Epworth joined in the nationwide commemorations of the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a beacon lighting ceremony. Across Doncaster, beacons were lit in various towns and villages, including Epworth, to mark the occasion. The Mansion House in Doncaster was also illuminated in red, white, and blue as part of the tribute.

Kevin is a very popular local archaeologist and he is going to give a talk about things that have happened to him over the years in Lincolnshire archaeology. This promises to be an entertaining evening with a few funny stories along the way.

At our meeting in May a representative from Hope House, Scunthorpe accepted a cheque for £500 from Epworth & District WI. The funds were raised at our Fashion Show which was held in March. Hope House is a much valued support centre for all cancer sufferers and their families offering vital help to the whole family including children. This support includes counselling, relaxation, beauty treatments or just a chat with people who understand. They also deliver a cooked meal every week to the families registered with them, not just for the person undergoing treatment but for the whole family. This is all run by volunteers and the centre depend on charitable donations.
Members of High Levels WI met for their April meeting at The Reindeer Inn, Sandtoft on their usual meeting night of the third Wednesday of the month. After the usual business and a rendition of Jerusalem, a representative of the Lincolnshire Rural Support Network was welcomed.
Peter Cornish, a volunteer case worker with the organisation had been asked at the last minute, to stand in and give a talk. He listed a number of statistics relating to the farming and horticultural community and these gave an insight into the work of the organisation. He highlighted farming issues of health and well-being, weather, animal diseases, retail power, rural crime and the long hours involved in the industry. These and other factors often lead to stress, mental and physical health issues.
The organisation is volunteer-led and provides help and support for families and individuals struggling in any way and a confidential helpline is open every day of the year.
An interested audience was soon involved asking many questions related to the work of the organisation and the role of the volunteers.
As usual there was a raffle and an opportunity over refreshments for some friendly conversation and further discussion on the topic.
On June 18th High Levels will host Elizabeth Hallet when she talks on Life as a District Nurse and on July,16th members will learn about Dementia Friends. Both meetings will begin at 6.45pm. Crowle Entertainers’ summer
production this year is a modern take on Shakespeare’s classic love story –Romeo and Juliet.
Performances will take place at Crowle Community Hall on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th June at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £5, are on sale at Crowle Regen shop, by calling 07966 315733 and are also available online at https://timeforashow.com/crowle-entertainers or on the door.
Romance and violence both take their part in this tale, set on a council estate where knife crime and gang warfare play out against a backdrop of poverty and food banks. The story follows the fortunes of the two star-crossed lovers, who find love and ultimately, tragedy, amidst the ongoing family feuds between the Capulets and the Montagues on the estate. Selfmade man Capulet wants to rule the roost and improve his social prospects by marrying off his daughter Juliet to the well-connected Paris, but once Juliet meets Romeo, (a Montague) she has other ideas.
Edited and directed by Gill Vickers, with a current and edgy soundscape and a vibrant urban setting, this is Shakespeare as you’ve never seen it before. Whether you’re a Shakespeare fan or are new to the works of the Bard, this is a production which you can’t afford to miss!
After another great day last year, live music is back in town for this year’s Epworth Music Day on Saturday 21st June!
With less than 1 month to go before this year’s Music Day, we’re putting the final pieces together for another great day of celebrating live music. In the daytime there’ll be over 90 hours of free music from 10am to 5pm in 13 venues around Epworth, featuring over 60 different groups and performers of all types of music. All this is free; no tickets are needed.
We will again be closing the roads to traffic in the centre of Epworth from 9.30am to 5pm on 21st June.
As well as the daytime programme, The Queen’s Head, The White Bear, and The Old School Inn will be putting on their own music in the evening, and this will round off a fabulous day’s music and entertainment.
At 7pm there will also be a concert with 5 different groups – again of all types of music –performing in St Andrew’s Church – and the Folk Dance group of the Yorkshire Camping and Caravanning Club will be putting on a ceilidh in the Imperial Hall, starting at 7.30pm.
Again, all the evening music and the ceilidh are free; no tickets are needed.
Full details of the performers and the daytime and evening programmes will be available at www.epworthmusicday.com and will be available on the day. You can also follow us on our Facebook page.
We would still welcome a few more stewards to help on the day – for however much time you can give. If you think you could help, please contact John Lambert on jrlambert@doctors.org.uk

The historic town of Epworth will host another Open Gardens event this year, thanks to the many owners/guardians who are opening the gates to their glorious grounds in 2025, and our sponsors Holmes and Gardens, garden centre.
There are several new venues for this year and some that opened in 2024, around 12 in total. Large and smaller gardens will be available to view. One has sections of beautiful flowing streams and ponds with scenic views towards the countryside; another with mediterranean vistas and stunning acers and cordylines. Others have innovative ideas for compact spaces and the creation of living roofs. Manicured topiary hedges and edges are featured whilst large cottage style perennial borders with a fairy garden can also be seen. The Old Rectory’s reopened primitive physick garden will welcome our guests and the celebrated St Andrew’s church will be filled with delightful displays of garden flowers. Just a few miles out of Epworth, Field Good Flowers will be open for our visitors too.
Whilst some gardens are for viewing only, others have additional fundraising activities such as homemade cakes and refreshments, plant stalls including one with an aeonium display/sales, live entertainment by the renowned Sue Hollingsworth, quizzes, a raffle and more. ‘James Bond’ might even make another appearance!
Fundraising for Lindsey Lodge hospice and St Andrew’s church, we would really appreciate your support at this year’s event as we aim to raise as much as possible. 2024 saw the phenomenal sum of £3600 raised which, according to a representative from Lindsey Lodge hospice, was the most any open gardens event had raised on the Isle to date. We sincerely hope to see you over the course of the weekend, thoroughly enjoying yourselves amongst the wonderful array of gardens.

We are a small, friendly and active club, founded in the 1930's. Our playing season is from 1st May to 30th August approximately. Our activities vary from league matches, internal competitions and friendly matches. We enjoy some very good fun days with our members, which are held on a monthly basis. Also, we meet up socially at the clubhouse every month during the winter for fun-filled afternoons. Bowling is not just for the elderly and we would like to welcome and encourage new members to join us, male and female, all age groups (children from age 12 yrs). Our weekly roll-ups, which are on a Sunday afternoon at 1pm, are well supported. People walking by will often stop to watch and have a chat, then end up joining our club.
This is a good opportunity to learn a new sport, make new friends, to exercise according to your own ability, all at a very reasonable cost. Social membership is also available if you prefer not to play, but would like to be part of our club. Why not come and have a go, you will be made very welcome and bowls are available to borrow initially.
Annual Bowling membership £35, Social membership £15.
