With the heightened emphasis placed on Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) globally in recent years, ESG awareness is more essential now than ever. Being one of the key pillars under the ESG umbrella, Governance is closely tied to the fight against corruption.
Under Transparency International’s (“TI”) 2022 Corruption Perception Index which ranks nations by corruption levels globally, Malaysia has dropped -1 points and is currently ranked 61 out of 180. This appears as a step backward and TI highlights Malaysia as being a nation that has been on the decline in tackling corruption-related matters and calls on Governments to amongst others, prioritize anti-corruption commitments and reinforce checks and balances to make rid of corruption and the instability brought along with it.
What are the main principles of good Governance? The United Nation (“UN”) identifies 8 core principles identified with a nation’s political systems as follows:
With the absence of governance good practices and measures, corruption levels would gain traction, clawing its ugly head into institutions and establishments of trust which we commonly deal with, eventually eroding the very foundations of integrity and ethics such institutions were built for and relied on.
As aptly summarized by former World Bank President, Dr. Jim Yong Kin,
The effects of the absence of good governance practices and measures are cascaded into all levels of society and every one of us would be impacted. It is a step in the right direction for frameworks and policies to be put in place, which seek to be constitutional documents of an organization. Among others, PTP has in place the PTP Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption Policy and Framework (as can be viewed on the PTP website), which sets out PTP’s zerotolerance stance against corruption and requires each of its employees to sign the Corruption Fee Pledge in line with the initiative of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (“MACC”).
However, this alone is not enough No matter how good such policies and constitutional documents are, proper application and implementation are the real challenge. Combatting corruption needs commitment from every one of us, a commitment to conducting our affairs with honesty, integrity and ethics, in every aspect of our lives.
As highlighted by the former SecretaryGeneral of the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, Angel Gurria,
Therefore, let us join hands in combatting corruption together, starting with ourselves, in line with the MACC’s tagline- Abhor Corruption, Uphold Pride.
“When good governance does not exist, many governments fail to deliver public services effectively; health and education services are often substandard; corruption persists in rich and poor countries alike, choking opportunity and growth.”
"Integrity, transparency and the fight against corruption have to be part of culture. They have to be thought as fundamental values”

30 years. Originally from Sri Lanka, I joined the shipping industry in 1989 and started my career as a Trainee Executive for a multi-principal agency in Colombo which gave me a firm grounding in this field.
In 2002, my family and I moved to Malaysia to join CMA CGM Malaysia as the Regional Cargo Flow Manager where my portfolio has now grown. I now oversee seven departments, from Ship Planning to Operations.
Initially, my wife and I planned to only stay in Malaysia for roughly three years. But after twenty-one years and 3 kids, I’m still residing in Malaysia with no plans of returning to Colombo at the moment.
What was the most challenging obstacle you have experienced throughout your working experience?
If I look at some of the obstacles, one of the recent ones would be the COVID-19 pandemic. Working from home was initially fun but after some time, engaging with staff and retaining them was challenging, especially young mothers as they had to juggle between caring for their families and working
Can you briefly share your personal and work background?
My name is Sanjeeva Jayewardene. I’m currently the General Manager of CMA CGM Malaysia Sdn Bhd and have been in the shipping and logistics industry for over
Due to this pressure faced by them, we were facing a quite high turnover. We had to conduct interviews and training online which was tough To retain staff, we started trying different things such as asking the teams to have two meetings every day, one in the morning and one in the evening to keep them engaged and interested As managers, we keep in contact with our staff to check on how they are doing.
Therefore, I think that was one of the most challenging periods of my career There were many things which we thought we could not do remotely unless you are in the office and suddenly discover that there are lots of things which can be done by not being in the office.
What are the Leadership Principles that you have discovered and executed that have contributed to your success?
There are quite a few attributes that somebody needs to have to be a leader One thing that is very important to me is leading by example for people to follow. When you set the bar high, it does not mean that they must achieve 100% of it but it will aspire them to do better.
Another important point is the consistency in how you communicate with people in your decision making so that your team will have a better understanding of who you are and what your expectations are.
Can you share some life advice for readers of Pelepas Insight?
In the terminal, no matter whichever function you are working in, you need to be committed and honest in what you are doing and maintain self-respect so that you will not do something which would have undermined yourself or be put in an unattainable position.
It is also very important to challenge yourself to do well and the key to being in this industry for a long time is adaptability and keeping yourself relevant. Go on the internet, learn and put your best effort to upskill yourself This way, it makes the job much more interesting as you will understand the reasons behind why you must do certain things instead of just following them for the sake of doing it
Lastly, you must be humble in your outlook on life.
