As the days grow longer and the sunshine starts to make a more regular appearance, it’s wonderful to see our local community buzzing with activity and good spirits. This month, we celebrate the simple joy of sharing time with one another.
Our villages are full of people who care for each other, and this shines through in our local coffee clubs and social gatherings which bring smiles, laughter, and friendships old and new. It’s these little gatherings that remind us how important it is to stay connected and look out for those around us.
In May, we’ll have the honour of marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day with commemorative events planned in Sprotbrough at the Goldsmith Centre. It’s a poignant moment to remember those who sacrificed so much, while also celebrating the enduring spirit of our community .
Here’s to a month of kindness, connection, and things to look forward to!

Sprotbrough MU Branch recently held what seems to have become an annual event in the village; their Cream Tea to raise funds for AFIA.
This year was a sellout and the Church Hall was full. Over seventy cream teas were provided. There were stalls selling cakes, cards / gifts, plants, books and mystery gifts, alongside the ever-popular raffle, all of which helped to swell funds. Needless to say, the main focus was on the cream teas with homemade scones provided by members!
Thanks to the hard work of members and good support from the community, a record breaking £840.00 was raised for AFIA this year. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all and certainly well worthwhile! https://www.mothersunion.org/projects/afia

A SENIOR South Yorkshire doctor has given a big ‘thumbs-up’ to the hardworking efforts of a dedicated band of local volunteers, who freely give up their spare time to improve a Doncaster beauty spot.
Dr David Crichton, who combines being NHS South Yorkshire’s Chief Medical Officer with his role as a Bentley-based GP, called in at Sprotbrough to see the Don Gorge Community Group (DGCG) in action. The volunteers have been using small amounts of grant funding to create new seating areas for visitors, alongside the conservation and maintenance work they routinely carry out.
A keen walker and outdoors lover, Dr Crichton said: “It was a real pleasure to visit the Group and see the excellent work taking place. Being outdoors and exercising are great ways to help look after your physical and mental wellbeing. I would encourage local people to visit the many green spaces we have across South Yorkshire and enjoy this natural beauty on our doorstep.”
Dr Crichton was joined by representatives of local organisations that have supported the DGCG’s activities, including Sprotbrough & Cusworth and Warmsworth parish councils. They saw new benches the volunteers have installed alongside the River Don, through the Don Catchment Rivers Trust’s (DCRT) All Hands on the Don Community Grant Scheme, financed by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Alex Liversidge, from DCRT, said: “The Don Gorge Community Group’s application really appealed to us, as they are a fantastic local organisation that undertake tremendous work which is led by and on behalf of the local community. Their proposal to install benches, which really allow you to take in the beauty of our fantastic river and give tired legs a rest, aligns with our aim of making our rivers more accessible and interesting places to visit.”
The party then went to two benches that have been sited on Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT) land, off Nursery Lane, Sprotbrough, paid for by City of Doncaster Council’s Well Doncaster Community Wealth Builder fund. On the way, they stopped by a formerly dried-up pond the volunteers are bringing back to life, with guidance from YW staff.
And the fact-finding tour was rounded off with a short walk to the Warmsworth bank of the River Don to see an old mill wall restored with funds donated by Tesco, and a stone wall and bench built with a grant from the Co-op, which Dr Crichton formally declared ‘open.’
DGCC Chair, Ian Carpenter, said: “The purpose of the tour was to show Dr Crichton what we have been doing as a Group and to thank the organisations that have funded the projects we have completed so far.”
We have had such an exciting half term with visits taking place in and out of school. Year 1 travelled to White Post Farm, Year 4 went to Austerfield Study Centre, Year 2 & Year 5 invited The History Van and Historical Interpretations into school. Year 6 visited Crucial Crew and Year 3 welcomed The Twisted Knot into Richmond Hill.
We welcomed all parents into school for Easter assemblies. Celebrating learning, showcasing what instruments we have been learning to play, singing and performing. We loved all the efforts that went into Easter bonnets and our decorated eggs, as always, reminding us what amazing imaginations our children have.

The 60’s night on Sat. 5th April was a real success and very well supported by the community. Raising £650 was the best ever for one of Ray Sullivan’s fund raisers for Sprotbrough Christmas lights. The funds will go towards the cost of putting on this year’s event on November 29th
A very big thank you to Ray for putting on these events; they are greatly appreciated and enjoyed!
Look out for the next event; could be August!
