throughout our town and a first class golf course (Marlwood) for summer activities.

What perhaps holds us back is the mind set that it is impossible and the people that don't want change. Wasaga Beach is changing and we must embrace it. The impossible dream is NOT impossible. Just look at Cobble Beach and its founder, the late Willis McLeese for inspiration. Happy Wasaga Beach thoughts folks.

th Not So Pro Sports returned to the our Main Beach for the 26 year, bringing teams in from all over Ontario and beyond. Approximately 400 players arrived in Wasaga Beach on the Friday evening for the two day tournament, and were hosted by the Wasaga Beach Brewing Company's Beach Bar for final registration and information about the upcoming two days of fun on the sand. The evening set the tone for the tournament with live entertainment provided by local band Too Nice and the welcoming staff of the Beach Bar.

Throughout the day Saturday, all participating players enjoyed the offerings of our local businesses and then were welcomed to Bananas Beach Club for a Saturday night party. It was a fun event for everyone, with a DJ keeping all dancing and having fun.

Back on the beach early Sunday, the tournament continued. John Morrison of Not So Pro Sports told us; “These are young professionals from all over Ontario and they're just loving The Beach! They love the social aspect and are truly enjoying being back on the beach. Being back on the beach is exciting. Everybody is having a good time with that. It's definitely where we need to be, and we're th hoping that Wasaga Beach, will welcome us back for our 27 year in 2024” The planned dates for next summer are July 12, 13 & 14.

We The Beach Apparel once again a sponsored the event. Their cool products are available from their website, and other event event information can be found by following them and Not So Pro Sports on Facebook & Instagram. Beach BOOSTER Media Group is also a proud sponsor of this event and we look forward to the return of Not So Pro Volleyball Tournament next year.

Life is busy. More so now than ever before. Many of us resign ourselves to our daily routines assuming they will inevitability be waiting for us tomorrow; until something incomprehensible forces us to consider how much we take for granted each day.

Dr. Sarah Adams was taken from us far too soon in the prime of her life at 46 years old last year, after a courageous battle with ALS. This news devastated all who knew her, leaving us with an unanswerable question:

Why?

Sarah was an exception to the convention of living life with too close a reliance on the inevitability of tomorrow, and took every opportunity to try new things, creating adventures for herself and those she loved. One great passion was her love of running, which led to her establishing and operating the Beach Chiropractic and Wellness Center Running Club for over 20 years. So many under her tutelage struggled to jog just 30 seconds when they began, before

th It is this passion of hers that we celebrate on Sunday Sept. 10 at Wasaga Beach area 2, with the inaugural Sarah's Memorial Fun Run/Walk. We invite you to join us for this event for all ages and abilities which offers a 5km run/walk and a 1km kids run/walk.

Register at RaceRoster.com and search for 'Sarah's Run'.

To further recognize Dr. Sarah's love of community and compassionate nature, all funds raised from this event will be used to establish a bursary in her name for a graduating Wasaga Beach student pursuing post-secondary education, and who exemplifies her same zest for life, community spirit and genuine kindness.

Additional event information can be found on the Facebook page; ‘Dr. Sarah Adams Memorial Fun Run'. If you would like to support our efforts in the organization of this event, or have any goods or services you can donate to our raffle table, please contact us at drsarahsrun@gmail.com.

We can all take a page from the book of life that Sarah Adams lived and realize that tomorrow isn't guaranteed for any of us, and that getting up from our couches or away from our screens is just the beginning to realize what wonderful adventures life has for each of us. Life is busy. Get busy living it!

Back to School – On the Busses

Another school year is about to start and for about a thousand of our children, it will mean boarding a bus every day for a long ride to school. These travellers range in age from five to eighteen. For some of them, it will be their first experience of this kind while many are veterans of this offensive situation. We can keep blaming the Board of Trustees for this mess and they are most deserving of the criticism. We can also blame parents of children who have been silenced by false promises and for not fighting hard enough for their children. The roots of this problem are decades old and linked to political decisions made as far back as 1968.

Former Progressive Conservative Premier Bill Davis was proud of one accomplishment in particular while he was Education Minister. In 1968, he presented the Ontario Legislature with a plan to create a County system of school boards. At the time, each community had its own elected school board which controlled education in their community. Communities that were too small, purchased educational services from a neighboring town. Mr. Davis' plan was based on the belief that “bigger is better”. During the debate about this plan, we heard slogans like “economies of scale”, “lower taxes”, and “more effective use of resources.” In principle, things are supposed to materialize in that manner, but in fact, they never do. Taxes continued to rise at the same or faster rate. Administrators demand more money because they have a “bigger” job and elected politicians (trustees) need greater remuneration because they are obliged to make decisions that have greater impact. And of course, they need to do this in bigger, more beautiful surroundings which line up more accurately with the importance of the people who make those decisions. What followed these painful amalgamations was a competition between school boards as to which one could claim the most beautiful headquarters.

