e place changed the face of the environment, seriously a ected by the economic crisis le by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jimenez was born in San Mateo Ozolco, in Puebla, Mexico, and the culture has permeated his life, especially the food, around which the family gathered. “Every day we spent together with food was good”, he said in an interview with AL DÍA

He learned his rst culinary lessons from the women in his family: his grandmother, his mom and his aunts, when it was rare for men to get into the kitchen. So, as he says, he learned “on the sly”.

But it wasn’t just watching them, it was understanding the transcendence and respect for food. It’s a ritual. “It’s not just putting everything together and cooking, but respecting each individual part of a dish”, he says.

At the age of 10, he began working casually in construction, and at 14 he had his rst contact with restaurants washing dishes until he became an executive chef in Mexico.

In 1998 he arrived in Philadelphia and started at the bottom, having the language barrier as a brake. But, as in his country, he worked his way up and had the opportunity to learn from the best chefs in the city.

It took six years to produce and stars actress Laura Paredes, who plays the character of Lau-

ra, a biologist who disappears without a trace. It is part of a series of lms about the same character that began in 2011 with Ostende.

Trenque Lauquen won Best Latin American Film at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, and was also acclaimed at festivals in Venice, San Sebastian and New York.z

Los que se bajan en la parada Somerset, en Kensington encuentran un lugar muy especial, colorido y con la magia de México. Se trata de Cantina La Martina, el primer restaurante del chef mexicano Dionicio Jiménez, quien es nalista del premio James Beard 2023 al Mejor Chef del Atlántico Medio.

El sitio le cambió la cara al entorno, afectado seriamente por la crisis económica que dejó la pandemia por COVID-19. Jiménez nació en San Mateo Ozolco, en Puebla (México) y la cultura ha impregnado su vida, especialmente la comida, alrededor de la cual se reunía la familia. “Todos los días que pasábamos juntos con comida eran buenos”, dijo en una entrevista con AL DÍA. Aprendió las primeras lecciones de culinaria de las mujeres de su familia: la abuela, su mamá y sus tías, cuando era poco frecuente que los hombres se metieran en la cocina. Así que, como dice, aprendió “a escondidas”.

Pero no fue solo verlas, sino entender la trascendencia y el respeto por la comida. Es un ritual. “No es sólo juntar todo y cocinar, sino respetar cada parte individual de un plato”, señala.

A los 10 años empezó a trabajar casualmente en construcción y a los 14 tuvo el primer contacto con los restaurantes lavando platos hasta llegar a ser chef ejecutivo en México.

En 1998 llegó a Filadel a y empezó de abajo teniendo como freno la barrera del idioma. Pero como en su país fue ascendiendo y tuvo la oportunidad de aprender de los mejores chef de la ciudad.

Por otra parte, en Cultura se destaca el artículo relacionado con la cineasta argentina Laura Citarella y Trenque Lauquen, su película que se estrena por estos días en Estados Unidos.

Su producción duró seis años, es protagonizada por la actriz Laura Paredes, quien encarna el personaje de Laura, una bióloga que desaparece sin dejar rastro. Hace parte de una serie de películas sobre el mismo personaje que empezó en el 2011 con Ostende.

The Pennsylvania Real Estate Commission oversees the State’s real estate industry, guided by the Commissioner as they oversee and enforce state law.

Kyle Sampson is the rst African American and Muslim to hold o ce as Real Estate Commissioner of Pennsylvania, overseeing the Commission as it appraises, educates, and licenses industry members across the state.

e Commission has multiple representatives from both private and public sectors, with 11 total members. ere is at least one representative from the cemetery, real estate, and broker industries, with another three being una liated public members. e nal two are a customer protection representative, and the Commissioner.

Overseeing 25 di erent license classes, they choose who can operate in the real estate industry, enforces laws regarding real estate activities, and decide whether a licensee should have their license revoked or suspended should they break the law.

As of Dec. 31, 2021, there were over 71,000 active licensees overseen by the Commission.

POLITICS IN PERSON

Ever since a young age, Sampson has taken an interest in politics.

Beginning with political internships, he learned from gures such as the late Philadelphia Councilman John C. Anderson, the rst Black gay man to serve on the Council, and the late U.S. House of Representatives Majority Whip William H. Gray, III, the rst African-American to serve as Majority Whip.

Later, he served as the President of the Young Democrats of Philadelphia from 1986 through 1989. Making his rst bid for public o ce in 1987, he became the youngest-ever member of the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee.

Sampson would serve two terms before departing from politics for nearly three decades, traveling abroad in the interim, until his re-election in 2018 and 2022, respectively.

Desde muy joven, Sampson se ha interesado por la política. Empezando por prácticas en política, aprendió de guras como el difunto concejal de Filadel a John C. Anderson, el primer homosexual negro que formó parte del Concejo, y William H. Gray III, el difunto jefe de la mayoría de la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos, el primer afroamericano que ocupó el cargo de jefe de la mayoría.

Posteriormente, entre 1986 y 1989, fue presidente de los Jóvenes Demócratas de Filadel a. En su primera candidatura a un cargo público, en 1987, se convirtió en el miembro más joven del Comité Estatal Demócrata de Pensilvania.

Sampson cumpliría dos mandatos antes de apartarse de la política durante casi tres décadas, con un viaje al extranjero en el ínterin, hasta su reelección en el 2018 y en el 2022, respectivamente.

For the last decade-plus in Philadelphia, Ogbonna ‘Paul’ Hagins has gone by Philly Green Man.

Inspired by then-presidential candidate Barack Obama’s talk of the “green economy” during his 2008 run to the White House, Hagins began to take more notice of the amount of things Philadelphians threw out on a daily basis.

“We are a wasteful society,” Hagins told AL DÍA in an interview earlier this year. “ e wealth of America is going to land lls everyday.”

were only a few of the things Hagins discovered on the curbs of Philly during his drives around the city.

He began ipping his nds for cash, giving him another source of income, but it soon grew bigger than just the money. Soon, Hagins was sending shoes and more to countries around the world in need and launching citywide campaigns to educate residents about the importance of recycling and the power of repurposing — all in the e ort to better an environment that was quickly seeing more drastic e ects of climate change.

Now, in 2023, Hagins hopes to take some of his environmental preservation ideas and much more to Philadelphia City Hall as an at-Large candidate on Philadelphia City Council. He is one of 29 candidates on the Democratic at-

While a Green New Deal for Philadelphia is part of Hagins platform and calls for a “serious waste management” plan with more educational e orts around recycling, at the center of his campaign and weaved into every point, is education.

at is rooted in Hagins own upbringing in North Philadelphia. It was there, at 7th and Allegheny Streets, that he would learn the story of his father — murdered at 21 years old, and when Hagins was two. He was an army vet and gi ed student who rose to sergeant in the service and was a mechanical dra er in civilian life.

“I wanted to be like my dad,” Hagins told AL DÍA of his early life and drive to succeed in school.

He wants to instill that same drive and desire for education into youth and residents across Philadelphia about a number of topics — from the green economy and critical thinking to how city government operates.

“Education is the passport to the future,” Hagins said, quoting Malcolm X, “and it belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

EDUCATION IS THE KEY

e rst bit of education Hagins wants to bring to City Council is by getting the legislative body out of its chambers once a month to conduct a meeting at a community space around Philadelphia — and make it on a Saturday.

“La educación es el pasaporte al futuro”, dijo Hagins citando a Malcolm X, “y pertenece a quienes hoy se preparan para él”.

