COMMENTARY Air Force Families Forever: Honoring their memory, supporting their

Our families know what sacrifice means. We do it every day. At the Ramstein Military and Family Readiness Center, we are committed to ensuring that the bond between service members and their families doesn’t end with funeral honors.

The Air Force Families Forever program was created to continue caring for the families of our fallen service members and to ensure their loved ones always remain a valued part of our Air Force family.

The program is based on a promise to remember, honor and connect. Janine Rodriguez, AFFF program manager, has taken that promise seriously. As a Gold Star Family, Rodriguez understands the importance of staying connected, getting resources and providing services to the survivor families.

The AFFF program offers survivors, information and referral to services, grief and emotional support, remembrance events and ceremonies and ongoing community engagement and outreach. Some of the families might need a Defense Biometric Identification System, which provides them with installation access, and others might need

social support and connection. At its heart, AFFF is about connection making sure no surviving family member feels forgotten or alone. To do that, you have to make it personal.

“I will never forget the first time I met one of the families,” Rodriguez shared. “She told me the reason she decided to attend the event was because I called her instead of just sending an email. She said, ‘You made it personal.’ That stuck with me.”

Every story is different, but they are all woven into the fabric of the Air Force. We honor their memory and help their family members through remembrance ceremonies and supporting their needs.

AFFF is not just a program, it’s a call to connect. There are so many ways to support the families of our fallen, and it doesn’t have to cost anything. It could be by attending a memorial event, volunteering with survivor programs, or simply listening. Everyone in the community has something to offer. Every action matters.

For Rodriguez, the heart of AFFF is about unifying. That means connecting with other branches and building bridges with other Military & Family Readiness Centers. She’s constantly collaborating with other program managers and recently partnered with the Army’s Survivor Outreach Services representative

in the Kaiserslautern area.

Because of this teamwork, families, regardless of their branch of service, have come together, built relationships and found support in each other. We are planning on continuing to collaborate. These families have experienced incredible loss, and it doesn’t matter which branch their loved one served in; they need a community. We want them to know they’ll always be welcome, whether we are meeting in Ramstein or any of the Army bases.

This year, we hosted a beautiful Gold Star Family Brunch alongside our Army counterparts. Families gathered, connected and were given the space to share feedback. Their voices are helping us improve and grow the program. We’re already working on new ideas and hope to bring more meaningful events to life in the next few months.

As we continue to serve, we carry forward the memories of those who gave all and stand with the families who carry their legacy. Because “once you’re a part of the Air Force, always a part of the Air Force.”

“The purpose of this exchange is to bring all of our partners in one room to really learn from each other, to see what best practices are out there, but more importantly to take everything we’re doing in this exchange back out there to the field,” said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Gwendolyn Foster, 59th Medical Wing commander and San Antonio Military Health System at Joint Base San AntonioLackland, Texas, director.

Originating in 2014, the EAMNE conference was designed for military members of different nations to share medical knowledge and strengthen the bonds with partner nations. This year’s conference theme was “Forging Future Frontiers: Enhancing Joint Military Healthcare Innovation with Global Partners.”

“When you look at our current landscape and what that future fight may be, it’s going to be all hands on deck,” Foster said. “It’s not going to matter what our badge is. It’s not going to matter what our flag is. Our war fighters are going to be counting on us to be able to keep them alive.”

By connecting with partner nations, the members were able to share their personal experiences with each other.

“It’s heartening to see that we’re not alone in the challenges that we face,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Erin Regan, International Health Specialist Program Office executive officer. “We all have the same mentality. We all have the same questions. We all see barriers we’re trying to overcome.”

Throughout the event, members exchanged medical knowl -

to promote interoperability while strengthening the relationship between the U.S. and partner nations.

edge and learned about different practices and ideas to bring back to their home bases.

“The best part of the conference was being able to interact and exchange experiences with people from other countries and communities,” said 1st Lt. Julieta Marieta Antonio, Angola African delegate.

Attendees had the opportunity to work with members from partner nations through simulated and virtual reality exercises promoting interoperability while strengthening critical hands-on skills.

“We have several hours over the course of days where we are all practicing our field care exercises,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Keshia Brown, Landstuhl Regional

Medical Center primary care flight commander. “We want to ask how other countries do procedures so we can all collaborate and do it the best way.”

During the simulations, members encountered various challenges forcing them to change their approach to get the mission done.

“It challenges us to be open minded to receive what it is [other countries] are teaching us,” Brown said. “We have to be open minded enough to receive that information and carry it forward.”

By creating teams during the exercises, personnel built collaborative relationships and learned to effectively communicate with one another.

“We’re going to need to know

their resources and they need to know our resources,” Foster said. “We’re going to need to know how we connect together.”

