GOOD GOVERNANCE AND FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION

With the heightened emphasis placed on Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) globally in recent years, ESG awareness is more essential now than ever. Being one of the key pillars under the ESG umbrella, Governance is closely tied to the fight against corruption.

Under Transparency International’s (“TI”) 2022 Corruption Perception Index which ranks nations by corruption levels globally, Malaysia has dropped -1 points and is currently ranked 61 out of 180. This appears as a step backward and TI highlights Malaysia as being a nation that has been on the decline in tackling corruption-related matters and calls on Governments to amongst others, prioritize anti-corruption commitments and reinforce checks and balances to make rid of corruption and the instability brought along with it.

What are the main principles of good Governance? The United Nation (“UN”) identifies 8 core principles identified with a nation’s political systems as follows:

With the absence of governance good practices and measures, corruption levels would gain traction, clawing its ugly head into institutions and establishments of trust which we commonly deal with, eventually eroding the very foundations of integrity and ethics such institutions were built for and relied on.

As aptly summarized by former World Bank President, Dr. Jim Yong Kin,

Personal Standards

The effects of the absence of good governance practices and measures are cascaded into all levels of society and every one of us would be impacted. It is a step in the right direction for frameworks and policies to be put in place, which seek to be constitutional documents of an organization. Among others, PTP has in place the PTP Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption Policy and Framework (as can be viewed on the PTP website), which sets out PTP’s zerotolerance stance against corruption and requires each of its employees to sign the Corruption Fee Pledge in line with the initiative of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (“MACC”).

However, this alone is not enough No matter how good such policies and constitutional documents are, proper application and implementation are the real challenge. Combatting corruption needs commitment from every one of us, a commitment to conducting our affairs with honesty, integrity and ethics, in every aspect of our lives.

As highlighted by the former SecretaryGeneral of the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, Angel Gurria,

Therefore, let us join hands in combatting corruption together, starting with ourselves, in line with the MACC’s tagline- Abhor Corruption, Uphold Pride.

We successfully launched our new ESG framework on 21 February 2023.
