Toward inspiration
Welcome to the first issue of Top Glass. The idea of this annual magazine is simple: present the most exciting, most innovative architectural glazing projects in Canada, with full discussion of their technical elements.
There are lots of magazines around showcasing great architecture, and Glass Canada and some American publications talk about technical glazing matters, but I believe this is the only magazine you will get that does both.
I was speaking recently to Scotty Cooke of Optimum Studios in Vancouver (you can read about that conversation in this month’s Glass Canada) and he made an interesting comment. We were talking about his background and how he ended up in the trades after going to college for business school. He said, “I started to wonder if this was really for me. I felt like something was missing, like I wanted to be doing something more creative.” To satisfy that itch, he left business school and went into...plumbing.
This may surprise you, but a lot of people outside the trades do not consider such work to be creative. Functional, yes. Useful, certainly. Ingenious, maybe. But not creative. Creativity is for rock stars, painters and, maybe, architects. Glaziers? People who work with their hands? Not creative.
I hope this magazine stands as a refutation of those people. In these pages you will find some of the most innovative, technologically advanced glazing projects in Canada and in the world. As you read the reviews attached to each project, you will see the incredible creativity and knowledge not just of the architects who designed these buildings, but of the contractors, building engineers and glazing tradespeople involved in their construction. You just cannot come up with solutions like these without engaging the right side of your brain. It requires lateral thinking and unconventional approaches.
It also requires inspiration, and I hope Top Glass inspires you. There is often grumbling in this industry about declining standards and a lack of investment in training, research and development. These troubles may exist as trends, but if glazing capabilities are dropping in Canada, they are coming down from a high place. I would hope anyone in the commercial, institutional or industrial glazing business would look at the projects featured here and feel excited about stretching their capabilities and reaching for new heights.
I would love to hear your comments and criticisms related to Top Glass Please do call or e-mail if you have either. •

A WAVE OF FLOWING LIGHT A WAVE OF FLOWING LIGHT BRADFORD WEST GWILLIMBURY LEISURE CENTRE

Channel glass creates a glowing welcome for the community.
by JEFF RAZWICK
Ontario’s new Bradford West Gwillimbury Leisure Centre is one of the largest multi-use recreation facilities in the province. Designed by Salter Pilon Architecture in association with Lett Architects, its inviting, open layout and simple way-finding create a sense of shared space and community for users, who can select from the centre’s NHL-sized ice rinks, pool complex, double gymnasium and community areas.
Although a leisure centre, the building does more than foster a healthy lifestyle through recreational and cultural activities. Its 1,400-square-foot serpentine channel glass wall helps creates a visual “wow-factor” for local residents – which is one of the town’s three core visions for the new facility.
The wave-shaped channel glass facade in the Centre flanks the building along the east exterior wall and serves as a surround for a lobby, meeting room and multipurpose room. It consists of U-shaped, translucent cast-glass channels mounted in an aluminum perimeter frame. Unlike conventional windows and glass block, the slender frames and linear channel glass segments allow for tight radii – as low as 1.9 metres. While this flexibility enabled the design team to create a serpentine configuration, one technical challenge was ensuring a homogenous appearance in areas of the facade with different radii.
Channel glass segments tangent to one another flow smoothly into adjacent curves or straight sections. Where different radii prevent tangent segments, creating a seamless transition becomes more complex. To overcome this challenge and ensure the U-shaped channel glass did not interfere with the joint connection, the glazier installed flange channel glass planks on one side of this transition, and full channel glass planks on the opposing side. This allowed the channel glass framing head and sill components to be stretch-formed into a smooth continuous structure with a precise radius, versus segmenting the head and sill at precise angles to achieve a simulated radius, as is typically done with storefront glazing. The solution allowed

community.
the design team to form tight curves without interrupting the wall’s uniform look. It also streamlined the installation process, eliminating the need to fabricate and install numerous channel glass sections to achieve the desired look.
The serpentine channel glass application, which is formed primarily of channel glass in a standard cast, diffuses light through its textured surface while also obscuring vision.
To balance light transfer with privacy, and enhance visibility to the exterior of the building in select areas, the building and design team interspersed small groups of clear channel glass among the standard cast-glass channels. The mixture of the obscure standard cast glass and the clear glass offers both privacy and diffused light conditions and some areas where greater visibility provides occupants with views to nature. The application of a low-emissivity coating helped the facade achieve better thermal performance.
Channel glass is unique in that individual glass lites can be

