Welcome to the March issue of Crowle and Ealand Arrow

Wow we are already in March, how each year just seems to go quicker and quicker!

This year Mothering Sunday is on 19th March. Did you know its a Christian holiday that is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent. For many people in the UK and Ireland, Mother's Day is the time to honor their mothers and give them flowers or chocolate. Religious traditions that have been preserved include baking and eating simnel cake which is also typically made for Easter.

Deciding where and what to buy?

Pop into a local family-run bakery for a lovely cake, or buy a quirky gift from an independent shop, by shopping locally people can help local business owners and local communities keep running.

I am sure there is a local shop on your High Street or neighbouring village who will have the perfect gift for your mum!

Enjoy the read

The deadline for the April issue is Friday 10th March for delivery by the 1st April.

Epworth and District Flower Club

Epworth and District Flower Club began their 2023 meetings with an enjoyable evening meal at The Epworth Tap in January. Their February meeting was the AGM, held in St Andrew’s Church, Epworth now the usual venue. The March meeting will be a “Supermarket Challenge” when volunteer members will demonstrate arranging flowers bought at supermarkets by other members. This has provided an interesting evening in the past with the opportunity for members to ask questions and offer up personal tips.

Do come and join us. We meet at 7.30pm on the second Monday of each month and follow the demonstration with a raffle of the arrangements, when appropriate, and enjoyable refreshments. Details can be had from Celia Jones 07784 421273

Since 2005, the Isle of Axholme Rotary club

have enjoyed helping many good causes both local and International to the tune of tens of thousand of pounds. Some of you may know us from our senior citizen’s annual tea party, our cycling exploits or our Teddy Tombola at the Epworth lights turn on event, to name but a few. Along the way we have formed great friendships, many good memories and helped countless groups and individuals to realise their own ambitions. We pride ourselves on our relaxed approach and focus on having fun.

Sadly, and like many voluntary groups, our numbers are currently such that we are being forced to question whether we are viable moving forwards. If we can’t grow our numbers, Rotary on this Isle will be forced to close its doors and the good work will cease.

We are reaching out into our communities with a plea, hoping that we can regenerate. We’re sure there are many more like minded people who would welcome the opportunity to give something back, form new friendships, inject fresh ideas and enjoy the satisfaction of helping others.

Our ask is that you give a little thought to whether the time may be right for you, or, someone you may know. It’s not an onerous undertaking, we meet every couple of weeks, enjoying a meal together once a month in a local pub.

If this does strike a chord please do get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.

Winter marches on but the first signs of spring are just beginning to peep through. The great Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi interpreted the changing of the seasons magnificently in his The Four Seasons concerti (very familiar to anyone who has ever spent time on hold on the phone) and Vivaldi is the star of the show in the upcoming concert by the Isle Choral Singers on Saturday, March 18th when the choir will be performing his choral work Gloria at St Andrew's Church in Epworth.

The opening movement of the piece is probably well known to many but the choir will be performing all 11 movements of Vivaldi's masterpiece - Gloria in all its full glory!

The programme also includes works by Handel and sharing the stage with us will be the Isle of Axholme Orchestra. March 18th is just three days short of the official first day of spring so a concert of beautiful music, beautifully performed is just the boost we all need after a long, cold winter. And if you like what you hear, why not consider joining Isle Choral Singers to make more beautiful music together? We rehearse every Monday from 7.15pm-9.15pm at the Imperial Hall in Epworth under the expert guidance of conductor Robert Steadman and accompanist Maurice Davies.

The Isle Choral Singers with the Isle of Axholme Orchestra perform Vivaldi's Gloria and other works on Saturday, March 18th, at St Andrew's Church, Epworth. Tickets £7 on the door.

Care for a Cuppa campaign to support hospice care

A local charity-run hospice and healthcare provider is urging people to pop the kettle on in March to help raise the much-needed funds it needs to provide its care.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice & Healthcare, which celebrated its 30th birthday in 2022, has launched its ‘Care for a Cuppa’ fundraising campaign to help it continue to deliver its specialist palliative care and support to North Lincolnshire patients and their families, who are living with life-limiting illnesses. To coincide with the campaign, the Lindsey Lodge Fundraising Team will be taking part in a ‘Thankathon’ to say a massive ‘thank you’ to everyone who has supported the Burringham Roadbased charity during its anniversary year.

Lindsey Lodge Head of Fundraising Kirsty Walker said: “We’re going to be a contacting our supporters to say a huge thank you, as without their generous fundraising activities and donations we really couldn’t continue to do what we do.

“Like everyone, we’re seeing our costs go up, so every penny people donate to us really does make a difference!”

She added: “Whether it’s a cup of tea or coffee, or even a hot chocolate, signing up to Care for a Cuppa is a lovely way to catch up with friends, family or even work colleagues – and everyone who takes part will really be making a difference to local people, who urgently need the Hospice’s help.” Everyone who registers to Care for a Cuppa will receive their very own fundraising pack to help get started with their event. They will also receive a copy of Lindsey Lodge Volunteer Jill Perry’s famous fail-safe scone recipe, as well as some of her other homemade favourites to provide them with inspiration.

People can sign up free of charge online now at www.lindseylodgehospice.org.uk by email at llh.enquiries@nhs.net or by phoning the Fundraising Team on 01724 270835.

Lindsey Lodge’s supporters have already arrange Care for a Cuppa events in Messingham, Crowle, Scotter and Burton, which will be posted on its website and social media channels in the coming weeks.,