One certainty of this exchange was its ability to equip our forces for the ever-evolving future.

“Our fight is changing,” Brown said. “We have to change with those times and build partnerships with as many nations as we can in order to stay ahead.”

At the end of the day, this exchange allowed members to collaborate with those whom they do not work with on a regular basis.

“I love connecting with people of all cultures and nationalities, “ Brown said. “I’ve learned we’re all pretty much the same. We all want to live in a world that’s safe.”

“We need all our partners in the room,” Foster said. “We need everybody at the table… so we’re not losing lives on the battlefield.”

Ultimately, the conference was about more than gaining medical practice. It was about forging relationships crucial for the success of military medical professionals across our partner nations.

“I want people to go back with a sense of knowing that relationships are the most important,” Brown said. “The better we build those relationships, the more peaceful our world will be.”

Although members were able to work with nursing personnel from other nations during the exchange, this was just the first step to creating an interoperable environment within the medical field with our partner nations.

Ramstein hosts DoDEA Spring Special Olympics

The Department of Defense Education Activity held the Spring Special Olympics at Ramstein Air Base, May 30.

The event brought special needs students together to have a sports field day celebrating them and the end of the school year.

“The goal of the special olympics is to bring the special needs community together and let them know they are valued,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Marcus Tivis, 693rd Intelligence Support Squadron operations flight commander. “We want to bring everybody together for a good cause and raise awareness.”

The event allowed the students to have increased social interaction, something they do not regularly see.

“They’re a lot more isolated from the rest of the school,” said Lynette Dunstan, a paraprofessional at Ramstein Middle School. “It’s important for the kids to get out in the community. It gives them a chance to get out and be themselves and meet kids from other schools.”

Not only were the olympics beneficial to the students, it helped parents as well.

“I have a full-time job so I don’t get to have 24/7 interactions with my daughter,” said Roderick Wilson, a parent volunteer. “So when I come to events like this and get to see her interacting with her friends and having fun in groups, it’s just perfect.”

Along with Air Force and Army volunteers, the event included students and staff from nine schools across the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

“Events of this scale where we’re bringing in other schools were really rare back home,” Wilson said. “The sense of community is just awesome to see.”

The special olympics provided the children and their families with a field day, giving them a sense of being seen and valued.

“It’s so hard to get others to understand the importance of special needs events,” said Shirley Valdivia, a parent volunteer. “This shows that the military community cares about families like us.”

Ultimately, the event raised awareness about special needs students and gave them a chance to be in the spotlight.

“At the end of the day, they are just kids and they want to be included too,” Dunstan said. “It’s amazing that the community gets to see how amazing the kids are. This is the highlight of my year.”

Members from the 786th Force Support Squadron and 52nd FSS competed in Operation Steel, May 28-29, at the 435th Construction and Training Squadron Compound near Ramstein Air Base.

Operation Steel is U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa’s first readiness-focused competition designed specifically for force support squadrons. The event brought together the two teams to demonstrate expeditionary skills, leadership under pressure, and unit cohesion in a high-tempo environment.

The competition was conducted in two phases. Phase one challenged units from across USAFE-AFAFRICA to submit award-

style nomination packages, highlighting recent accomplishments, mission readiness, and individual contributions. Submissions were evaluated by USAFE-AFAFRICA’s A1 readiness team, and the top two squadrons were selected to advance.

Phase two brought the competition into the field. Held in a simulated austere training environment, the two-day event immersed Airmen in contingency scenarios modeled after real-world events. Teams faced realistic deployment conditions, limited equipment, evolving mission needs, and reduced manning, all while being evaluated on performance.

“This wasn’t just about executing tasks. It was a scenario built on experiences we’ve seen firsthand,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Glenda Nathaniel, USAFE-AFAFRICA readi-

ness and plans planner. “Our goal was to spark critical thinking, problem-solving, and team-level growth.”

Some of the scenarios included setting up a Single Pallet Expeditionary Kitchen, constructing lodging tents, reacting to simulated emergencies, updating accountability logs and developing withdrawal plans.

“Some of our team had never built a SPEK before, but they jumped in and got hands-on right away,” said Master Sgt. Cory Banks, 786th FSS noncommissioned officer in charge of readiness and plans. “Operation Steel tested our ability to work under pressure and think strategically, even when circumstances changed quickly.”

While grounded in readiness, the event also emphasized camaraderie and unit pride. Teams strategized together, supported each

other, and embraced the competitive edge.

“None of this was theoretical,” said Master Sgt. Marcelo Sierra, USAFE-AFAFRICA readiness and plans planner. “This wasn’t training, it was a competition. We wanted people to show up, show out, and be proud of what they bring to the mission.”