Multi-purpose rooms, gyms, pools and ice rinks are pulled together with generous interior glazing.
The use of channel glass enabled Aeroloc to execute tight radii while still working with other areas of the facade that had longer curves. Clear and cast-glass channels were interspersed to balance privacy and lighting.

THE MARRIAGE OF THE CLAIRE AND MARC BOURGIE PAVILION
by COLLEEN CROSS
It’s hard to imagine a better symbol of Canadian technical expertise in fenestration than a multifaceted crystal igloo offering a view of Montreal’s Mount Royal.
The 12,000-square-metre expansion of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal), which features the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion of Quebec and Canadian Art topped by the multi-mullioned atrium, provides a stunning example of the integration of past and present.
Montreal’s Provencher Roy + Associés Architectes, led by Claude Provencher and Matthieu Geoffrion, worked with 450 professionals and craftsmen from 2011 to 2013 to marry museum function and late 19th-century history.
The Erskine and American Church’s 146 stained glass windows, including 20 original Tiffany windows, some 20 feet high by more than five feet wide, represent the past.
“The first challenge was to take all of them down without breaking anything because

Old Montreal meets a modern artistic vision.
they were really in a bad condition due to mainly the sun,” says Matthieu Geoffrion, partner at Provencher Roy. The stained glass was restored by La Pierre de Lune, of Montreal.
Standard double-glazed low-e IG panels were placed in the church windows before the decorative glass was reinstated to protect it from the elements. The panels, which are standard half-inch space and a quarter-inch, were supplied by Oldcastle
Building Envelope and installed by Vitreco Inc., both of Montreal.
“We reinstalled the stain glass inside as a piece of art and not as a technical material to prevent water and cold from coming in,” says Geoffrion, “because at first the stain glass was really the skin that was separating the outside from the inside. So we reinstalled them inside in a steel frame that permits us to open them and clean the exterior window as well.”
ABOVE: Careful geometry, innovative gutter designs, advanced glass coatings and meticulous fabrication all came into play to create the atrium that tops the new pavilion. The IG panels are so insulating that snow can accumulate on them. Visitors are afforded a beautiful view of Mount Royal.

P G Metal Repentigny, a company just outside Montreal, installed smaller pieces of the steel frame around the windows and larger pieces on continuous hinges.
At one stage, there were more than 10 workers installing glazing on the roof, says Vitreco’s Marc Biloveau, a feat accomplished by subcontracting a 35-pound-capacity crane with suction cup.
The results are spectacular. “All the stained glass panels are lit so you can appreciate all the artwork as well during the day or during the night,” says Geoffrion. To do this, they installed electric lighting around the perimeter of the glass on the wood frame and used a small reflector.
The pavilion features several huge bay windows, some as big as 1.5 by three metres. They went with triple-glazed, argon-filled IG units to prevent condensation in a high-humidity environment of 50 per cent of humidity.
“There’s a lot of heat gain so the value 0.22 was to achieve the shading coefficient that would be OK with the mechanical system inside of building, that they would be sufficient to procure a standard 20-degree temperature inside even if it’s much more outside.”
The atrium’s many angles presented several challenges. One challenge was to facilitate proper drainage.
Orbi Metal, of Laval, did the metal work. “Because everything was not standard and they didn’t want to make a die for six feet of new mullion, they built mullion,” says Biloveau. They took existing mullion and added another mullion at the top, modified that mullion, and so on.

