The restaurant employs a dozen people and prides itself on serving dishes with a nod to the “Old Country.” Diners can feast on several signature dishes, including their bone-in veal chops that are so big that they take up the entire plate, their linguini and clams and their Italian stuffed artichokes. Patrons can also dive into their fresh fish dishes, chicken or veal parmigiana with pasta, or perhaps for dessert, their amazingly delicious homemade cannolis.
Perhaps their calling card is their "World Famous Expresso Martinis,” among other specialty cocktails that are infused with rosemary, ginger and other herbs to give them an authentic flair and taste.
Palmisano said that his goal for operating a successful restaurant is simple: “I want people to feel like they are eating at my house.”
He noted about how meals are cultivated back in Italy. “It starts with visiting the local butcher shop for the freshest meat, then walking to the garden to select the vegetables, and maybe to the local store to pick up a bottle of wine. Palmisano said that the restaurant strives to maintain this tradition because “farm to table” offers the best quality and flavors for their customers.
“I hope that when customers visit Anthony’s Italian Cuisine, they enjoy a little piece of Italy with every made-to-order dish,” he said.
The restaurant is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The bar remains open one hour after closing.

Cut TSA Lines for Free
May 27th was the last day to book a flight on Southwest Airlines without being hit with a fee to check bags after the airline abandoned a decades-long luggage policy that executives once described as key to differentiating the budget carrier from its rivals. The airline announced the change in March, saying that the new policy would start with flights booked on May 27th. Southwest said in a statement that it will be charging $35 for a first checked bag and $45 for a second checked bag.
Already dreading long security lines for your next flight? There’ve long been services that allow you to cut those lines, but you’ve got to open your wallet and do a good amount of prep work for them. Now, an option for those short on funds and time: the Reserve service by Clear, a free program that allows customers to book a spot ahead of time that sends them to the front of the line at TSA checkpoints.
Southwest had built years of advertising campaigns around its policy of letting passengers check up to two bags for free. Under its new policy, people who haven’t reached the upper tiers of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program, haven’t bought a business-class ticket, or don’t hold the airline’s credit card will have to pay for checked bags. Southwest will continue to offer two free checked bags to Rapid Rewards A-List preferred members and customers traveling on Business Select fares, and one free checked bag to A-List members and other select customers. Passengers with Rapid Rewards credit cards will receive a credit for one checked bag.
The Clear site explains how the process works: In advance of your flight (how long in advance depends on the airport), you’d simply log on to make a reservation for the time you’d like to pass through security. You’ll receive a QR code that, on the day of your flight, you’ll show to a staffer in the Reserve lane near the TSA checkpoint. The service isn’t available at every airport (there are about 20 in the US, Canada, and Europe currently listed) and even at those airports, the service may be limited to certain areas. A company rep said they’re working on adding more airports into the mix.
The airline said in March that it also would roll out a new, basic fare on its lowest priced tickets when the change takes effect. The airline estimated in September that charging bag fees would bring in about $1.5 billion a year but cost the airline $1.8 billion in lost business from customers who chose to fly Southwest because of its generous baggage allowance. Another policy that will take effect on Wednesday is Southwest requiring passengers to keep their portable chargers in plain sight while using them because of concerns about the growing number of lithium-ion battery fires.
Southwest previously announced that it was ditching another tradition, the open-boarding system it has used for more than 50 years. Southwest expects to begin operating flights with passengers in assigned seats next year. The airline announced in February that it was eliminating 1,750 jobs, or 15% of its corporate workforce, in the first major layoffs in the company’s 53-year history.

