This month I’m looking forward to spending more time outdoors with family and friends, as we hopefully see the weather improving. I would love to include more local stories in the Arrow. Please email me any details of upcoming events, anything inspiring or positive that has been happening in the community, any good news stories that you would like to share. It can be something your child has achieved or a local team has achieved. I’m sure there is a lot going on and it would be great to be able to share the details.

The deadline for the July issue is Thursday 12th June. Best Wishes

Doncaster Spanish Society

Doncaster Spanish Society will be meeting on Thursday 19th June from 7pm to 9pm when its members Jackie Gladden and Jean Clark will be giving an illustrated talk on Diego Rivera and the Mexican Muralist Movement. Rivera is known mainly for his politically charged murals on public buildings particularly in Mexico City and the USA and for having been married to Frida Kahlo.

The speakers will focus on Rivera’s life, his art and muralism, an artistic movement inspired by the idealism of the Mexican Revolution. The talk will be in English and Spanish.

We will be at Doncaster Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Rd, Belle Vue Way, DN4 5HU. Parking is on site and entry is £4 for non-members. Drinks can be bought at the bar and the society will provide snacks

If you can, please check our Facebook page for any changes to the programme. (https://www.facebook.com/Doncaster-SpanishSociety)

Friends of Quarry Park

The Friends had a busy morning on Friday 2nd May when 18 volunteers were joined by Rangers Louise and Sam. We continued tidying areas of the park by trimming around way marker and orienteering posts and benches; cutting back brambles and nettles along the pathways and ensuring any potentially dangerous overhanging branches were removed. Five bags of litter were picked along with the front part of a bicycle.

We also started building our first dead hedge in St Mary’s Wood. This will provide habitat for insects and small animals as well as somewhere to stack fallen branches. We hope to build more of these hedges in different areas of the park.

Everyone enjoyed refreshments after all the hard work with delicious cakes supplied by our wonderful bakers Debra and Julie. Ian and Hannah from Doncaster Council dropped by (I think they’d heard about the cakes!) who chatted to the volunteers and even helped to water some of the new trees! They were there to carry out some drone photography of the park which they have shared with us. The footage is amazing and great to see the park from the air! The pictures will be shared on our Facebook page. Great work as always, well done to everyone.

There is a lovely show of bluebells this year and the wildflower meadows have now been seeded. We need some rain now to set them off.

The judging for the Green Flag award took place recently, so fingers crossed all the hard work pays off and we retain the flag for the 9th consecutive year!

Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 16th June, 7.30pm at the Flarepath in Dunsville. All are welcome to attend.

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. Tasks include litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear.

The next events are scheduled for Friday 6th June and Friday 4th July 10am – 12 noon, meet at the picnic table.

Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.