“Between the angle of two mullions we used a membrane system . . . we had a new membrane from Supermart – it’s not a hydro, it’s a spray – and we took the angle between two panes of ceiling, of roof, and used that like a big gutter system.”
Of creating a seamless effect, he says: “How do you achieve two different planes that are not at a 90-degree angle, how do you achieve this continuity of your main mullion when you start from the floor and then it goes up vertically and then you change angle and then you change again? It’s really a question of geometry and choosing the right relationship between the glass and the mullion.”
Provencher Roy worked in 3D to make design decisions early on, verify the junctions, and, in co-operation with Vitreco and Orbi, create the underlying structure and co-ordinate workers’ site visits.
Geoffrion recalls one other problem relating to the insulating glass: it performed so well that snow sat on the glass instead of melting. With no heat loss, he says, they needed to use special glass “to reflect the sunlight rays off of the glass so we don’t end up with a sauna on the top level.”
Happily, their solution worked, and visitors can view Mount Royal in spectacular comfort. •

HANGING BY A THREAD KAYE EDMONTON CLINIC
by RICHARD BRIGHTLING

This Edmonton health clinic is a marvel of modern glass engineering.
Iconic design – these are two words that are often associated with the highest profile buildings in our communities but rarely associated with public health facilities. However, in the case of the recently constructed Kaye Edmonton Clinic,
the client’s bold vision of “a leading, state-of-the-art enabler of integrated, patient-centred care, education and research” opened the door to an equally bold design response. Dialog was engaged to design a new clinic capable of achieving the client’s vision on

THREAD
every level. In doing so, this would enable the world-class ambitions of the Kaye Clinic itself.
A key feature of the overall design is an expansive curving glass wall, rising seven stories to a height of 30 meters enveloping a large, light-filled atrium. The design intent was ambitious. The atrium and its glass wall began as an unreserved embrace of natural light, view, and ventilation; the building’s eyes and lungs as well as a demonstration of the client’s commitment to the physical and mental well being of its patients. The atrium also serves as the ultimate way-finding device, helping patients and visitors orient themselves when they first enter the building or find their way to an upper floor. From the perspective of the University of Alberta campus, of which the clinic is a major cornerstone, the curved glazed atrium helps anchor the primary access to the campus on one of the city’s main thoroughfares.
To keep the atrium as visually light as possible, slender steel columns were used as structural support. These steel columns were requested to be minimal in size, thus a system was needed to help carry the positive and negative wind loads on the facade’s expansive glass elevation. To achieve this glass feature, Stella Custom Glass Hardware was engaged to handle the required design, assist with engineering and design/manufacture/supply the glass hardware required to achieve the design team’s vision.
With a system pre-engineered by Dialog’s team of architects and engineers, Stella, Dialog, and Erdevicki Structural Engineering created a bow-truss cable support system. This is a proven but technically complex concept capable of holding and supporting the weight of the more than three hundred IGU units required for the feature elevation.
Stella began its mandate by building a scale model of the proposed structure to reaffirm the integrity of the proposed design and its component parts. After con-
siderable testing, final glass specifications were calculated and finalized by glass engineers, Division 8 Consulting.
The system called for a two-part cable truss working together to create a vertical bow-shaped configuration with the ends of each cable anchored at roof and ground floor. To achieve the required bows, horizontal compression struts were used. Each cable is 36 mm in diameter and tested to 945 kN (capable of lifting the equivalent load of two fully-loaded tractor trailer loads). Large clevises (weighing 13 kg each) attach to the end of cables and connect to anchor plates in the roof and floor.
When installed, the cables were pretensioned to 254 kN per cable. The talented installation teams from Edmontonbased Specialty Glazing and Wayward Steel Fabricators (overseen by general contractor PCL) made this engineering feat a successful reality.
To hold the glass in place, Stella designed an adjustable edge support bracket. Over 1,200 brackets are bolted to the horizontal mullion to the glass units, eliminating the need to drill holes in the glass. The glass IGUs are 2,200 mm high by 1,300mm wide with a makeup of 10/10 tempered glass, argon filled and with low-E coating.
The same team also collaborated on a visually minimal glass screen/guard on levels surrounding atrium.
Completed in 2012, it proudly showcases Canada’s highest cable truss system facilitating a simply amazing light-filled atrium. In this day and age of computer graphics, architectural concepts can be made to look highly appealing. In the case of the Edmonton Clinic South, it is fair to say that the finished building looks even better than the original concept drawing. The Kaye Edmonton Clinic has turned the city’s desire for world class design into a reality. A building where patients have lauded not only its design, but the feeling of well being that its concept has created for all to see and enjoy. •