In a breakthrough that would make medieval alchemists envious, scientists at Europe’s Large Hadron Collider have successfully transformed lead into gold, producing 89,000 atoms per second.
It’s the tallest active geyser on the planet— with an emphasis on “active.” From 2015 to 2017, it didn’t erupt at all. There was another largely quiet period from 1911 to 1961, but in 2018 it logged a record-setting 32 eruptions, a feat it has crushed this year with 47 eruptions, per the US Geological Survey. Why? Good question, and one that hasn’t been answered. It’s one on a long list of geyser mysteries, in fact. The geyser-research field is a thin one, and as Yellowstone National Park’s hydrologist explained the area beneath Steamboat hasn’t been mapped. However, seismic sensors there have revealed that the geyser’s water source may sit as deep as 130 feet.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a giant particle accelerator that smashes atoms together at super-high speeds. Scientists there have found a way to knock three tiny particles called protons out of lead atoms, turning them into gold atoms.
Johnnie Mae had suffered two recent losses, including that of her father, when she stood in front of friends and family and committed to the love of her life on Monday. But within the hour, her groom was dead, too. As Mae and new husband Toraze Davis of Omaha, Nebraska, left the church where they said “I do,” Davis suffered a blood clot that made his heart stop. “It happened within seconds ... just after the ceremony had begun,” friend Jewel Roberson said. Family and friends are now rallying behind Mae, director ECO Supportive Living, which assists the elderly and those with disabilities. “Johnnie Mae has suffered through so much,” says Roberson. Now “she’s been widowed and married in a 10-minute span.”
The team behind this discovery, called the ALICE collaboration, used a unique way to create gold. Instead of crashing lead atoms head-on, they looked at what happens when the atoms just barely miss each other. Researchers explained that when this happens, powerful electromagnetic fields around the atoms can cause them to change into different elements.
“It’s impressive that our detectors can handle both major collisions that create thousands of particles and these smaller events that make just a few particles at a time,” Marco Van Leeuwen, who leads the ALICE project, said in a press release.
How much gold did they make?
During one period of experiments from 2015 to 2018, the scientists created about 86 billion gold atoms. That sounds like a lot, but when you add up all that gold, scientists said it only weighs about 29 picograms, which is less than a trillionth of a gram. You’d need trillions of times more to make even a tiny piece of jewelry.
“It’s seriously the saddest thing ever,” Tricia Pugsley said. She was supposed to DJ the couple’s wedding reception, but “they went to the hospital instead.” That’s where Mae “had to say goodbye to her new husband.”
The machine can create about 89,000 gold atoms every second, but each atom only exists for a tiny fraction of a second before breaking apart. Recent upgrades to the machine have almost doubled the amount of gold it can make, but it’s still far from practical use.
Most other geysers seem to be fueled by shallower reserves; deeper equals warmer, so that could be a factor in Steamboat’s ability to propel water to heights of more than 300 feet. Michael Poland with the USGS earlier this year said it’s possible that increased snowfall in Yellowstone of late has led to more groundwater to fuel the geyser. What scientists are saying is that there’s no link between the increased activity and any potential looming eruption of Yellowstone’s supervolcano. “Yellowstone has an incredible geyser system that is unrelated to magmatic activity—other than the magmatic system basically providing heat,” tweeted one volcanologist. If you live in Rhode Island, you’ve probably heard this refrain, or even spoken it yourself a time or two, at some point in your life.
Hot weiners are a much-beloved comfort food in our state, and because they are as ubiquitous as they are delicious, some people might take them for granted. Until they’re not around anymore. That’s what happened when Wein-O-Rama in Cranston closed its doors last summer, after being in operation for sixty-two years.
The long-standing restaurant was founded in 1962, by Mike Sotirakos, before his sons George and Ernie took over after his retirement, thirty years ago.
Then, in August of last year, the brothers decided to hang up their aprons for good, and just like that a staple in the community was gone. But not for long.
Cranston’s Wein-O-Rama is back in business thanks to Eric Beaune and Chris Tasca, two Rhode Island businessmen who not only have a soft spot for the six-decade old Cranston landmark but a great business sense. Beaune, owner of Garden Hills Fruit and Deli, and Chris Tasca, president and cofounder of Fly Alliance, a private aviation group that provides luxury jet charters and other aviation services, regarded their endeavor to reopen Wein-O-Rama as a ‘legacy project.’
The reopening day was May 13, and at 6 AM that morning there was a crowd outside waiting to come in and be among the first to be served. All day, the people never stopped coming, with the parking lot packed through the lunch hour. It’s been pretty much like that every day since.
“I’m really thankful that I got the opportunity to do this for the community,” co-owner Chris Tasca told the media the day of the reopening. “This is a really special place to me. It’s evident that it’s a really special place to Cranston.”
The owners have said that renovations were made to the kitchen and dining room, including new booths, but the feel will remain exactly the same as it has always been.
In keeping with the if-it-ain’t-broke-don’tfix-it creed, along with a lot of the former staff being rehired, there are no plans to change anything on the menu that their diners have come to love over the years, including the formula that has made their hot weiners such a local favorite.

