Tips for reducing your environmental footprint

Did you know that one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or incinerated every second, adding up to 92 million tons of clothing in landfills each year?

HOW TO SHOP MORE SUSTAINABLY:

• Sell or donate your unwanted clothes.

• Shop secondhand to cut down on waste and find one-of-a-kind items.

• Invest in basics from high quality brands to help clothes last longer.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Everyone has heard of the saying, but did you know that there is 8.3 billion tons of plastic in the world – some 6.3 billion tons of that is trash. In the ocean, there are around 8 million metric tons of plastic added each year - that amounts to five grocery bags filled with plastic for every 1 foot of coastline on earth.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

• Reduce the amount of plastics in your everyday life and choose fabric reusable bags and reusable bottles.

• Reuse items that you normally only use once, like reusing a disposable cup as a new plant pot.

• Recycle all types of materials in your bin recycling at home but make sure to empty, clean, and dry them too!

MAKE ECO FRIENDLY SWAPS

Did you know that bars of soap last 6x longer than liquid soap or that sponges harbor 45 billion bacteria per square centimeter, that’s as much bacteria as the inside of a toilet.

WHAT SWAPS TO MAKE:

• Swap out liquid soaps, shampoos, and conditioners which are more than 60% water and in plastic containers, for solid bars that are zero waste and last longer.

• Switch regular kitchen sponges that only last 2 weeks, for a bamboo scrubber that lasts months and is naturally antimicrobial.

• Ditch the unrecyclable plastic food wrap which takes 100 years to decompose for reusable beeswax food wraps, that last a whole year.

ASM Global Stars Scholarship Program

For our second year, ASM Global has launched the external ASM Global Stars Scholarship Program – reflecting our commitment to providing diverse and under-resourced communities with educational and career development opportunities through scholarship awards and prospective career experiences.

Funded by the ASM Global Acts Foundation, $125,000 in scholarship awards will be available to students in 39 cities across the United States this year, up from $70,000 from the program’s inaugural 2022 launch.

The path to pursuing an education and career looks different for everyone, and there are inevitable obstacles along the way. Yet some have greater barriers than others, and our goal is to help level the playing field for anyone looking to advance their education.

Our goal is to expand the ASM Global Stars Scholarship program globally to further solidify our intention to make a difference in the communities where we do business.

SOLDIER FIELD

For Mother’s Day, both ASM Global and Chicago Fire team members collaborated and conducted a service act for Well of Mercy - a nonprofit organization that provides help to homeless pregnant women and current mothers to heal, find stability, and help build a better path forward. In addition to hosting 30 women and children at the Chicago Fire match, ASM Global presented each mother with flowers and provided food for the group to enjoy. Thanks for making the day special, Soldier Field!

WORLD BAHRAIN

Stemming from its solid commitment to corporate social responsibility and one of its main pillars of supporting and giving back to the community, Exhibition World Bahrain, on the occasion of World Autism Awareness month, collaborated with the Bahrain Society for Children with Behavioural and Communication Difficulties “Alia Centre for Early Intervention”, by hosting a “Run for Autism” public event that took place on April 29, 2023 and attended by more than 300 visitors. This fruitful partnership was initiated after Exhibition World Bahrain’s team visited Alia Centre earlier this year to discuss potential opportunities for collaboration.

UK VENUES

ASM Global has pledged its support to Music Venue Trust, a charity that represents and protects almost 1,000 grassroots music venues (GMVs). ASM will bolster its support for MVT with donations, training and marketing support, with programmes that will roll out on a local level across ASM Global’s portfolio of UK venues. ASM Global will actively seek opportunities to support MVT as part of its ongoing planning, including a match for Enter Shikari’s £1 per ticket sold donation to the MVT when they play in February 2024 at OVO Wembly Arena. ASM Global will also offer training and shadowing support, offering those from the grassroots industry the chance to get insight into ASM Global’s key areas of operations to support the running of GMVs moving forward. ASM will also offer marketing and social media support, as well as signage in venues, to make these venues as visible as possible in their local markets.