The design called for a light, transparent look, so Stella, Dialog and Erdevicki designed a bowand-truss support system capable of supporting three hundred IGUs.The horizontal compression struts seen here are capable of holding up the weight of two fully loaded tractor trailers, each.

DR. WILLIAM D. FINN CENTRE FOR FORENSIC MEDICINE
A BRIDGE BETWEEN WORLDS A BRIDGE BETWEEN WORLDS

Serenity and science merge in Fitzgerald’s groundbreaking
by TREENA HEIN
Looking at a state-of-the-art facility such as Nova Scotia’s Medical Examiners’ facility – the Dr. William D. Finn Centre for Forensic Medicine in Dartmouth – one would think its curtainwall and glazing system would be complex and challenging to build and install. “The truth is it wasn’t,” notes Norsat Eblaghi and Stas Kharistonov, the president and design engineer at Alumitech Architectural Glass and Metal of Bedford, N.S. “Simple construction methods supported by a good design go a long way,” says Kharistonov.
Autopsies for all the suspicious deaths within the province take place at the facility, and its design presented interesting challenges for award-winning architect Susan Fitzgerald. She is at Fowler Bauld & Mitchell Architecture in Halifax, and also chairs the professional practice teaching group at Dalhousie University’s School of Architecture. “The Centre has to accommodate several diverse functions,” Fitzgerald explains. “It has to work efficiently as a place to perform autopsies, including the shipping and storing of the dead, and also must accommodate individuals who enter to identify their loved ones.” The Centre also has classrooms and observation spaces for education and interacting with law enforcement, administration space and areas for facility management.
To accommodate all these functions, Fitzgerald adopted a layered approach to the facility, which 1 is located on a flat site with few defining natural features. The Centre is actually divided into two separate buildings, one for administration and one for autopsy/ support where the pervasive odour of decomposing bodies is contained. They are arranged around a contemplative landscaped courtyard which separates and conceals the diverse activities that occur within the facility’s spaces. “This area is the focal point for the facility and provides access to daylight, fresh air and green space,” Fitzgerald explains. “It also offers privacy and security for the staff, away from the grieving families who come to the facility, and a refreshing, central area where the staff can interact and have a break from their very differing and intense roles.” By using natural elements, Fitzgerald sought to create a contemplative and serene building that supports staff on

groundbreaking design.
an ongoing basis as they interact with the dead.
The nature of the facility meant some unusual aspects to the curtainwalls. “The windows of the autopsy area had to provide a surface that was tough, can be easily cleaned, provides excellent light but also provides privacy,” Kharistonov notes. “We wrapped all the exposed interior surfaces of the frame with stainless steel cladding with as few joints as possible. The glass in the autopsy areas incorporates privacy film coating.”
The curtainwall that flows around the courtyard goes over the roof of the administration building, and then creates a section of the second floor that overhangs the parking lot. The Alumitech team worked closely with the designers, the structural steel contractor, roofing contractor and even the landscaping contractor to make sure the transitions between this curtainwall, two other curtainwalls that joined in at 90 degrees, the green roof, and the roof overhang (wrapped in Reynobond aluminum composite panels) were weather-tight. “It is unique in how the curtainwall is joined from slab to the soffit and flashing,” Kharistonov notes. “Also unusual are the sunshades set in a matrix of Solarban 70 XL low-E glass.”
The design also called for combination of captured and SSG mullions with SSG awning vents. “As the result, we had a number of vents that had to be designed to align with caps on one or two sides and to flow into SSG glass joints on the other sides,” Eblaghi explains.
For the facility’s building envelope, Alumitech used Kawneer’s newly introduced 1600 Wall System 1/2, which Eblaghi and Kharistonov say is a more versatile solution for curtainwall

