PROGRAM NOTE: NIGHT TRANSIT is inspired by long-distance night travels by public transport such as plains, trains, busses or sea-ferries, which create a certain state of suspension – between places and dates, and between events that happened before the journey and will happen later; all that happens now, during the journey is temporal and seems to function in a very different way than everyday life.

Such journeys also have a unique sonic aura. It’s dominated by the sound produced by the means of transport – a certain kind of engine and the roadbed or environment through which we travel. This mechanical, monotonous and in a way aggressive sound becomes the background for all thoughts and feelings; it gives them rhythm and color. It is inescapable so one has to somehow familiarize it and “unite” with it. All this creates a strange, trans-like state of mind, which is the subject of this composition.

The piece was commissioned by the 10. SACRUM-PROFANUM Festival and written in 2012.

PERFORMANCE NOTES: General: The score is transposing.

Accidentals are valid within measures; cautionary accidentals can occur in parenthesis.

Quartertone notation: quartertone up, expense of fluency of the music. normal fermata,

short fermata,

quartertone down. Quartertones should be realized as precisely as possible, however not at the long fermata

Percussion: Suggestions of mallets are orientational and can be omitted if the performer feels the other choice is better.

Placement of beaters on the drum or cymbal:

center,

rim.

Setup of instruments should enable playing simultaneously on the whole set.

Strings: ST sul tasto (over fret), SP sul ponticello (close to bridge), ORD ordinario (normal)

NOTKA PROGRAMOWA: NIGHT TRANSIT inspirowany jest długimi, nocnymi podróżami na dalekich dystansach – zbiorowymi środkami lokomocji jak samolot, pociąg, autobus czy prom morski i związanym z nimi szczególnym stanem zawieszenia – pomiędzy miejscami i datami, oraz pomiędzy wydarzeniami, które miały miejsce przed podróżą i będą miały miejsce po niej; wszystko co wydarza się teraz, w trakcie podróży ma wymiar tymczasowy i wydaje się funkcjonować na innych niż codzienne życie zasadach.

Podróże takie wiążą się też ze specyficzną aurą brzmieniową – absolutnie dominujący jest dźwięk związany z rodzajem środka lokomocji, czyli takiego czy innego silnika i rodzaju podłoża czy ośrodka przez które się przemieszczamy. Ten mechaniczny, monotonny i w pewnym sensie agresywny dźwięk staje się tłem dla wszystkich myśli i odczuć; nadaje im rytm i barwę. Nie da się od niego uwolnić, więc trzeba go w jakiś sposób oswoić i się z nim „sprząc”. Wszystko to składa się na specyficzny, bliski transu stan świadomości, o którym opowiada utwór.

Utwór powstał w roku 2012, na zamówienie X Festiwalu SACRUM-PROFANUM.

UWAGI WYKONAWCZE: Ogólne: Partytura jest transponująca.

Znaki chromatyczne obowiązują w taktach, w ramach jednej oktawy. Miejscami mogą pojawiać się znaki pomocnicze w nawiasach.

Notacja ćwierćtonowa: ćwierć tonu w górę, kosztem płynności przebiegu muzycznego fermata zwykła,

fermata krótka,

ćwierć tonu w dół.Zapis ćwierćtonowy należy realizować możliwie precyzyjnie, jednak nie

fermata długa

Perkusja: Sugestie wyboru pałek są orientacyjne i mogą być pominięte jeśli inny wybór jest z jakichś względów lepszy.

Umiejscowienie gry na membranie lub talerzu:

Ustawienie instrumentów powinno umożliwiać jednoczesną grę na całym zestawie.