For those of us who opposed these grandiose plans, we did so with the earnest belief that local communities should never give up local control over something as important as our children's education. The fact that we can point to the folly that we are currently living as evidence of the rightness of our position is of little consolation. Our province went through this exercise again in 1998 when the government of P.C. Premier Mike Harris decided to create bigger District School Boards. Since then, education spending has continued to increase at a rate greater than the cost of living. Our fiscally conservative governments continue to just “ charge it up”. There is no doubt that some bean counter could come up with a number showing that we ars saving a few bucks by buying cleaning products in greater quantities. The only problem with that point is that we could have easily established purchasing partnerships without giving up local control.

Currently, trustees drive to Midhurst a few times a month to participate in meetings that generate little public interest or notice. It is at these meetings where they decide where new schools should be built. Most of them have never visited Wasaga Beach and couldn't care less about our community. But that is on them. What is on us is that we tolerate a system that discriminates so blatantly against our community and our children. One trustee asked our representatives why we thought Beach Kids were so special that they should have their own high school. The answer to that is that the Simcoe County D.S.B. has made them special by making them the only students in this province to not have a local facility to attend. Beach Kids matter and they should have a high school in their own town sooner as opposed to later!

Note: Your comments are appreciated. The column on the origins of the term “Beach Kids” elicited responses which confirmed my personal research and observations. Those were gratefully received. Every effort will be made to respond to your letters. (tochuckandrews@gmail.com)

Drivers Wanted

JGP Prowl

In August of last year, these awesome safari hats were offered to me, but I didn't know what to do with them. Recently met a new friend and asked her to help me embroider the hats with my JGP (Jason George Photography) in purple as I had this idea to start a wildlife club with 4 meetings a year, prizes (acrylic prints and other things), and even a membership card for those people that love wildlife an opportunity to th connect. I was then able to add a 5 event, as Wye Marsh donated a st “Kids Get In FREE Pass” to club members. We had our 1 virtual meeting in February, but late May, it had finally come time to meet in person. Unfortunately, the entire group (10 kids) couldn't make it, as life is busy.

Oak Wilt Spreads in Canada: Effective Strategies for Mitigation

Alert: Wasaga Beach tree canopy is in danger Oak wilt, a devastating disease, has recently been identified at three confirmed sites in Ontario –one in Springwater All species of oak are susceptible, but the red oak group is hit hardest. Red oak trees are usually killed within one year, but often more quickly – within 4-6 weeks. Individuals in the white oak group are more resistant, die more slowly, and may even recover There is no known cure.

In Simcoe County Forests red oak represent 8% of the tree inventory, while here in Wasaga Beach these mighty trees are common. Preventative measures are urgently needed.

What you can do. Implement the following preventative measures recommended by the Canadian Food InspectionAgency (CFIA).

Prevention is up to 100x more cost effective than disease management.

• Don't prune oak trees betweenApril and November, when sap beetles are active. If wounding cannot be avoided, treat wounds with latex spray paint where possible.

• Don't move firewood - it could contain oak wilt spores.

• Report suspected infections:

o By email to OakWiltReportingOntarioFletrissementduchene@inspection.gc.ca;

o At the website www.eddmaps.org; or

o By telephone to the Invasive Species Hotline (1-800-563-7711).

• Check oak trees for signs of oak wilt.

The signs of oak wilt include: dull green, brown or yellow leaves; early and sudden leaf drop; cracks in the trunk; and white, grey or black fungus.

The pathogen, Bretziella fagacearum, is a fungus of uncertain origin that invades the tree's vascular system, blocking water and nutrient flow An important pest in the USAsince 1944, it is now confirmed in 24 US states.

I had set up a special event for our group with Sydney at Birds Canada, for the group to meet a knowledgeable guide and learn about the Piping Plovers at Wasaga Beach 1. When I arrived early that morning I was rd informed that a 3 bird, a female was in the area which I knew meant we would see some potential excitement for the kids. The kids started to show up with their smiles, and awesome attitudes plus most had their hats on. I introduced Julie the guide to the group and she explain to us about the plovers, their life cycle, where they migrate to, mating rituals and so much more. We found out that one of the birds was 13 years old!! Older than everyone in the group here today, except me.

