An editorial discusses the legal process against Fox News. “The recent agreement between the company Dominion Voting Systems and the powerful news network Fox News, in the United States, sets an important precedent for the defense of the truth in the face of the repeated broadcasting of lies, in this case about the alleged electoral fraud in the past presidential elections. Fox, which reaches more than 75 million people, including the most radical sectors of the Republican Party, must pay 787.5 million dollars to Dominion for defamation. Fox, que llega a más de 75 millones de personas, incluyendo los sectores más radicales del Partido Republicano, deberá pagar US$787,5 millones a Dominion por difamación. Con este arreglo, la cadena evitó que sus altos directivos y presentadores tuvieran que contar en el juicio todo lo que hicieron tras bastidores. (…) Se cierra así un primer capítulo sobre un tema que generó preocupación no solo en los medios, sino entre quienes buscan que los estándares mínimos del buen periodismo, basados en la emisión o publicación de hechos ciertos y comprobados, sean la constante y no la excepción. A año y medio de la elección presidencial queda tiempo suficiente para que la atmósfera política se vicie mucho más de lo que ya lo está, con el factor añadido de que cuando llegue el gran día el expresidente tendrá 78 años y Joe Biden estará a dos semanas de cumplir los 82, edades más propias de una serena jubilación que de la brega partidista a cara de perro. Prever tal futuro no tiene nada de adivinanza (…). Algunos analistas interpretan la disposición de Fox News a pagar esa cantidad astronómica para seguir disponiendo de un espacio propio al servicio de las campañas de intoxicación de la opinión pública diseñadas por Trump y sus asesores”.

Gina Montaner analyzes how the presence of very old people is reflected in US politics, regarding a commentary by Gail Collins in The New York Times: “(...) the US Census estimates that in 2060 the number of people over 85 years old will have tripled compared to 2017. (...) Collins wonders what it means in the political arena that people who in the past would have already passed away or would be enjoying retirement are still active (...) Biden is 80 years old and if he were reelected he would finish his second term at 86. (...) he is the oldest president who occupied the White House. The second place is held by former President Donald Trump, who at 76 years of age is bidding to be the nominee in the Republican primaries. (...) It has been Nikki Haley, (...) ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump administration, who has recently proposed that from the age of 75 politicians should undergo tests of mental and cognitive competence”.

(…) después de que el presidente español haya buscado este encuentro desde el día que llegó a la Moncloa. Hace dos años, lo que se anunció como una reunión formal en Bruselas se convirtió en poco más de un saludo en los pasillos de la sede de la OTAN. Pero las cosas no ocurren porque sí. En este tiempo, la política exterior española se ha acercado a las tesis de Washington en asuntos delicados, como la relación con Marruecos y el cambio de postura sobre el Sáhara. Igualmente, el viaje a Pekín para reunirse con el presidente Xi Jinping, con la guerra de Ucrania como paisaje de fondo, fue consensuado con la Casa Blanca. Y por si fuera poco, el hecho de que España ocupe la presidencia de turno del Consejo de la UE el 1 de julio supone otro elemento relevante, pues se abordarán el cambio climático, la cooperación con Latinoamérica o la seguridad europea, cuestiones a las que EE. UU. no es ajeno”.