The multifunctional nature of the Finn Centre demanded special consideration for each element of glazing. Requirements for privacy, daylighting, weather-resistance, energy efficiency and esthetics all varied from area to area.
and glazing construction than what is also available on the market. “The interconnection between materials and symmetry of design make this project stand out from others,” Kharistonov notes. “It required a great deal of coordination and input from all the trades in order to achieve the individual details and the overall look that Fitzgerald envisioned. We have a great team of professional workers who make jobs like this that much easier.” •

ART MEETS SCIENCE REGENT COLLEGE LIBRARY AND PARK
by COLLEEN CROSS
As part of her quest to bring artistic glass to the outside of buildings, renowned Toronto glass artist Sarah Hall designed True North/Lux Nova, a 40-foot wind- and solar-powered triangular glass tower whose dichroic glass glows atop the theological library at Regent College, University of British Columbia. The first installation in North America to combine art glass and solar, it won an award from the American Institute of Architects upon its completion in 2009, and caught the attention of architects at the University of Rome, who are studying Hall’s work for use in future architecture.
“For the most part, our kind of art glass has always been really seen from the inside and it’s just been very recently in the last 10 years that that we’ve been able to do things that are showing a lot more on the outside of buildings now,” says Hall.
The tower’s glass consists of a series of layers. Sarah Hall in collaboration with

Glasmalerei Peters created 12 panels, each six feet by two feet, and held in by aluminum channeling typical of curtainwall. “The thermal pane glass is an ultra white, five-millimeter tempered glass,” says Hall. “I then have a gap of two millimeters,
and inside of that is an adhesive which encloses the wiring and embedded solar cells.”
On the layer behind that is dichroic lamination. “Then we have the air gap and on the surface #2 is a fused glass, which

also has been airbrushed and fired. It’s a tempered glass so the whole thing is a thermal pane unit and the wiring runs through it and comes out at a little junction box and in every 12 panels the wiring comes out and is wired to the next panel and the next panel.”
The wire is hidden entirely in the channels that hold the glass in place. Filling the gap is a patented adhesive made by Saint-Gobain that helps the electrical wires to remain flexible and helps to conduct electricity.
Hall describes the design process. She created full-size drawings and an architectural model and completed the design work in Toronto. She then took her designs to Germany to work with Glasmalerei Peters, a firm that offers her access to kiln sizes and technologies not available in North America. Together they experimented with different techniques and created samples. Then Hall remained in Germany, where she worked with her team of artisans.

The designs on the glass are rich in symbolism from religion and mythology. The writing is Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus, and 12 dichroic crosses both reflect and gather light.
“The glass was first fused,” she says. “We took sheets which were slightly larger and after taking a section off, crushed this glass and spread it over the panel. It was then sent back in the kiln to fire and fuse giving a wonderful texture. The fused glass was then air brushed with mineral (cobalt and manganese) paints and re-fired. The glass painting and colour are completely permanent.”
New materials and methods of painting on glass, a material Hall says will not fade or change, have recently become more accessible to artists and less expensive. In the past, she sourced her dichroic glass through a scientific lab in Toronto, which can produce glass used to any angstrom unit specified. The dichroic glass used for this project came from Schott in Germany.
“The dichroic glass is a really exciting one to use as an artist because it has a very strong reflective ability. It’s those 12 crosses that you see in the artwork that are different colours of dichroic glass.”
Here’s where art meets science. The point of tower was to save energy and reduce heating costs on the inside, and to give the underground library great visibility.
The tower began to take shape when architect Clive Grout, who initially designed a square glass wind tower, asked Hall to collaborate on the structure. They changed it to a nine-foot-triangular-sided tower. This made air conditioning and additional electricity unnecessary in the library, which is heated and cooled using a radiant system, with the wind tower pulling fresh air up through the library and ventilating it.
The tower also is collecting energy from the sun, says Hall, which is stored in a battery bank and at night illuminates the tower and surrounding park. In the apex of the tower, a cylinder holds LEDs and displays a two-hour changing program of coloured lights.
Both beautiful and useful, True North/Lux Nova ultimately pays tribute