Events like Operation Steel are important not only because they sharpen technical skills but also in how they support long-term strategic objectives. Looking ahead, the team behind this year’s inaugural event is confident that Operation Steel will become a lasting tradition not just for USAFE-AFRICA, but across the force.

“This is just the beginning,” Sierra added. “We’ve already had other major commands ask for our blueprint. We’re building something that lasts.”

101 Critical Days of Summer – Fun in the sun!

It’s time to have some fun in the sun. The 101 Critical Days of Summer focuses on preventing the annual spikes in injuries and accidents between Memorial Day through Labor Day. These accidents not only impact individuals and their families, but also mission readiness and force lethality.

Risks associated with summertime activities can be avoided by doing a risk assessment beforehand or taking a refresher course if you haven’t participated in some time. Make a list of essential items that will be needed for the activity. At a minimum, the list should include an emergency medical kit, plenty of water or drinks containing electrolytes, food and snacks high in potassium and protein if the activity will be strenuous. Never leave Mother Nature to chance and prepare for the unexpected.

Summer is the time to enjoy the warm sunny days but do it safely. Wear sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher when out playing in the sun or in the water as the sun’s ultraviolet rays reflect off the surface and can damage your skin. Using sunscreen will keep your skin from sunburns or worse. According to the National Cancer Institute, skin cancer, also known as melanoma of the skin, will have an estimated 100,640 new cases in 2024. Make sure to lather up and don’t forget about the top of ears and noses.

Additionally, consider using sunglasses with a UVA or UVB rating of UV400 to keep eyes safe from the sun’s ultraviolet rays that can also damage the eyes. According to the National Eye Institute, the suns UVA and UVB rays can cause multiple eye problems such as early cataracts, pinguecula and pterygium to name a few.

When engaging in strenuous physical activity, such as playing sports in the sun, take frequent breaks to cool down and hydrate often with water or drinks that contain electrolytes. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks as they can dehydrate you. Know the symptoms of

heat exhaustion or heat stroke and how to treat them. If you notice someone in heat distress, call 911 and move them to a cooler place. Try to lower their body temperature with cool cloths or a cool bath if it is available. Do not give the person anything to drink if you suspect heat stroke. Continue to cool their body down until first responders arrive.

Swimming in the ocean to cool down or to enjoy a game of tag or Marco Polo is another summertime favorite. Be cautious when in the water as rip currents can form without warning. Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that move away from the shore. According to the National Weather Service, rip currents are the number one hazard at the beach and are the cause of over 100 drownings per year in the United States. If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore to get out of it and never swim alone.

As the days get longer, the desire to head into the great outdoors and take that long-anticipated motorcycle ride, camping or hiking trip is music to the soul. Before venturing out, be sure to plan for the unexpected, as weather can change in the blink of an eye. Make a list of items that may be needed if the weather changes. Consider an emergency medical kit with extra batteries, blankets, jackets, food and water. Once the plan is set, remember to share it with family and friends.

Before taking the first motorcycle ride of the year, make sure to check the weather, road conditions and do a T-CLOCS check. Check tires and wheels, controls, lights and electrics, oil and other fluids, chassis and stand should all be working correctly before you ride. Once the motorcycle is ready, verify what riding gear will be needed such as, helmet, gloves, long sleeve shirt or leather jacket, pants and over the ankle boots. For additional safety gear, consider packing rain gear and an airbag vest.

For the avid mountain biker, the list should also include bike supplies and personal protective

gear, to include bike helmet, gloves, and riding gear that covers weather changes. Biking tools should include a pump with several needles, gear adjustment tools, extra tubes or slime to fix a flat.

Hiking can be strenuous depending on where you go or if the hike will be overnight. If the plan is an overnight hike, headlamps, water filtration devices, light layers, tent, sleeping bag and foods high in protein should be on the list. Plan out your trip by making a map of the area you will heading to and let someone know where you plan to be. Hiking poles can help with balance and stability in the steep ascents or descents and helps protect the knees. Stretch out muscles to warm them up before and after the hikes. Stretching before strenuous activities to stay limber can help you stay injury free.

“Summer is a time to relax and have fun in the sun but do it responsibly by incorporating risk management in all your summertime activities.” said William Walkowiak, Air Force Safety Center Occupational Safety chief. “Risks are in everything we do, so this summer before you start an activity do a risk assessment to help lower the risks involved for a safer summer.”

USPS recognizes 250 years of Army, Navy, Marine Corps with new stamps

To commemorate the 250th anniversaries of the Army, Navy and Marine Corps, the U.S. Postal Service released a set of three new commemorative stamps that recognize each service’s long-standing dedication to defending the nation.