LA EDUCACIÓN ES LA CLAVE

Lo primero que Hagins busca aportar al Ayuntamiento en cuanto a educación es hacer que el órgano legislativo salga de su despacho una vez al mes, para celebrar una reunión en un espacio comunitario de Filadel a y que sea un sábado.

Cherelle Parker has done something no Latino elected o cial could in North Philly for the last 25 years — she united the community’s leaders behind one candidate.

e rst endorsements came at a press conference outside of Philadelphia City Hall on March 23, as Parker was endorsed by a slate of PA State Representatives, among which were current Rep. Jose Giral and former Rep. Angel Cruz.

“Let’s make history. Our 100th mayor will be Cherelle Parker, a woman, let’s make sure to get it right this time. We’ve had men, now we’re gonna have a woman,” Cruz said at the press conference.

With Giral and Cruz backing Parker at that point in the race, it looked as though the Philly’s Latino leaders would still split — with one side going for Parker and the other backing María Quiñones Sánchez.

WITH MARÍA OUT, IT’S CHERELLE

But with Quiñones Sánchez dropping out on April 9, it’s Parker that’s been the quickest to lobby the city’s Latino leaders and wider community for support. Not only has Parker picked up some subsequent Latino endorsements, but she also cited Quiñones Sánchez’s Agenda Latina — which she released upon dropping out — at a recent Latino mayoral forum at Esperanza.

As for endorsements, it hasn’t been unanimous — Helen Gym picked up the endorsement of Make the Road Action PA, the political arm of the largest Latino organizing group in PA that advocates for Spanish-speaking and immigrant communities — but in terms of the Latino establishment, it’s all Parker.

On ursday, April 13, Parker was not at City Hall but in Norris Square to celebrate the yet another vital endorsement from State Rep. Danilo Burgos.

Sin embargo, tras la retirada de Quiñones Sánchez, el 9 de abril, Parker ha sido la más rápida en presionar a los líderes latinos de la ciudad y a la comunidad en general para que la apoyen. Y aparte de lograr ese apoyo, citó la Agenda Latina de Quiñones Sánchez, que publicó al retirarse, en un reciente foro de alcaldes latinos en Esperanza. Los apoyos no han sido unánimes. Helen Gym recibió el apoyo de Make the Road Action PA, el brazo político del mayor grupo organizador latino de Pensilvania, que aboga por las comunidades hispanohablantes e inmigrantes. Pero, en términos de la clase dirigente latina, todo es Parker.

“We had been supporting Councilwoman Sánchez since she announced last year,” Burgos told AL DÍA shortly a er the Parker endorsement. “Unfortunately, she ended her campaign this week, and we identi ed [Cherelle Parker] collectively as the person that we all wanted to work with.”

It’s a big change, given Burgos is out from under the tree of Quiñones Sánchez, who was an ardent detractor of the Democratic establishment and its leaders like Cruz.

Despite the history, Burgos has still maintained a closer relationship with the party in his time in Harrisburg than his mentor ever did in City Hall. It’s an approach similar to Quiñones Sánchez’s successor on Council — Councilmember Quetcy Lozada — who was supposed to join Burgos at the podium in Norris Square, but o cially announced her own Parker endorsement the next day in a post on Instagram.

WHY PARKER?

Parker’s team and plans are a major reason why she’s been able to unite Latino North Philly in her campaign.

On the surface, her campaign team is the most outwardly Latino of any in the eld. Ne ali Ramos, a longtime Latino behind-the-scenes operator on campaigns, is Parker’s political director. Sinceré Harris is also Parker’s campaign manager and is Afro-Latino of Puerto Rican descent.

“We are a very Latino-focused campaign, and very proud of that,” Parker’s senior advisor Aren Platt, told AL DÍA.

On the campaign trail, Parker also o en cites her lived experiences as reasons she’s quali ed for the job. She grew up poor in

Burgos. “Hemos estado apoyando a la concejala Sánchez desde su anuncio, el año pasado”, dijo Burgos a AL DÍA, poco después del respaldo a Parker. “Desafortunadamente, ella terminó su campaña esta semana, e identi camos [a Cherelle Parker] colectivamente como la persona con la que todos queríamos trabajar”, indicó.

Es un gran cambio, dado que Burgos sale del árbol de Quiñones Sánchez, que era un ardiente detractor del establecimiento demócrata y sus líderes como Cruz.

A pesar de la historia, durante su tiempo en Harrisburg, Burgos logró mantener una relación con el partido que su mentor en el Ayuntamiento jamás alcanzó a tener. Es un enfoque similar al de la sucesora de Quiñones Sánchez en el Concejo, la concejal Quetcy Lozada, que se suponía que iba a unirse a Burgos en el podio en Norris Square. Pero anunció o cialmente su propio apoyo a Parker al día siguiente, en una publicación en Instagram.

A JAMES BEARD FINALIST AT SOMERSET

Alittle more than two years ago, the Somerset El stop in Kensington and its surrounding neighborhood became the face of the negative e ects of the COVID-19 pandemic, as SEPTA closed the station down to repair its two elevators that were damaged by discarded needles, trash and urine.

For residents, the closure was yet another example of how city leadership long ignored and isolated them — forcing them to travel to Allegheny or Huntington to catch a train to work or elsewhere and with very little notice.

It’s a narrative that’s told far too o en in the neighborhood that’s also become ground zero for the U.S.’s battle against opioid addiction, but it’s not the only one that exists there.

A BRIGHT SPOT AT SOMERSET

Two years on from the temporary closure and the problems visibly remain, but now there’s also a bright spot for all who get o at Somerset.

What used to be the dull, matte gray wood paneling of a bar long closed down on the corner is now bright yellow with a blue trim. To the le of the entrance around the corner is now also a colorful piece of art on brick with a woman donning a colorful Day of the Dead mask as its centerpiece, o ering a hint of what to expect behind the coke-bottle glass windows that remain from the building’s previous iteration.

It’s the creation and rst restaurant from Mexican Chef Dionicio Jimenez, now a 2023 James Beard Finalist for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic. e recognition is not only for the authentic yet creative twists he puts on traditional Mexican dishes from his childhood and elsewhere, but also what it brings to the surrounding community both culinarily and culturally.

“Nobody talks about the families, only the drugs and crime in Kensington,” he said.

ey are who Jimenez’s rst restaurant is for, and it’s one that is 24 years in the making.

LEARNING TO COOK IN SECRET

Like a majority of South Philadelphia’s Mexican community, Jimenez is a native of San Mateo Ozolco, in Puebla, Mexico. ere, and from an early age, he can remember food always playing an integral part of life.

“Every day we passed together with food was good,” he said.

Whether it was breakfast, lunch, dinner or a party, food was what the family gathered around to spend their time.

“It’s a reconciliation,” said Jimenez of food’s power to bring people together.

It was his grandmother that led the kitchen at big gatherings, but beyond her, his mother and aunts were the head chefs of the family kitchen, and who a young Dionicio would get his rst culinary lessons from.

He’d watch as they prepared michmole or mole poblano for celebrations like Easter and nopales, salsa, fresh tortillas or beans on any regular day. Sometimes Jimenez would also help out by fetching ingredients from the garden or in any other way he could in the kitchen without facing scorn. At the time, food preparation was still very much only a woman’s role in the household.

Still, Jimenez found ways to pick up best practices from his mom and aunts.

“Everytime I learned, it was hidden,” he told AL DÍA. “It was sneaky.”

But those hidden lessons would eventually translate as he became more serious in the culinary world — both in Mexico and the U.S. In his own words, Jimenez learned the “respect that one gives food” from his family, but also the other families he would join in kitchens in Mexico and Philadelphia.

