Guardians of the Shore

Why Preserving The Dunes of Georgian Bay Matters

Stretching along the edge of Georgian Bay, including Wasaga Beach and Tiny, the coastal dunes are more than just scenic sand hills - they are fragile ecosystems teeming with life, natural barriers against flooding, and cultural treasures worth protecting as they account for only 2-3% of the 6000 kms of Lake Huron shoreline!

These sand dunes act as nature's shield, buffering inland areas from strong winds, rising lake levels, and storm surges. As climate change brings more intense weather events and fluctuating water levels, these natural barriers become critical to protecting nearby communities and ecosystems. As Wasaga Beach is a relic beach, meaning that the sand that is there is not being renewed, dunes are invaluable to protect our beach from erosion.

Georgian Bay's coastal dunes are home to rare and endangered plant species, like the Marram Grass which is very effective at retaining sand and stabilizing the dunes, and Pitcher's thistle, which can only survive in these unique sandy habitats. The dunes also provide nesting grounds for birds, including our endangered Piping Plovers at the Point of Beach 1, and refuge for pollinators, playing a vital role in maintaining biodiversity. Destroying or damaging these dunes - through development, off-road vehicles, or foot traffic - disrupts this delicate balance.

Moreover, dunes are dynamic landscapes that require space to move and shift. Hard structures or shoreline modifications like retaining walls, can halt this natural process, causing long-term damage. That's why preserving not just the dunes themselves, but the surrounding areas, is essential for their health.

Local communities and visitors alike benefit from the beauty and serenity the dunes offer, whether through recreation, tourism, or simple inspiration. But this enjoyment comes with responsibility

Protecting Georgian Bay's dunes means respecting signage, sticking to marked trails, and supporting conservation efforts. With the announced transfer of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park land ownership to theTown of Wasaga Beach, WBCATis pleased to see the commitment of the town to recognize the sensitive nature of our beachfront in the recent Mayor's Statement. We do suggest theTown make appropriate amendments in the Official Plan and include content in a future Destination Wasaga Master Plan, to preserve the remaining dunes and to rehabilitate others where possible.

Wasaga Beach ClimateActionTeam (WBCAT) will soon be launching a Dunes Stewardship program to help raise awareness of the dunes. The program will recognize beachfront property owners that have preserved their dunes with signs from the Lake Huron Coastal Centre. Stay tuned for our article in the next BeachBOOSTER and on WBCATwebsite.

People interested in this topic are invited to join the WBCATquarterly in-person meeting at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex, Wednesday, September 24, from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Everyone is welcome. Contact us for more information info@wasagabeachclimateaction.com

By preserving the dunes today, we safeguard the natural beauty and ecological strength of Georgian Bay and Wasaga Beach for generations to come.

Steve Says...

No Peeking

They call it 'Construction Holiday' in Quebec. We call it 'Welcome Week' at The Beach.

Wasaga Beach: where your flip-flops work harder than you do in August.

We don't need a treadmill here. Try walking on sand with a beach bag, cooler, and three kids.

Wasaga Beach: proudly welcoming Quebecers on vacation, and their coolers, too.

Forget the gym. Try finding parking at the Main Beach in August.

Here, 'rush hour' means lining up for Mr. Norm's Nephew Ice Cream, not traffic.

Wasaga Beach: where the sand gets everywhere, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

We love summer visitors! They keep us busy, and our ice cream shops even busier.

Georgian Bay called. She said the water's fine - if you can find space for your towel.

We measure summer by ice cream cones, not calendars.

The only traffic jam we like is the one at the boat launch.

Here, a perfect day is a beach chair, a breeze, and no Wi-Fi signal.

We get our steps in chasing seagulls away from our fries.

In Wasaga, sunscreen is the official scent of summer.

Quebec visitors love our sand and surf - and we love the extra poutine orders.

If you're not sweeping sand out of your car in August, did you even summer in Wasaga Beach?

Wasaga Beach: where the summer population triples, and the fun quadruples.

We don't need to 'find ourselves' - we just find the beach.

Our version of summer traffic? Beach balls rolling across the street.