The three stamps, each featuring the name of the military service, the service seal and the inscrip-

tions “250 Years of Service,” “Since 1775,” and “Forever/USA,” were revealed during a ceremony today at Freedom Plaza in Washington.

Jeffery A. Adams, USPS corporate communications vice president and Army veteran, spoke about the importance of service during the event.

“Service isn’t about a uniform. It’s about impact. It’s about showing up. It’s about standing up when it matters the most,” he said. “As we honor 250 years of military service

... we also recognize those who are serving right now all over the world and keeping our freedoms alive. I know many of you here are veterans yourselves, and maybe you’re still serving, and for that, we thank you.”

Adams said he hopes the new military-themed commemorative stamps will remind all Americans who use them of the importance of military service.

“[They are] reminders for every American that freedom didn’t come easy, and it doesn’t stay unless we protect it,” he said. “Let these stamps serve as a lasting symbol of courage, of commitment and of country.”

Army Lt. Gen. Gregory J. Brady, Army inspector general, said while the new stamps are a significant commemoration, the Postal Service itself has considerable value to troop morale overall.

Navy Vice Adm. Michael Boyle, director of the Navy staff, pointed out the unique re lation ship between the Navy and the Postal Service — considering how many sailors are not on land, but at sea.

Three new USPS commemorative stamps honoring the 250th anniversaries of the Army, Navy and Marine Corps were unveiled during a ceremony at Freedom Plaza in Washington, May 16.

Schlemmerwerk im Kipperhof Hauptstr. 12, 67731 Otterbach Call

“Today’s important commemoration should not close without recognizing the huge morale booster that the Postal Service has been to our military,” he said. “Generations of military personnel serving in foreign lands, deployed — I can attest to this ... firsthand — they’ve always cherished those two words when [their] first sergeant is coming in with that big bag. Those two words are ‘mail call!’ [It’s] the high point of their months and years away from home. Mr. Postmaster General, Team USPS, thank you.”

“I want to thank the United States Postal Service for honoring this legacy with the release of the Armed Forces 250th Anniversary Forever Stamps,” Boyle said. “I would also like to thank the United States Postal Service for their partnership with the Navy, a partnership that has spanned nearly two-anda-half centuries. You have well and faithfully delivered mail to ships on the far side of the world, always finding a way to keep people connected. No matter the distance. Letters and care packages from friends and family delivered to our deployed sailors at sea make an immense difference.”

Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Paul J. Rock Jr., director of the Marine Corps staff, told event guests how the relationship between the U.S. military and the Postal Service has enhanced his military service.

“I still have letters that my wife wrote me when I was a young first lieutenant overseas on my first shipboard deployment, and I cherish the pictures that came through the mail from my children the first time I went to war — precious memories made possible by the United States Postal Service ,” Rock said. “That connection remains strong to this day, and I thank the USPS for helping us share this great milestone with all Americans. These stamps will travel around the world and across our nation, carrying with them the message of patriotism, service and unwavering dedication.”

(Dr.) Scott Rankin, (2nd row far left) commander of Dental Health Command Europe, travelled to Paris, France, recently where he took part in the 38th Annual NATO COMEDS Oral Health Services Panel. Senior military dental leaders from 15 NATO nations and Switzerland took part in the 4-day meeting. The multinational panel met to discuss the potential challenges presented due to large-scale combat operations. Topics of discussion ranged from dental readiness of respective active-duty forces, as well as personnel that would be mobilized during an Article V scenario. The panel also looked at dental field equipment currently being utilized by the different nations and planning for increased multinational participation during future training exercises.

Paralympic medalist, former Navy SEAL shares personal story of how Military Health System saved his life

“Your mission is vital. I think you’re going to see in my story that I’m alive here, up on this really high platform, because of the Military Health System. This is a success story.”

That’s Dan Cnossen, a seventime Paralympic medalist, former Navy SEAL and keynote speaker at the 2025 Military Health System Conference in Cleveland, Ohio.

Cnossen delivered his powerful story of perseverance and overcoming extraordinary challenges to nearly 2,000 conference participants, inspiring the audience with his captivating ability to set goals and shift perspective — even when it feels impossible.

In September 2009, Cnossen led a platoon in Taliban-controlled Helmand Province in Afghanistan. As he and his team moved into position on top of a hill overlooking the platoon’s target compound, everything changed in a flash of an instant.

“We got to the designated point and proceeded up the hill. It was about a 20-minute walk. We got to the top. I remember taking a step, and cautiously taking another step. I paused. Next thing I know, I saw a flash of light under my goggles,” he said.

Cnossen stepped on an improvised explosive device. “I needed my teammates. I remember feeling a rising sense of internal panic. I couldn’t do anything,” he said.

