Editors Letter.... Did you know the first day of the month of May is known as May Day. It is the beginning of warmer weather, whilst flowers and blossom fill our gardens. Morris dancing, crowning of the May Queen and dancing round the Maypole are also a few of our many English traditions. This time of year the garden definitely needs some work, no matter how low maintenance it may be! There are a few adverts in this issue of the Arrow to tempt you into buying those Summer bedding plants and also if your lawn needs some tender loving care, give Greenthumb a call, it works out much cheaper then buying the DIY treatments! This month is the first of our „Flowers for Someone Special‟, courtesy of Jackie‟s Floral Designs in Crowle; please send in your nominations for that special person who deserves a bouquet. News, News, News, News, News, News, News... As you are probably aware by now the Arrow likes to support new businesses opening in the Isle. This month we have Smartest Baa None! opening in Epworth. The Arrow would like to wish Jane all the best for the future! Smartest, Baa None! is an exciting new children’s wear shop which is launching in Epworth’s Fountain Court on 1st May. The brainchild of Jane Keightley - Smartest, Baa None! will sell designer children's clothes, shoes, bags, toys and jewellery for all ages from birth to 6 years. Commenting on the launch of her new venture, Jane says: „We aim to create a relaxed atmosphere where customers will thoroughly enjoy their „shopping experience‟ with brands including Catamini, Joules, no added sugar, Timberland, Bunnies By The Bay and Funky Feet Fashions.

Just a reminder that the May meeting of the Isle of Axholme group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will take place on Thursday May 6th when Natasha Estrada will be giving us a talk about small mammals found in Britain. Saturday walk around the reserve at Messingham We are going to visit the reserve

on Saturday June 5th. We will meet in the car park at the reserve at 10am. Anyone who needs a lift or instructions on how to get there just ring Geoff on the number below. The walking is easy on flat paths and there are two hides and numerous seats so do come along and join us, all our meetings are open to anyone; you don‟t have to be a Trust member. Jane promises that Smartest, Baa None! will be anything but an ordinary children‟s clothes shop. Customers will also find an extra helping hand when it comes to planning and buying for children‟s birthdays, Christmas and special occasions with 'Wish Lists' and gift vouchers available. It is clear to see that Jane is overflowing with enthusiasm about her new shop: „‟I feel extremely passionate about the venture. I‟m determined to make Smartest, Baa None! a huge success and as I will have exclusivity of the brands I‟m stocking within a 10 mile radius of Epworth, Smartest, Baa One! will really be the smartest children‟s clothes shop locally, bar none‟‟.

The three priorities for the Axholme North Ward set at the Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting at Keadby on Tuesday 16th March 2010 are:Margrave Lane Garthorpe -Anti-social behaviour/ niusance issues involving young persons. At the Neighbourhood Action Team meeting held at Althorpe and Keadby School on Tuesday 16th March 2010 the three Neighbourhood priorities were set. Margrave Lane at PC1717 Garthorpe was identified as the top Graham Godley priority following a number of complaints to several partnership agencies regarding children playing football and congregating on the grassed area to the front of residential properties.

PCSO Wendy Frear

PCSO 7576 Paul Fearon

Derrythorpe Road Althorpe – Vehicle speeding issues. Concerns were raised regarding the speed of vehicles travelling through the village. Crowle Bank Road Althorpe – Vehicle speeding issues. Concerns were raised regarding the speed of vehicles travelling through the village. The Neighbourhood Team, Humberside Police Roads Policing and our Partnership Agencies will patrol and monitor the above hotspot areas and any offences will be dealt with positively. On Saturday 20 March 2010 a community consultation day was held at Manor Park ( Johnsons Lane Playing Field) Crowle to give residents the chance to discuss the redevelopment of the area. Unfortunately one very unwelcome guest in the form of persistent rain turned up before the public and kept them away. However the day was far from a „washout‟ with several ideas forthcoming and a significant contribution coming from the professional members of North Lincolnshire Council's Street Sports team. As a result of this event and from previous consultations the Manor Park Trust feel confident about generating the necessary business plan to improve the playing field area. On Thursday 25th March I accompanied Lynda Salmons of North Lincolnshire Homes on an estate inspections walkabout in Crowle and met up with local residents regarding their concerns in the area. Actions will be raised to have the reported problems dealt with. The Neighbourhood Team have continued to deal with anti-social use of motor vehicles and yet another young driver from Crowle has been given a Section 59 warning regarding the anti-social driving and any similar incidents will result in the seizing of his vehicle. Another male driver has been issued with a Police Vehicle Defect Form regarding a defective exhaust and will have to have the fault repaired and the vehicle checked at a MOT Testing Station or face court action. Three males from another police force area were arrested for theft of metal at Keadby and are currently on police bail whilst enquiries are continuing. A male and a female have been interviewed regarding theft from a garden in Keadby and a decision is being awaited regarding what further action is to be taken. A male has been dealt with for two offences of criminal damage to vehicles and for theft from a shop in Crowle. After speaking with the complainants, the male is to be dealt with under the restorative justice system and will be attending a Respect Seminar.

