Creating a more sustainable future
At Light & Wonder, we believe success goes beyond delivering great products and services. With a global presence across six continents, we consider it our responsibility as a corporation to be an exemplary steward of the environment and contribute to a healthier future. We proactively implement sustainable practices and continuously seek ways to improve our environmental impact. By doing so, we aim to inspire positive change, foster sustainability and create a more sustainable world for our stakeholders, customers, communities and future generations. Our environmental management system focuses on landfill diversion, waste minimization, energy savings and compliance. Leading by example, we prioritize the preservation of natural resources and are working to operate in adherence to frameworks set forth in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 guidelines.
Additionally, we’ve implemented new energy management policies on a global scale to optimize our LEED-certified office spaces and promote energy-efficient building practices wherever feasible. We keep a focus on continually improving our environmental management system, and we actively introduce new systems to monitor and track our internal goals.

In recent years, Light & Wonder’s sustainability efforts have garnered global recognition, which is a testament to our ongoing efforts to drive environmental responsibility across our organization. In 2018, we were honored with the Communitas Award for Global Sustainability Initiatives, specifically for our work in Ethical Environmental Responsibility and Green Initiatives.
We also received the 2021 Sustainable Business Award at the International Gaming Awards for our global accomplishments in waste and energy reductions.
Responsible Product Design
A sustainable operation starts at the source — beginning with the materials we choose. That’s why Light & Wonder’s machines are crafted from recycled or recyclable materials. We prioritize efficiency in our machine parts by carefully evaluating their quantity and complexity, allowing us to reduce the number of manufactured items and maximize the use of standard, off-the-shelf components to maintain a more eco-friendly product line.
Our commitment to sustainability is also evident in our game displays. By transitioning to flat-panel displays, energy-efficient LEDs and an improved, upright model design, we’ve seen significant improvements. In one product example, these measures have considerably expanded the lifespan of our monitors, resulting in a remarkable 47% reduction in power consumption from our 2017 model to our 2020 models.
This substantial energy savings not only reduces Light & Wonder’s environmental impacts but also supports our customers in achieving their own sustainability goals.
Prioritizing the health of our communities, we go beyond energy efficiency to deliver products that are safe to use. We are acutely aware of the harmful environmental effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in paints, coatings, adhesives and sealants. To address this concern, we have made concerted efforts to minimize the use of VOC-containing products and transition to healthier alternatives, while upholding our commitment to maintaining the high quality and design standards that our customers expect.
We make every effort to comply with environmental impact initiatives through a variety of processes, including:
• Following internal processes to ensure we are compliant with the European Union (EU) Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive standards
• Registering with Natural Resources of Canada (NRCan)
• Working with Intertek, a product-testing agency, to evaluate our current machines’ energy efficiency
• Obtaining the necessary certification and authorization to label our current gaming machines with the Intertek’s ETL SEMKO Verified Mark — a Canadian energy-efficiency validation

Sustainability In Our Facilities
At Light & Wonder, sustainability is a key consideration in how we select and maintain our facilities worldwide. We prioritize energy efficiency by replacing older illumination systems with energy-efficient solutions such as LED lighting. Across our facilities, we implement waste sorting and recycling. To reduce paper waste, our printers are centralized and programmed to default to double-sided printing. Our facilities department has made significant strides in promoting environmental consciousness by replacing non-green cleaning products used by both our cleaning contractor and internal staff with Earth-friendly cleaning chemicals.
We encourage our Creators to participate in the following types of waste reduction practices that we conduct at each of our facilities and manufacturing sites:
• Recycling plastics, glass, paper, cardboard and aluminum cans
• Turning off lights and computers when leaving for the day
• Turning off lights when finished using a conference room
• Prioritizing teleconferencing, videoconferencing and web-based collaboration as alternatives to unnecessary travel
• Participating in recycling programs for Creators’ personal electronics, such as old mobile phones and used computers, to benefit charitable organizations, such as the America’s Schools Program and The Blind Center of Nevada
Transforming Our Operations
We maintain ongoing evaluations of areas for improvement in our production processes and transportation between our factory and customers.
Several key improvements include:
• Implementing just-in-time deliveries to minimize overall inventory levels and reduce packaging waste
• Establishing factory facilities to salvage recyclable packing materials
• Eliminating unnecessary bubble wrap, foam, paper fill, plastic wrap and strapping
• Increasing our use of reusable packaging, pallets and dividers to minimize single-use waste
• Introducing improved racking and carts for efficient line-side delivery of doors, hoppers, decks and top boxes
• Redesigning pallet and box sizes to maximize container capacity, reducing the number of shipments required
• Opting for maritime transportation for global delivery of goods, promoting fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions
RETHINKING PRODUCT END-OF-LIFE
At Light & Wonder, our commitment to responsible product management spans the entire lifecycle — from sourcing to end-of-life. In alignment with the Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, we repurpose or recycle our products to avoid landfill disposal and minimize their environmental impact. When a product reaches the end of its life, it is returned to Light & Wonder, where it undergoes dismantling by a certified recycling entity. Supporting a circular economy approach, this process focuses on the reuse of components, ensuring that valuable resources are given a new life.
Thinking even bigger, Light & Wonder’s headquarters and main manufacturing facility is strategically located near alternative energy sources, which enables us to further reduce our carbon emissions. We have the advantage of accessing the nearby Hoover Dam’s hydroelectric power as well as Nevada’s Solar One, one of the largest concentrated solar power plants in the world. By leveraging these renewable energy sources, we will be able to sustain a cleaner, more environmentally friendly operation.