to the spirit of Regent College. “They wanted a symbol of their Christian identity but I didn’t want to do something that was too obvious,” explains Hall. “Many of the scholars at the college actually knew Aramaic and so it was a very natural step to bring the Lord’s Prayer in Aramaic into one of the layers. The solar layer is based on an image of a book opening. There is a layer of 12 dichroic crosses – viewed symbolically as the disciples or tribes of Israel or the labours of Hercules. I wanted people to wonder about the symbolism and use their own imagination. The dichroic glass reflects sunlight beautifully, so those 12 crosses are a very powerful part of the design. The final layer is a waterfall of light that is connecting all of the panels together artistically.” •

A MARK ON THE CANADIAN
by RICH PORAYKO
The Bow is an award-winning, world-class building guaranteed to impress. It is a project of many firsts for Canada including largest continuous concrete pour (three shifts, five hundred people with up to 95 trucks continuously pouring), tallest building in western Canada and largest urban excavation outside Toronto (17,000m2).
More recently, the German-based building and construction project database company Emporis ranked The Bow as one of the “world’s most spectacular corporate buildings,” rubbing shoulders with the likes of the Hearst Building in NYC and Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers.
In addition to a striking, graphical presentation on Calgary’s skyline, the Bow’s diagonal grid (diagrid) system provides superior structural efficiency. This diagonal and vertical steel frame significantly reduces the overall steel weight, as well as the number and size of interior columns and thickness of the elevator

The Bow is simply one of the world’s most advanced and impressive glazing projects.
shaft walls. Visually, the diagrid pattern is repeated every six stories, and a single unit of the pattern is referred to as a node. This is the first time a triangular diagrid system has been applied to a curved building design in a North American skyscraper. James Barnes, an associate with the design architect, Foster+Partners of
London, said that “by using the triangular diagrid structure, we were able to create a near column-free space within the building that allowed for a very flexible floor plate.” The aerodynamic crescent shape significantly reduces exterior wind resistance, downdraft and the urban venturi effect. Inside, the shape creates