“It’s like a ritual,” said Jimenez of preparing a dish. “It’s not just putting everything together and cooking, but respecting each individual part of a dish.”

His best example of this from early in life came from watching his mother and aunts prepare mole. eir days-long process involved everything from picking the chiles to milling them, roasting them and then nally incorporating them into the dish on the third or fourth day.

CHEF TO DISHWASHER AND BACK AGAIN

sites and the like, but it was the restaurant work that stuck. At 14, he started as a dishwasher and would rise through the ranks — from busboy to executive chef over the years within his home country.

Always a learner, Jimenez called the journey “a good experience because I began to learn di erent things and meet di erent people.”

It was a journey he’d have to repeat upon coming to Philadelphia in 1998. When arriving, aside from the cold weather and language barrier — “In ‘98, it was hard to nd anyone who spoke Spanish” — Jimenez was also a dishwasher again at ChinChin, a restaurant in Center City, and also worked at Vetri Cucina at night.

e new reality initially le a bad taste in Jimenez’s mouth about Philly given his prior kitchen experience, but he once again turned into a sponge to learn as much as he could and rose through the ranks again.

“When I rst came, I didn’t see it. But now it’s worthwhile,” said Jimenez.

His new jobs also put him in contact with some of Philly’s best to learn from, including Philippe Chin, Marc Vetri, Je Benjamin, Michael Solomonov and eventually, Stephen Starr. Beyond the leaders, Jimenez said he would also learn from all those he worked alongside in the kitchen.

“ ey were my mentors and everyone who’s crossed my path has taught me something di erent from their own experiences,” he said.

So once again, Jimenez rose from dishwasher to prep cook, to line cook, to station lead, to head chef — rst at Xochitl in 2007 — and then executive chef — at Starr’s El Vez in 2015.

A PANDEMIC PRAYER ANSWERED

But along the way, there was always a dream to have a spot to call his own.

“Every chef wants their own restaurant,” said Jimenez.

His dream had always moved before Cantina La Martina.

At Xochitl, it was a crash course on learning how to run a kitchen e ectively and El Vez was similar but still extremely busy.

During the pandemic, Jimenez said he thought he’d have to let his dream die, but longtime friend Edgar Ramírez at Philatinos Radio put him in contact with a lender that

helped secure a loan for the restaurant’s current location.

THE CHANGE KENSINGTON DESERVES

“I know I want to achieve my dream but…” was Jimenez’s rst thought when seeing where in Kensington his new restaurant would be located during a Summer tour — in the neighborhood’s heart under the El at Somerset.

Jimenez can also remember seeing the tents on both sides of the street where people lived and the overall human su ering that played out on a daily basis.

His friends were also quick to try and dissuade him from opening under the El.

“Don’t do it. Don’t take this location. It’s ugly,” Jimenez remembers their words.

It almost worked, until one day Jimenez came early to the location in the Fall and saw the amount of youth from the surrounding neighborhood that ride the train to school everyday and it changed his whole perspective.

“We always focus on the negative when it comes to Kensington,” Jimenez said. “Yes, there’s a bad reputation of drugs and crime in Kensington, but apart from that there’s families, there’s children, there’s innocent people that live in Kensington. And nobody sees this.”

Cantina La Martina o cially opened its doors in February 2022 and was named a er the song “La Martina” by ‘El Charro de México’ Antonio Aguilar and a lm of the same name. Both have followed Jimenez throughout most of his life.

In a little more than a year, not only has Cantina La Martina become a favorite for those in the surrounding neighborhood, but also the entire city. Every day, more and more curious diners make their way to the restaurant via the El or other modes of transports at’s only poised to expand more following Jimenez’s 2023 recognition by the James Beard Foundation, where he’s nominated for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic at its James Beard Awards, which recognize the best chefs in the U.S every year.

Fellow Mexican Cristina Martinez of South Philly Barbacoa was recognized with the award just last year and it catapulted her to national and global fame. Should Jimenez win, not only will Cantina see the bene ts, but also its entire surrounding neighborhood, which is in dire need of some good attention for once. at’s already started with articles like this and many more that are sure to come, but Jimenez’s hope is that the attention brings more than just press coverage.

“With the voice of food, with the voice of Cantina, things will begin to change,” he said. z

Hace poco más de dos años, la parada Somerset El, en Kensington, y su barrio circundante se convirtieron en el rostro de los efectos negativos de la pandemia del COVID-19, ya que SEPTA cerró la estación para reparar sus dos ascensores dañados por agujas desechadas, basura y orina.

Para los residentes, el cierre fue un ejemplo más de cómo los dirigentes de la ciudad los ignoraron y aislaron durante mucho tiempo, obligándolos a desplazarse a Allegheny o Huntington para tomar un tren que les llevara al trabajo o a cualquier otro lugar, y con muy poca antelación.

Es un relato que se repite con demasiada frecuencia en el barrio, que también se ha

convertido en la zona cero de la batalla estadounidense contra la adicción a los opiáceos, aunque no es el único que existe allí.

UN PUNTO POSITIVO EN SOMERSET

Han pasado dos años desde el cierre temporal, y los problemas persisten visiblemente, pero ahora también hay un punto positivo para todos los que se bajan en Somerset.

Los antes apagados paneles de madera gris mate de un bar cerrado hace tiempo en la esquina ahora son amarillo brillante con un ribete azul. A la izquierda de la entrada, a la vuelta de la esquina, hay también una colorida obra de arte en ladrillo, con una mujer ataviada con una llamativa máscara del Día de los Muertos como pieza central, que

ofrece una pista de lo que cabe esperar tras las ventanas de cristal con botellas de Coca-Cola que se conservan de la versión anterior del edi cio.

En lo alto de la entrada, cuelga el nuevo nombre de este refugio: Cantina La Martina.

Es la creación y el primer restaurante del chef mexicano Dionicio Jiménez, nalista del premio James Beard 2023 al Mejor Chef del Atlántico Medio. El reconocimiento no es solo por los giros auténticos y creativos que da a los platos mexicanos tradicionales de su infancia y de otros lugares, sino también por lo que aporta a la comunidad circundante en términos culinarios y culturales.

“Nadie habla de las familias, solo de las drogas y de la delincuencia de Kensington”, a rma el empresario. A ellos va dirigido el primer restaurante de Jiménez, que lleva 24 años gestándose.

APRENDIENDO A COCINAR EN SECRETO

Como la mayoría de la comunidad mexicana del sur de Filadel a, Jiménez es natural de San Mateo Ozolco, en Puebla (México). Allí, y desde muy temprana edad, puede recordar que la comida siempre formó parte integral de la vida: “Todas las mesas compartidas hacían de los días algo especial”. Ya fuera el desayuno, el almuerzo, la cena o una esta, la comida era lo que reunía a la familia para pasar el tiempo.

“Es una reconciliación”, dijo Jiménez sobre el poder de la comida para unir a la gente.

Era su abuela la que dirigía la cocina en las grandes reuniones, pero, más allá de ella, su madre y sus tías eran las jefas de la cocina familiar y de quienes el joven Dionicio recibiría sus primeras lecciones culinarias.

Observaba cómo preparaban michmole o mole poblano para celebraciones como Semana Santa, y nopales, salsa, tortillas frescas o frijoles cualquier día normal. A veces, Jiménez ayudaba trayendo ingredientes del huerto o de cualquier otra forma que pudiera estar en la cocina, sin enfrentarse al desprecio,

pues, en aquella época, la preparación de la comida seguía siendo tarea de mujeres.