Rhode Island’s hospitality community had a big reason to celebrate the future of the industry when a talented team of culinary students from William M. Davies, Jr. Career & Technical High School in Lincoln represented our state at the National ProStart® Invitational (NPSI) in Baltimore after winning the statewide culinary championship hosted by the RI Hospitality Education Foundation (RIHEF). These students didn’t just showcase their talent; they demonstrated the value of investing in hospitality education and career and technical training.
Prior to the competition, Governor Dan McKee visited Davies to meet the team and offer his support. His visit was more than ceremonial; it was a meaningful recognition of the critical role that career and technical education (CTE) plays in building Rhode Island’s workforce—particularly in the hospitality sector, which continues to face labor shortages and retention challenges across the board.
At schools like Davies, students receive more than classroom instruction—they are gaining practical skills, hands-on experience, and industry credentials that prepare them to step confidently into the workforce. Programs like ProStart expose students to culinary fundamentals, restaurant management principles, and the fast-paced realities of the hospitality industry. They also teach soft skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving— qualities that employers consistently tell us they look for but can be hard to find. Competing on a national stage gave these students the opportunity to showcase their talents to leaders from across the country, and to see firsthand how far their skills could take them. For many, it was their first time traveling for a professional opportunity, a formative and empowering experience.
For our industry, it was a powerful reminder of what’s
possible when we invest in young talent and support structured pathways into hospitality careers.
Governor McKee’s engagement reinforced this message. His presence affirmed the importance of aligning statelevel workforce initiatives with real-world education programs. We need more of that—more visibility, more support, and more collaboration between schools, government, and businesses to ensure these programs not only survive, but thrive.
The hospitality industry has faced enormous disruption over the past several years. While we’ve made great progress in recovery, long-term success will depend on our ability to build a sustainable workforce. That begins in classrooms, training kitchens, and schoolbased programs like the one at Davies, shining light on the exciting and fulfilling possibilities a career in hospitality can provide. It continues with mentorship, on-the-job learning, and meaningful employment opportunities offered by local businesses.
At RIHEF, we support these efforts through education, training, and direct engagement. From hosting statewide competitions to offering ServSafe certifications, resume workshops, and job readiness resources, our goal is to open doors for students and connect them with meaningful career paths. These aren’t abstract initiatives. They result in real jobs, longterm career development, and industry stability.

Students trained through programs like ProStart are better prepared, more motivated, and more likely to stay in the field when given the right opportunities. How Does Mental Health Affect Physical Health?

