Local mum from Crowle who started fitness drive to get ‘wedding ready’ now planning to climb Everest for charity
A mum of two who embarked on a new fitness regime to get in shape for her son’s wedding has now set herself another challenge – to climb Mount Everest.
Jacquie Cotterill, 60, from Crowle, North Lincolnshire, started on her fitness journey earlier this year to make sure she looks her best for when her youngest son Jed ties the knot later this year.
But when her friend Tracy Hampson, Operations Director for the learning disability charity Hft, told her she had signed up to take on the world’s biggest peak, Mount Everest, Jacquie jumped at the chance to join her.
Jacquie and Tracy will be joined on the trek by Hft Head of Care and Support for the East region, Ian Earey. Together they have set themselves the challenge of raising £15,000 for the charity which supports learning disabled adults across the UK.
“I’ve never done anything like it before,” said Jacquie. “I had already begun my fitness journey, but when Tracy told me she’s signed up I said I would join her.
“It’s a great opportunity to experience a challenge of a lifetime as well as raising money for a charity which does such valuable work to support learning disabled people.”
Over the past few months Jacquie has been ramping up her exercise regime, cycling, enjoying weighted hula and taking part in personal trainer sessions twice a week.
“I sprang into action when Jed said he was getting married this year – I didn’t want to be wobbling in my outfit,” laughed Jacquie.
Jacquie, a patient safety specialist, and Tracy first met when they worked together in 1998 and have been firm friends ever since.
Jacquie has also been busy training to climb the 5,364 metres up to Mount Everest’s base camp by going on long hikes.
“I’ve bought myself a tent and booked a camp and hike to get me used to what is coming,” she said.
“And I am planning to take on the Three Peaks too.”
Jacquie will sometimes be accompanied on her training by her dogs, 13-year-old Polly the pug and Mavis – a cross between a Great Dane and a Mastiff.
“I have no real concept of what the trek up Everest will be like,” said Jacquie.
“But I’ve got one of my best friends doing it with me.
“It’s going to be a real adventure and I will be glad when we’ve made it to the top.”
Jacquie will be celebrating her 61st birthday while on the challenge.
“I’m sure we will be having a glass of something to celebrate my birthday and completing the challenge,” she said.
“At the same time as nursing blisters and our aching bones.”
The challenge – led by experienced guides - will see the trio start their epic journey in Kathmandu.
Their trip will see them traverse spectacular gorges, hike across suspension bridges and past majestic peaks.
Hft Community Fundraising Manager Emma Macdonald said: “We’re delighted that Ian, Tracy and Jacquie will be walking in the shadow of the world's highest mountain as they trek to the iconic Everest Base Camp.
“We can't thank them enough for all their efforts which will make a huge difference to the lives of learning disabled adults.”
Anyone who wants to support Jacquie’s challenge can donate at www.justgiving.com/page/teamhfteverestbasecampchallenge.
Crowle show Sunday July 20th 2025
Preparation is underway for this year’s Crowle agricultural show which will take place on Sunday July 20th on Godnow Road at the fields kindly provided by the Brears family.
The Main ring attractions will include Stannage International stunt show, Langton sheepdog display, ferret racing, Streetbeat dance routine, as well as the crowning of the Lord and Lady with the Championship winners from the horse and cattle classes closing the show with a parade.
The committee members are excited to announce the return of Shire and heavy horse classes to our 2025 show. They will be in addition to the ridden and in hand horse and pony classes
We have a wide selection of trade stands, side shows, vintage vehicles and tractors booked in so we are hoping that the show will have something for everyone. There will be sheep and cattle classes and a visit from Ian's mobile farm which will have lots of animals to keep the children entertained. We are looking forward to seeing all of the homegrown and homemade items in the produce tent , will you be entering this time? Schedules are available locally and on the website. We have live music, including a brass band, local singers and a licensed bar.
You are encouraged to bring your dogs and enter the Fun dog show classes. We promote responsible pet ownership so please bring a supply of pooh bags and a drinking bowl for your dog too.
Schedules for most of the various sections are already on our website, with the others available shortly.
If you are a business proprietor you may want to advertise in the programme or perhaps you could sponsor part of the show, whether it’s a few rosettes or a whole marquee it’s a great way to contribute to your local area.
We are providing free tickets to all primary school children in the Isle of Axholme this year and to have some free activities for them to enjoy with their families.
Crowle show is a community event which is run by a team of volunteers, we always appreciate additional helpers for setting up and taking down the show as well as on show day. If you can give us a few hours or to find out more about the jobs that need doing, or anything else, please get in touch via our website www.crowleshow.org.uk or find us on Facebook.
SAINT NORBERT’S CATHOLIC VOLUNTARY ACADEMY
Mission Statement: To live, love and learn in the footprints of Jesus.
Welcome to our May Newsletter!
Our Newsletter is slightly different this time as we would like to use this opportunity to say a big and heartfelt ‘thank you’ to our Parent Teacher Association – the Friends of St Norbert’s. Our PTA consists of parents, grandparents, friends and school staff who work tirelessly to support our school community, not only raising funds but also volunteering at school events such as our Christmas Performances, Harvest Celebration and Parent Workshops, to name just a few.
This support has been invaluable and has enabled us to subsidise school visits, reducing financial burden on parents wherever possible. Fun visits to Boston Park Farm and Go Ape have taken place, as well as educational visits to ensure that older children are wellequipped with skills to keep themselves safe in the future, for example. The PTA have facilitated art and craft visits such as recent ‘Fibonacci’ and ‘Wow said the Owl’ workshops at the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, alongside various treats at the Christmas Pantomime and parties, bouncy castles for the summer treat day, dance workshops for our World Book Day celebrations and various other equally important resources and events. We are so very grateful to them for all their hard work and support which adds such variety to the journey which children take whilst with us.
We would also like to say another big ‘thank you’ to our local Lincolnshire Co-op who, with the help of the Crowle community and the Lincolnshire Co-op Community Champions Scheme, have helped us to raise a wonderful £1,013 towards our goal of creating a sensory room.
Our aim for this year is not only to replace our playground markings but also to create a sensory room which will be of benefit to so many children. This will have soothing light sources, comfy seating and interactive resources; it will be used for children with a range of needs, for small group work or for 1:1 support.
Our next fundraiser – the biggest of our year – is our Summer Fayre, which takes place on Saturday 14th June; please do take a look at the poster for further information. Proceeds from this day will also be used to support fundraising for our sensory room so it would be great to welcome you. Our café will be open, serving light lunches, teas, coffees and cakes from 11.30am. We will have a ‘Grand Draw’ and tickets will be on sale from around the end of May (available to purchase via families of the school, our PTA or from the school office). If you are able to buy or sell any tickets for us, we would – of course – be very grateful.
The theme of this year’s fayre is ‘Movies through the Decades’. You can expect to see staff, members of our PTA, families and children dressed up as characters from their favourite films. Our café will be movie-themed too! There will be water games, bouncy castles, hoopla, football games, treasure island and lots of other fun for children of all ages.
We really do appreciate the community around us and all of the support that our families, the local community, our church community, the PTA, friends and neighbours give us. If you feel you might be able to help us in any way towards our sensory room goal, we would be very happy to talk with you.
Once again, thank you and if you would like to keep up with what’s happening in our school, or if you need any information, this can be found on our website www.stnorbertscrowle.co.uk. Please do take a look.
Please note that you do not need to be a Catholic to attend our Nursery or school; we are a Catholic school for all – not just a school for Catholics. Families of all faiths or no faith are welcome and places are available in our Nursery throughout the year.