Aun así, Jiménez encontró la manera de aprender las mejores prácticas de su madre y sus tías: “Cada vez que aprendía, lo hacía a escondidas”, le contó a AL DÍA.

Aprendió el “respeto que uno le da a la comida” de su familia, pero también de las otras familias a las que se uniría en las cocinas de México y Filadel a.

“Es como un ritual”, describió Jiménez la preparación de un plato. Advirtió que “no es solo juntar todo y cocinar, sino respetar cada parte individual de un plato”.

El mejor ejemplo que tiene de ello viene desde pequeño, cuando veía a su madre y a sus tías preparar mole. Su proceso duraba días, desde recoger los chiles hasta molerlos, asarlos y nalmente incorporarlos al plato al tercer o cuarto día.

DE COCINERO A FRIEGAPLATOS Y VICEVERSA

El trabajo de Jiménez empezó a los 10 años, en diversos trabajos esporádicos en obras de construcción y similares, pero fue su labor en restaurantes lo que lo marcó. A los 14, empezó como friegaplatos y, con los años, fue ascendiendo de ayudante de camarero a chef ejecutivo en México.

Siempre dispuesto a aprender, Jiménez cali có el viaje como una buena experiencia porque “empecé a aprender cosas diferentes y a conocer a gente diferente”.

Fue un viaje que tendría que repetir al llegar a Filadel a en 1998. Allí, aparte del frío y de la barrera del idioma (“En el 98, era difícil encontrar a alguien que hablara español”), Jiménez volvía a lavar platos en ChinChin, un restaurante de Center City, además de trabajar por las noches en Vetri Cucina.

Al principio, la nueva realidad le dejó un mal sabor de boca sobre Filadel a, dada su experiencia previa en la cocina, pero le ayudó a convertirse de nuevo en una esponja para aprender todo lo posible y ascender en el escalafón: “Cuando llegué, no lo veía. Pero ahora merece la pena”, dijo.

Fueron mis mentores y todos los que se han cruzado en mi camino me han enseñado algo diferente a partir de sus propias experiencias.

Sus nuevos trabajos le pusieron en contacto con algunos de los mejores de Filadel a como Philippe Chin, Marc Vetri, Je Benjamin, Michael Solomonov y, nalmente, Stephen Starr. Más allá de los líderes, Jiménez dijo que también aprendería de todos aquellos con los que trabajó en la cocina: “Fueron mis mentores, y todos los que se han cruzado en mi camino me han enseñado algo diferente a partir de sus propias experiencias”, a rmó.

Una vez más, ascendió de lavaplatos a cocinero de preparación, a cocinero de línea, a jefe de estación, a jefe de cocina —primero en Xochitl, en el 2007— y, luego, a chef ejecutivo —en Starr’s El Vez, en el 2015.

UNA PLEGARIA PANDÉMICA ATENDIDA

En el camino, siempre soñó con tener un lugar propio. “Todos los chefs quieren tener su

propio restaurante”, señaló. Su sueño siempre había ido por delante de Cantina La Martina.

En Xochitl, la experiencia fue como un curso intensivo para aprender a dirigir una cocina de forma e caz. El Vez fue similar, pero con mucho trabajo.

Durante la pandemia, Jiménez pensó que tendría que dejar morir su sueño, pero su viejo amigo Edgar Ramírez, de Philatinos Radio, lo contactó con un prestamista que le ayudó a conseguir el dinero para adquirir la ubicación actual del restaurante.

EL CAMBIO QUE MERECE KENSINGTON

“Sé que quiero cumplir mi sueño, pero...” fue lo primero que pensó Jiménez al ver en qué parte de Kensington se ubicaría su nuevo restaurante durante un tour de verano: en el corazón del barrio, bajo el Somerset El.

También recordó haber visto las tiendas de campaña a ambos lados de la calle donde vivía la gente y el diario sufrimiento humano.

Sus amigos también se apresuraron a intentar disuadirle de abrir bajo el Somerset El. “No lo hagas, no cojas este sitio. Es feo”, recordó Jiménez que le decían.

Casi funcionó, hasta que un día de otoño Jiménez llegó temprano a la ubicación y vio la cantidad de jóvenes del barrio de los alrededores que viajan a la escuela todos los días en el tren. Esa imagen cambió su perspectiva: “Siempre nos centramos en lo negativo cuando se trata de Kensington. Sí, hay una mala reputación de drogas y delincuencia, pero, aparte de eso, hay familias, niños y gente inocente. Nadie ve esto”.

Cantina La Martina abrió o cialmente sus puertas en febrero del 2022. Debe su nombre a la canción “La Martina” de Antonio Aguilar, ‘El Charro de México’, y a una película del mismo nombre. Ambas han seguido a Jiménez durante la mayor parte de su vida.

En poco más de un año, Cantina La Martina no solo se ha convertido en uno de los locales favoritos de los vecinos, sino de toda la ciudad. Cada día, más y más comensales curiosos se dirigen al restaurante a través del metro u otros medios de transporte.

La Fundación James Beard nominó a Jiménez Mejor Chef del Atlántico Medio en los Premios James Beard 2023, que reconocen cada año a los mejores chefs de Estados Unidos.

Su compatriota mexicana Cristina Martínez, de South Philly Barbacoa, fue galardo-

nada con este premio el año pasado, lo que la catapultó a la fama nacional y mundial. Si Jiménez gana, no solo se bene ciará Cantina, sino también todo el barrio que la rodea, que, por una vez, necesita atención.

Eso ya ha empezado con artículos como este y muchos más que seguro vendrán, pero la esperanza de Jiménez es que la atención traiga algo más que cobertura de prensa: “Con la voz de la comida, con la voz de Cantina, las cosas empezarán a cambiar”. z

In a quiet place, full of green spaces and boulevards, located 80 kilometers from La Pampa, Laura Citarella found the ideal location to shoot a story told in twelve chapters and exhibited in two parts.

e Argentine director also has family ties in Trenque Lauquen, although she acknowledges that it was not this sentimental factor that connected her to this land, to the point of naming her fourth feature lm.

“I had already shot a short lm called Tres juntos in Trenque Lauquen and I wanted to shoot there again. First, I knew I was going to have to spend a lot of time there and I always wanted to make a portrait lm of that town. It’s a very cinematographic place, with locations that invite ction. And because it is a small town, where everything is so visible, unlike the cities where things happen in anonymity, I feel that these are spaces where secrecy is very common and is everywhere,” said the lmmaker in conversation with AL DÍA

It is precisely that intrigue and enigma that play a key role in this lm by Citarella, produced in six years and starring actress Laura Paredes. In the lm, she plays Laura, a biologist who suddenly disappears without a trace. Her partner and a driver —with whom she used to work— try to nd her. e improvised detective work and the love for the same woman unite the two men who get to know each other almost by force; but as they try to uncover clues, they only face unanswered questions.

A VERSATILE FIGURE

Trenque Lauquen, which in the Mapuche language means round lagoon, is part of a series of lms focused on the same character. e rst installment was Ostende (2011), which followed Laura as she, as an eavesdropper, listened to the anecdotes of visitors at a seaside hotel in Buenos Aires province. In this new lm, Laura embodies mystery itself.

“(Laura) is a curious, foreign character, who observes with distance and closeness. at allows one to shoot a lot of ctional procedures. She is a character who is stimulated by what she sees, what she hears, and that makes it possible to build ction with those elements and to nd mysteries in places where one thinks they are not. is character facilitates a form of cinema that interests us. On this path, we decided to keep trying these things and make another lm where we answer everything we couldn’t answer in the previous one,” said Citarella.

