Welcome to the June 2025 issue of the Hatfield Arrow.
This month I’m looking forward to spending more time outdoors with family and friends, as we hopefully see the weather improving. I would love to include more local stories in the Hatfield Arrow. Please email me any details of upcoming events, anything inspiring or positive that has been happening in the community, any good news stories that you would like to share. It can be something your child has achieved or a local team has achieved. I’m sure there is a lot going on and it would be great to be able to share the details.
The deadline for the July issue is Thursday 12th June.
Best Wishes
Julie Morrell

Friends of Quarry Park
The Friends had a busy morning on Friday 2nd May when 18 volunteers were joined by Rangers Louise and Sam. We continued tidying areas of the park by trimming around way marker and orienteering posts and benches; cutting back brambles and nettles along the pathways and ensuring any potentially dangerous overhanging branches were removed. Five bags of litter were picked along with the front part of a bicycle.
We also started building our first dead hedge in St Mary’s Wood. This will provide habitat for insects and small animals as well as somewhere to stack fallen branches. We hope to build more of these hedges in different areas of the park.
Everyone enjoyed refreshments after all the hard work with delicious cakes supplied by our wonderful bakers Debra and Julie. Ian and Hannah from Doncaster Council dropped by (I think they’d heard about the cakes!) who chatted to the volunteers and even helped to water some of the new trees! They were there to carry out some drone photography of the park which they have shared with us. The footage is amazing and great to see the park from the air! The pictures will be shared on our Facebook page. Great work as always, well done to everyone.
There is a lovely show of bluebells this year and the wildflower meadows have now been seeded. We need some rain now to set them off.
The judging for the Green Flag award took place recently, so fingers crossed all the hard work pays off and we retain the flag for the 9th consecutive year!
Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 16th June, 7.30pm at the Flarepath in Dunsville. All are welcome to attend.
Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. Tasks include litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear.
The next events are scheduled for Friday 6th June and Friday 4th July 10am – 12 noon, meet at the picnic table.
Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

We will be at Doncaster Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Rd, Belle Vue Way, DN4 5HU. Parking is on site and entry is £4 for non-members. Drinks can be bought at the bar and the society will provide snacks .

Hatfield Community Library
It has been wonderful to watch all the V.E. Day celebrations. I was sorry to miss the one in Dr Waters’ Garden as I was in the library all day on Thursday. However, our celebration in the library on Saturday 10th was both joyful and moving. The Hatfield Woodhouse Phoenix Players gave us a funny and moving experience. They performed a variety of sketches, songs and readings which had the audience laughing or in tears at the sad loss of life. The audience joined in singing some of the well- known popular songs of the time (We’re going to hang our washing on the Seigfried Line, It’s a long way to Tipperary) and some less well known (Coming in on a wing and a prayer. I didn’t raise my boy to be a soldier). The last two causing a few tears. I hope we hade the Union Jacks the right way up. We had a lot of advice and discussion on that matter.
The forty or so guests were joined by our special guests M.P. Lee Pitcher and Lew and Doreen Rhoades. Lew, a real gentleman, is one of the few surviving war veterans. Though not born in Hatfield, he has lived here long enough to be one of ours. His wife Doreen is one of our volunteers, so we were proud to have them both with us.
The performance ended with “We’ll meet again” (and several encores) then we all enjoyed a lovely tea.
We would like to thank the Hatfield Woodhouse Players for making this a memorable and enjoyable afternoon.
Our Family History groups also celebrated VE Day on Thursday 8th. I have mentioned they have done some research into local men who returned from the wars and collated their findings their findings into a booklet which they presented at their celebration lunch. M.P. Lee Pitcher and Lew Rhoades were present. Lew talked about his experiences during WW2.
Warm Place.
The library is a designated warm space so please come and join us for a hot drink and biscuit if you want to get out of the house and keep warm. I know that the weather is getting warmer, but you are still welcome to join us in the library. You can read, use your devices, chat, have a game of something and possibly use the computers if they are available. We have several parents with young children who come in to look at books and play with the toys. It is lovely to see them enjoying themselves and hopefully will encourage the use of books. We have a good selection of children’s fiction for all ages and non-fiction books which can help with research for schoolwork.
We have a variety of activities during the week some of which are free, but others have a fee. Dr Xand on “This Morning” was saying today that joining a singing group is one of the best things you can do. Not only for mental health but for physical health as well. Singing is good because it expands the lungs which helps to fight bad bacteria. Anyone who does Yoga will know how to breath fully, using all the lung space, and that it does make you feel better. We have two activities which can help with that. Yoga on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Then Singing on Friday 6:30-7:30. Leaving enough time to go out if you want or get home when it is still light. We have a regular core of singers but would love more people to join us
Finally, I have been enjoying my walks around Jubilee Field in this lovely weather. It has been a picture of green and white with trees and May blossom in abundance. Even the dandelions have conformed to the colour scheme as their golden heads have become globes of white parachutes.
