According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM), in line with the National Solid Waste Management Policy 2016 that targeted a national recycling rate of 22% in 2020, Malaysia’s recycling rate in 2019 exceeded the set target of 28.1%, an increase of 3.5 percentage points compared to 24.6% in 2018. In contrast with other Asian countries, South Korea and Singapore recorded 53.7% and 34% recycling rates, respectively.