a floor plan that maximizes access to views and natural light. It also creates a collaborative and open workspace for Encana and Cenovus employees.
“The most significant energy efficient feature is quite obvious when you look at the shape of the building and that is the side-facing atrium,” says Rob Eley, partner at project architect Zeidler Architects. “Generally, the intention was, when appropriate, to try to bring the sun’s warmth and energy into the structure and use it for air movement and heat gain. The building is actually cupped, facing the south, with the actual angle of the direction determined by the optimal orientation where the highest benefit would be gained. The fact the building isn’t entirely perpendicular with any of the surrounding streets actually is determined by the optimum orientation.”
There are two facades facing south. One of them is an interior facade, which is single-glazed with operable windows. “The approach for much of the height of the south facade is a double skin about a metre apart,” explains Eley. “The intention is to allow for natural air circulation within the interior of the building, which is provided by the heating of the volume of air in the south. This air movement permits offices behind the single-glazed wall to operate a window and get a sense of circulating air.”
Within the atrium are Sky Lobby levels whose locations have been determined in part by the efficiency of the elevator system. Eley elaborates: “One of the ideas that Foster+Partners was working with from the very beginning was these community floors act like a village centre where everyone within that atrium space would get out of the elevator at the same location and share common facilities such as coffee stations or meeting rooms. It’s almost like a miniature city.”
Eley continues, “Sota Glazing took on the interior and exterior wall for the atrium, which was quite a technical challenge because of the shape and the diagrid that is embedded into it.” Antamex installed the north facade, which had diagonals expressed in it as well, and
the east and west curved corners of the building. “The two of them together as a joint venture were able to deal with the contract but either of them singly or any other major glazing contractor would have had difficulty arranging the time and having the capacity to deal with this size of contract.”
Sota Glazing teamed up with Calgarybased Alberta Glass to take on the south facade with a custom curtainwall system that Sota developed to anchor to the horizontal steel members with a proprietary pivot mechanism designed to eliminate any tolerance issues with the structural steel. “We locked into the diagrid extrusions to build up the one-metre-wide panels and followed the pattern of the structural steel,” says Harry Nickel, vice-president of sales and marketing for Brampton, Ont.’s Sota Glazing. “The complexity was the fact there was no floor slab behind the outer curtainwall on the south facade apart from the first slab, which was 24 floors up, then only two more floors make up the next 34 stories before the roof,” explains Nickel. “In many regards, we were installing curtainwall in space. That was a challenge.”
The interior wall is a single, sixmillimetre, tempered monolithic system with perforated panels to help absorb sound and improve acoustics in the atrium areas. “Every office has a floor-toceiling, inward-tilting vent window,” says Nickel. “With the two walls, there was approximately half a million square feet of glazing in the south facade alone.”
“We went to Viracon for the glass because each IG unit was 3,920 millimetres tall and they were the only company that had the equipment to coat and fabricate insulating glass units that size,” says Nickel.
Sota Glazing glazed Canada’s tallest skyscraper, Toronto’s First Canadian Place, from the top down using a staging system developed to work from the exterior of the building. “We took some of the knowledge from First Canadian Place and partnered up with Alberta Glass, who installs curtainwall for Sota,” states Nickel. “They designed and developed a double-

“The design and installation were the big hurdles; however, everything worked out great. That’s one of the reasons we team up with Alberta Glass is because they have a good, solid labour force. And that’s why Matthews Development and Ledcor came to us.” •
CLASSIC DESIGN MEETS ENERGY EFFICIENCY CLASSIC DESIGN MEETS ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Toronto’s iconic City Hall is given modern performance maintaining the look that made it famous.
by ROB WOOD
Toronto City Hall was officially opened in 1965. In 2009, as part of a series of energy efficiency upgrades, C3 Polymeric was awarded the contract to undertake the design and replacement of the original windows. The original system included 3/8-inch vision lites glazed using a lock strip gasket in a non-thermally broken, stainless steel frame. An interior film had been applied postconstruction, which had experienced significant degradation. Occupants complained of discomfort due to inconsistent temperatures and significant glare in their working environment. This had negative impacts on both energy efficiency and employee productivity and morale.
The original city hall design by Finnish architect, Viljo Revell, was the winning entry of an international design competition for a new Toronto City Hall. The City Hall is an established Toronto landmark and tourist destination. In 1991 it was officially designated as a heritage property. In undertaking the retrofit, the architectural significance and heritage designation of the building required consideration. All changes to the building had to be approved by Heritage Preservation Services. Should they not be satisfied, they had the ability to veto the project. The primary heritage criteria were as follows:
• Aside from the existing glazing and gasket, all components of the historic fabric of the building had to remain.
• The new system had to be reversible. That is, it had to be possible to reinstall the original glazing system at some point in the future.
• It must minimize the decrease in the daylight opening (visible area).
• It must respect the architect’s original design intent.
The scope of the project included the preliminary design and evaluation of six different alternatives. These comprised a lock strip gasket system, a stainless steel frame

