The restaurant employs a dozen people and prides itself on serving dishes with a nod to the “Old Country.” Diners can feast on several signature dishes, including their bone-in veal chops that are so big that they take up the entire plate, their linguini and clams and their Italian stuffed artichokes. Patrons can also dive into their fresh fish dishes, chicken or veal parmigiana with pasta, or perhaps for dessert, their amazingly delicious homemade cannolis.

Perhaps their calling card is their "World Famous Expresso Martinis,” among other specialty cocktails that are infused with rosemary, ginger and other herbs to give them an authentic flair and taste.

Palmisano said that his goal for operating a successful restaurant is simple: “I want people to feel like they are eating at my house.”

He noted about how meals are cultivated back in Italy. “It starts with visiting the local butcher shop for the freshest meat, then walking to the garden to select the vegetables, and maybe to the local store to pick up a bottle of wine. Palmisano said that the restaurant strives to maintain this tradition because “farm to table” offers the best quality and flavors for their customers.

“I hope that when customers visit Anthony’s Italian Cuisine, they enjoy a little piece of Italy with every made-to-order dish,” he said.

The restaurant is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The bar remains open one hour after closing.

amount of prep work for them. Now, an option for those short on funds and time: the Reserve service by Clear, a free program that allows customers to book a spot ahead of time that sends them to the front of the line at TSA checkpoints.

The Transportation Department filed a lawsuit against Southwest Airlines saying passengers were harmed by certain “chronically delayed” flights. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said airlines have “a legal obligation” to give customers realistic schedules to avoid deceiving them, the New York Times reports. “Today’s action sends a message to all airlines that the department is prepared to go to court in order to enforce passenger protections,” he said in a statement. The flights cited were between Chicago Midway and Oakland, as well as between Baltimore and Cleveland, in 2022. They arrived late almost 200 times between that April and August, per CNBC.

The Clear site explains how the process works: In advance of your flight (how long in advance depends on the airport), you’d simply log on to make a reservation for the time you’d like to pass through security. You’ll receive a QR code that, on the day of your flight, you’ll show to a staffer in the Reserve lane near the TSA checkpoint. The service isn’t available at every airport (there are about 20 in the US, Canada, and Europe currently listed) and even at those airports, the service may be limited to certain areas. A company rep said they’re working on adding more airports into the mix.

The government wants Southwest to pay more than $2.1 million in civil penalties in the case. The airline said it’s disappointed that the department “chose to file a lawsuit over two flights that occurred more than two years ago.” Since the government policy went into effect in 2009, Southwest said, it’s operated more than 20 million flights without violating it.

Shop In RI Selects: The Taste of Maine Restaurant in Woolwich, Maine for having the world’s largest lobster roll.

Shop In RI Selects: Mardi Gras, New Orleans as their #1 party destination of the month.

Mardi Gras is the ultimate celebration if you’re looking to let loose, experience incredible energy, and dive into a rich cultural tradition. It’s a time when the streets come alive with vibrant parades, colorful costumes, and endless music—especially jazz, brass bands, and upbeat tunes. Beyond the fun, it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in New Orleans’ unique history, with all its revelry, creativity, and even a bit of magic. The food is legendary, too, with crawfish, beignets, and gumbo to fuel the party. Whether you’re there for the wild street parties, the mesmerizing floats, or just to soak in the oneof-a-kind atmosphere, Mardi Gras offers an unforgettable experience that’s all about letting go and celebrating life in full swing.

There are a few food items that are synonymous with Maine, one of them being the ever-so-delicious lobster roll. Tourists have been flocking to every corner of the Pine Tree state for decades to devour the delicacy. However, not all lobster rolls are built the same. Often, the biggest complaint people have about a lobster is...not enough lobster. So, the Taste of Maine restaurant in Woolwich decided to solve that problem once and for all. Shared on Facebook by Taste of Maine restaurant, they claim to be serving the world’s largest lobster roll, a monster sub at least three times the size of a typical lobster roll. The number one question in comments seems to be about the price. Given current market conditions for lobster, the daily market price for the ’world’s largest lobster roll’ has been between $150 and $170. Some will scoff at the price, but if you’re traveling from afar just to get your hands on a Maine lobster roll, why not try the largest one?

Sugarbush is an overlooked gem among its peers, with many skiers heading to nearby Killington, Stowe, or Mad River Glen over this double mountain resort. So why shouldn’t you do the same? To put it simply, Sugarbush offers practically everything that those more popular ski areas boast, minus the crowds. So if you fancy schussing down a freshly groomed slope without queuing for a lift or dodging snowploughers this could be just the place for you!

Fourth of July Airfare Down

Spirit Airlines Updates Dress Code for Passengers

By 27% From Last Year

A “chronically delayed” flight is one operated at least 10 times a month that’s late by at least 30 minutes more than half the time. According to the aviation data provider Cirium, Southwest canceled fewer than 1% of its flights last year, though more than 22% arrived at least 15 minutes late. Delta, United, Alaska, and American posted fewer comparable delays.

Reserve customers must still remove their shoes and jackets and take their electronics out for screening. Clear also offers a paid service called Clear Plus, which for the price of $189 per year allows users to not only skip to the front of the line, but also to not have to show ID; instead, your eyes or fingerprints are scanned. TSA PreCheck also offers a paid service ($78 for five years) that, because you’ve gone through advance vetting, means you don’t have to remove your shoes, jacket, laptop, or other items. Reserve remains an option for those who don’t want to pay. “Travelers can now save even more time by seamlessly reserving their spot in the security line,” a Clear rep said in a statement.

Frontier also was hit with a fine of $650,000 for operating chronically delayed flights, the government said Wednesday. Of that, $325,000 will be suspended if Frontier has no violations for the next three years. JetBlue Airways was fined $2 million earlier this month in a similar case.

Travelers who plan to fly over the Fourth of July holiday weekend can expect to pay less for their domestic tickets this year, as round trip tickets will be 27% lower this year than they were at the same time in 2022.

Spirit Airlines has tightened up its dress code for passengers, with “offensive” tattoos now on the forbidden list. But what constitutes “offensive” in the case of body art is not spelled out, notes the New York Times. Some of the new changes:

A round-trip ticket this year will cost a traveler a little more than $300, which is over $100 cheaper than last year. The prices of round-trip tickets are in line with how much round-trip tickets cost in 2019, according to an analysis by Hopper.

Terrain: The resort is made up of two interconnected mountains, Lincoln Peak, where the majority of trails are, and Mount Ellen. Other lower peaks include Castle Rock, Gadd Peak and North Lynx. For the type of gnarly terrain you would expect from Mad River Glen, just hop aboard the Castle Rock Double chair to Castle Rock. From the top at 3,812 ft, you’ll have the steep double black chutes of Lift Line and Rumble to get stuck into. If clocking up maximum vertical drop is more your thing then you’ll find the slopes here laid out much better for top-to-bottom shredding than at Killington. Even if you ski all 111 trails here, there’s also 2,000 ac of backcountry to explore in the Slide Brook Basin area!

Not allowed: Flyers can get booted off a plane if they are “barefoot or inadequately clothed (ie, see-through clothing; not adequately covered; exposed breasts, buttocks, or other private parts) or whose clothing or article, including body art, is lewd, obscene, or offensive in nature,” according to the rules, per NBC News.

This year, the most booked destination in the United States over the Fourth of July weekend, which is from June 30 through July 4, is Las Vegas. The domestic cities that follow include

Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago, and New York City.