Between suspense, drama and romance, the feature lm also looks at the logic used by women and men in certain situations, such as the exploration of freedom and a disappearance. “ e lm generates a lot of empathy and, at a moment when it stops looking for explanations and becomes silent and the lm begins to trust, to have more faith in the pure image, in the landscape and the photographic, people feel uncomfortable and ask themselves: but what is going on? And it is a totally patriarchal way and men are a bit victim of that. In the lm, men are worked with little understanding, they are characters who feel,” he added.

IN THE UNITED STATES

Awarded as Best Latin American Film at Mar del Plata International Film Festival and acclaimed at festivals in Venice, San Sebastian and New York, Trenque Lauquen premiered on April 21st at the Film at Lincoln Center in New York. Special screenings in California and Minnesota will follow.z

En un paraje tranquilo, lleno de espacios verdes y bulevares, situado a 80 kilómetros de La Pampa, Laura Citarella encontró la locación ideal para rodar una historia narrada a lo largo de doce capítulos y exhibida en dos partes.

Y es que en Trenque Lauquen la directora argentina mantiene también lazos familiares; aunque reconoce que no fue ese factor sentimental el que la conectó con esa tierra, a tal punto de dar nombre a su cuarto largometraje.

“Ya había lmado un corto, que se llama Tres Juntos en Trenque Lauquen y yo tenía ganas de lmar nuevamente ahí. Primero sabía que iba a tener que pasar mucho tiempo ahí y siempre quise hacer una película retrato de ese pueblo. Es un lugar muy cinematográco, tiene locaciones que invitan a la cción. Y como es un pueblo chico de donde todo está tan a la vista, no como las ciudades donde las cosas transcurren más bien en el anonimato, siento que son espacios donde el secreto es muy frecuente y está en todas partes”, dijo la cineasta en conversación con AL DÍA.

Es justamente esa intriga y ese enigma los que juegan un papel clave en esta película de Citarella, producida en seis años y protagonizada por la actriz Laura Paredes. En la cción, ella da vida a Laura: una bióloga que desaparece, de repente, sin dejar rastros. Su pareja y un chofer -con quien ella trabajaba- se esfuerzan para encontrarla. La improvisada tarea de detectives y el amor hacia una misma mujer unen a ambos hombres que se van conociendo casi forzosamente. Pero mientras intentan revelar pistas, solo se enfrentan a preguntas sin respuestas.

UNA FIGURA VERSÁTIL

Trenque Lauquen, que en idioma mapuche signi ca ‘Laguna redonda’, es parte de una serie de películas enfocadas en el mismo personaje. La primera entrega fue Ostende (2011), que siguió a Laura mientras ella, como sgona, escuchaba las anécdotas de los visitantes en un hotel al lado del mar en la provincia de Buenos Aires. En esta nueva cinta, Laura encarna el mismísimo misterio.

“Es un personaje curioso, extranjero, que observa con distancia y cercanía. Eso permite que una pueda disparar un montón de procedimientos de cción.Es un personaje que está estimulado por lo que ve, lo que oye y eso hace que con esos elementos se pueda construir cción y se puedan encontrar también misterios en lugares donde uno cree que no están. Este personaje facilita una forma del cine que nos interesa. En ese camino nos pasó seguir probando esas cosas y hacer otra película donde respondemos todo lo que no pudimos responder en la anterior”, indicó Citarella. Entre el suspenso, el drama y el romance, el largometraje plantea también una mirada a la lógica empleada por la mujer y el hombre ante ciertas situaciones de la vida, como la exploración de la libertad y una desaparición. “La película genera mucha empatía y en un momento, cuando deja de buscar explicaciones y se silencia, empieza a con ar, como a tener más fe en la imagen pura, en lo paisajístico. Y la gente se siente incómoda y se pregunta: ¿pero qué pasa? Es un modo totalmente patriarcal y los hombres son un poco víctimas de eso. En la película, los hombres están trabajados con un poco de comprensión, son personajes que sienten”, agregó.

Ganadora del premio como Mejor Película Latinoamericana en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata y aclamada en festivales de Venecia, San Sebastián y Nueva York, Trenque Lauquen se estrenó el 21 de abril en el Film en Lincoln Center en Nueva York. WHEN WRITING BECOMES A SANCTUARY

IN HER BOOKS, FRANCESCA FLORES MIXES HER PASSION FOR LATIN AMERICAN HISTORY WITH FANTASY ELEMENTS. CON ORÍGENES EN COLOMBIA, LA ESCRITORA FRANCESCA FLORES MEZCLA SU PASIÓN POR LA HISTORIA LATINOAMERICANA CON ELEMENTOS DE LA FANTASÍA.

Francesca Flores was born in Pittsburg to a Colombian father and a white American mother. “Growing up, it was o en hard to meet other Latinos, since my neighborhood and school didn’t have many. But I always tried to connect with people and speak Spanish as much as possible,” she recalled in a recent interview with AL DÍA.

Flores is today a promising linguist and author of youth fantasy novels starring Latina teenagers, in a sort of homage to her Latin American roots, even though she was raised mostly by her mother.

“I never thought I’d become a published author. I didn’t realize it was an actual career I could have, since I knew nothing about how publishing worked or how to get involved in it,” she admitted.

As she explains in her blog, Flores lived in two worlds growing up. One world was the private school she attended on scholarship. e second one was her local community in Pittsburg, where most of his friends got more wrapped into poverty, gangs, drugs, “and many other problems they shouldn’t have to deal with as teenagers.”

“Writing anchored me in both worlds, and was something I could do on the bus between work and school, or at night once I nished homework,” she wrote.

A er graduating, Flores moved across the country to San Francisco for undergrad, studying International Relations and Linguistics. ere, she discovered the website Wattpad, “which gave me an avenue to connect with other writers, and some of them became very good friends. ese friends started pursuing publishing more seriously, and it was like a lightbulb went o in my head,” she recalled.

LEARNING FROM EXPERIENCE

Her debut novel, Diamond City (St. Martin’s Press, 2020), stars a Latina teenager, Aina Solís, who lost her parents, takes a job as an assassin to survive and nds a new family in those like her: the unwanted and forgotten.

“ e message I wanted readers to take away was how to still be proud and feel brave a er surviving di cult or humbling circumstances. I want readers who’ve grown up without much money to not feel shame in that fact, and to realize the strength they’ve learned from their experiences,” she explained. “I also wanted readers, especially

Flores es hoy una prometedora lingüista y autora de novelas juveniles protagonizadas por adolescentes latinas, en una especie de homenaje a sus raíces latinoamericanas, aunque fue criada mayoritariamente por su madre.

“Nunca pensé que llegaría a ser autora publicada. No sabía que podía dedicarme a ello, porque no sabía nada de nada de cómo funcionaba el mundo editorial ni de cómo ser parte de él”, admite.

Como explica en su blog, Flores creció entre dos mundos. Uno era la escuela privada donde estudiaba gracias a una beca. El segundo era su comunidad local de Pittsburg, donde la mayoría de sus amigos vivían envueltos en la pobreza, las bandas, las drogas “y muchos otros problemas con los que un adolescente no debería tener que lidiar”.

“Escribir me anclaba en ambos mundos, y era algo que podía hacer en el autobús entre el trabajo y la escuela, o por la noche una vez terminados los deberes”, escribe.