Mental and physical health are deeply connected. The mental health of your mind and your brain directly affects your physical being. It’s obvious when your physical being is not at its best, or you don’t feel your best, your mental health is directly affected. You are not focusing. You may have feelings of depression or anxiety. You may even start to get a headache from the stress because you are not eating. Your mental health has a similar effect on your physical being when you are not in a good, mental place. This could impact everything from chronic diseases, to sleep and immune function.
Let’s dive deeper into how your mental health affects your physical health. Some mental health conditions, like depression and anxiety, have been linked to an increased risk of developing chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, and even certain cancers. When your immune system is compromised or weakened, it can lead to chronic stress and mental health struggles, which then suppress the immune
system, making the body more susceptible to illness. Mental health conditions can disrupt the way you sleep, which can lead to poor sleep patterns. Some nights you may be up all night because your mind is racing. Poor sleep can directly affect physical health. You will probably feel daytime fatigue, which further impacts physical health in many ways. Mental health issues can lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as poor diet, lack of exercise, substance abuse, excess alcohol consumption and smoking, which all negatively impact physical health.
As mentioned earlier, mental health conditions can result in headaches, fatigue, digestive problems, and muscle tension. When an individual is struggling with mental health issues, they often neglect their physical needs. They disregard doctor appointments, they don’t eat properly, they don’t socialize etc. As I have mentioned in many articles, socialization is just as important as anything else, when it comes to being healthy. Your body is all connected. When you are off
physically, you are off mentally. When you are off mentally, it absolutely affects your physical health because it can cause you to lose interest in your daily routine. Everything from exercise to eating to going out with friends, missing appointments, etc. We need to keep the mind just as healthy as the body.
To keep the body healthy, we eat right, we exercise, we drink plenty of water, etc. The mind needs just as much attention as the body. To have and keep a healthy mind you first must eat. Your brain needs nutrition. It needs this to do basic functions. At one time or another, we have all skipped a meal or two. Not necessarily on purpose, but if you got busy at work, or the kids’ schedules have you running around, it’s easy to miss a meal. When this happens, you may have noticed you get a headache. This is very common when you don’t have food to fuel the brain.
Another thing you can do to keep the brain healthy is read. Reading is so good for your mind. You can also do mind puzzles or games. This is exercise for the brain, just like working out is exercise for the body. To keep the body young, we exercise. To keep the mind young, we must also exercise it by keeping it active.
If you are suffering from anxiety or depression, find a therapist or someone you can talk to. Staying in this state is not healthy at all.
After being in a very bad car accident, I didn’t have serious physical injuries, but I had a traumatic brain injury. Obviously, that affected my physical health, but I had to do a lot of therapy for my brain. My cognitive therapy included mind games, crossword puzzles, card games, etc. They had me perform activities to make me concentrate and think. I also fell into a depression, so what I write is not research I’ve read, it is my own life experience.
There are medications you can take to put you on an even keel, but even talking with someone is a form of medication, and does help. It helps to see a professional, not only because if you do need medication, they can prescribe it, but it helps to talk to someone not in your close circle. Getting a professional, an outside opinion, helps in so many ways. These professionals will give you guidance on how to rethink and get you to a more positive place. Your brain is an amazing tool, but again, it needs activity to keep working. To summarize and to reiterate, the mind and the body are connected. One directly affects the other. You must exercise both to stay healthy.

It’s Never too Late to Plan Ahead
The Law Firm of Brule, Nault & Hainley help families map out their financial futures.

