The 86th Medical Group held its second iteration of Tactical Combat Casualty Care training for German SWAT members from different states throughout Germany, at Ramstein Air Base, July 28 - Aug. 1.

The five day course followed the success of last year’s training, which was inspired by RheinlandPfalz Special Operations Police Force’s goal to strengthen SWAT medical skills and foster relationships between German police and the U.S. Air Force.

“This training shows we can work in every combat casualty care scenario together,” said a Rheinland-Pfalz Special Forces Police medic. “Whether it’s the Air Force or Army, we get familiar with each other’s terminology to achieve

the same goal, saving lives.”

Over the week, 86th MDG personnel trained SWAT officers on advanced bleeding control methods and other lifesaving techniques in the classroom and applied the practical skills in real world training scenarios using cutting-edge mannequins.

“Our main goal is teaching a high-level grasp of U.S. military TCCC; bridging the language and terminology gap,” said Tech. Sgt Ryan Tegtmeier, 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight aeronautical evacuation technician. “Sharing our military’s medical knowledge has always been a way we establish deeper trust and relationship with other nations.”

The second-annual joint training further cemented the working relationship between German

police and the U.S. Air Force. According to Tegtmeier, the continued collaboration also ensures that both sides keep growing their capabilities.

The conclusion of the course consisted of a rigorous final exercise in which SWAT members were required to apply all skills learned throughout the week. This exercise was designed to test not only the technical medical skills they had developed, but also their ability to work cohesively under pressure. The SWAT officers performed advanced trauma care in highstress, realistic combat environments, replicating the conditions they might encounter in real-life operations.

One SWAT member explained how the training connected the forces and the whole point of the training was for the members to be better today than they were yesterday.

Washington Commanders hold military appreciation day

The NFL’s Washington Commanders paused their usual training camp routine August 10 to host thousands of service members and their families for a military appreciation day, an invitation-only session at the team’s practice facility that culminated in a joint-service “Salute to Service” boot camp on the field.

Approximately 4,000 people attended the event this year, which is organized through the club’s Washington Salute program.

The event, closed to the general public, gave troops and families a close-up view of practice at the OrthoVirginia Training Center in

Ashburn, Virginia, and then turned them into participants — running drills, doing physical training and competing side by side in NFL-style drills led by club staff.

The boot camp has become a recurring feature of Commanders’ camp and similar NFL engagements, designed to honor and connect the military community with the team.

“It was a really good time to get out there and connect with other [military] branches — do a little PT, compete a little bit and show our Marines are the best,” said Marine Corps Cpl. James McGee assigned to 3rd Platoon, Guard Company, Marine Barracks Washington. “I joined the Marine Corps because a lot of my family

LIST YOUR UNIT IN

served. They set a positive example of what a person should be — a call to duty — and it inspired me to do the same.”

Army Staff Sgt. Francesco Romero, a pianist with the U.S. Army Band, said the day offered a different kind of stage.

“It was amazing training in the Commanders’ facilities with partners from all the branches,” she said. “Joining the Army for me was a last-minute decision but representing this country through music is an incredible opportunity — and stepping away from the piano to do PT with my fellow [service members] was just as motivating. I’m excited for this to happen again. Thank you, Commanders.”

For the team, the session was

part of a larger, year-round commitment to the region’s military community. Washington Salute — billed as the NFL’s first dedicated, team - run military appreciation program — hosts events throughout the year, from VIP practice experiences to game day activations and USO partnerships.

Tickets for the military appreciation day were distributed through Washington Salute, and this year’s training camp also included several public practices on earlier dates.

The day’s emphasis on fitness and competition echoed Defense Department priorities laid out by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has called for restoring a warrior ethos, raising standards — including physical fitness —

and sustaining a merit - based, combat-credible force.

“Everything starts and ends with warriors in training and on the battlefield,” Hegseth said in recent remarks, underscoring a focus on readiness, accountability and meritocracy.

Events like “Salute to Service” boot camp aren’t unique to Washington; NFL clubs across the country have worked to bring uniformed personnel onto practice fields for combine-style competitions. In past seasons, participating Marines and sailors described the purpose simply: to honor, empower and connect service members and their families — and to show appreciation in a tangible way.