Then we went to use the scopes, one donated by Sofia H. in remembrance of the late John H., for the kids to enjoy. The plovers were moving around and then they decided to come within a few feet of the JGP Prowl. It was awesome that the 3 of them put on a show for us, so close no scope needed! Some territorial stuff even mating ritual activities entertained us for a while. Thank you, Piping Plovers! You never know with wildlife, sometimes you plan things and see nothing, other times they decide to show up. The smiles on the kids' faces as they learned and watched the plovers were awesome.

While we were there, a few locals and some very talented photographers showed up and said hello to us; Barb who I saved the loon with, Ken the Field Naturalist and Jason with his McLaren car (a really nice car with doors that go up) showed up as a surprise for those interested in cars to be able to see.

The day it ended with a group picture and a draw for prizes. It was awesome the kids came just before 10 a.m. as strangers and left later that morning, as friends.

After the meeting, a bunch of them played in the water for another 30 minutes.

Until next time, Stay safe, have fun, and enjoy the wildlife!

Disease spread naturally occurs in two main ways. Below-ground, transfer of the fungus occurs via root grafts, where the roots of (usually) like species have fused. Frequency of oak root grafts depends on various factors, including soil composition (more common in sandy soil) and forest composition (less frequent in diverse stands).Above-ground, native sap beetles are the main vector in Ontario. They carry fungal spores from an infected oak to a wound on a healthy tree. There, the fungus enters and starts the infection cycle. The sap beetles do not create the wound; nor does the fungus. Over longer distances, disease transmission is believed to be the result of human activity, especially moving firewood.

Oak wilt could be here next week or it might take decades. The best we can do is hope that our ongoing efforts will keep it away, and still prepare for its arrival. Different levels of government have an important role to play They need to inform the public about the threat of oak wilt. If there is an occurrence, it would be prudent to have a protocol already in place, especially addressing sanitation, waste handling, and spread to adjacent oaks.To monitor our oaks, we need to know where they are, meaning that we need to conduct at least an oak tree inventory And we need to start preparing now for potential damage to the tree canopy by pro-actively planting more diverse tree species.

WBCAT has been in contact with theTown and local agencies (Simcoe County Forests, NVCA, WB Provincial Park) to hear their thoughts and to learn how we can be of service. WBCAT believes that community engagement and coordination between government agencies, conservation groups, towns and townships, and concerned citizens is key to an effective response. By acting now, we can protect our forests, so they are there to protect us through climate change.

LocalOPPCruisers“Crammed”withGroceries

Huronia West OPP

Detachment held a “Cram-A-Cruiser” event at the Real Canadian Superstore in Wasaga Beach

It was not just one cruiser being loaded up, but after officers calling for another car, they had a total of three cruisers, lights flashing, attracting attention at the main entrance to the store. With Community Safety/Media Relations PC Lindsay Griffin (of “Our Town” feature in beach BOOSTER) on scene, with some enthusiastic OPP Auxiliary Officers helping, it was a fun and active collection of groceries for donation to the Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank.

Shoppers entering the store enjoyed seeing the officers and the police vehicles, and many returned with bundles and even shopping carts full of items to be “crammed” into the three awaiting cruisers.

The final numbers were approximately 1,100 lbs of groceries & over $800.00 cash donated.

Good Job Huronia West and all who participated.

CYCLING CYCLING

Honey Mustard "Chicken Maryland" Bake

In Australia the term "Chicken Maryland" simply refers to a butcher's cut for a whole leg consisting of the thigh and drumstick. Chicken breasts with the skin on, worked equally as well. This recipe is ideal for using up some of the early offerings from your garden. It is quite easy to make and can be prepared as a quick midweek meal or served as a main course at an elegant dinner party.

1 Tbsp Olive Oil

4 Chicken legs and thighs attached ( about 2 lb )

Sea salt and cracked black pepper

1/2 lb bacon

1 1/2 lb baby potatoes halved

1 cup 35% cream

1/2 cup honey mustard

1 cup water

5 sprigs of thyme, 3 sprig rosemary

8 oz green beans (optional)

Chopped parsley

Preheat oven to 400 F. Heat the oil in a large flameproof, ovenproof frying pan over high heat. Separate the legs from the thighs and sprinkle the chicken with salt and pepper and cook for 4 minutes each side or until golden. Remove from the pan and set aside.

Add the bacon and potato to the pan and cook for 6 minutes or until golden. Add the cream, mustard and water and return the chicken to the pan. Add the thyme and a few sprigs of rosemary. Bring to a simmer and cover with a lid.