“There is no time like the present,” could be seen as, “living in the moment instead of in the past.” The future holds promise and opportunities. This is especially true when families grow. Many people understand that planning for the future becomes very important. Knowing what comes next can impact what families can do to plan for that situation.
A Cumberland-based law firm, whose attorneys combine for a century of experience, has the knowledge to educate clients about some of the legal pitfalls associated with getting older. The Law Firm of Brule, Nault, and Hainley, located at 1334 Mendon Road (Rte. 122), helps clients with
these and other services. Much of their practice focuses on preparing wills, trusts and powers of attorney, as well as probate, Medicaid, longterm care, and other topics that are of concern to families.
Partner Andy Nault encourages new clients to bring any documents that they may already have with them when they meet. He said that the firm wants to help people to understand what their plan consists of, and either update or add to it, or tell them they already have what is necessary.
“Many people have something in place, but it may have been done years ago,” Nault said. “They may
not know or remember what they put in place. Since then, they could have experienced a life event such as marriage, children, divorce, job transfer, or something else. We can review what they have, and provide feedback. In some cases, what they have in effect is perfectly fine—no changes are needed—and we tell them that. If they need an update, then we work with them and review some options.”
The firm distinguishes itself from some other attorneys who practice in the same field regarding its pricing options. They rarely use an hourly rate to charge for services, as many other practices do. Instead, they frequently utilize a fixed pricing structure that enables clients to use their services (such as calling them with questions). without worrying about running up billable hours. Nault said that this hourly billing can result in a “chilling effect” on attorney-client communication. Flat fee billing allows for more open and honest discussion, leading to the resolution of issues before they become bigger problems.
Nault also said that there is no wrong time to start planning ahead, and that many people tend to wait until they are older and have assets they would like to protect. While there is no magic age to start preparing, Nault acknowledges those in their 60s are a sweet spot for him and the firm, especially when it comes to long-term care issues.
“When people are in their forties, they tend to start planning for probate avoidance and other care options. When they are in their sixties, that is when they often become more concerned about nursing home expenses. Some people wait until their 80s, but there might be fewer affordable options at that point. We work with anyone at any age to explain what happens in different scenarios to allow them to make the best decision about what issues to address as part of their estate plan,” he said.
Education is at the core of this practice. Several areas of concern coming from clients stem from any one of the following categories:
Nursing Homes Placement. Nault said that when
applying for government assistance, there is a fiveyear look back that applies to someone’s finances, to see how they have either spent or allocated their money. Gifts to family members, for example, are frowned upon, if they are determined to be made for the intent to avoid paying for long-term care. This type of gifting could result in the denial of eligibility for government assistance for that client. Navigating through the legality of these issues can be tricky and downright difficult without someone directing them.
“The government isn’t going to simply take someone’s word for it. They are going to look into the documents and see what is actually happening. If they find something strange, then they will ask for an explanation. Clients will want to be up front with their expenses so it doesn’t cause problems,” he said.
Probate. This process remains vital in ensuring the authenticity of all signed documents from each party. It also makes certain that everything was completed correctly and that the wishes of the deceased are followed through. While probate can be expensive and time-consuming, it can be avoided with proper planning.
The firm currently has 11 employees, and has been a fixture in town for nearly three decades (since 1997). The Best Way To Paint a New Steel Door
If you have ever installed a new steel door, you may have noticed that the manufacturer tends to make it quite clear that the warranty on the door is only good if the door is properly painted within ‘X’ amount of time after being installed.
This is great, except for the fact that they do not teach how to paint the door, they simply demand that you do it, or else feel the wrath of having your new door investment not being warrantied.
Wonderful.
So, how exactly do you paint a new steel door?
Even though it is new, the door still needs some prep work before painting.
With the aim of keeping things easy peasy, here is a simple guide:
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Before you start, make sure you have everything you need:
• Mild dish soap (I prefer ‘Dawn’) and water
• Sponge or cloth
• Sandpaper (220-grit)
• Painter’s tape
• Drop cloth, plastic, and/or newspaper
• Paintbrush, foam roller, or paint sprayer
• Rust-inhibiting primer (made for metal)
• Exterior paint (acrylic or latex-based)
• Razor blade (if the door has a window)
• Screwdriver (if removing the door)
Step 2: Remove or Protect Hardware
If possible, take the door off its hinges, using a screwdriver. Lay it flat on a drop cloth (or newspaper) to make painting easier. If you can’t remove it, use painter’s tape to cover the doorknob, hinges, and any windows, yet still make sure you have areas around it protected with a drop cloth, plastic, and/or newspaper. If painting a door with a glass window, you can use painter’s tape to keep paint off the glass.
Step 3: Clean the Door
Even though the door may be new, it could have oil or dirt on it from the factory. Wash it with warm, soapy water and a sponge to remove grease. Rinse it with clean water and let it dry completely before moving on.
Step 4: Lightly Sand the Surface
Most steel doors come with a factory-applied primer. To help paint stick better, lightly sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper. This roughens up the primer so the layer of primer you are about to apply can grip. Wipe off dust with a damp cloth, and let the door dry.
Step 5: Apply Primer
When in doubt, prime. Even if your door is already primed. Prime. Even if the factory primer looks smooth and clean. Prime. Let it dry completely before painting.
Step 6: Paint the Door
Now it’s time to paint! Use high-quality exterior paint that is ok to use on metal. A small brush is good for edges, while a foam roller or a sprayer (if you are experienced enough to use one) gives a smooth finish on large areas.
Apply the first coat in thin, even strokes. Let it dry completely before adding a second coat. Two coats are usually enough, but a third coat may be needed for full coverage. Always let each coat dry before applying the next.
Step 7: Let It Dry and Reinstall
Once the final coat is dry, remove any painter’s tape (if the door has glass and any paint gets on the glass, the paint can gently be taken off with a razor blade). If you removed the door, put it back on its hinges carefully. Let the paint cure fully before closing the door completely. This may take 24 to 48 hours.