To make changes to your listing or to add your unit to The Find-it Guide, please send your contact details to info@advantipro.de or call at 06371 - 98 09 050 by September 15, 2025.

The Purple Heart: America’s Oldest Medal

Did you know that the Purple Heart is America’s oldest military award? In 1782, although the Revolutionary War was basically over and peace talks were happening in Paris, Gen. George Washington needed a way to quell the talk of rebellion. Congress was running out of money after years of war against England. Troops were hungry and unpaid and there was talk of mutiny.

He decided to create the Badge of Military Merit to recognize heroic acts by his troops. The requirements for earning the badge were a lot different from today’s Purple Heart. Soldiers had to do something unusually heroic or perform some act that was essential to the success of the Continental Army. While that sounds more like something you’d have to do to earn the Medal of Honor, the badge was actually a cloth purple heart with the word “merit” stitched across it in white. So, in a way, both the Medal of Honor and

the Purple Heart came from the Badge of Military Merit.

One thing that made the badge different was that it was the first award meant for enlisted troops. Before this, the only way to recognize heroism by an enlisted soldier was to promote him, or for a general to give him a battlefield commission.

No one knows for sure how many soldiers ever received the Badge of Military Merit, though. It could be as few as three. And the book in which recipients’ names were recorded has been lost for more than 200 years.

Washington’s order was allowed to lapse after the war ended and the Purple Heart wasn’t revived until Feb. 22, 1932, on Washington’s 200th birthday. Designed by Elizabeth Will, an Army heraldic specialist, the modern medal features a profile image of Washington. Once again, the medal was awarded for meritorious service, but now soldiers could also receive it if they’d been wounded by the enemy.

The award was made retroactive — World War I soldiers who had earned certain awards could apply for the Purple Heart. The first medal was presented to Gen. Douglas MacArthur, the Army chief of staff at the time.

At first, the Purple Heart was only available to soldiers, but in 1942 Congress changed the rules for earning the award, authorizing it only for wounds, and made it available to all services, including some civilians.

Civilians who worked with the military, like Red Cross workers or war reporters, remained eligible for the award until 1997. Civilian employees of the Defense Department who are killed or wounded by an enemy now receive the Defense of Freedom Medal.

• Army Sgt. Stubby, a dog who was smuggled to Europe by members of the 102nd Infantry Regiment, earned the Purple Heart twice during World War I — once for being wounded in a gas attack and once for being wounded by a grenade.

• However, as of April 25, 1962, when President John F. Kennedy signed Executive

Order 11016 and formally established the rules for awarding the Purple Heart medal, military service animals are no longer able to receive the award.

• About 1.07 million Purple Hearts were awarded during World War II, more than were awarded in all of the other conflicts of the 20th century combined.

• Chief Nurse Beatrice Mary MacDonald was assigned to a British Clearing Hospital in Belgium during World War I. In 1917, she lost her right eye when German aircraft bombed her hospital. She received the Purple Heart for her wounds in 1936, retroactively making her the first woman to earn the award. She was also the first woman to earn the Distinguished Service Cross. MacDonald served with the Army in

Belgium and France for the rest of the war.

• One of the most famous civilians to earn the Purple Heart was Ernie Pyle, a war correspondent who covered World War II from the trenches of Europe before being killed in the Battle of Okinawa.

• Audie Murphy received the Purple Heart three times during World War II. He also received every combat award for valor available from the Army — including the Medal of Honor — as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism.

• Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Reckless, a horse, received the Purple Heart twice for wounds she received in combat during the Korean War.

• The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is in New Windsor, New York.

ATAMMC bridges the gap with mental health support for military youth

This graphic illustration depicts the Alexander T. T.

FORT BELVOIR, VA. — Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to military families through its Child and Adolescent Partial Hospitalization (CAPH) Program, a vital initiative that provides comprehensive mental health care for TRICAREeligible adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18.

For nearly 30 years, CAPH has delivered evidence-based, day-treatment mental health services in a structured, therapeutic setting, serving as a lifeline for military-connected youth facing depression, anxiety, ADHD, Autism Level I, and parentchild relational issues. By combining medical excellence with compassion and community integration, the program helps young patients stabilize and thrive without the disruption of inpatient hospitalization.