Cook in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove the lid, add the green beans and cook for a further 10 minutes or until chicken is golden and potato is cooked through. Garnish with fresh parsley

Water Safety Tips Demonstrated & Explained

Members from our own Huronia West Detachment were joined with officers from Nottawasaga Detachment on the shores of the Nottawasaga River in Wasaga Beach recently for an informative demonstration and cruise on the river. Two OPP vessels, one from Wasaga Beach and the other from Collingwood, welcomed members of the media, including Beach BOOSTER. Wasaga Beach Fire Chief Craig Williams was also at the event, showing support for the OPP's safety initiatives.

All of us at Huronia West and Nottawasaga Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want to remind everyone to expect the unexpected and to always where a personal flotation device when enjoying our waterways.

We are eager to remind all boaters, and anyone heading out on the waterways, to always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) when out on the water. "A life jacket stored somewhere on a boat will not help you if you somehow fall into the water or get knocked out of your boat. Safety is paramount when it comes to recreational activities on the water and the proper wearing of a PFD at all times will enhance surviving an unfortunate

incident that may occur. Essentially, expect the unexpected and be prepared". -Sgt. Dave Moffatt, Provincial Marine Coordinator, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

In 2023, 11 lives have been lost on OPP-patrolled waterways. Over the past 13 years, 300 lives have been lost on OPP-patrolled waterways, with 256 (88%) of the incidents involving the individual not wearing a PFD. Marine officers within the OPP Central Region take water safety very seriously and stop vessels daily, to ensure that the necessary equipment is onboard. The law with regards to PFD's is simple; for every person on a boat, there must be a PFD. Failure to do so can result in a fine which starts at $200. Please review the Canada Shipping Act of 2001 for more valuable information.

If you go out onto the water, please wear a PFD at all times, as this could make a difference in your safe return to shore should you encounter a problem on the water. Enjoy your summer and be safe!

LocalWater-Skieris RepresentingCanadaatPanAmGames

Wasaga Beach resident and business owner Mark Kirby is excited to be joining the team to represent Canada at the Senior Pan American Water Ski event, to be held in Harmony, North Carolina in September.

Mark, owner of the family run Kirby's Flooring in Wasaga Beach and Apopka Florida, has been water-skiing competitively for over 30 years, competing in Regional, Provincial and National events, but has never had the opportunity to represent Canada, until now.

Senior water-skiing competitions are part of the Pan American Games, where skilled water-skiers from the Americas compete in various disciplines such as slalom, tricks, and jumping. The athletes who compete in the senior water-skiing competitions at the Pan American Games are those who have qualified through their respective national governing bodies and have met the eligibility criteria set by PASO. These athletes are generally among the top performers in water-skiing in their countries and have earned the right to represent their nations at the Pan American Games through a combination of skill, performance, and qualification procedures established by PASO and the relevant international sports federations.

In the competitive sport of water-skiing, an individual is pulled behind a boat over a body of water, skimming the surface on two skis or one ski, manoeuvring through a course of buoys, on a distanced and timed course. The skier must have adequate upper and lower body strength, muscular endurance, and good balance.

We congratulate Mark on this great opportunity and wish him all the best of luck at these international competitions. We look forward to sharing stories about his adventures when he returns in late September.

A fun, non-competitive league for mixed, 60 and over, meet at the Sports Park (Klondike Park Road) every Thursday morning at 9:00 am, from early May through to mid-September.

The league started five years ago and had 4 teams originally, but through the pandemic years, the number was reduced to just 2 teams. With the dedication of league organizers Hardy O'Connell & Bill Smith, the news of the league was shared and sponsorship was obtained.

In July an additional two teams joined the league, returning to four mixed teams, with a total of approximately 60 active players. The additional teams were made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Kristina Tardif Real Estate Group. The two new teams met for the first time at the diamond, sporting their new shirts and caps provided by the new sponsor, as Robin

British air ace Captain James Mollison and his wife, Amy Johnson, came to Wasaga Beach with their plane, Seafarer II in 1933. Their hope was to break the world's long distance flying record of 5,657.6 miles. They planned to fly to Baghdad, a distance of about 6,300 miles. Unfortunately, on the day of the planned flight there were high crosswinds, which interfered with the plane's attempts to become airborne. Damage was caused during one attempt, so the flight was called off. The Seafarer II was later purchased by James Ayling and Leonard Reid, restored, and renamed The Trail of the Caribou. On Aug. 8, 1934, a historic event happened in Wasaga Beach. James Ayling and Leonard Reid took flight in the Trail of the Caribou from the Wasaga beachfront, and landed in England, becoming the first to make the flight from Canada to England.