Allmark Signs and Graphics gets the message out for businesses.

A family-operated business in Pawtucket, spanning more than three decades, continues thriving with its same commitment to excellence. Where it once began in a small room has transformed into a reliable place for companies to be noticed.
Allmark Signs and Graphics, located in the Concord Street Complex, does all types of signage for any business-to-business endeavors. They can do small signs with a quick turnaround time to intricate projects that take more detail and time.
Owner Rick Goyette said that Allmark strives to be a one-stop shop for customers. If they can dream it, then Rick and his staff can turn that vision into reality. The firm looks to make the process as simple as possible.
“I can piece it together,” he said. “There are many pieces that have to fit into their particular timeline for everything to work. I can be the person who ensures that the project gets done with all of the aspects including permitting, sizing, and installation, among other points, on time and well within their budget.”
Goyette said that the process begins with a phone call. He looks for some ideas of what the project entails, deadlines, and costs. From there, an in-person meeting (usually within a day of the initial call) happens to map out the project. Depending on the scope of the sign, he can figure out what type of sign works within the parameters of available space.
He said the key for him and the customer is fostering realistic expectations. He would rather design a sign that works within the budget needs of the client. He added that developing a wonderful sign that is not affordable becomes counterproductive.
Sign development can take from one day for small projects, up to several months for larger ones. Goyette will establish a workable timeline that will answer those questions. He can also plan for any potential obstacles that may arise.
While Goyette and his staff prefer having as much time as possible to complete projects, a couple of recent works were done quickly because there was a major event happening.
“The Asian American Pacific Islander History Museum was holding its grand opening with many dignitaries, in three weeks, and had not yet secured their building signage,” Goyette recalled. “They were motivated to get this done. We got permit applications in quickly, and then designed the sign, which they approved. It was picked up and installed the afternoon before their event. The next day, their event went off without a hitch.”
It is not just groups that Goyette works alongside. He also partners with commercial realtors, vehicle wraps, optical signage, and more. A graphic designer on staff can also create a new sign based on their specific needs. Also, signs can be updated, upgraded with LED lighting, or refurbished. Goyette recommends that any sign more than seven years old should be updated. It is one option he looks forward to speaking with business owners about.
Early Beginnings.
Goyette explained that the company began in 1989, with his mother, Betty Goyette, starting Allmark International in her daughter’s bedroom. Betty had been in business for some time, before striking out on her own. Her company moved from that room into their garage, and she later purchased a building that would be the home to the company for many years.
The name “Allmark International” was created with strategic and sentimental intent: “Allmark” ensured an early listing in
the Yellow Pages, and paid tribute to National Marker, where Betty began her signage career. “International” honored her husband Dick’s professional roots at International Stencil, the business founded by his uncle, where he first got his start. Originally focused on safety signs and selling nationally, Betty purchased a Budget Sign and began supplying more custom signage to local customers.
In a full-circle moment, Betty and Dick also later acquired International Stencil, supporting the local jewelry industry, with custom spray stencils.
When Betty passed away in 2006, Goyette’s brother, Mike, took over. Goyette worked as an executive for 30 years. He established himself as a purveyor of vendors, services, and entrepreneurs. Mike continued to run the business with an increased focus on custom signage for the next decade plus, while gradually transitioning to other business interests. When Goyette began looking for a new professional challenge in 2024, Mike suggested taking the reins of Allmark. Goyette rebranded Allmark International to Allmark Signs and Graphics. The rebranding to emphasize a renewed focus on commercial signs and graphics. Most importantly, Goyette joined the Signworld Alliance.