“Military families live with resilience, adaptability, and service at their core. However, the demands of military life, including frequent relocations, deployments, and reintegration stress, can significantly impact adolescent mental health,” said Dr. Kasi Patterson, Service Chief of the CAPH and Child & Adolescent Embedded Behavioral Health

Program. “Traditional outpatient care may not provide the intensity or consistency needed to support these youth, while inpatient hospitalization may be too disruptive. The CAPH bridges the gap in care by offering a high-intensity, familycentered alternative.”

Purpose Driven and Accessible

Operating Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (with early dismissal at noon on Thursdays), the CAPH offers a full day of structured programming, combining individual, group, and family therapy with therapeutic community activities tailored to meet the unique needs of each participant. Patients return home each evening, preserving essential family and school connections.

Located on the 1st floor (Sunrise Entrance) of ATAMMC, the program is open to families enrolled in both TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Standard, and there are no co-pays for military beneficiaries, including those of retired service members. For families traveling from out-of-state or overseas, the Fisher House offers free lodging, ensuring accessibility to care without added logistical or financial burden.

theory, empowering patients to take responsibility in a supportive environment that encourages emotional growth, resilience, and reintegration. An interdisciplinary care team, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, and behavioral health technicians, collaboratively supports each patient’s recovery journey.

Beyond clinical care, CAPH also plays a vital role in training the next generation of military behavioral health professionals, serving as a teaching site for psychiatry residents and fellows.

WorldClass Care for a Deserving Population

As one of the few programs of its kind within the Military Health System, ATAMMC’s CAPH continues to set the standard for adolescent mental health care across the Department of Defense.

“The program’s design allows youth to receive intensive, individualized treatment while staying connected to their family, school, and military community,” added Dr. Patterson. “It’s not just about healing, it’s about restoring confidence, relationships, and readiness at every level.”

Deidesheim Wine Festival: A highlight in the Palatinate wine festival calendar! KIRCHENKONZERT (CHURCH CONCERT)

AUG. 17, 5 P.M., ABBEY CHURCH, OTTERBERG

Enjoy and unusual and very unique style concert with Baroque trumpets at the Abbey Church! Trumpet-like instruments made of metal have been documented as early as 1500 BC in ancient Egypt. The biblical mention of the “Trumpets of Jericho” is arguably the most popular evidence of this ancient instrument. Originally, they served as signaling instruments for armies and to announce the arrival of rulers. But, art music also played a significant role in the trumpet. The trumpet achieved a status during the High Baroque period that is still unparalleled today. Around the same time, organ building also experienced a considerable boom. These instruments, which were becoming increasingly larger and richer in tone, were considered the pinnacle of instrument making, almost aristocratic! Waldemar Jankus and Dirk Wittfeld with Jens-Peter Enk at the organ will enchant you in a lively concert. Tickets: touristtourist--info@otterbachinfo@ otterbach.de

ABC IN KMC: Rock me Amadeus!

Germany and Austria have a rich legacy of producing exceptional composers, musicians, and bands who have shaped Western music through the centuries and continue to influence it today. Some from far away Berlin or Vienna, but others from just around the corner.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), celebrated for his mastery of counterpoint and harmonic architecture, laid the bedrock for Western tonal music as early as the Baroque Era.

George Frideric Handel (1685–1759) spent much of his career in Britain, but his German roots shine in works like Messiah, Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847), a child prodigy turned conductor, gave us the Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture and the oratorio Elijah, blending lyrical grace with Romantic vitality.

Richard Wagner (1813–1883) revolutionized opera with his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (total artwork), where epic cycles like The Ring of the Nibelung and Tristan und Isolde forever altered harmonic language and musical drama.

Richard Strauss (1864–1949) was famous for tone poems such as Thus Spoke Zarathustra and Don Juan.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born in 1756 in Salzburg, Austria, became the prototype of rock’s future icons. With his rebellious character, he defined what a musician could be — touring, innovating, scandalizing and inspiring. He walked away from prestigious positions when denied creative freedom, was a womanizer, portrayed a rock-star behavior centuries ahead of its time and died at the age of 35.