Al terminar el instituto, Flores cruzó el país para estudiar Relaciones Internacionales y Lingüística en San Francisco. Allí descubrió el sitio web Wattpad, “que me dio una vía para conectar con otros escritores, y algunos de ellos se hicieron muy buenos amigos. Estos amigos empezaron a publicar más en serio, y fue así como vi la luz”, recuerda.

APRENDER DE LA EXPERIENCIA

Su novela de debut, Diamond City (St. Martin’s Press, 2020), está protagonizada por una adolescente latina, Aina Solís, que perdió a sus padres y acepta un trabajo como asesina para sobrevivir y encuentra una nueva familia en la que sus integrantes son como ella: los no deseados y olvidados.

“El mensaje que quería que se llevaran los lectores era cómo seguir estando orgullosos y sentirse valientes después de sobrevivir a circunstancias difíciles o humillantes. Quiero que los lectores que han crecido sin mucho dinero no sientan vergüenza por ello y se den cuenta de la fortaleza que han obtenido de sus experiencias”, explica.

“También quería -dice- que los lectores, especialmente los jóvenes, fueran capaces de reconocer las señales de una relación manipuladora a través de la lectura de la experiencia de Aina”.

young readers, to be able to recognize the signs of a manipulative relationship through reading Aina’s experience.”

Her latest book, e Witch and the Vampire (Saint Martin’s Press, 2023), is a queer Rapunzel retelling where a witch and a vampire who trust no one but themselves must journey together through a cursed forest with danger at every turn.

“My characters are usually Latinas, but since I write fantasy worlds, I try to make them my own as much as possible. I enjoy coming up with new worlds, languages, and histories, but my personal experience and knowledge always in uence my writing,” Flores explained. “I love learning Latin American history, and this usually comes through in my books, also with political and social dynamics, even if they are subtle. With my new book, I wanted to write a book full of things I loved. Vampires, forests and nature, elemental magic powers, and strong female friendship (that turns into romance, in this book).”

Flores’ decision to write for teenagers was accidental. “For a long time, I was just writing characters a few years younger than me, since I was close enough to their age to understand what they felt, yet distanced

enough that I had more perspective. So, at rst, I was simply defaulting to write for a young audience,” she admitted. But now she still chooses to write for teenagers and very young adults because of how tumultuous a time in life it can be. “It’s o en hard to see your own experiences re ected in media, and I believe every author who writes for young people should write their own, authentic experiences, because there will be readers who nd it and connect with it, and see themselves in media for the rst time to know that they’re not alone.”

Having experienced poverty and homelessness during her youth, Flores admitted that “writing somehow became her sanctuary. “When there was so little I could control in my life, writing was something I could control. I could control entire worlds on the page.”

“I love writing stories about young people who learn to come into their own power, rise above their circumstances, and grow from their experiences,” she said. “I hope that young readers who nd my books can feel seen and draw not only strength, but also reassurance, from their experiences,” she concluded.z

“Mis personajes suelen ser latinas, pero como escribo mundos fantásticos, intento hacerlos míos en la medida de lo posible. Disfruto inventando nuevos mundos, idiomas e historias, pero mi experiencia personal y mis conocimientos siempre in uyen en mi escritura”, explica Flores.

“Me encanta aprender historia latinoamericana, y eso suele aparecer en mis libros también con dinámicas políticas y sociales, aunque sean sutiles”, señala. Asimismo, mani esta que “con e Witch and the Vampire me propuse escribir un libro lleno de cosas que me gustaban: vampiros, bosques y naturaleza, poderes mágicos elementales y una fuerte amistad femenina (que se acaba convirtiendo en romance)”.

La decisión de Flores de dedicarse a la literatura juvenil fue accidental. “Durante mucho tiempo me limité a crear personajes solo unos años más jóvenes que yo. Estaba lo su cientemente cerca de su edad como para entender lo que sentían, pero lo su cientemente distanciada

como para tener más perspectiva”, admite. Ahora ha decidido seguir escribiendo para adolescentes y adultos jóvenes “por lo tumultuosa que puede ser esa etapa de la vida”.

Agrega que “a menudo es difícil ver tus propias experiencias re ejadas en los medios, y creo que todo autor que escriba para jóvenes debe escribir sus propias y auténticas experiencias, porque habrá lectores que conecten con ello, y se verán a sí mismos en los medios por primera vez y sabrán que no están solos”.

Tras haber experimentado la pobreza y la falta de hogar durante su juventud, Flores admite que “la escritura se convirtió de algún modo en su santuario”. Y continúa diciendo que “cuando había tan poco que podía controlar en mi vida, escribir era algo que sí podía controlar. Podía controlar mundos enteros en una página”.

Insiste en que le “encanta escribir historias sobre jóvenes que aprenden a asumir su propio poder, a elevarse por encima de sus circunstancias y a crecer a partir de sus experiencias”.

“Espero que los jóvenes lectores que se topen con mis libros puedan sentirse identi cados y sacar de sus experiencias no sólo fuerza, sino también consuelo”, concluyó. z

The Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) Board of Directors announced this month Jorge Elorza — former Providence, Rhode Island, mayor — as the new Chief Executive O cer (CEO) of the political advocacy organization.

“It’s my public service taking a di erent shi ,” Elorza said. “I see it as a continuation of the work that I’ve been doing for a long time.”

During the two terms that Elorza served as the Democratic mayor of Rhode Island’s largest city, he took actions to shi social and racial issues, and improve the city’s underperforming school system. He created the city’s Eat, Play, Learn Initiative to expand out-of-school enrichment, and launched the African American Ambassador Group to

bring Black leaders into the center of policymaking. Elorza’s e orts also made possible an investment of $400 million into repairing school buildings, and supporting the expansion of public charter schools.

Elorza just nished eight years in the role as mayor, and is now o cially committed to changing the narratives about education that have been in the media lately. While GOP worries about culture wars, Elorza highlights the work DFER is presenting real solutions for the challenges students and families face.

ROOTS AND CAREER

Elorza’s parents immigrated from Guatemala in the mid 1970s looking for opportunities. Because of its many textile and jewelry factories, Providence was a hot spot

“Es mi servicio público tomando un giro diferente”, dijo Elorza. “Lo veo como una continuación del trabajo que he venido haciendo durante mucho tiempo”, agregó.

Durante los dos mandatos que Elorza ejerció como alcalde demócrata de la ciudad más grande de Rhode Island, tomó medidas para dar un giro a los problemas sociales y raciales, y mejorar el de ciente sistema escolar de la ciudad. Creó la Iniciativa Comer, Jugar, Aprender, para ampliar el enriquecimiento extraescolar y puso en marcha el Grupo de Embajadores Afroamericanos, para situar a

for immigrants at the time — and where the Elorzas settled down. For the rst almost 13 years of Elorza’s life, his parents were undocumented and worked in the factories.

ey quali ed for citizenship during the Reagan’s administration amnesty, becoming citizens in the mid 1980s — which changed their lives forever. Elorza remembers how the new status allowed them to get new and better jobs, with minimum age and healthcare bene ts.

Even though Elorza was never a model kid, as he described himself, his parents always emphasized education. In high school, he found out he was graduating a week prior to the ceremony; and while his friends were celebrating their acceptances into college, he had been rejected from every single one he had applied to. Confused about what to do, but dreaming about achieving greater things, he decided to enroll in the Community College of Rhode Island.

A er a year, he got accepted to a Talent Development (TD) program at the University of Rhode Island (URI), an opportunity that shi ed his relationship with education forever as went from barely graduating high school to graduating rst in his class at URI.