A number of males have been stop checked and spoken to regarding hare coursing in the area. Working with Pc Graham Godley are your Police Community Support Officers Paul Fearon and Wendy Frear who regularly patrols the North Ward area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please feel free to stop and speak with them or alternatively contact either of us via 0845 60 60 222 or by e-mail graham.godley, paul.fearon or wendy.frear @humberside.pnn.police.uk.

The police station at Epworth provides a front counter service on Mondays and Thursdays, between 9am and 3pm. There is also a Police Surgery held on the first Monday of each month at the Crowle Hub High Street Crowle between 2.00pm and 3.00pm. The next surgeries are on Monday 3rd May 2010 and Monday 7th June 2010. The date and location for the next Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting will be held at the Keadby School on Tuesday 22nd June 2010.

01427 875566 And how was YOUR Easter? Many of you know that I had a serious accident on Ash Wednesday, falling down 13 steps at a cottage we rented for half term in the New Forest. My Easter has been very different as for the first time in over 25 years, I took no services whatsoever! Indeed I wasn‟t even fit enough to write an article for ARROW. That‟s why I am so glad that every Sunday when we share Holy Communion, we can celebrate Easter all over again. There may not be any chocolate eggs on view but we still remember Jesus‟ life, His death and His resurrection – the very centre of what Easter is all about – Sunday by Sunday in our worship. So if you missed out on Easter this year for any reason at all, come and join us for a joyous celebration any time at All Saints Church. Even if I am not there because I am taking services elsewhere on the Isle, Jesus will be there with His very special friends! I can assure you of a warm welcome. St Norbert’s Catholic Primary School’s Newsletter St Norbert‟s has had another busy term following on from our success last term with both the Ofsted and RE Ofsted inspections. We again excelled at the Scunthorpe Speech and Drama Festival where the children in Years 1 and 2 won the Choral Speaking category. This was followed up by excellent individual performances. Our children were placed first, second and third in the Year 2 and under section of the humorous verse category together with other achievements throughout the festival. We are now busy practising for the Scunthorpe Choir Festival later in May with our choir, solo performers and our brass ensemble. We said a sad farewell to Father Chris this term and were joined by members of the Crowle and church communities to ensure he had a memorable send off. We wish him well in his new parish and look forward to welcoming Father Gabriel into our school and parish. As the new term approaches and our thoughts turn to some “warmer” weather, the children will be looking forward to spending some time outdoors. Children in Class 3 will be having a pedestrian skills course and Class 4, cycling proficiency. We are also organising a varied range of after school activity clubs including football, summer sports, netball, music, cookery and our new intergenerational cycling club on a Friday afternoon after school. We are also looking at an intergenerational dance class for later in the term. Plans for our Summer Fayre are underway together with a possible Summer Bingo to which everyone is invited. All in all, St Norbert‟s is normally a busy hive of energetic activity, and this term will be no exception!