The details, he recalls, are few and far between. “It’s steep, it’s too dark, it’s too rocky. I remember landing on sharp rocks. It was slow and damaging to my body. [My team] dragged me by shoulder straps, rocks cutting into my body like knives. The medic was telling me to stay awake. That was my personal fight. I lack the words to describe this experience in detail. But for my teammates, it’s very tiring to do a body drag. It’s like a 60-second sprint.”

‘I owe him more than I can say’ As his teammate dragged him down the hill and into a helicopter, Cnossen blacked out. Thanks to the fast action of his team in Helmand, Cnossen was airlifted to Kandahar

where a team of U.S. military doctors were ready to act. One of those doctors was Dr. Stephen Ferrara, now the acting assistant secretary of defense for health affairs.

Eleven days later, Cnossen awoke from a medically induced coma at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland, now known as Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. His legs were gone, but he was alive.

Speaking on how Ferrara saved his life, Cnossen said “I owe him more than I can say. He could have gone anywhere in the world to serve, but he accepted the call to serve in Afghanistan.”

A national hero

A testament to his character, Cnossen recalls the worst part of his experience. Even after losing his legs, shattering his pelvis, and enduring seven-to-10 hours of painful surgeries week after week throughout his two-year recovery, the worse thing, he said, was “dealing with lying in an ICU bed, stuck. The platoon is going to deploy. I’m not there to share the risk. I’m here in this bed and I cannot get out. That was corrosive.”

Cnossen’s inspirational character and commitment to his team and mission were not lost on Ferrara. “We have a national hero and all-around amazing person here. A true American hero in every sense of the word,” said Ferrara of Cnossen during his opening remarks at the conference.

Enduring two years of pain, rehabilitation, and emotional distress, Cnossen did not give up. He made a conscious effort to change his mindset and overcome what many would consider unbearable.

“There’s this notion of perspective,” he said. “The way you look at a moment, there are many angles to look at a scenario. Ultimately, I had to look at the totality of the situation. Challenge yourself— there’s at least one good thing to find. My arms could work. My legs were long enough for prosthetics. My limbs were long enough. Maybe, I’ll get to run. That’s another thing I can look forward to. That was motivating.”

Bringing humor to his story, Cnossen shared that, as a double

Dan Cnossen, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL and a Paralympian, gives the keynote address on the opening day of the 2025 Military Health System Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 29. Cnossen spoke about his experiences in the military and veterans health systems as a wounded service member, and his motivation to become a world-class athlete.

leg amputee, he would finally be over six feet tall. “Humor can really help,” he said.

Unparalleled care, perspective, and focus

Recalling his experience under the compassionate care of the doctors and nurses throughout the MHS, Cnossen wouldn’t have wanted to receive care anywhere else. “All this care I was getting, this is the best place to be. The prosthetics I’m going to get, they’re the best. There’s no better place to be in this condition,” he said.

By intentionally shifting his perspective and focus, Cnossen found a path forward, first in rehabilitation at WRNMMC and eventually as a Paralympic athlete representing Team USA. He shifted his focus from what was lost to what remained: his functioning arms, his gratitude, and his life. This generated psychological momentum, driving him toward recovery and eventually, athletic excellence.

He also focused on making small steps: getting out of bed, meeting visitors, getting his wheelchair and eventually prosthetics, and just making it through the day. This gave him renewed purpose.

“That bomb in Afghanistan took my legs. Ultimately, it had to be up to me if it would take my life,” he said.

Cnossen was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Valor from the Secretary of the Navy. He is currently training to compete with Team USA in the 2026 Paralympic Games.

His captivating speech kicked off the four-day annual MHS Conference, hosted by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, which convened to share knowledge, advance innovation, and highlight new initiatives within the MHS. In his clos-

ing remarks on May 1, Dr. Ferrara emphasized the quality of the stories and information shared to improve the health care of the warfighter,

saying the conference was “moving and inspiring, and helped bring us back to the center of what the nature of our mission is all about.”

Explosive Ordnance Disposal techs support US Army recruiting at Long Beach Grand Prix

U.S. Army 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives Command Public Affairs

LONG BEACH, CAL. — U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians supported Army recruiters at one of the biggest motorsports events in the western United States.

Army EOD technicians from the Fort Irwin, California-based 759th Ordnance Company, helped Army recruiting efforts at the Long Beach Grand Prix.

The Army EOD techs talked with potential recruits about serving in the Army and EOD profession in support of the Long Beach Recruiting Company, Los Angeles Recruiting Battalion and 6th Recruiting Brigade.

The Fort Irwin, California-based 759th EOD Company “Detonators” are part of the 3rd EOD Battalion, 71st EOD Group and 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives Command, the U.S. Department of Defense’s premier multifunctional and deployable CBRNE formation.