Ludwig van Beethoven stands unique for the German-Austrian musical connection. Born in Bonn, Germany in 1770, he died in Vienna, Austria in 1827 at the age of 56. Being a German composer and pianist, and one of the most revered figures in the history of Western music, his works rank among the most performed of the classical music repertoire and span the

transition from the classical period to the romantic era.

Marlene Dietrich

Born Marie Magdalene Dietrich in 1901 in Berlin Schöneberg, began her career on the Weimar cabaret circuit and in silent films. Her portrayal of Lola Lola in Josef von Sternberg’s “Der blaue Engel” (The Blue Angel, 1930) catapulted her to international stardom and led to a Paramount Pictures contract in Hollywood.

She relocated to the United States in the early 1930s, starring in a string of Hollywood features. Renouncing Nazism, she became a U.S. citizen in 1937 and was one of the highest-paid actresses of the era. Beyond films, Marlene was renowned for her cabaret-style singing. She toured extensively, recording songs like “Lili Marleen” that resonated on both sides of the Atlantic. During World War II, she entertained Allied troops on the front lines, raised morale through USO shows, and actively supported war relief efforts.

The Lion King and Gladiator

As one of today’s most prolific film composers, Hans Zimmer from Frankfurt scores for The Lion King, Gladiator, Inception, Dunkirk and the Dark Knight trilogy and blends electronic and orchestral textures, influencing a generation of soundtrack artists.

Rock you like a hurricane

The Scorpions formed in Hannover in the mid-1970s and quickly became Germany’s foremost hard-rock export. Over a career span of five decades, they’ve released 18 studio albums and sold over 100 million records worldwide. Their signature blend of soaring melodies and crunchy riffs has earned them a place among rock’s most enduring acts.

Their greatest hits include Wind of Change (1989) that peaked at number four, spending 25 weeks on the U.S. billboard chart. Rock You Like a Hurricane (1984), is a hard-rock staple featuring one of rock’s most recognizable riffs.

The Scorpions finally cracked the American market with their 1982 album Blackout. Among the first Western rock bands behind the Iron Curtain, introducing heavy metal to a new audience, the Scorpions starred at the Leningrad and Moscow Music Peace Festival in 1988. In the mid-1980s they

also held concerts at Madison Square Garden, with three sold-out nights at the iconic New York venue.

Rammstein

The group Rammstein, originally from East Berlin, is said to have made a mistake by adding an additional “m” to their band name, very much resembling “Ramstein.” The band is considered to be “industrial fire starters” with their harsh and industrial metal sound. The group was founded by guitarist Richard Z. Kruspe, who envisioned a fusion of heavy guitars and machinelike precision. The classic lineup with Till Lindemann has remained unchanged since inception in 1994.

Autobahn

A further group, said to be the pioneers of electronic music, and founded in Düsseldorf in 1970, is Kraftwerk. Kraftwerk’s greatest hit in the USA was Autobahn, which reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975. The 22-minute minimalistic electronic journey resembled a ride down the Autobahn, which we can all refer to! The radio version was trimmed down to three minutes, but helped pave the way for electronic music in mainstream pop. Kraftwerk received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.

Red balloons

Fronted by Gabriele “Nena” Kerner, the band Nena became an international sensation when their anti-Cold War anthem “99 Luftballons” climbed to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984. Its English version, 99 Red Balloons, cemented their place in MTV era pop history.

At a Rolling Stones concert in West Berlin in 1983, guitarist Carlo Karges saw balloons released into the sky. He imagined what might happen if they floated over the Berlin Wall and were mistaken for a threat. It became a Cold War anthem because it captured the paranoia, absurdity, and tragic consequences of global tensions during that era.

Zedd

Russian-German producer Anton “Zedd” Zaslavski, raised in Kaiserslautern,

weaponized his classical roots and EDM sensibility to create crossover hits like “Clarity,” which peaked as number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The track won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording, paving the way for producers as headline acts. Zedd has worked with artists like Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Troye Sivan, and Lady Gaga.