June 29 and June 30 are expected to be the busiest days of the holiday weekend, with 3.7 million people expected to depart from U.S. airports on both days. The least busy day of the long weekend will be on the Fourth of July itself. A total of 3.5 million people are expected to depart from airports on July 5.

Town: If all that wasn’t enough, Sugarbush is generally a notch cheaper than pricey Stowe, but not at the sacrifice of luxury. For lavish lodgings, look no further than Lincoln Peak Village. tops. Would crop tops now qualify as “inadequately covered?” It’s tough to say. Still, the Times notes that Spirit’s language, while vague in parts, goes into more detail than the rules at other major airlines. Southwest, for instance, bars clothing that is “lewd, obscene, or patently offensive,” without more detail. The Washington Post quotes travel industry analyst Henry H. Harteveldt with this test for air passengers questioning their outfits: “Would you wear that if you were going to confession or visiting a friend in the hospital?”

The busiest airport in the country is expected to be Atlanta’s, where over 1.8 million travelers are expected to pass through. Other airports which will be exceedingly busy include Dallas (DFW), Denver (DEN), Los Angeles (LAX), and Las Vegas (LAS).

It’s the tallest active geyser on the planet— with an emphasis on “active.” From 2015 to 2017, it didn’t erupt at all. There was another largely quiet period from 1911 to 1961, but in 2018 it logged a record-setting 32 eruptions, a feat it has crushed this year with 47 eruptions, per the US Geological Survey. Why? Good question, and one that hasn’t been answered. It’s one on a long list of geyser mysteries, in fact. The geyser-research field is a thin one, and as Yellowstone National Park’s hydrologist explained the area beneath Steamboat hasn’t been mapped. However, seismic sensors there have revealed that the geyser’s water source may sit as deep as 130 feet.

When the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills to advance to the Super Bowl, one of the key moments came on a 4th-and-1 play in the final quarter. Bills quarterback Josh Allen tried a QB sneak, and it was so close that one official said he made it and another said he didn’t, notes Sports Illustrated. After a video review, officials ruled against Buffalo, and KC got the ball back and scored a go-ahead TD on the ensuing drive. It’s all but impossible to know with certainty whether the refs got the call right given the pileup of players, and that has critics wondering why the NFL hasn’t yet put a chip in the ball and made use of electronic spotting.

Nancy Armour implores the league to “join the 21st century” in a USA Today column. “The NFL has desperately needed electronic spotting for years now,” she writes. “Now, after the AFC Championship turned on an egregious spot, the NFL has to make implementing it the top priority this off-season.” The league certainly has the money for it. “All it needs is the motive, and this game surely provided it.”

Johnnie Mae had suffered two recent losses, including that of her father, when she stood in front of friends and family and committed to the love of her life on Monday. But within the hour, her groom was dead, too. As Mae and new husband Toraze Davis of Omaha, Nebraska, left the church where they said “I do,” Davis suffered a blood clot that made his heart stop. “It happened within seconds ... just after the ceremony had begun,” friend Jewel Roberson said. Family and friends are now rallying behind Mae, director of ECO Supportive Living, which assists the elderly and those with disabilities. “Johnnie Mae has suffered through so much,” says Roberson. Now “she’s been widowed and married in a 10-minute span.”

“It’s seriously the saddest thing ever,” Tricia Pugsley said. She was supposed to DJ the couple’s wedding reception, but “they went to the hospital instead.” That’s where Mae “had to say goodbye to her new husband.”

“In my 24 years on television I have said the words MICROCHIP IN THE BALL a hundred times,” tweets ESPN analyst Tony Reali. “I do not understand how the greatest league in the world still has a guess method. Eye balling, from 30 yds away, trying to squint through a mass of humanity and walk in a straightish line to where it was, even when the other guy from the other sideline is somewhere else. Technology exists, technology works, tech would be fun!”

A GoFundMe page has raised more than $20,000 for Mae and the children the couple shared. Mae “always helps others; this is our time to help her,” the page reads. Some are finding solace in knowing that 48-year-old Davis died on what was evidently “the happiest day of his life,” a friend said. Another friend says she hopes the tragedy will teach others to care for themselves, including through annual

On the CBS broadcast, NFL rules analyst Gene Steratore said he thought Allen gained the first down “by about a third of the football,” and Jim Nantz and Tony Romo agreed.

Could one game lead to a rule change? A 2022 playoff game between the same two teams did just that, in regard to overtime.

Most other geysers seem to be fueled by shallower reserves; deeper equals warmer, so that could be a factor in Steamboat’s ability to propel water to heights of more than 300 feet. Michael Poland with the USGS earlier this year said it’s possible that increased snowfall in Yellowstone of late has led to more groundwater to fuel the geyser. What scientists are saying is that there’s no link between the increased activity and any potential looming eruption of Yellowstone’s supervolcano. “Yellowstone has an incredible geyser system that is unrelated to magmatic activity—other than the magmatic system basically providing heat,” tweeted one volcanologist. USA Today noted that the Waimangu Geyser in New Zealand has managed to shoot water taller than Steamboat has, but it’s been

Real Life Happy Gilmore Hears From Adam Sandler

Federal officials approved a new type of pain pill designed to eliminate the risks of addiction and overdose associated with opioid medications like Vicodin and OxyContin, the AP reports. The US Food and Drug Administration said it approved Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ Journavx for short-term pain that often follows surgery or injuries. It’s the first new pharmaceutical approach to treating pain in more than 20 years, offering an alternative to both opioids and over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

But the medication’s modest effectiveness and lengthy development process underscore the challenges of finding new ways

For the record, his given name is Landon Gilmore. But the teenage Indiana golfer has been going by ”Happy Gilmore” since he was a little kid because he can hit the ball like the fictional player of that name in Adam Sandler’s 1996 movie, per the Indianapolis Star. Now, the two have connected in real life. After Gilmore announced his commitment to golf for Ball State University, Sandler took note on Twitter. ”Go get em Happy,” Sandler wrote. ”Pulling for you.” Replied

to manage pain. Studies in more than 870 patients with acute pain due to foot and abdominal surgeries showed Vertex’s drug provided more relief than a dummy pill but didn’t outperform a common opioidacetaminophen combination pill.

“It’s not a slam dunk on effectiveness,” said Michael Schuh of the Mayo Clinic, a pharmacist and pain medicine expert who was not involved in the research. “But it is a slam dunk in that it’s a very different pathway and mechanism of action. So, I think that shows a lot promise.”

and, yes, he enters tournaments under the moniker of Happy Gilmore. One key difference between reality and art: Gilmore doesn’t play hockey and can’t even skate. He has, however, mastered the unique hockey-style tee shot used by Sandler in the movie. ”It never fails,” he says of fellow junior circuit

Vertex began researching the drug in the 2000s, when overdoses were rocketing upward, principally driven by mass prescribing of opioid painkillers for common ailments like arthritis and back pain.

Billy Manzo Jr. Creates Pizza From The Heart

We all know these lyrics from Dean Martin’s classic love ballad; When the moon hits your eye, like a big-a pizza pie, that’s amore. The song permanently linked these three things; pizza, a popular staple food that people can’t seem to get enough of, the moon, that satellite orbiting our planet, which captivates us all, and love, an enduring elemental emotion that is uniquely definable to each individual. This is certainly not an all-inclusive top-three list, but it is irrefutable that people are drawn to each of these things.