Elorza moved to New York City a er earning his degree to work for a well paid and successful job. However, as plans never go as we expect, one of Elorza’s best friends from his old neighborhood in Providence was murdered in 1999.

“I remember that really hitting me,” he said. “ at night I decided that I would quit my job in New York and go back to Providence; I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, but I knew I wanted to serve my community somehow.”

New — and unbelievable for high school Elorza — doors were open, as he earned a law degree from Harvard University. Back to Providence, he served in a variety of positions, from attorney to professor and housing court judge until becoming the mayor, in 2015. Although wanting nothing to do with politics, Elorza understood the positive impact he could have in the community.

“I loved every second of it,” he added. “I feel very proud of everything we were able to do.”

PUBLIC EDUCATION

Although Elorza believes there are efforts being made to improve, he thinks that children aren’t being served well by the tra-

ditional public schools systems. He personally grew up with people who had potential to do better, but the lack of opportunities didn’t let them to achieve so.

“Now I see their kids being misserved or underserved by the exact same schools,” Elorza added.

Part of his job’s challenge is to gure out how to bring a sense of urgency to the work that’s being done. He appreciates seeing education play a more prominent role in the media lately, but gets frustrated by the headlines it’s being known for. Culture wars and distracting kinds of issues that Republicans have been exploiting were some of the concerns Elorza highlighted.

“In the world that we live in right now where there are so many distractions and so many issues that capture people’s attention,” he said. “It is a major challenge to make sure that we keep them always focused on what’s best for the children and schools.”

To ensure that education remains at the top of the agenda, DFER focuses on evidence-based practices that are going to improve students’ lives — and Elorza likes to make a clear di erence between their approach and the Republican one.

“In this age, with Republicans ghting their cultural wars, they are talking about banning books; when the conversation should be about teaching kids to read books.” z

Colombian-American R&B singer Kali Uchis will be at The Met on May 6 as part of the tour for her newest album Red Moon In Venus. In a recent press release, Uchis said “[the album] is a timeless, burning expression of desire, heartbreak, faith, and honesty, re ecting the divine femininity of the moon and Venus.” She noted: “This body of work represents all levels of love — releasing people with love, drawing love into your life and self-love.”

“I make so many different genres. And obviously, singing between two languages, I didn’t want to limit myself. I ended up basically working on these two projects around the same time,” she said.

“For us the live show was very important. More than the record,” he said, noting they give 110% on stage for every show.

In 2001, the U.S. Department of State invited Sampson to hold a series of lectures across institutions in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, conducting constructive conversations and promoting tolerance among nations.

More recently, Sampson worked with the Embassy of the UAE and members of the House of Representatives to create a pre-clearance facility in Abu Dhabi for U.S. Customs and Border Protection to allow passengers traveling to the U.S. to undergo all necessary procedures before arrival.

“Being able to utilize that international experience to try to make Philadelphia and the Commonwealth a better place; that’s what I want to do with this real estate commission,” Sampson said in an interview with AL DÍA.

OPENING AVENUES

Leveraging his position as Commissioner, Sampson has begun encouraging the predominantly Black universities of Lincoln and Cheyney to adopt real estate courses. Sampson has seen that while universities like Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania have real estate courses, there are no such avenues in these predominantly Black universities.

“I’ve written a letter to the presidents of Lincoln and Cheyney… encouraging them to have a real estate school or institute that will cater to Black and Brown students; African Americans, Latino Americans,” Sampson said.

“ ey need to be able to get to these doors of generational wealth,” he concluded. z

It is no secret that Latin America’s relations with the United States have been unequal. Always. Support for dictatorships, invasions, overthrow of presidents, trade inequity, undue pressures…

On April 20th, presidents Gustavo Petro and Joe Biden met at the White House with a notorious change in the bilateral agenda, which has been brewing since Petro assumed the Presidency of Colombia eight months ago, amidst the expectation of being the rst government with le -wing origins in that country.

Beyond the photos, the meeting has a transcendental backdrop, not only because of Colombia’s position, but also because of its signi cance for Latin America.

Colombia returned to multilateralism and a new way of relating with the United States, prioritized by the ght against drugs for more than three decades, was set in motion. e ‘architect’ of the change in relations has been Luis Gilberto Murillo, Colombia’s ambassador to the United States. He is the rst Afro-Colombian to hold this position, so important in Colombian politics that it has been the steppingstone for several Colombian presidents.

Murillo is an engineer, environmental expert, human rights advocate and spokesman for millions of historically excluded Colombians. As ambassador, he recovered the battered relations with the United States, seriously a ected during the government of Iván Duque (2018-2022) for openly supporting Donald Trump’s candidacy from the governing party, violating the principle of not intervening in domestic politics.

e ambassador has an excellent dialogue with representatives of the entire political and business spectrum in the United States, without exclusions. From that point of view, he has openly stated the failure of the anti-drug policy promoted by the United States in Colombia. Now what they are seeking to change is to directly attack the business, not to end the cultivation of illicit crops by fumigating them with glyphosate (a poison) and for the State to have an e ective presence in the territories where the coca leaf is grown, safeguarding the farmers who have been forcibly linked to the transnational drug tra cking business.

e revision of the Free Trade Agreement has also been proposed, to make it equitable, adjust it to the new market realities and reduce the gap in the trade balance.

On the other hand, the United States was invited to support Colombia’s total peace policy, as it did in the negotiations with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which led to the signing of the Peace Agreement in 2016.

In his diplomatic management, Murillo prioritizes Colombia’s cultural, ethnic and environmental diversity and inclusion as factors in developing the agenda with the United States, which has been a two-way street, considering common interests and di erences.

It has meant, among other things, connecting Colombian cities with U.S. cities to bring them closer in common projects, as well as small and medium-sized entrepreneurs, previously ignored when the exchange was reserved for big capital. Just last April 24th, a trade fair was held in Washington with 60 Colombian entrepreneurs interested in accessing the U.S. market, through companies of the same sectors and sizes interested in Colombian products.

Murillo has facilitated meetings between senior o cials of both governments on issues of justice, defense, economy, education, peace, climate change... And he is making progress on proposals to address the migration phenomenon. e agenda also includes issues of sustainable development, ports, tourism and renewable energies.

In addition to this, Colombia is concerned about peace in the region, which is why it is leading the frank dialogue between the Venezuelan Government and the opposition, as well as the li ing of the sanctions imposed by the United States. is is the opposite of what happened during the Duque administration, which supported isolating Venezuela from the international context.

Likewise, Colombia has regained international leadership in environmental matters, with climate change as a priority. For this reason, Ambassador Murillo has put it on the table to have a partner in the United States in the energy transition and other measures to save the planet. At the April 20th meeting, Biden agreed with Petro’s proposal to pay foreign debt in exchange for actions against the climate crisis and will present it to the International Monetary Fund. He also pledged $500 million for an Amazon protection fund being promoted by Brazil.

It may seem a subtle di erence, but the truth is that now Colombia and the United States are not allies. ey are strategic partners, which means changes in the bilateral agenda and the breaking of the imbalance in the relationship.z

El 20 de abril se encontraron los presidentes Gustavo Petro y Joe Biden en la Casa Blanca con una cambio notorio en la agenda bilateral, que se ha venido gestando desde que Petro asumió la Presidencia de Colombia hace ocho meses, en medio de la expectativa por ser el primer gobierno con orígenes en la izquierda en ese país. Más allá de las fotos, la reunión tiene un telón de fondo trascendental, no solo por la postura de Colombia, sino por el signi cado para América Latina.