Musikantenland

Mackenbach earned its nickname as a “Musikanten-Dorf” (village) by sending thousands of musicians around the globe and the Westpfalz region has a long legacy of wandering musicians. Mackenbach is hosting the Musikantenlandtag on Aug. 23.

Let’s get together and feel all right!

While Kaiserslautern may not be famed as a hotspot for large-scale concerts, it has played host to a few standout performances worth remembering.

In 1983 the Monsters of Rock Festival took place at Betzenberg stadium (now Fritz-Walter-Stadion), featuring bands such as, Whitesnake, Twisted Sister, Thin Lizzy, Saxon, Motörhead, Meat Loaf, Blue Öyster Cult. It was a milestone event in Germany’s rock history, bringing the raw energy of British and American heavy metal to a roaring crowd in Kaiserslautern.

Another concert at the stadium was during Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk Tour. One of the scheduled bands had to cancel at short notice and was replaced by a surprise guest. The audience of over 20,000 couldn’t believe their eyes, when legendary, one and only, Bob Marley and his Wailers suddenly appeared on the stage on June 8, 1980! A lifetime memory for the fans, as he tragically died in Miami just months later in May 1981. The author of this article was in the lucky crowd that day!

“Rock Me Amadeus,” by singer Falco from Vienna became the first and only German-language song to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in March 1986. The lyrics: “He was a rock star, a punk and loved women. Women adored him too and always cried out c’mon rock me Amadeus!” Full text: https://genius.com/ Genius-english-translations-falco-rockme-amadeus-english-translation-lyrics

Back to school means sharing the road

August 18 marks the first day of school for the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Large crowds of students populate the streets while parents rush to drop their kids off for school.

With that in mind, it’s important to remember school days bring congestion;

children on bikes are quickly rushing to get to school before the tardy bell rings and school buses are making stops to pick up passengers.

“Please plan ahead and expect high traffic volumes, limited parking around the Ramstein schools, and delays at the gates,” said Jennifer Hahn, 86th Mission Support Group School Liaison Officer. “Be careful and watch out for people on the

sidewalks and buses making their way to the schools.”

Hahn said traffic safety is crucial, both vehicular and pedestrian, and children should be sure to use a crosswalk when crossing streets and wait until vehicles come to a complete stop before crossing.

“Ensure your child understands not to walk, stand, or cross the street directly before or behind a bus,” Hahn said.

“Follow your school’s pick-up and drop-off procedures and if you are unsure on the procedure, contact your child’s school.”

It is increasingly important for drivers to slow down and pay attention when children are present — especially before and after school.

To heighten safety, extra security forces patrols are on site to ensure safety and assist with traffic flow.

Remember these bus safety dos and don’ts

Meeting children at the bus stop, parents:

DO …

• Wait on the same side of the street as the bus stop.

• Go to your child at the bus stop.

DO NOT …

• Wait in a parked car or in a building.

• Wait across the street from the bus stop.

• Allow your child to come to you.

• Board the bus without proper authority (only registered students, bus driver, security attendant and school officials are authorized to board a school bus).

Bottom line: When you meet your child at the bus stop, please take charge of the situation. As the adult, you can reduce the risk to your child and control the danger.

Danger Zones:

Educate your child on the danger zones as shown on the picture. We ask that you and your child take extra precautions when near a school bus.

Teach them to never cross in front of or behind a bus. Reinforce to your child that traffic

in Europe does not stop for loading and unloading of school buses.

Stress good behavior on the bus — good behavior and safety go handinhand. On or around buses, students must conduct themselves in accordance with the following school bus rules:

DODEA behavior standards for students:

• Obey the driver or adult.

• Enter and exit the bus safely, and always show your bus pass.

• Stay properly seated and use seat belts when available.

• Keep your hands, feet, and other body parts to yourself.

• Do not throw things.

• Put nothing out the window.

• Remain quiet and do not disturb the driver or others.

• No profanity, indecency, smoking, prohibited items or vandalism.

• Do not eat, drink or chew gum.

• Be responsible and be safe.

Five basic safety rules for riding the bus:

• Be on time. Walk, do not run, to the bus stop.

• When waiting for the bus, take at least three large steps away from the curb.