When it comes to pizza, the average person eats 288 slices each year, with thirteen percent of the US population consuming pizza on any given day, which amounts to more than 40 million Americans biting into a slice of doughy heaven every single day.

But as much as people love eating pizza, Certified Master Pizzaiolo Billy Manzo, Jr. loves creating it even more. I used the word ‘creating’ intentionally, because Manzo

doesn’t just make pizza, like any artist, he creates it. Pizza is both a passion and an obsession for Manzo, and his ultimate creation, Chef Billy Manzo Pizza, is his latest masterpiece. Manzo confidently tells everyone that he has created the best frozen pizza in the world. He makes a great case for such a bold statement, but it didn’t come easy, as nothing worthwhile ever does.

Growing up in Providence in an ItalianArmenian family, the kitchen was the place everyone gathered to talk and socialize, and food was at the center of it all. Manzo fell in love with cooking at an early age, and he brought that home-kitchen approach to the frozen pizza he created in his name.

Manzo’s personal journey has taken him from his family’s kitchen in Providence, across the country to Las Vegas, and across the ocean to Italy. He has learned much along the way, perfecting his craft. He began by selling pizzas out of the back of a cigar

lounge that he owned on Federal Hill for 16 years. His pizza became so popular that Manzo and his wife, Christine, launched a wholesale company, selling pizza dough and pizza shells throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, in more than 200 locations.

After the birth of their daughter, Manzo decided to go in a different direction and opened a retail restaurant, Federal Hill Pizza, in Warren. Several years later, in 2015, Manzo purchased the iconic Castle Theater on Chalkstone Avenue. He wanted to bring the quality and tradition of his Warren location to the neighborhood where he grew up.

Manzo’s cooking has been featured on the Phantom Gourmet, as well as the Food Network. He is the first American to go to Italy to be certified as Master, and he is one of only two certified Master pizzaiolos in the United States.

Now, after several years in development, Manzo is proud to deliver a frozen pizza made with 100% authentic Italian ingredients, curated directly in Italy. Every aspect of this pizza is carefully sourced to reflect the true flavors of Italy, including the tomatoes and the dough, which is made with water from the Friuli Dolomites. Manzo says that his pizza is the only frozen pizza using Galbani, Italy’s number one cheese, as reflected on the front of the pizza box.

This is a pizza crafted with love, and you can find Chef Billy Manzo Pizza in local shops and in supermarkets throughout the state.

Unveiling the Blueprint for Your Timeless Transformation in the New Year!

Greetings to the distinguished 40+, 50+, and 60+ crowd in the Rhode Island and Boston area, those whose aspirations for the New Year transcend the ordinary. As we embark on another chapter of self-improvement, let’s carve a unique path tailored for those individuals who want to change, and need to change, for their health, their family, and themselves. Congrats that you are thinking about changing, for that is the first step. “INTENTION BUILDS ATTENTION!”

Embarking on a fitness journey is commendable, but let’s not overlook the critical components essential for sustained well-being. Achieving lasting fitness isn’t about mere fluctuations; it’s about a perpetual state of vitality and health. Wouldn’t you agree?

A few years back, a study underscored a significant point – those who shed weight typically regain it within seven years. Astonishingly, 93% return to weight loss programs, creating a perpetual cycle. Now, imagine a fitness regimen designed for longterm success, aligning seamlessly with your affluent lifestyle.

The burning question emerges: “Coach Kearns, how do I achieve enduring results? What should my fitness program entail?”

Firstly, let’s establish that your program must be effective, efficient, and, above all, safe for you. Tailoring it to your unique needs is paramount. If, for instance, you haven’t lifted weights in decades, but aspire to shed 40 lbs, hurling weights recklessly isn’t the answer. At Burn with Kearns, we advocate for building the basement – laying a strong foundation through a safe and scientific approach, ensuring your fitness journey endures.

Let’s delve into building the basement. The core, often oversimplified, is a complex ensemble of muscles. Picture a line from your right shoulder to left hip and its reverse

on the other side. This encompasses the abdominals, lower back, rib cage muscles, gluteal muscles, and scapular muscles. It’s not just about crunches; it’s about a holistic approach. Think of it as investing $5000 in the foundation, before spending $100,000 on the roof. Without a robust core, you can’t throw a punch, swing a golf club, or even take a step confidently.

Introducing our exclusive “Core Killer” – a set of exercises used by 15 UFC fighters, NFL athletes, NBA athletes, college hockey, and even actors like Kevin James. If it works for them, it will work for you! These drills, adaptable to weight plates, medicine balls, dumbbells, or even a patio brick, target not just your abs, but also crucial stabilizers and neutralizers. You won’t feel the burn like traditional crunches, but you’ll experience a holistic engagement vital for everyday life.

Allow me to share a real-life testament to the power of core strength. Twelve weeks before a crucial fight, UFC fighter Kenny Florian faced a potential career-ending back injury. Thanks to a robust core built over 18 months, he not only recovered, but triumphed in the ring. The transverse plane of motion, often overlooked in conventional workouts, played a pivotal role in preventing injuries and ensuring his victory.

As we venture into the new year, I’ll be your guide in a series of articles, unlocking the missing pieces to elevate and perpetuate your fitness journey. Why, you ask? Because it’s my mission to assist individuals like yourself in achieving and sustaining the best shape of your life.

Stay relentless, Be relentless in the design of your life!

Sticking to Your Health and Fitness Goals Through February: How to Stay on Track

can overshadow fitness priorities.

4. Winter blues: Cold, dark days can sap energy and make it harder to stay active.

Tips for Staying Committed Through February and Beyond

January is often synonymous with fresh starts and ambitious resolutions, especially when it comes to health and fitness. Gyms are packed, meal prep is in full swing, and there’s a collective buzz of motivation. However, as February rolls around, many people find their enthusiasm waning. Research shows that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by the second week of February, leaving countless individuals discouraged and reverting to old habits.

So, why does February feel like a tipping point, and how can you ensure your health and fitness goals stay on track? Let’s dive in.

Why

Sticking to Your Goals Matters

Health and fitness resolutions go beyond weight loss or physical appearance—they’re about creating sustainable habits that improve your overall well-being. Sticking with these goals:

• Boosts mental health: Regular exercise and healthy eating reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

• Improves physical health: Consistent habits can lower the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

• Builds self-confidence: Achieving your goals reinforces your belief in your ability to overcome challenges.

• Sets an example for others: Your commitment can inspire friends and family to prioritize their health too.

When you quit prematurely, you lose the opportunity to reap these long-term benefits, and risk reinforcing a cycle of starting over, year after year.

Why February Is a Challenge

February is a crossroads for many people for several reasons:

1. Motivation fades: The excitement of a new goal often wears off, leaving you with the hard work of building discipline.

2. Unrealistic expectations: Many people set lofty goals without a clear plan, leading to frustration when progress feels slow.

3. Life gets busy: Work, family, and other commitments

1. Revisit Your “Why”

Remind yourself why you set your goals in the first place. Is it to have more energy for your kids? To feel stronger and more confident? Keep that purpose front and center.

2. Set Smaller, Realistic Goals

Break your larger goal into smaller, achievable milestones. For example, instead of “lose 20 pounds,” aim to lose 2-3 pounds per month. Celebrate each small win to keep motivation high.

3. Plan and Track Your Progress

Consistency thrives on structure. Schedule workouts like appointments and prep meals in advance. Use a journal or app to track your progress, which can help you stay accountable.