Soldiers and Army civilians from the 20th CBRNE Command deploy from 19 bases in 16 states to confront and defeat the world’s most dangerous hazards in support of joint, interagency and multinational operations.

EOD techs from the 759th EOD Company routinely conduct range ordnance clearance operations in support of the Fort Irwin National Training Center where ground combat units take on opposition forces in the Mojave Desert across an area almost as large as the state of Rhode Island.

In addition to enabling combat training center rotations and military operations overseas, the 759th EOD Company also supports civil authorities when military munitions

are discovered in 89 counties across California, Nevada and Arizona.

Spc. Tyler C. Miller from the 759th EOD Company said many visitors were interested in talking with him about the lifesaving and mission-enabling EOD profession.

“The highlight of the grand prix was being able to engage with people who were interested in my work and then seeing the new technology in the cars that were used,” said Miller, who is originally from Mounds View, Minnesota. “Of the thousands of people there, we ran into Andre Miller, a former NBA player and now a G-League head coach.”

The almost two-mile Long Beach Grand Prix racetrack ran through closed city streets around the Long Beach Convention Center. More than 200,000 people attended the threeday event.

Capt. Timothy M. Arndt from the 759th EOD Company said the Long Beach Grand Prix gave them a chance to display the tools of their trade.

“We brought our MTRS-II robotics system, a bomb suit and some various types of ordnance items for the people to see. We were set up in the middle of the expo center with the other Army units that were present,” said Arndt. “Overall, I would say we talked with 1,000 people over the course of the three days.”

Arndt was also impressed by the Army recruiters at the race.

“It was interesting to learn about how they can utilize their resources to put out a good product for the potential new recruits,” said Arndt. “They know how to engage with people, figure out what they need and then point them in the right direction.”

A native of Fairfax Station, Virginia, Arndt earned his bachelor’s degree in applied physics and mathematics from Creighton University, and he earned his master’s degree

in mental health and wellness from Grand Canyon University. Arndt, who earned the “Perfect Edge” at the Expert Soldier Badge qualification on Fort Irwin, said the 759th EOD Company routinely helps Army recruiters.

“We support recruiting events a few times a year with Southern California Recruiting Battalion and Los Angeles Recruiting Battalion,” said Arndt. “Once a year, we hold a recruiting event on Fort Irwin for Soldiers that are interested in transferring into EOD.”

“My advice for anyone wanting to become an EOD tech is to remain humble, ask a recruiter what the next steps are and mentally prepare yourself to go through a long and stressful mental grind,” said Arndt.

Capt. Matthew S. Juntz, an engineer officer serving as commander of the Long Beach Recruiting Company, said that in addition to the Army EOD techs, cyber warfare experts, the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and U.S. Army Marketing and Engagement Brigade supported Army recruiters at the Long Beach Grand Prix.

A native of Fort Bragg, California, Juntz earned his bachelor’s degree from The Citadel and earned master’s degrees in social science from The Citadel Graduate College, military studies from American Military University and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College. He is pursuing a doctorate in strategic security studies from National American University. Juntz has served in the Army for 15 years and he deployed to Afghanistan.

Juntz said the Long Beach Grand Prix generated 1,576 total leads and 980 qualified leads.

While Kyle Kirkwood won the IndyCar race at the street track in Long Beach, Juntz said the event was a winning opportunity for the Army to find future Soldiers.

Fabulous Forest

One of the best aspects of living in the Kaiserslautern Military Community is that it is located right in the heart of the Palatinate Forest, or Pfälzerwald. The forest is a beautiful, expansive and diverse wooden landscape and is one of the largest contiguous forests in Germany. It is a part of the larger UNESCO Palatinate ForestNorth Vosges Biosphere Reserve which extends into France.

With an area of roughly 1,771 square kilometers (682 square miles) it stretches from Neustadt/ Weinstrasse and Kaiserslautern in the north, to the French border in the south and slowly slopes off in the Vosges. It is also home to a rich variety of flora and fauna and an eldorado for wanderers and hikers.

The Palatinate Forest offers a vast network of official hiking routes and there are over 12,000 kilometers of marked trails. They range from easy walks to challenging hikes while exploring landscapes with picturesque villages, rocky formations and dense forests.

Some of the most popular routes are the Dahner Felsenpfad with miraculous rocky formations and the Annweiler Castle Trail that leads hikers through history and to the castle where English king Richard the Lionhearted was held captive.

Easy hikes might lead nature enthusiasts to Donnersberg with Celtic relics or to Mehlinger Heide, both with panoramic views over the countryside. A walk in “outer space” is another option along the Planetenweg (planet walk) that leads up to a giant sundial at Reiserberg near Otterberg.