• Take your seat on the bus and stay in it while the bus is moving. If there are seat belts, buckle up.

• When getting off the bus, take three large steps away from the curb and wait for the bus to depart before crossing the street.

• Never cross the street in front or behind the bus.

Ensure children know and use the safest

route possible from home to and from the bus stop. Teach children how to safely cross the street and use pedestrian crosswalks and trafficlighted intersections, where available. Students must present his/her bus pass to the driver while boarding the bus.

Ensure children wear clothing that is easily visible to motorists. You greatly improve the children’s visibility when you put reflective tape or devices on your children’s outerwear, book bags or other carried items.

City of Wiesbaden Fire Department showcases bilingual emergency dispatch capabilities, garrison coordination

Wiesbaden Fire Department dispatcher Patricia Hardt demonstrates the capabilities of the ProQA standardized query system at the City of Wiesbaden’s Fire Station 1 in Wiesbaden, June 26. The system can seamlessly switch between German and English and provides stepbystep guidance for situations such as childbirth and CPR.

WIESBADEN – On June 24, Col. Troy Danderson, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, visited the City of Wiesbaden’s Fire Department for a routine information exchange and to discuss current capabilities with interim Fire Chief Dirk Schwarz and U.S. liaison officer Sven Janneck.

The City of Wiesbaden Fire Department is a vital emergency support partner of USAG Wiesbaden. In addition to collaborating with the garrison’s fire department on fire and rescue operations, they also handle emergency call dispatching duties for all fire and medical emergencies across the city. It also coordinates pre-hospital emergency care, including ambulance services and patient transport to medical facilities.

To strengthen collaboration and address outstanding issues, information exchanges happen routinely between the garrison and host nation emergency response partners on multiple levels to ensure effective cooperation.

Collis Jeppesen, garrison deputy fire chief, and Karin Morrell, assistant fire chief for prevention, joined Col. Danderson for their visit at Fire Station 1 in downtown Wiesbaden, home to the fire brigade’s command team and the central dispatch center.

The visit focused on discussing emer-

gency dispatch procedures and capabilities. Wiesbaden’s Fire Department serves over 300,000 residents through three professional fire stations staffed by 300 firefighters, as well as 20 volunteer fire stations with 650 volunteers.

With seven rescue stations, housing a total of 31 ambulances, three hospitals with emergency rooms, and one pediatric emergency room –Wiesbaden offers extensive rescue resources.

“The topic of emergency calls is very prominent in our community,” Danderson said. “In addition to our internal emergency numbers for the Military Police and DES, it’s especially important for those living off-post to know the German emergency number, 112. Some community members have concerns about making an emergency call in English.”

The fire brigade’s central dispatch center directly accommodates U.S. citizens living in the area with features many Americans may not be aware of.

“To increase accessibility, callers can also dial 911 on their cell phones and be automatically redirected to us. This improves safety in stressful situations where the caller might not remember the European emergency number –112,” said Schwarz.

The highest priority of the dispatchers is to localize the caller and send adequate help. This ensures that personnel arrive on scene even if the phone call gets interrupted. To achieve this, a technique called Advanced

Mobile Location (AML) can be used to submit the caller’s smartphone GPS or Wi-Fi data right into the dispatch for localization. As soon as the caller’s location is known, the dispatcher assesses the incident.

“Our control center operates using a standardized query software with a catalog of questions. The system, called ProQA, was developed in the U.S. In medical emergencies, precise symptom queries allow us to generate reports and dispatch [additional] qualified help, may it be the fire department or an ambulance or an emergency doctor,” Schwarz explained, as the team showcased the dispatch center’s structures and processes.

The dispatch center handles more than 300,000 emergency calls annually, resulting in approximately 100,000 fire and rescue deployments. To overcome language barriers, the dispatchers can use a special feature.

“Our staff undergoes regular medical training and are skilled in handling emergency calls in foreign languages. English is widely spoken in our department, and with just one click, our emergency call system can switch to English. This simplifies communication and ensures that assistance is provided quickly and accurately,” said Janneck, emphasizing the high training standards and professionalism of their team.

Part of the demonstration included observing dispatcher Patricia Hardt while she handled

a live emergency query at her desk.