performance credentials while
system, and an aluminum frame system, each glazed from the exterior or interior. Each of the six systems was evaluated on:
• Health and safety
• Heritage
• Thermal performance
• Technical performance (air, water)
• Project cost and lifecycle cost
• Structural loading criteria
The area surrounding city hall had changed significantly since its construction in the 1960s. In addition, its unique shape made it probable that typical load tables may not apply. As such, wind tunnel testing was completed to refine the structural criteria. The testing was completed at The Boundary Layer wind tunnel laboratory at the University of Western Ontario. The testing resulted in a design load of up to 80 pounds per square foot. That is more than double the load that might be expected from a simple building of similar height in Toronto.
None of the design alternatives originally considered met all of the design criteria. As such, a hybrid design was developed. A custom aluminum frame clad on the interior with stainless steel enabled the design team to harness the structural and technical benefits of an extruded aluminum system, while at the same time respecting Revell’s use of stainless steel as a primary design element. Custom aluminum closures were added on the interior to hide the glazing leg on the frame. A black anodized

finish was selected to replicate the visual impact of the original zipper gasket. The aluminum frames were designed such that the reduction in the daylight opening was minimized. The use of conventional systems would have resulted in a larger loss of daylight opening and would not have satisfied the heritage criteria. A pressure-equalized, drained cavity on the exterior was

incorporated to improve the robustness of the system and to meet the technical requirements. The system was fully captured and used a narrow-profile, black anodized snap cap. Custom aluminum tubes were designed to retrofit the surround so that it could accommodate the new frame. The tubes were designed
in a manner such that they could be removed at a later date if required, thereby helping to satisfy the heritage criteria. A total of 16 custom aluminum, neoprene and PVC extrusions were designed for the new system.
Two full-scale replicas of the existing framing system were constructed in C3 Polymeric’s shop. Mockups of the new system were installed in the replica frames. The entire assembly was lab tested by Can-Best for thermal, structural, and air and water performance.
The models also enabled C3 Polymeric to conduct mock installations in a controlled environment. These were used to explore improvements to the design and installation methodology. The new system is significantly different from commercially available glazing systems. The installation team had to be trained on the unique aspects of the system, and the key points to monitor to ensure a quality installation. The models allowed the installation crews to train and become familiar with the differences and nuances of the new system prior to being on site.
Eight full-scale mockups were installed on the east tower in 2010. The construction on the two towers was split into two separate projects. The east tower, comprising 780 units was completed in late 2011. The west tower, comprising 444 units, was completed in the fall of 2012. Both projects were finished on time and under budget. Since completion, building operations has reported a decrease of environment-related complaints of approximately 90 per cent. •

Refined Technology. Real Performance.
Automated efficiency takes insulated metal back pans and curtain-wall engineering to a new level. Refinements to traditional building envelope technology have put Lenmak Exterior Innovations’ EnvaTherm® back pans ahead of the competition.
Innovation in foam delivery technology yields soft, even, self-sealing insulation that provides a competitive R-value for consistent, reliable performance. The breathable foil backing maximizes thermal performance and protects against fire and UV damage.
EnvaTherm® insulated back pans have many clear advantages:
• Meets Canadian National Building Code requirements for use as a component of a non-combustible
assembly (NBC 2010 3.1.5.5.; CAN/ULC-S134 Fire Test of Exterior Wall Assemblies)
• Automated production and lean manufacturing mean competitive lead times
• There is no loss of thermal performance due to air movement through panels
• Minimize the entry of drafts, humidity and allergens; does not support growth of mold
• The use of stick-pins is not required
• 80% lighter than panels that use traditional curtain-wall technology
• Each panel is totally self-contained for easy installation, handling and shipping
• Oversized panels maintain complete seal when properly installed
• Prevent noise transfer
EnvaTherm® insulated back pans are designed for use in curtain-wall systems in conjunction with a variety of architectural finishes, including opaque glass panels featuring UV-resistant finishes or metal panels for areas that do not require glass. Innovation in insulation technology ensures efficiency of production and proven real-world performance.