Two events which offer family fun, dining Palatinate specialties enroute and fantastic vistas along the way annually takes place as the “Kulinarische Panoramawanderung” in Oberes Glantal and upcoming “Alte Welt Schlem mer wan der ung” from Heimkirchen/Otterberg on June 15. A mysterious hike

This week we would like to take you on a special journey full of mystery and tragedy. The Elendsklamm (Gorge of Misery) lies in the forest between Bruchmühlbach and Martinshöhe. Despite its rather uninviting name the ravine with its ancient trees, waterfalls and stone formations is actually a fairly picturesque place for anyone seeking a detox in nature.

The various hiking paths are well maintained and guide local travelers to the prettiest – and most instagramable – parts of the ravine. One of the awesome sights is a large boulder with a deep engraving reading “Rautendelein.”

Rautendelein is a mystic creature of German folklore. In a famous poem by Gerhart Hauptmann, a noble prize winner in literature, Rautendelein is a fey creature which falls in love with a bell caster named Heinrich. Heinrichs’ best sounding bell is accidentally dropped in the local lake. Full of sorrow about the loss of his prized creation he meets the fairy Rautendelein and falls in love with her. Heinrich, who is rather inconveniently already married with kids, abandons his family to live with the fairy. His wife drowns herself and her children out of despair and her vengeful spirit starts ringing the bell resting at the bottom of the lake. Heinrich, driven mad by the continuous ringing and his guilt then dies in Rautendelein’s arms.

No one knows for sure why the name of the fairy is engraved in the boulder. One legend has it that an allied soldier carved the name into the rock during the world war to be used a navigation point. Escaped prisoners of war and downed pilots could use the rock as a landmark to find their way back to the frontline undetected.

Others add that the term RAUT END ELEIN was chosen as it reads somewhat similar to “route end ally,” but would not draw unwanted attention as a plain English engraving would have. The less fanciful, but also less interesting, explanation is that the name was simply engraved by a local romantic who believed the gorge resembled a typical fairytale woodland.

In any case, the inscription remains a mystery, but it might inspire you to hike the mysterious trail and come to your own conclusion. Happy hiking wherever the path may lead you!

U.S. Air Force 86th Airlift Wing Safety Office hosted a mentorship ride, embracing positive motorcycle safety culture while maintaining relationships with the Kaiserslautern Military Community, May 27.

The hour-long ride began at Ramstein Air Base and ended at Bernkastel-Kues where they met with members assigned to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany.

The Ramstein mentorship ride program informally began in 2013 and continues to fuel riders by providing them opportunities to engage and travel across Germany with a motorcycle community. With over 60 KMC service members and civilians, and 12 Spangdahlem AB members in attendance the event marks the largest mentorship ride in at least 15 years.

“Riding motorcycles has been a great way to build connections across the KMC, especially between U.S. and German personnel,” expressed German air force Lt. Col. Nader Samadi, president of the Green Knights chapter 29, a local motorcycle club. “It breaks down cultural and language barriers. We’re all just riders when the helmets go on and we all speak the same ‘motorcycle language’ regardless of where we work or what our title is. You’re not talking to a Colonel or an Airman, you’re talking to a fellow rider.”

Prior to the mentorship ride, U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. James L. Correll, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron senior enlisted leader, emphasized the acronym ‘T-CLOCS’. This acronym is used as a guide to remind operators to check tires and wheels, controls, lights, oil, chassis, and stands, to ensure everything is functioning properly before riding.

“Mentorship rides are a way we can support Airmen and families while building confidence on the road,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. David Cunningham, 86th AW occupational safety technician.“It’s important to foster a culture of positive connection, where wellness and work-life balance are essential at overseas locations.”

Coaches balanced thrill with focused concentration, providing an opportunity for riders to grow and develop by observing and learning from their experienced mentees. Along with the morale event, mentorship ride participants, intermediate and experienced, were also able to reset their refresher training expiration date for five years before requiring another training course.

“As someone who’s never been stationed in Germany, the motorcycling community has helped me explore the region and see the sights… it’s expanded my social network and opened up new doors to bond with fellow riders,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Mark Kern, 21st Operational Weather Squadron section chief of standards and evaluations at Kapaun Air Station.

To join this community of riders, contact your Unit Motorcycle Coordinator for information. If your unit does not have a UMC, send an email: kmc. MotorcycleSafetyProgram@ramstein.af.mil or call 86th AW Safety office at 480-7233.

GACO CORNER: WHAT IS IT WITH KAISERSLAUTERN AND THE FISH?

You might have seen big, painted fish statues in different places in Kaiserslautern or spotted the fish in the city crest.