4. Find an Accountability Partner

Whether it’s a friend, family member, or personal trainer, having someone to share your journey with can provide motivation and support.

5. Focus on Enjoyable Activities

If you dread your workouts, you’re less likely to stick with them. Find activities you enjoy, whether it’s dancing, swimming, or hiking, and make them part of your routine.

6. Practice Self-Compassion

Slip-ups are inevitable, but they don’t have to derail your progress. Instead of beating yourself up, treat yourself with kindness and get back on track.

7. Adjust as Needed

Life changes, and your plan may need to change too. Be flexible and willing to adapt your approach while staying true to your overall goal.

8. Visualize Your Success

Picture how you’ll feel in six months, if you stay consistent. Use that vision to fuel your determination.

The Ripple Effect

Sticking to your health and fitness goals through February doesn’t just impact your physical appearance; it transforms your mindset, confidence, and lifestyle. Every step forward— no matter how small—brings you closer to lasting change.

February doesn’t have to be the end of your resolution journey. With intentional effort and the right strategies, it can be the month where you prove to yourself that you’re capable of more than a fleeting burst of motivation. Let this year be the one where your goals outlast the resolutions trend—and truly become a way of life.

Another Great Splash Into the New Year for A Wish Come True

Two“Wish Kids”among those getting a lifetime dream adventure.

The first day of the new year was joyous and festive for many. For thousands of people, they took the first step toward helping others fighting life-threatening illnesses.

Easton’s Beach in Newport provided the backdrop for A Wish Come True, the oldest wish-granting organization in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and its 21st Annual Polar Plunge. Some 5,000 attendees braved the cold Atlantic Ocean, to not only be “Freezin’ for a Reason,” but to also raise funds and awareness for its mission to help children, ages 3-18, who are battling life-threatening illnesses. The organization has raised more than $73,000, initially, to continue its support of families having to deal with this difficult issue.

Executive Director Mary-Kate O’Leary said that the event has been a mainstay for the past several years. She cited the community for its continuing support of their efforts. Many local businesses also sponsored the event, along with individual donations and outreach.

O’Leary remains hopeful that events such as this one will further their reach and get more people involved.

“Right at noon, the sun began to shine on all of us,” said O’Leary, who has been a staple at the Plunge for several years. “The outpouring of support is amazing, especially when we have the business community and the public coming out to help these brave children. There are a lot of people here showing up to get into

the ocean to help the cause. We are grateful to everyone who came out to help.”

RI Laborers District Council/LIUNA served as the event’s presenting sponsor. They were so excited for the turnout and participation. “This is truly what it is all about. We are proud to support such a great organization and cause,” stated Arthur Jordan, RI Laborers Council Business Manager.

This event featured two “Wish Kids,” who will be going on a magical vacation to Florida, with their families. Lars Reiff is a nine-year-old boy from Jamestown who wants to play and do things other boys and girls his age often do. However, he suffered a stroke that changed his and his family’s lives. Lars has been improving, with treatment and care.

Lars’s father said that the family is so thankful for the outpouring of support from A Wish Come True, and for giving Lars and his family something to look forward to.

“Lars has been a trooper since his journey began,” he said. “He is all smiles and looks forward to growing up and making a difference. Mary-Kate and her staff have been phenomenal in making this ordeal as smooth a process as possible.”

Indy Littlefield, age four, lives in Coventry, and is a young girl who was diagnosed with cancer at age three. She went through several procedures to remove a brain tumor. Within months, Indy was rushed to the ICU to deal with a stroke and three blood clots in her brain. She survived that scare, but faces a long road to recovery.

Indy’s dad, Adam Littlefield, said that the ordeal has made both Indy and her family much stronger.

“There are very few things in life that are forever special and forever sacred, forever special is fatherhood and family, what’s forever sacred is a brotherhood, it’s an unbreakable bond between friends, colleagues, and family, those you can call upon in the darkest hours or the brightest minutes…to walk into the gates of Hell

together, or into the coldest elements. Today, I experienced both, in one of the most memorable and magical moments of my life. I am forever grateful for the ones who stand by me, day or night, good or bad.” Mr. Littlefield is a member of Local #1033. “Watching my brotherhood in the union support our family is truly inspiring.”

Indy looks forward to her trip to Florida, where she and her family will visit Disney. Indy looks forward to meeting Elsa from “Frozen.”

The Best Foods for Weight Loss

I did a lot of research on this subject because we all know what they say - today will be contradicted tomorrow. With that, and knowing what I eat to stay healthy, this article is about, what I believe, are the best foods to help with weight loss.

Eggs - Once considered bad, eggs are now considered one of the best foods to eat. They are incredibly nutrient-dense and high in protein and good fat, which help you feel full. In a 2020 study that included 50 people who were overweight or had obesity, it was found that eating eggs and whole grain toast for breakfast, instead of cereal, milk, and orange juice, increased feelings of fullness.

Greens - Leafy greens, such as kale, spinach, and collard greens are packed with fiber and nutrients that can help keep you feel satisfied and hydrated. Leafy greens contain thylakoids, which are plant compounds that leave you feeling full. The leafy greens are also loaded with nutrients.

Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, are high in fiber and are incredibly filling. These vegetables are great to include in your diet if you want to lose weight because they

are high in fiber and low in calories.

Fish is loaded with high quality protein, healthy fats, and other important nutrients. That combination keeps you feeling full, and fish is great for managing your weight. Most, if not all seafood, supplies a significant amount of iodine, which is necessary for maintaining thyroid function and metabolism. This is one of my top five foods for weight loss and overall health.

Chicken and other meats - Chicken breast and other lean meats, such as tenderloin and flank steak pack protein and iron, and have less saturated fat than other cuts of meat. All of these qualities make them great options to support weight management. Red meat should be eaten in moderation.

Cooking methods - Opt for healthier cooking methods, such as baking, roasting, grilling, or sautéing. This will help prevent any negative health effects. Again, these meats are also a great way to get your iron.

Beans and other legumes, such as lentils, black beans, and kidney beans, can be beneficial for

weight loss. These foods tend to be high in protein and fiber. Beans are also great for making you feel full.

Soups - A 2007 study notes that incorporating a vegetable-based clear soup before your meal can also be a way to feel fuller and eat less, overall, which may promote weight loss. Broth-based or tomato-based soups are better for weight management. Avoid creamy or cheesy soups. These are loaded with calories and fat.

Avocados - Not only are avocados rich in hearthealthy fats, but they also have a lot of water and fiber, which make them very filling. Additionally, they help your body absorb important fat-soluble vitamins. They also contain many important nutrients, including potassium, which is important for managing blood pressure and promoting heart health. Avocados are one of those foods we consider a “good” fat.

Nuts - Nuts are high in heart-healthy unsaturated fat, and provide a good source of protein, fiber, and other plant compounds that benefit heart health. Studies have shown eating nuts can help improve metabolic health and even promote weight loss. But as with any high fat food, it’s a good idea to be mindful of portion sizes when eating nuts, and to stick to the recommended serving size of 1 ounce.

Whole grains - Recent studies indicate that a diet rich in whole grains can help support weight loss much more than refined grains. That’s because they’re loaded with fiber and contain a decent amount of protein. The best whole grains are oats, brown rice, and quinoa.

Fruit - Most fruits have properties that make them great for helping you reach or maintain a moderate weight. Even though fruits contain sugar, it is natural sugar, and they’re low in calories and loaded with nutrients. Plus, their fiber content helps prevent sugar from being released too quickly into your bloodstream.