INVESTING IN PEOPLE AT RAISING CANE’S RIVER CENTER

After serving as a Sales and Marketing Intern for a year, Taylor Vu has been hired as the Sales and Marketing Coordinator at the Raising Cane’s River Center in Baton Rouge. Vu is a recent graduate from Louisiana State University and over her year as an intern, she exceeded all expectations by always coming in with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. Providing pathways into our industry for underrepresented student groups is a priority, and we’re excited to watch Taylor G.R.O.W with ASM Global!

ICC SYDNEY

Did you know that 90% of the price for a bottle of water is the cost of the plastic bottle and only 36% of plastic drink bottles are recycled in Australia? Over the last 6 years, ICC Sydney team and guests have saved over 2 million plastic bottles, simply by providing fresh and clean Sydney tap water in reusable glass bottles and refill stations throughout the venue, including in all meeting rooms. This initiative has significantly decreased bottled water consumption on site while providing great tasting water to delegates and visitors.

THE GREEK THEATRE

As part of the Green Zone Project, a collaborative effort between The Greek and the city of Los Angeles to lessen environmental impact, The Greek has welcomed some shiny new equipment to the facility. In addition to the existing composter, which allows community members to access compost materials for their personal use, The Greek has recently installed a new cardboard baler and a waste baler/ compactor. Did you know: One fully filled waste compactor is equivalent to six 40 yard open top dumpsters?!

EARTH MONTH

The staff at Leon’s Centre participated in the April spring community Pitch-In clean-up in support of Earth Month Awareness. They volunteered their time to help clean up around the Centre located in Kingston’s Downtown core and make it a more beautiful and inviting place. Their efforts helped to create a cleaner and more enjoyable environment for everyone in the surrounding area of our venue. The Leon’s Centre staff’s commitment to improving their community is commendable and sets a positive example for others to follow.

LUNCH ‘N LEARN

Our venues are using the Academy in new and interesting ways to engage team members and increase learning opportunities. We encourage you to take a page from their book.

CITYPARK has embraced the Academy and is hosting monthly Lunch ‘n Learns with Academy content. Donna Griffin, the Accounting Manager and PJ Fuller, the Office Manager collaborated together to create this monthly professional development session.

A Q+A with Donna + PJ

How do you choose a course?

Our courses are chosen by topics beneficial to growing our young and eager team. Last month, our topic was Diversity and Inclusion. We tied into Pride month and Juneteenth.  As a team, we completed the following lessons:  How to be an Ally, Understanding Unconscious Bias and Bystander Strategies.

How do you facilitate the Lunch ‘n’ Learn?

Within the first week of each month, we choose a topic from the Academy.  Sometimes

we have the Lunch ‘n Learns as a potluck and everyone brings an item of their choosing. . During the Lunch ‘n Learn we gather in the conference room while eating our lunches, enjoy and learn from the videos. To keep everyone involved, we ask a couple of questions during or at the end of each video, regarding what was talked about in the videos and how it may relate to our Team. And yes, there are small prizes involved!

ACADEMY SPOTLIGHT ON CITYPARK

A Q+A with Donna + PJ (CONT)

How many team members typically attend?

Here at CITYPARK we have a smaller team of 12 Team Members.  Attendance is taken at each Lunch ‘n Learn and any Team Member not in attendance will be assigned the trainings within their ASM Academy account to complete at a later date.

How has the program been received?

The program is being received well! We always ask for input on topics Team Members would like to see and if there is anything we can do that would better the Lunch ‘n Learn. I am excited to see this program grow!

Please share how your team utilizes the Academy at voices@asmglobal.com.

YOUR CAREER, YOUR WAY.

SUCCESSION PLANNING

Do you want to grow your career? Openings happen every day. We have talented team members working hard daily in our venues already. Our goal is ensuring we have a plan in place that offers qualified team members within ASM Global the chance to fill and apply for key leadership roles. In the coming weeks, we will begin conversations with our GM team to learn more about the leadership in your venues.

As you begin to think about what’s next in your career journey, a few things to consider:

• What career path do you want to follow?

• Are you willing and able to relocate?