What is your view on the working relationship between CMA CGM and PTP? In your opinion, what are the roles that both parties can play to further improve to the success of PTP?
Last but not least, is to be empathetic towards your team members and understand their expectations and aspirations As leaders, we must see how to be realistic in guiding them and leading them to achieve their own goals and aspirations.
All these leadership characteristics, I did not develop them overnight Instead, I build them as I go and my style of leadership 10 years ago and what it is today, has also evolved. One cannot be a leader without the support from your teams and that is why when I build our objectives, I need to be mindful of the team and what they want to achieve
The initial years of CMA CGM and PTP working together were very difficult because both organizations had two very different philosophies However, over the years, both CMA CGM and PTP have learnt to collaborate and because of this, we are able to overcome many of our challenges We have also grown to know each other better and more so on a personal level which makes it easier to discuss any issues we are facing and understand each other’s requirements and work together to meet our own organization goals
Today, CMA CGM and PTP are in a good place where we have friendship and good cooperation
M&R Engineering Dept
My name is Ahmad Naufal Jailani from Alor Setar, where I was raised by two loving and hardworking parents Third out of four siblings, I completed my master’s degree in mechanical engineering in Bristol, UK before joining PTP as a graduate engineer in 2020.
I am currently part of the Automation team in M&R Engineering, a section whose core function is the maintenance and repair of QC and RTG, with a focus on crane control systems (PLC and drives). However, over the years my role has slowly transitioned into the implementation of Asset Digitization (AD) initiatives in the terminal.
On my end, my scope covers establishing hardware connectivity and conducting control systems signal mapping for the terminal equipment so that we can have a virtual representation of this equipment. I am also responsible for talking to Engineering stakeholders, gathering their high-value cases and working towards making it happen. When required, I participate in the corrective maintenance of the equipment with the team, to ensure business continuity of the terminal.
While it is difficult to choose just one memorable moment, there are a few that stand out In particular, a project that I was allowed to lead was - RTG Fuel Level Indicator Prototype. For this project, my team and I worked from the drawing board by designing a solution to the problem whereby RTG runs out of diesel in the middle of the terminal. Our prototype has been approved by the Management for mass production and is currently on the roadmap for full implementation , a project that I was allowed to lead is - RTG Fuel Level Indicator Prototype. For this project, my team and I worked from the drawing board by designing a solution to the problem whereby RTG runs out of diesel in the middle of the terminal. Our prototype has been approved by the Management for mass production and is currently on the roadmap for full implementation.
On another note, my team and I experienced a “life-threatening” situation when we were attacked by a group of crows while going up a crane. Turns out we were passing by a crow's nest, with crow's babies inside Fortunately, we exited the situation unharmed with the ERT team notified.
“Over the years my role has slowly transitioned into the implementation of Asset Digitization (AD) initiatives in the terminal.”
As there are achievements, there must be challenges also. Can you share one challenge and how you overcome it?
Like many other pilot projects, we are treading into uncharted territory, and as such, there is no precedent for us to follow.
With limited data or previous case studies, we need to establish a set of principles that can guide our decisionmaking process.
We consistently engage with PTP's network of experienced and knowledgeable personnel, in EFD and beyond Through this, we create a feedback system that generates a wealth of ideas among everyone involved.
During your free time, what's the favorite g you like to do?
ng my free time, I take the opportunity isconnect from work to maintain a hy work-life balance and prevent out One activity that I particularly enjoy alking outdoors Walking not only allows o get some physical exercise but also ws me to breathe in some fresh air and in nature's beauty. This helps me clear mind and let my subconscious run wild, h can be a great source of inspiration creativity
What's your motivation when it comes to work and can you share some words of encouragement for your colleagues?
As individuals, we are driven by the desire to make a positive impact, both in our personal and professional lives. For this reason, I am always eager to contribute to projects that provide me with a sense of ownership over my work and the overall success of my organization. It is incredibly motivating to know that my efforts can make a real difference in the works of others and how we operate as a team.
Therefore, to my colleagues, let us maintain a sense of curiosity We spend a significant amount of time in our jobs, so our work must provide us with more than just a financial reward. Seeing ourselves grow and develop through our work can be an incredibly fulfilling and rewarding experience in itself.
“If you have an apple and I have an apple, and we exchange apples, then each of us will still have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea, and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas."”