The story of the fish in the city crest has been the source of many stories and some controversy. Local historians have documented one story that seems to satisfy most Kaiserslautern’ers.

When the first settlements arose on the Rittersberg around 7,000 years ago, there was no mention of a city coat of arms. However, the clear, pure waters referred to in the Old High German word “Hlutraha,” which gave the settlement its name, held an abundance of fish in the area. So, it’s probably no coincidence that a fish adorns the Kaiserslautern coat of arms today.

On November 6,1497, a fisherman caught a pike in one of the lakes. The fish was almost 20 feet long and weighed 350 pounds. It was the biggest fish anyone had ever seen. But that wasn’t all. A golden chain with a ring attached to it hung around the fish’s neck. The ring had an inscription on it but no one, not even the wise city fathers, could read it.

CROSSWORD

The pike was taken to Heidelberg to have the inscription translated. A Bishop determined that the inscription was Greek and read: “I am the first among all the other fish that has personally been put in the lake by Emperor Friedrich II (grandson of Barbarossa) on October 5,1230. “

After this happened, the two small fish that were on the city crest before were replaced by one big fish.

Now the fish figures that can be seen all through Kaiserslautern have a different story:

In 2001, Kaiserslautern celebrated its 725th anniversary after receiving its city rights in 1276. For this celebration, schools, companies, and organizations could purchase fish in various sizes and paint or decorate them however they wanted.

One of the fish placed is the KMC fish standing right at the corner of the German-American Community Office. This fish with propellors and German and American flags symbolizes German-American friendship for over seven decades.

Have you spotted any fish around the city?

FOR SWIMMING POOLS IN GERMANY:

1. Read the signs. Look out for signs posted or painted on the ground that tell you what you can or can’t do. Popular signs include ones that prohibit jumping from the side, no food allowed areas, no smoking areas, etc.

2.

Food rules. In many places, it’s okay to bring a picnic, but don’t eat or drink in the pool area. Picnics are permitted in designated areas or on your blanket on the grass. Most pools also have food stalls that sell snacks.

3. Bring a blanket to lie on and plenty of towels or a robe. Pools will have some lounge chairs right beside the pool. However, most people lie on the grass with picnic blankets.

4. Expect warm water. The water in most pools will be heated.

5. Watch your kids… and others’ as well. Pool toys are allowed, but be sure that older children are careful around the younger ones playing nearby.

6. Trees are prime real estate at outdoor pools, so plan ahead. Many pools have trees that provide great shady spots. However these spots are quickly taken so feel free to bring a shade umbrella.

7. No pool time without showering. Always shower at the facilities before you enter the pool.

8. Expect solid locker rooms and bathrooms. There will be toilets, changing facilities and often lockers on site.

9. Remember the bugs. Picnic, sweets, drinks, beer, etc. attract insects, especially bees and wasps. Remember,

insects aren’t really into you, per se. Try not to hit them or they will get aggressive. If you get stung, pull stinger out, cool immediately, and if possible, rinse the wound with plain white vinegar, which can help to reduce the swelling!

10. Expect lifeguards. Lifeguards are on duty at most pools. FOR SWIMMING LAKES IN GERMANY:

1. Check for depth. Never dive/jump into a lake without knowing the depth of the water first. Many are quite shallow, especially near the shore.

2. Prepare for the sun. Not every lake has shaded areas, bring a sun umbrella or beach shelter, etc. and plenty of sunscreen.

4. Don’t stay in the water too long. Children sometimes don’t realise how cold they are and lakes are obviously not heated so may remain quite cool, even in summer. Bring plenty of towels to dry off after your swim.

5. Remember the bugs (again). The same rules apply here as above. Bees and wasps are attracted to sweet things, especially drinks like tea, beer, or soda. Beware.

6.

Remember that lakes are not pools. Some lakes do have currents and undertows – don’t overestimate your ability, stay close to shore if you are not a strong swimmer.

7. Be careful with water toys. Careful with floating mattresses, toys, etc. Watchful eyes are much better than water

3. Protect your feet. Bring swimming shoes, flip flops etc. to avoid stepping in broken glass or other sharp objects that may be there.

toys at keeping children safe.

8. Don’t expect great infrastructure. While some lakes have showers and changing rooms (some of them quite nice!), not all of them do. The same goes for toilets. Plan accordingly.

9. Moderation in all things. Sometimes it can be tempting to have one drink too many on a nice sunny day by the lake. Be careful with your alcohol intake, especially around water.

10. Do not expect lifeguards. Many lakes do not have lifeguards patrolling the area. If you have children, it is crucial to watch them carefully, and keep an eye on them at all times. Same goes for any swimmers in your party.

Now that you know what to do, get out there, and have a great summer!