Greek yogurt - Greek yogurt is great for weight management. Certain types of yogurt contain beneficial live and active probiotic bacteria cultures that can help improve your gut function. Consider choosing full fat yogurt. If you are adding nuts

and seeds, you may want to opt for the lower fat yogurts, because the nuts and seeds add plenty of healthy fats.

I am going to contradict myself because I do believe you should always opt for the full fat of any food. The low fat and sugar free foods are usually substituted with ingredients that can be harmful. I believe that it is always best to have the real thing, just less of it.

“I can’t control everything in my life, but I can control what I put in my body.”
This is a choice we can make and do make.
“What you eat for your inside, is what you wear on your outside.”

JIM VINCENT LOCAL PROFILE

Legendary is what most people would call Mr. James (Jim) Vincent. From his youth, Mr. Vincent has sought to correct injustice. Yet, his style was never brazen but, diplomatically, sophisticated.

Starting with growing up in Boston’s South End neighborhood, which was impacted by urban renewal efforts in the 1960s. This sparked his interest in government and urban planning, leading him to study government and city planning in college. He began his career at the Boston Redevelopment Authority, the same entity that had impacted his family, and went on to work in housing and community development roles in Boston and Rhode Island, including serving as president of the Urban League of Rhode Island and the NAACP Providence branch.

James discussed his transition from housing to working at the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA), first as a civil rights officer and then as a community outreach officer. He explained that this move was due to changes and layoffs at Rhode Island Housing during the foreclosure crisis and that RIPTA was interested in his civil rights expertise.

When asked what advice he would give to someone interested in working in civil rights today, James recommended partnering with organizations like the Black Lives Matter PAC, the Economic Progress Institute, and Kids Count. He suggested volunteering, serving on boards or committees, and reaching out to experienced civil rights leaders like himself to get advice and guidance.

His business specializes in installing, maintaining, and repairing boilers, heaters, and providing other services throughout Rhode Island.

Patrick started his company last April, with his wife, Nicole, after spending over a decade in the HVAC industry. He wanted the company to deliver solid craftsmanship, with excellent customer service— something he believes is lacking, with many within the industry.

“I am a no-nonsense, tell-it-to-you straight type of person,” Patrick said. “I will tell you what you need and not upcharge you with equipment you don’t need. My goal is for my customers to feel comfortable with me, and to understand the options they have.”

With winter in full swing, Patrick is working during his busiest time. In a given month, he takes on between 20 and 30 service calls. “People should be looking for any signs of problems in the warmer months, before it becomes a bigger issue now,” he said.

Patrick said that most people discover their heat doesn’t turn on for several reasons. If it doesn’t click immediately, the pipes make noises, some rooms don’t receive heat, or anything other problem occurs, he suggests calling them to schedule an appointment.

As they are active and caring about the community, Patrick recently helped a veteran, through Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, have heat in their home for the holidays. They also help out at local animal shelters, when needed.

As for joining The Dream Team, Patrick said sending Nicole to the meetings helps expand their reach, while leaning on them to help grow their business.

“The group makes us become more socially involved with others,” Patrick explained.

How to Make a Financial Comeback

Many Americans at one point or another will deal with an unexpected event that has financial implications. As a financial advisor, I’ve helped many families overcome these setbacks and go onto achieve their biggest financial goals. Most often, setbacks occur because of circumstances beyond one’s control, such as a job layoff, a car accident, natural disasters, a house fire or the onset of an illness. If you find yourself facing a similar unexpected situation, here are five steps to help you regain your financial footing and confidence:

Give yourself permission to dip into your emergency fund.

It can be mentally difficult to spend your hard-earned savings paying off unexpected bills. If you find yourself in this position, remind yourself that the point of having money set aside is to handle unplanned costs with as minimal impact to your usual spending as possible.

Craft a financial strategy to combat the expenses.

If the costs are more than your emergency fund can cover, take the time to plan out how to address them. Your strategy may include:

Insurance.

If your situation involves an expense covered by insurance, contact your provider as soon as you can to start the claims process. If you’re unsure of whether an expense is covered by your policy, ask. Document key details of the situation and remember to keep all receipts.

If you have savings separate from your emergency fund, consider withdrawing from these sources. While it’s likely you have the money earmarked for a different type of goal (e.g. a second home, a new boat), it may be more important to take care of the unexpected expenses today. Whatever you do, try to avoid withdrawing from your retirement or college savings accounts. You may incur a penalty for using the money for non-qualified expenses and you would miss out on the chance to continue compounding your savings over time.

Adjust your spending.

Depending on your situation, you can either rework your budget or simply be more mindful of your spending in the near term. If you’re living with a spouse or partner, have a conversation to help set financial priorities over the next few weeks or months. Open communication can help you work together to address the unplanned expenses and get back on track.

Seek professional help.

If you’re unsure which investments to draw down or want a second opinion on the tradeoffs between using various sources of income, consult a financial advisor.

Prepare for next time.

Once you’ve addressed the situation at hand, commit to restoring your financial foundation for the next inevitable unexpected event. Replenish your cash reserve and create a plan to rebuild any withdrawn investment savings. Review your insurance coverage to make sure you have adequate protection and understand what expenses may be covered and where you may have gaps.

Smart Strategies for Managing a Windfall

If a financial windfall is in your future, when the day comes, you’ll have decisions to make. A large infusion of cash is generally welcome news, but it can come with challenges and complexity.

Here are some things to consider when your financial circumstances change for the better overnight.

Don’t make any sudden decisions. Whether you’ve been enriched by an inheritance, a boom in business, the lottery, or something else, take your time before making big decisions you may later regret. For example, don’t quit your job or make large purchases without thinking through the consequences and looking at the big picture. Instead, study your options so you can feel confident about your next steps.

Build your emergency fund. Your windfall is an opportunity to shore up financial security. For that reason, a portion of your new-found wealth belongs in an emergency fund, particularly if yours has been underfunded. Experts recommend setting aside six months to one year of expenses to prepare for a downturn in financial circumstances. Hold this money in an account that’s liquid so you can readily access it. And, keep emergency funds separate from your regular checking account to avoid the temptation to dip into them.

Tackle debt. Debt is often the greatest threat to financial stability. If you’ve racked up unpaid balances, your windfall represents a great opportunity to reduce or eliminate them. The first order of business is to pay down your credit card or other high-interest debt. Doing so can drastically reduce your monthly expenses and improve your credit score in the process. Paying down low-interest mortgage debt may not be as high a priority, especially if you can offset mortgage interest with investment gains.

Invest in your future. Put your windfall to work to create financial stability now and in the future. Fund your retirement plan with a balanced portfolio aligned to your risk tolerance and time horizon. Diversify your holdings with a range of stocks and bonds. You might also consider alternative tangible assets such as property.

Plan your estate. A sudden windfall is a reminder that life can change in a heartbeat. Take this opportunity to create or update your will. Assign beneficiaries to your assets, including your life insurance policy. Consider creating a trust to pass your wealth to the next generation.

Spend wisely. Don’t let your good fortune cloud your judgment. Be discerning in your expenditures. A large infusion of cash may permit you to make long-desired purchases, change careers, or help family and friends, but perhaps not all at once. Ideally you will continue to maintain a household budget to prevent overspending.

Share your good fortune. If your changed financial status allows it, be generous with the people and organizations you care about. Philanthropy and charitable deeds contribute to health and wellbeing while also strengthening communities.