• What are your/their respective development needs?

• What type of impact do you want to make within our organization?

• What are you passionate about?

While these matters are something we talk about frequently as leadership, this is a first step in formalizing and documenting these important conversations and feedback.

ASM Global recognizes that our most valuable asset is our team members, who deliver above expectations every day for our customers, clients, partners, and stakeholders. We are committed to ensuring our team members have the opportunity to grow and prosper within our organization.

UK- Personal Development Reviews

Here in the UK, we recently launched our performance development review (PDR) process. Whilst we’ve been a little behind the curve compared with our global colleagues, the desire to have a formal performance development process has been voiced by both management and our team members alike.

In today’s climate, team members are looking for more from the employment relationship. They want to know what’s in it for them! Our PDR process enables an open, transparent, and frank conversation around performance, training and development which is then going to support us in the next stage of our journey, succession planning and talent management. For managers, it allows them to get closer to their teams and understand more about what

they are looking for from their careers as individuals. It enables them to offer stretch targets to enable development whilst also providing opportunities to address any performance concerns.

In addition to the above, the PDR process enables the Company to provide consistency in communication when it comes to the UK’s 3-year plan, ensuring that an individual’s objectives are focused on contributing to the overall business plan.

Regardless of what role you perform, you want to know how you are going to add value. What part can you play in helping the Company to achieve its goals and ambitions. This initiative allows us to capture this and drive team member engagement as a result.

University Learning at ASM Global

As we continue to expand our GROW program globally, we are seeing new career experiences being accepted daily by university students. This really is an exciting time! Through this global initiative, we will continue to provide industry knowledge and potential career opportunities to those students that excel in our program.

Our Global University Student Learning Program is LIVE!

2023 is the year that we are activating on the opportunity to provide introductory pathways into ASM Global for ethnically diverse university students. All venues are encouraged to open opportunities to university students. We aim to provide meaningful experiences to these students that upon graduation will lead to a full-time job offer within ASM Global.

ASM Global (APAC) on Track to 100 Mental Health First Aiders

We all want our people to be their best selves at work, and it is when they feel safe that they bring their full selves. Inclusive workplaces are workplaces that support this notion, but sometimes, being our full selves at work can be stressful because it might require us to be vulnerable. This stress can be created by psychosocial hazards and these hazards can cause psychological or physical harm. Stress itself is not an injury, but if team members are stressed often, over a long time, or the level of stress is high, it can cause harm. Psychological harm may include anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder or sleep disorders. Physical harm may include musculoskeletal injuries, chronic disease or fatigue related injuries. The team across APAC have turned their attention to the proactive duty on our venue teams to proactively address psychosocial hazards in the workplace.

One strategy that has been stood up is the training of Mental Health First Aiders in venues and the APAC Head Office to support our mentally healthy workplaces. ASM Global recognises our responsibility to manage workplace hazards through appropriate hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation. Additionally, we seek to meet operational requirements in an efficient and safe manner. The opportunity to work with our venue and Head Office teams to implement initiatives that support mentally healthy workplaces is SUPER exciting and we have partnered with Julie Gillespie to support our work in this space. We are aiming to have 100 Mental Health First Aiders across the region and have almost 50 already accredited. This is an important part of workplace safety and culture and we are thrilled with the interest from across the region to participate.

SWEDEN

One way to make a significant impact is by going above and beyond, or perhaps by doing something truly meaningful. Take, for instance, assisting young individuals in transitioning into the workforce, aiding their growth, and ensuring they forever cherish the first helping hand they receive. It can start at a trainee period or with work in a kiosk in an arena and can lead to becoming a leader, and much more. In essence, it’s a trainee program designed for young professionals .

Congratulations on your promotion to Venue Manager! Can you describe your journey during the trainee program? What were some of the most valuable lessons or experiences you gained along the way?