“There is a fair amount of waste after these initial projects are done,” he said. “Instead of just throwing it away, I decided to be sustainable. It’s one way of giving back.”

“I started going around the beginning of April, and have already experienced and reciprocated the benefits, and gained many new friendships. The group truly cares about each other and our mutual success.” Mallett shared.
His business specializes in lawn care and mowing, installing flower beds, mulching, ornamental pruning, and leaf removal. Henry enjoys the outdoors, which makes his endeavor perfect for his talents. After discovering his knack for helping homeowners, he decided to pursue his passion full-time in May 2023.
While he thinks globally, Mallett acts locally. His services extend throughout Rhode Island. For clients who just need their lawns mowed either weekly or bi-weekly, Mallett prefers working within Warwick, East Greenwich, and Cranston. He explained that his calling card is being meticulous.
“I take immense pride in my work,” he said. “There are miniscule details that I see that others would not merit a second look. For example, I may see an edge on a flower bed that isn’t completely straight. Someone else may think it is, but I make sure mine is like a laser. The same holds true for seasonal cleanups. I always shoot to get every last leaf. I hold myself to this standard for every project.”
Mallett works for primarily residential clients. He would like to expand into the commercial market. An ideal client is someone who cares about their lawn and does not mind paying a little extra for its maintenance. His goal is to grow a full service customer base, but someone who just needs a mow is also a good referral.

Statewide Chamber Business After Hours Draws a Crowd

Rhode Island, the smallest state in the U.S., has long proven that small size doesn’t mean small opportunity. One of the best examples of that is Statewide Business After Hours, a collaboration among the 14 chambers of commerce across the state that has become a cornerstone of the Rhode Island professional and economic networking scene.
Every year, hundreds of business owners and employees descend upon the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick to participate in a long-standing tradition of networking and sharing.
Visitors were treated to food and drink samples, giveaways, drawings and other fun activities, other vendors demonstrated their capabilities and services. Since its inception, this event has blossomed into a must-attend event for any networker.
Lauren Slocum, President of the Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, said the event
gets bigger each year because people who attend share their experiences with their colleagues.
“This is the one time on our calendar that enables all of the Chambers to come together and show support for the local business community,” she said. “Attendees see companies from other parts of the state that they may not otherwise be aware of and meet potential business partners in the meantime. It’s one of the events many people are looking forward to attending.”
The idea behind the event was simple but powerful: create a statewide gathering where business professionals could connect across city and town lines and businesses could highlight their products and services.
In the late 1990s, the RI Chambers of Commerce united to bring that idea to life. The first Statewide Business After Hours took place at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston, a central and iconic venue that provided the perfect backdrop for this new kind of networking event that brought together over 300 people.
The event quickly gained momentum and grew to over 800 people by 2016. The networking event offered a broader reach than traditional local after-hours events by uniting professionals and from every corner of the Ocean State. It wasn’t long before it became one of the most anticipated networking events of the year.
“It was great to see a wide array of people attending this event,” Lauren said. “We kept seeing new companies and established businesses alike come and expand their networks. Word-ofmouth helped spread the popularity of this event. It continues growing, which is a good sign.”

In 2021, the event found a new home at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, where it continues to
thrive. The new venue offers a large, flexible layout that accommodates a growing number of vendors and attendees.
Statewide Business After Hours continues to evolve and now features samplings of delicious foods from local caterers, restaurants, and hotels. Thus, creating a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for mingling and conversation.

The 2025 event, held on April 30, was one of the most successful to date. Over 100 businesses displayed as vendors, showcasing products and services ranging from finance and technology to wellness and hospitality. The event drew more than 600 attendees, including small business owners, nonprofit leaders, corporate professionals, and municipal officials.
The energy was high as attendees made new contacts, explored potential partnerships, and celebrated the strength and variety within the Rhode Island business community.
Collaboration that Strengthens the Economy.
What makes the Statewide Business After Hours so impactful is its spirit of collaboration over competition. By working together, chambers from across the state create opportunities that extend far beyond their individual communities. The event serves as a vivid reminder that in Rhode Island, regional cooperation can unlock statewide success.