Talk to a tax professional. Unexpected cash can affect your tax bill. There may be strategies you can employ to lessen your tax liability. For example, you may be able to fund an individual retirement account (IRA) or a health savings account (HSA) to reduce taxable income for the year. Make sure you’re taking advantage of available deductions and credits that lower your tax bill.

Get guidance from a financial advisor. An experienced financial professional can help you in the happy circumstance of a financial windfall. Consult an advisor for advice on how to manage your good fortune for optimal results.

Brunch with Santa

Brings Christmas Magic to Johnston

The holiday spirit radiated throughout Johnston, as more than 500 families from Johnston, Warwick, Cranston, North Providence, and Smithfield, came together for the Johnston Senior Provider Collaboration Committee’s (JSPCC) annual “Brunch with Santa.” Held at the Johnston Senior Center, the event offered a day of festive cheer, community connection, and unforgettable holiday memories.

A Celebration of Community and Christmas

From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was imbued with joy and magic. A talented Brass Quartet welcomed attendees with the sound of classic Christmas carols, setting the tone for a day filled with holiday spirit. Inside, children delighted in arts and crafts stations that allowed them to express their creativity, while families gathered to share a warm and delicious meal donated by local partners.

The highlight of the day was Santa Claus himself. Families enjoyed professional complementary photos with Santa by Jenn Lombari Photography, capturing memories to cherish for years to come. Each child received a special gift, and Mrs. Claus added her own sweet touch by baking chocolate chip cookies, ensuring that every young guest left with a smile. Guests also had the privilege of special guest appearances by the Grinch and Dominic the Donkey.

Heartfelt Testimonials From the Community

The event left a profound impact on the families who attended.

Amanda Harrison, a mother of two, praised the initiative, saying, “I loved that this event was created. My kids had so much fun, and I’m so grateful the pictures with Santa were free. During these hard times, the mall prices are just horrendous.”

Katie Scorpio, a mother of three, expressed her gratitude: “I’m so glad there is an organization that did this for the children. It brought the true magic of Christmas to Johnston.”

Lorie DeCarlo, a mother of four, shared how the event made a difference for her family: “Having just given birth to my fourth child, this Christmas has been financially difficult for us. I’m so grateful for the work the JSPCC put together. The complementary pictures with Santa really helped us out.”

Sponsors and Volunteers Make It Happen

The success of Brunch with Santa was made possible by the collaborative efforts of JSPCC’s core sponsors: These four healthcare communities, led by Maurizio Marchese of Morgan Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Michael Mangasarian of The Bridge at Cherry Hill, Loraine DiLorenzo of Cherry Hill Manor Nursing

and Rehab Center, and Jennifer Cardullo Burns of Anchor Bay at Pocasset, worked tirelessly to bring the community together and make the event a reality. Their dedication and commitment ensured a memorable experience for all who attended. This event would not have been possible without.

Rhode Island Romance Writers Spice up the Month

Romance novels are the highest-earning fiction genre, with annual sales doubling in the past four years. What makes this even more remarkable is that the popularity of romance novels is growing at a time when overall book sales are on a sharp decline. Previously regarded as a guilty pleasure, romance novels are enjoying a more prominent position of status in the literary world, fueled by a new generation of romance writers and avid readers of the genre. Social media certainly played a large part in the acceptance of romance novels into the mainstream by establishing a direct connection between author and reader, as well as between the readers themselves.

No longer regarded as a niche market, these days you’re likely to find the top spots on the New York Times bestseller fiction list occupied by romance novels. Authors like Sarah Maas are recognizable, even to those who might not have read her books, or any other romance novels, for that matter.

With February being the unofficial romance month, and Valentine’s Day falling smack dab in the middle, it may not be surprising to learn that romance novels of all formats are in high demand, with sales peaking in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.

Rhode Island is represented by its share of talented romance writers, with a long list of titles to consider. With a broad range of romance subgenres that include historical, suspense, paranormal, military, romantic comedy, as well as contemporary, there is something for all readers. As an author myself, supporting local writers is something I strongly encourage. To begin a search for a romance book that is right for you, while at the same time supporting local

writers, I suggest logging into the Rhode Island Romance Writers (RIRW) website. This site not only lists the Rhode Island authors who belong to the organization and promotes the titles they have in print, they also help their authors to become published and build their careers in the writing field. Originally a chapter of the Romance Writers of America, RIRW has since disaffiliated, and is now an independent, nonprofit organization.

You will find more than thirty authors on the site, with links to personal websites and complete book listings. You won’t be disappointed by the variety and quality of the work of each of these authors, from the books by beginning writers whose names you may not have heard before to the newest releases by more well-established novelists, like Heidi McLaughlin, a New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today Bestselling author. Her first novel, Forever My Girl, was adapted into a 2018 movie.

Jo Ann Brown Ferguson is another best-selling Rhode Island author. She has written more than 130 books, and has also established the first romance writing course at Brown University.

To learn more about Heidi and Jo Ann, or to find the perfect romance book for you by a local novelist, visit Rhode Island Romance Writers at RIRW.org.

Sweeten Your Relationship With the Perfect Plan on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is that one day of the year when couples should take the opportunity to put extra effort into planning something that perfectly expresses the love and affection you have for each other. If you are in a relationship, no matter for how long, making it special is the key to making it successful.

One of the first important things to do is to disconnect from your phone, the social media sites, and put together one or more of the following ideas to express what you may not typically do during the rest of the year.

When you’re in a relationship with someone you really love, there is no one that knows that person more deeply than you. Use this fact to your advantage by tailoring your plan to be something they will remember forever.

Type out 100 reasons why you love that special person. Okay, 100 may be alot, but I guarantee that everything you add will be appreciated. This is a significant gesture to let them know you do not take them for granted.

Write a storybook about your relationship. Make it loving, funny, and memorable. Check out some websites for ideas. This is something that you can add to every year and will be a constant expression of your love, dedication, and private thoughts about your innermost feelings.

Candy and flowers are a traditional idea for a Valentine’s Day gift, and there are those old fashioned girls who just have to have them as a symbol of your love. Flowers are a loving gesture, especially if you don’t send them regularly.

Another great idea is to book a weekend getaway for you and your partner. There’s nothing more romantic than getting away from the rest of the world, while you and your honey share every waking moment together-make this a tradition that will become something you both look forward to each year.

Let’s face it, no woman will be disappointed if you present her with a beautiful piece of jewelry. Take this romantic day to spoil her-because that’s exactly what she deserves! Here’s a tip: In RI, you will find that perfect, dazzling piece you’re seeking at

Anthony’s Jewelers on 1525 Mineral Spring Avenue in North Providence. I promise that she will love whatever you choose.

How about a quiet night away from the kids spent at a romantic restaurant? To top it off, find a babysitter and surprise your partner by booking a hotel, and end your meal with the most memorable dessert you can share.

Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday in 2025, so you can take the entire weekend to show your partner how much you love them by planning a long weekend where you spend the entire time in bed, watching movies, ordering take out, and paying attention to only each other.

For those who do not live together and are in the “steamy” stage of your relationship, go to your honey’s place and make their bedroom into a “love nest.” Go all out and WOW them with rose petals, perfume, and chocolate covered strawberries.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to be creative when expressing your love. In any loving relationship, it really is the “thought that counts.”