Thank you! I knew from the start of my studies in event management that the role as Venue Manager at Stockholm Live interested me. When it was time for me to start my trainee program I of course wanted to be here, to see if the role was anything like I imagined or not. My trainee program stretched for five months. It sounds like a long time but for me it was crucial since it gave me the opportunity to be a part of the events from start to finish. Venue Manager is a big role, and it takes time to learn. During my time as a trainee, I experienced many events in different stadiums. From my trainee experience, I learned that practical

experience is essential for learning. Reading and discussing events in school only took me so far; it was only through applying my knowledge that I achieved the level of understanding I aimed for.

How has the trainee program prepared you for the challenges and responsibilities of being a Venue Manager?

As a Venue Manager, there is a wide range of responsibilities to handle, which requires a significant amount of learning before assuming a leadership role in projects. Participating in a trainee program provided me with a solid foundation, allowing me to shadow experienced Venue Managers over an extended period. I observed their thinking process, decision-making, and actions in different situations. This opportunity is often limited when starting a new role, as there is an expectation to deliver quickly. Consequently, I felt more confident when I eventually took on my own projects. Additionally, I appreciate having the chance to witness diverse events, including sports, concerts, and B2B activities. This exposure provided a broader perspective of our company’s operations and equipped me with valuable knowledge for my future work.

Can you share any memorable experiences or achievements from your

ASMs Stockholm Live attracts young talent with their GROW Program!

time in the trainee program that you are particularly proud of?

I had incredible experiences participating in various events. One of the standout moments was being assigned to my first project, which was a B2B event hosting 500 EU participants. It was a truly immersive experience and gave me a taste of what it’s like to organize an event. Additionally, I had the privilege of working on the 2023 World Men’s Handball Championship at Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, which was an entirely different and remarkable experience. Being involved in such a significant event during my trainee period made me feel incredibly fortunate.

As a Venue Manager, what are your primary responsibilities and what does a typical day look like for you?

The Venue Manager role is thrilling and packed with responsibilities. We take charge of almost everything related to the stadium for each project. From constructing stages to ensuring a spotless venue and arranging welcoming event hostesses, we oversee it all. Acting as the main contact for organizers, we maintain close communication before, during, and after events. Safety is paramount, and we

collaborate closely with our dedicated safety department at Stockholm Live to guarantee a secure and event-ready stadium. Each day is an adventure, and I embrace the opportunity to learn something new every single day!

What are some of the biggest challenges you foresee in your new role, and how do you plan to overcome them?

During my startup period I felt the biggest challenges were to learn enough to act on upcoming problems myself. Sometimes you face challenges that you have no knowledge in. To find a solution in those situations are not always easy. I consider the ability to remain calm a key component to succeed in situations like this. Communication is my way to deal with a lot of situations where I don’t feel confident in my knowledge. What I don’t know somebody else surely does!

What advice do you have for other young professionals who aspire to excel in the event management industry and progress in their careers?

The event business is very big and there are several different roles to choose from once you decide to start your event

LOVISA AXTELIUS WAS PROMOTED TO VENUE MANAGER AFTER HER TRAINEE PROGRAM. SHE IS NOW MANAGING BIG EVENTS AT THE STADIUMS IN STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.

journey. Think about what you would prefer and find a path that suits you. Be curious, that´s the most fun way to learn.

How do you envision the future of event management and what trends do you believe will shape the industry in the coming years?

The event industry is rapidly evolving, and significant changes have occurred in recent years. I anticipate that in the coming years, we will prioritize concepts like wellbeing, diversity, and sustainability. Throughout my trainee period, these terms were frequently emphasized across various event types, whether it was sports, concerts, or conferences. Furthermore, with advancing technology, we can expect a rise in the use of immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). These advancements undoubtedly impact the way we organize events.

“Recruitment never sleeps”, it is an ongoing process at Stockholm Live, as we constantly seek driven and motivated young talents who are eager to learn and contribute to the entertainment and hospitality industry,” emphasizes Per Noreen, Director of HR & Sustainability. We have cultivated strong partnerships with select polytechnic schools that offer event management programs. By hosting students for their comprehensive five-month trainee periods, such as Lovisa’s experience, we are able to extend direct job offers upon their completion of exams. Our future objective is to further develop our GROW program, aimed at casual staff, to promote career opportunities in catering and related fields.