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live

Your Local History

Adapted by Anthony Catherall

The Normans In 1066 William the Conqueror became King of England after defeating Harold at the Battle of Hastings. The Normans quickly set about ruling England with an iron fist, suppressing ruthlessly any Saxon rebellion. The lands of England were divided up between the Norman Barons who had helped William at Hastings. The Bishop of Constance was given the estates of the Isle of Axholme amongst others. These were passed on to his nephew, Robert de Mowbray. Later King William 11 confiscated the estates on account of Robert de Mowbray’s rebellion against him. Later they were conferred on Nigel d’ Albini. His son Roger took the Mowbray. The Mowbray’s built a castle at Owston Ferry. It was a mote and bailey castle with a man made hill on which the actual castle was built probably of wood. This was destroyed in 1173 after a rebellion by the Mowbray’s. The Mowbray family became one of the most prominent in England. In 1385 Thomas de Mowbray was made Earl Marshal of England. In the Isle, Thomas had churches built at Haxey, Epworth, Owston Ferry and Belton. He founded the Carthusian Monastery at Low Melwood. It was known at the ‘Priory in the Wood’. The monks were not allowed to eat meat or drink anything but water. The barons of England had despotic powers, but the Mowbray’s appear to have ruled fairly benevolently. In 1360 John de Mowbray granted a famous deed to his tenants that gave them free use of the wastelands adjacent to each parish. This deed caused a great deal of trouble to Vermuyden and his fellow drainage experts. It gave the tenants the right to dig the peat, collect the tree remnants and to rate their hemp in the waters of the wastes. It was signed at Epworth on May 1st 1360 and written in French. It is now amongst the public records in the Tower of London. The Doomsday Book compiled in 1086 gave the Normans an idea of the kind of country they had conquered. It gave the economic value of each of the manors and of the social standing of its inhabitants. Epworth, Haxey, Graizelound, East Lound, High and Low Burnham, West Butterwick and Crowle are all mentioned in the Doomsday Book. It gave the value of each manor as well as the number of ploughs, oxen’s teams, and amount of meadow and value of fisheries. The villages at this time would have been little better than a collection of hovels.

Next month only in the Arrow The Normans continued Make sure you see a copy... 12

CROWLE SHOW 2010 Sunday 27th June

New for 2010 Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting Batons of Steel Majorettes Sheep Section Axholme Ferrets Show Crowle‟s very own agricultural show is getting bigger this year. This year‟s show is taking place on the 27th of June. The best of the Isle and beyond will be showcased on Godnow Rd in Crowle. This year it will be bigger and better than ever. The organising committee hopes that the fabulous new attractions and wider range of classes will bring even more people out to enjoy the day. Among the usual entertainment, displays and activities, new attractions this year include Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting, the „Batons of Steel‟ Majorettes, the Axholme Ferrets Show and ferret racing. The attractions this year hope to promote all aspects of our town both as a rural center and as a great place to live. We hope to bring livestock and local produce to the forefront of this years show. Following the success of local butcher Dave Parkin‟s cattle classes last year, these will continue to be run alongside new sheep classes. The horse section goes from strength to strength, make sure you see the glamorous ladies riding side saddle and the showjumping which promises to be as hotly contested as ever. The dog show features a whopping 156 classes, plus a companion dog show in aid of Macmillan cancer research. Other attractions include vintage cars, engines and motorbikes; trade stands and shops from all over the county and much, much more! We want as many people as possible to come down and celebrate our town this year. Get involved in the clay pigeon shooting, support your local businesses, compete in the classes or just come along to meet your friends. On Friday 9th April, Michelle Sidebottom founder of Arrow Publications celebrated her 40th birthday in style! Her husband Sid organised a „Pink Stretch Hummer‟, which travelled around Doncaster stopping off at homes of friends, who all welcomed her with special surprises. From champagne, chocolate, balloons and banners Michelle was received like royalty. I would personally like to say a big thank you to Michelle, without her I wouldn‟t be where I am today working with the Arrow magazine. On meeting Michelle I found her very kind and thoughtful; she welcomed me on board and to this day I appreciate everything she has done for me. Not only a work colleague Michelle has also proved to be a very special friend. Special thanks also goes to Peggy and her team at Trax FM, who very kindly announced Michelle‟s birthday on their radio station at such short notice. So here is to Michelle on reaching her „landmark‟ and I am sure all the readers of the Arrow wish her all the best.