No Valentine’s Day is complete without a card. If you are not the creative type, there are ones you can purchase with words that you want to tell your loved one. For women especially, cards have more meaning than imaginable. The key is to be sure that the words fit how you truly feel. If you give your partner a funny Valentine’s Day card, be sure to pair it with one that is more romantic and endearing,

Throughout the busy year, it’s easy to let time go by without stopping to show your partner how you feel about them. Life’s activities seem to always get in the way, especially in relationships where children are involved. If you have someone that always puts you first, don’t let Valentine’s Day pass without finding some extra special way to express your appreciation and love.

Toyota of Smithfield Loves Your Trade Ins

Located between Lincoln Mall and Bryant University near the Lincoln/Smithfield line, Toyota of Smithfield has new and certified, pre-owned vehicles, ready to either lease or own.

Regardless of what type of vehicle you desire, their knowledgeable staff will ensure that your car purchase happens smoothly.

General Manager John Durrani recommends that anyone looking for their next vehicle should call their award-winning Sales Department, to discover dealer incentives.

“Anyone trading in either their used or certified, pre-owned cars, will receive an additional $1,000 over book value,” Durrani said. “There won’t be a better time for anyone to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more now than it will ever be worth.”

For those who already either own or lease their vehicle, customers are encouraged to visit their award-winning Service Department, to keep their vehicles motoring. Their staff can diagnose smaller problems, before they become more expensive ones.

With smaller-than-normal inventory, Durrani invites customers to bring in their used cars. He said that there are several Toyota incentives to move someone from their older car into a newer one.

“We want the public to drive in with their used vehicles. Right now, we need more inventory to fulfill orders,” Durrani said.

To help facilitate their need for additional certified, pre-owned vehicles, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of its book value for any used cars. It doesn’t matter whether or not the customer plans on buying from them.

“We will purchase your trade-in, even if you don’t buy a vehicle from us,” he added.

The dealership holds a monthly private sale. This month’s event is scheduled for Friday, February 21, and Saturday, February 22, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, by appointment only. Attendees will have access to their inventory. Managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives.

The Dealership’s Peace of Mind Purchase Process means no hassles over pricing, trade-in values, cash back and rebate incentives offered up front, and the best available leasing and financing terms also offered up front. Durrani said that this is just part of the all-around, customer-driven experience he implemented to ensure the process does not get bogged down in miscommunication.

What Is A Flying Squirrel?

My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www. LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. Recently, I had a colleague of mine have a ‘heckuva’ time identifying a specific noise in his attic that was preventing him from a good night’s sleep. He had a number of pest control folks come by the house to take their crack at finding the culprit.

It did not seem to be any of the usual suspects (bat, mouse, or typical gray squirrel), but what in Mother Nature could it possibly be? After a frustrating spat of time and in a happenstance connection with a specific type of expert, my friend had his answer – a ‘flying squirrel!’

Flying squirrels are small mammals known for their ability to glide from tree to tree. Despite their name, they don’t actually fly like birds or bats. Instead, they use a special membrane called a patagium, which stretches from their wrists to their ankles, to glide through the air. These nocturnal creatures are active at night, and can easily adapt to living near humans, sometimes making their way into attics or walls. While they may seem cute, flying squirrels can cause significant problems if they take up residence in your home.

It’s not always easy identifying the noise you hear in your attic, as flying squirrels can be tricky.

Flying squirrels are small, weighing only a few ounces, and measuring around 9-14 inches long, including their tail. They are highly social and can often live in colonies of 20 or more. Unlike their daytime relatives, gray squirrels, flying squirrels are nocturnal, meaning they’re most active at night. This behavior is a big reason why they can be hard to identify – not to mention, be so annoying when you are trying to sleep!

Flying squirrels are excellent climbers and can squeeze through tiny gaps—sometimes, as small as a dime. This makes it easy for them to access your attic or walls, without you noticing. Once inside, they may build nests using insulation, leaves, or other materials. Their constant movement at night can lead to scratching, scurrying, or chewing noises, but because they are so small, these sounds can be subtle and hard to pinpoint.

Flying squirrels are nocturnal, the sounds they make typically occur when you’re asleep. You may hear faint scratching, rustling, or scampering sounds, but these noises can be mistaken for other animals, like mice or rats. If you’re not awake or alert during their peak activity hours, you might not notice them at all.

The signs of flying squirrels in an attic (if they are even able to be noticed!) — like gnawed wires, droppings, or nests — can look very similar to those left by other pests. People often confuse flying squirrels with mice, rats, or bats, because of their small size and nocturnal habits.

Flying squirrels often nest in hard-to-reach places, such as between walls, in insulation, or in tiny crevices. These hiding

spots make it challenging to confirm their presence, without a thorough inspection. Even if you investigate, you might not see them because they’re excellent at staying out of sight.

Flying squirrels are most likely to enter homes during the fall and winter months, when seeking a warm, safe place to live. Since other animals, like mice, also seek shelter during this time, it’s easy to misidentify the source of the noise.

How to Diagnose Flying Squirrels in Your Attic

If you suspect flying squirrels are in your attic, here are some clues to look for:

Droppings: Flying squirrel droppings are small, oval-shaped, and similar to those of mice. Finding them near insulation or corners of the attic can be a sign.

Noises at Night: Pay attention to consistent scratching or scampering sounds after sunset.

Chewing Damage: Look for gnawed wires, wood, or other materials.

Access Points: Check for small openings around your roofline, soffits, or vents. Flying squirrels can enter through tiny gaps.

Gliding Sightings: If you have tall trees near your home, you might see them gliding at dusk or dawn.

To confirm their presence, you may need to set up cameras, or consult a professional wildlife control expert, who is familiar with flying squirrels (such as the one my friend happened to come across). They have the experience and tools to identify and remove flying squirrels safely.

While their nocturnal habits, small size, and quiet nature make them hard to identify as the source of attic noises, acting quickly to address the problem can help prevent further damage to your home, and better ensure these creatures are safely relocated back to the wild.

Displaying Organizational Excellence in February

February is the ideal month to foster a culture of authentic appreciation. Organizational Excellence and its four pillars, not only uplift employees, but also serve as a powerful tool for achieving organizational success. At Make A Difference Consulting, we believe the four pillars of Organizational Excellence are: Neuroleadership, Neuromanagement, Authentic Appreciation, and Workplace Forgiveness. With these pillars, organizations can create environments where appreciation thrives and everyone feels empowered to contribute their best. Let’s focus on the four pillars of Organizational Excellence individually, and how organizations can best employ these pillars during February.

The Pillar of Neuroleadership

Neuroleadership, rooted in neuroscience, offers insights into how the brain influences decision-making, emotional regulation, and social interactions. When applied to the workplace, it reveals why authentic acknowledgment of employee contributions is vital.

The brain’s reward system, particularly the release of dopamine, plays a significant role. When employees receive authentic appreciation, it activates this system, fostering feelings of happiness and motivation. Moreover, authentic acknowledgment helps reduce cortisol levels, alleviating stress and creating a more positive work environment.

Key Strategies include:

Recognizing individual strengths: Understand what each employee brings to the table and acknowledge their unique contributions.

Tailoring communication: Use language that resonates with the individual’s values and preferred style of recognition.

Being specific: Replace vague compliments with clear, detailed acknowledgments. For example, instead of saying, “Great work,” say, the specific action and how the specific action benefitted the team and company, while expressing authentic appreciation.

The Pillar of Neuromanagement

Neuromanagement integrates neuroscience with management practices to design systems that align with how the brain functions, optimally. To sustain authentic appreciation in the workplace, leaders must go beyond occasional gestures and embed recognition into the organizational framework.