Colombia volvió al multilateralismo y se puso en marcha una nueva forma de relacionarse con Estados Unidos, priorizada por la lucha antidrogas en más de tres décadas. El ‘arquitecto’ del cambio en la relaciones ha sido Luis Gilberto Murillo, el embajador de Colombia en Estados Unidos. Es el primer afrocolombiano que ocupa ese cargo, tan importante en la política colombiana que ha sido el escalón previo para un importante número de presidentes colombianos.

Murillo es ingeniero, experto en temas ambientales, defensor de derechos humanos y vocero de millones de colombianos históricamente excluidos. Como embajador, recuperó las maltrechas relaciones con Estados Unidos, afectadas seriamente durante el gobierno de Iván Duque (2018-2022) por apoyar abiertamente desde el partido de gobierno la candidatura de Donald Trump, violentando el principio de no intervenir en la política interna.

El embajador tiene excelente interlocución con representantes de todo el espectro político y gremial en Estados Unidos, sin exclusiones. Desde esa visión, ha planteado abiertamente el fracaso de la política antidrogas promovida por Estados Unidos en Colombia. Ahora lo que se busca cambiar es que se ataque directamente el negocio, no acabar los cultivos de uso ilícito fumigándolos con glifosato (un veneno) y que el Estado tenga una presencia efectiva en los territorios donde se cultiva la hoja de coca, salvaguardando a los campesinos que han sido vinculados a la fuerza al negocio transnacional del narcotrá co.

Se ha planteado también la revisión del Tratado de Libre Comercio, para que sea equitativo, se ajuste a la nuevas realidades

del mercado y se disminuya la brecha en la balanza comercial.

Por otro lado, se invitó a Estados Unidos a apoyar la política de paz total de Colombia, como lo hizo en las negociaciones con las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), que llevaron a la rma del Acuerdo de Paz en el 2016.

En su gestión diplomática, Murillo prioriza la diversidad cultural, étnica y ambiental de Colombia y la inclusión como factores para desarrollar la agenda con Estados Unidos, que se ha tratado en doble vía, teniendo en cuenta los intereses comunes y las diferencias.

Ha signi cado, entre otras cosas, conectar a ciudades colombianas con estadounidenses para acercarlas en proyectos comunes, como también a pequeños y medianos empresarios, ignorados antes cuando se reservaba el intercambio al gran capital. No más el pasado 24 de abril se realizó en Washington una feria comercial con 60 empresarios colombianos interesados en acceder al mercado de los Estados Unidos, a través de empresas de los mismos sectores y tamaños interesadas en productos colombianos.

Murillo ha propiciado encuentros entre altos funcionarios de ambos gobiernos en temas de justicia, defensa, economía, educación, paz, cambio climático… Y avanza en propuestas para atender el fenómeno migratorio. La agenda incluye también temas de desarrollo sostenible, puertos, turismo y energías renovables.

A esto se suma la preocupación de Colombia por la paz en la región, por lo que lidera el diálogo franco entre el gobierno de Venezuela y la oposición, así como el levantamiento de las sanciones impuestas por Estados Unidos. Es algo opuesto a lo ocurrido durante el gobierno de Duque, que apoyó aislar a Venezuela del contexto internacional.

Asimismo, Colombia ha recuperado el liderazgo internacional en lo ambiental, con el cambio climático como prioridad. Por eso, el embajador Murillo lo ha puesto sobre la mesa para tener en Estados Unidos un socio en la transición energética y en otras medidas que salven al planeta. En la reunión del 20 de abril, Biden estuvo de acuerdo con la propuesta de Petro de pagar deuda externa a cambio de acciones contra la crisis climática y se la presentará al Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI). También se comprometió con 500 millones dólares para un fondo de protección de la Amazonía que impulsa Brasil.

Puede resultar una diferencia sutil, pero la verdad es que ahora Colombia y Estados Unidos no son aliados. Son socios estratégicos, signi cando cambios en la agenda bilateral y el rompimiento del desequilibrio en la relación. z

Today feels as if we were back in 2002 when we rst thought of a simple idea that —as all the ideas that led later to tangible realities throughout AL DÍA’s evolution— was made possible by resolve and discipline.

e simple idea was bring by the thousands to downtown Philadelphia members of the Hispanic community, then isolated in our neighborhoods, to meet the larger employers of our city at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, in the heart of Center City.

Over 20 years, this city has evidently progressed: Today, 2023, the Hispanic community is gradually becoming a quarter of the city’s population, from the 6.8% it was when we founded AL DÍA in 1994.

is city’s population has become, under the in uence of the new residents, one of the most diverse cities in the country, thanks to immigrants coming from neighboring states, from Central and South America, and also from all over the world.

Not a single racial group is majority anymore in Philadelphia, as the U.S. Census found out in 2020.

In its third century of its existence, the city of Philadelphia is a wonderful mosaic of all the races and ethnicities, creatures of God that arrived here from all our planet.

ey are now congregated here to make our city a hub of diverse labor in volumes Philadelphia had not seen in the past 341 years of its existence— and today is not aware of and/ or has not yet taken full advantage of.

As we prepare ourselves for the 250 anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, and remember our humble origins and envision our common destiny, we can say we can see the promised land from here, the vantage point of 2023.

A land where all the races and ethnicities, fully included, and working together, can ful ll the promise our founding fathers passed down to us of bringing us all together, the Pluribus Unum (“out of many, one”, in Latin) of our national Great Seal, and propel our beloved city forward into the 21st Century to produce the miracle of a true Philadelphia Renaissance.

To bring everybody else in this Diverse City —and that is why we call it the “AL DIA DiverseCity Career Fair”— to the opportunities for the best paying jobs in our city.

And, in the process, give Philadelphia a chance to become a modern and prosperous urban center on the Eastern Seaboard of our nation. Better to live in to raise a family than Boston or Baltimore, more a ordable and better organized than New York, with way a richer and nobler history than Washington D.C., and a permanent destination for tourists from all over the world, and eventually temporary residents who may choose to prolong their stay here, as was the case for my now departed wife and me.

is is not anymore about Equal Employment Opportunity or the Equity and Inclusion Policy delegated to a lower rank Diversity Ocer. It is an urgent necessity of our times, indeed and emergency and actual crisis; but as all crises, in the hands of enlightened and creative leaders, is also once-in-a-century opportunity. Genuine CEOs can’t shy away from this core duty of the high o ce entrusted to them, as few of them, to their credit, are beginning to do it.

e race for competitiveness in the 21st century is on, and we can’t a ord to squander our best resources: our very diverse people already here.

We need to bring them from the front lines of labor to the middle and top executive o ces, the c-suite and, ultimately, to the board room.

ere is only one obstacle we all must honestly acknowledge and call out— loud but sincerely:

Our city is still one the most segregated in the country across all its neighborhoods, and along the invisible walls of racial division the new and diverse labor force of our new residents is yet to be fully included proportionally on the payrolls of our main corporations, public institutions, and government o ces.

20 years ago, AL DÍA dared to imagine a modest gathering that would expose the top employers in our city to the Hispanic segment, the fastest growing over the past 30 years.

Today we need to dare something bolder:

To achieve that we need rst to bring the children of those who were rst-generation immigrants yesterday, but today are the new and promising Americans, born, raised and educated here, to contribute to the city’s economic and cultural fabric.

We need everybody’s participation to take this bolder and yet simple step forward.

All the CEOs of this town, and the top executives of our City and State government, need to make a commitment —the ful llment of their responsibility as top leaders of their organizations— that paradoxically, in the long run, will bene t these corporations and those govern-