Build a Culture of Psychological Safety:

Authentic Appreciation flourishes in environments, where employees feel safe to express themselves, without fear of judgment. By promoting openness, leaders encourage employees to share their successes, challenges, and ideas.

Use Technology Mindfully: Recognition platforms, when used thoughtfully, can amplify authentic appreciation. These tools allow for real-time acknowledgment, and foster a culture of positivity. However, the human element should never be overlooked, personal messages and face-to-face interactions remain irreplaceable.

Train Leaders in Emotional Intelligence:

Managers who understand the emotional needs of their team can deliver more meaningful authentic appreciation. Emotional intelligence (EQ) training equips leaders with the tools to connect authentically, navigate conflicts, and build trust.

The Pillar of Workplace Forgiveness

Holding onto grievances or unresolved conflicts creates barriers to genuine connection and recognition. Alternatively, fostering a culture of forgiveness allows

employees to move past mistakes and focus on collective growth.

Why Forgiveness Matters:

It reduces stress and tension, improving overall workplace harmony.

It fosters trust and accountability, essential components of a high-performing team.

It encourages risk-taking and innovation, as employees feel safe to make mistakes and learn from them.

Incorporating Forgiveness Into the Workplace:

Model Forgiveness at the Leadership Level: Leaders must set the example by addressing conflicts with empathy and a solution-focused mindset.

Encourage Open Communication: Provide forums for employees to voice concerns and resolve misunderstandings constructively.

Focus on Growth: When addressing mistakes, shift the narrative from blame to learning. Highlight the lessons gained and celebrate the effort to improve.

The 4 Pillars of Organizational Excellence in Action

Monthly Recognition Events: Organize events where team members share stories of collaboration, success, and resilience. This reinforces a culture of appreciation while creating opportunities for forgiveness and healing.

The ASK Principle: Use the ASK principle: Ask, Seek, Knock, as a guide for fostering authentic relationships. Ask employees about their needs, seek opportunities to uplift them, and knock on doors that open pathways for their growth.

Mindful Appreciation Practices: Train managers to be mindful in their expressions of gratitude. Encourage practices like handwritten notes, personalized check-ins, and thoughtful gestures that align with individual preferences.

Regular Neuroscience-Inspired Training: Host workshops on neuroleadership and neuromanagement to help employees and leaders understand how the brain responds to appreciation and forgiveness. Equip them with tools to harness

these principles effectively. Make A Difference Consulting offers The Executive Group Coaching. Enrolling Professionals on February 20, 2025.

Celebrate Progress Over Perfection: Acknowledging incremental progress fosters a growth mindset and inspires employees to keep striving for excellence. This approach also reinforces forgiveness by emphasizing effort over errors.

The ROI of Organizational Investing in The 4 Pillars of Organizational Excellence yields measurable benefits:

Increased Employee Engagement: Employees who feel valued are more likely to be engaged and committed to their work.

Higher Retention Rates: Appreciation fosters loyalty, reducing turnover and the associated costs.

Enhanced Productivity: When employees feel supported and acknowledged, they are more motivated to perform at their best.

This February, let’s make Organizational Excellence and The 4 Pillars of Organizational Excellence a cornerstone of organizational culture. By leveraging insights from neuroscience, practicing effective management strategies, and fostering workplace forgiveness, organizations can create environments where employees thrive.

At Make A Difference Consulting, we specialize in helping organizations cultivate cultures of appreciation that drive excellence. Let’s work together to ensure your workplace not only celebrates love this month but also sustains it throughout the year.

Cold Enough For Ya?

“Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.”
- Mark Twain.

Recently, I was at a local gas station on a morning when the temperature was a bit balmy - for Siberia - when I overheard one man say to another, “Cold enough for ya?” To which the other replied something about a brass monkey. It occurred to me that Mark Twain was right; we New Englanders are always focused on the weather, which humorist and journalist, Kin Hubbard, pointed out is a good thing, for “ninetenths of the people couldn’t start a conversation if it didn’t change once in a while.”

I suppose people have been using the “cold enough for ya?” greeting since the last Ice Age. As to “brass monkeys,” (for those who don’t

know), is a commonly believed term that refers to a brass platform used on early naval vessels that are designed to hold iron cannon balls in a stack within easy reach of the cannon, should hostilities suddenly arise. It’s alleged that in extremely cold weather, the brass would contract to a point where the cannon balls would fall off and roll around the deck. Thus, it was said to be, “cold enough to freeze the cannon balls off a brass monkey,” or words to that effect. However, many historians believe this to be a myth, arguing that no Navy would utilize something that would allow for live cannon balls to roll around a pitching deck. True or not, the phrase seems to get a lot of usage.

Keeping with the weather-metaphor theme, it appears there are an infinite number of responses to the timeless open-ended question, “How cold is it?”, which can elicit both literal and figurative responses, with the latter being more fun.

A literal answer involves simple facts. “It’s twelve degrees, with a wind chill of minus ten,” which I think we can all agree is a bit chilly.

A more colorful response might be: so cold hitchhikers are holding pictures of their thumbs; so cold that shivering counts as exercise; so cold I chipped a tooth…on my soup; so cold I had to break the smoke off my chimney; so cold that donut shops are serving coffee on a stick; or so cold we pulled everything out of the freezer and crawled inside to keep warm.

And to borrow another quote attributed to Mark Twain, “Cold! If the thermometer had been an inch longer we’d all have frozen to death!”

New expressions are being invented all the time. Perhaps, one day there will be a Star Trek episode where Scottie will say to Captain Kirk, “It’s cold enough to freeze the dilithium crystals off a warp drive.”

Of course, “cold” is a relative term. In autumn, after a hot summer, we think 50-degree weather

is cold, but by spring, after a long tough winter, we’re ready to start dancing in the streets in teeshirts, when the temperature gets that high.

And people have ways of describing the range of outdoor temperatures without using specific numbers.

For example:

“It’s sweater weather.”

“It’s jacket weather.”

“It’s coat weather.”

“It’s heavy coat and sweater weather.”

“I’m moving to Florida weather!”

And to those lucky enough to spend the winter in Florida, why do some of you insist on calling during a blizzard to ask, “So, how’s the weather up there?”

Yet, some embrace winter’s temperatures, such as skiers, snow-mobilers, ice fishermen, heating oil vendors, and those who enjoy partaking in “polar bear plunges.”

“C’mon in, the water’s fine!” Sure, in Bermuda!

New Englanders are generally well prepared for winter weather, but one wouldn’t know it by watching the nightly news before a big snowstorm. The obligatory footage of milk and bread flying off store shelves like it’s the end of civilization as

we know it, followed by people scrambling to buy everything from rock salt to snow blowers. dominates the first few minutes of the broadcast.

And, sometimes weather forecasters hint that the upcoming storm might be “one for the record books.”

Snowzilla!

Snowmagedden!

Franken-storm! OMG! Dude, ruuuun!

While the storm is raging, live broadcasts are done from remote locations. with reporters standing in the middle of it all, telling us it’s snowing.

No Kidding.

Yet, we can be optimistic, for there’s another quote attributed to Mark Twain that goes, “If you don’t like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes.”

For those who don’t like the cold, take heart, for summer weather will return.

There will likely be at least one “heat wave,” during which someone will no doubt ask, “Hot enough for ya?”

At least none of us will have to shovel a single drop of sunshine.