“Our system is highly capable. We can assess various symptoms in English and even provide precise instructions over the phone for situations like childbirth or cardiopulmonary resuscitation,” Hardt said. “As soon as sufficient information is available, help can be dispatched simultaneously, even while the caller is still on the line. This saves valuable time.”

In the fire department’s courtyard, Schwarz led the final portion of the visit by showcasing a special vehicle – Command Vehicle 2 (Einsatzleitwagen 2). Equipped with a communication system similar to the central dispatch center, the vehicle specializes in managing larger incidents.

“This command vehicle provides space to lead emergencies on-site and communicate with central dispatch,” Janneck said. “Maintaining resiliency is crucial and having multiple fallback solutions ensures we can continue dispatching and communicating with our units under any conditions.”

Expressing his gratitude for the department’s ongoing coordination with the garrison, Danderson reiterated, “It’s reassuring to know we have such a capable mission partner at our side during the worst situations. The team does an excellent job overcoming challenges and providing adequate help. Their resilience and preparedness to act under all circumstances are truly impressive.”

German, US military medical leaders meet to discuss interoperability, cooperation

KOBLENZ — U.S. Army Brigadier General Roger Giraud (left), commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and director of Defense Health Network Europe recently met with Major General (Dr.) Backus, (right) Commander of the newly established German Bundeswehr Health Care Command and Deputy Surgeon General for the Bundeswehr. The meeting aimed to deepen bilateral military medical cooperation and explore formal partnership opportunities between U.S. and German medical forces. This productive meeting further solidified the shared commitment to advancing U.S. and German military medical cooperation and set conditions for expanded interoperability in future multinational operations. The German Bundeswehr Health Care Command (Kommando Sanitätsdienstliche Einsatzunterstützung) located in Koblenz is responsible for providing medical support to the Bundeswehr, both in Germany and during deployments abroad.

Explore Babelsberg palace and park

which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites), which is the highest number of palaces per inhabitant in Germany. It has a marvelous city center, green space galore, charming neighborhoods, and was also recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Film thanks to its rich history of cinematography and being home to one of the first silent movies in 1912. Here are four ideas for where to start your Potsdam adventure.

Explore the architecture of Potsdam’s city center In Potsdam’s city center, you’ll find no shortage of impressive architecture. Visit the Nikolai Church, built in 1830 and known for its copper dome. It was badly damaged during World War II in a British air raid and by Soviet artillery, but restorations have made it like new.

St. Peter and Paul Church is made of a lovely yellow brick and has a beautiful interior where visitors can find three paintings by the Baroque artist Antoine Pesne. It was originally designed to have two bell towers, but after the death of the first architect the design was changed to have one Italian-styled tower, despite the church’s other Byzantine and Romanesque aspects.

The Brandenburg Gate is a must-see, and it’s not the one in Berlin you’re thinking of. Potsdam’s Brandenburg Gate is both older and smaller, but no less impressive. It has two distinct architectural sides, one designed by a student and the other by his teacher.

The historic Schiffbauergasse (https://schiffbauergasse.de/), a downtown area where steamships were once built, is more than an old industrial lot. Today, it offers an incredible cultural scene with different concerts, dance venues, art galleries, restaurants, and the Hans Otto Theater.

On the banks of the Havel River sits a majestic English Gothic palace. It was originally built in 1833 for Emperor William I, who was at the time of construction still the prince of Prussia, as a summer palace and used as such for over fifty years. When he was appointed King of Prussia, Babelsberg Palace (https://www.spsg.de/schloesser-gaerten/objekt/schlossbabelsberg) was expanded and was a central spot for social and political activity in Prussia.

Today visitors come to see the terraces and magnificent gardens, with active water features from April to October. The castle itself is an architectural marvel – stunning on both the inside and outside, and has a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.

Forget your worries in the stunning Sanssouci palace and park

Let yourself be swept away in the majesty and splendor of the Sanssouci Palace (https:// www.spsg.de/en/palaces-gardens/object/sanssouci-palace). Literally translating from the French “without worries,” this charming castle was built in 1745 for Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. It was constructed in a Rococo style with six terraced vineyards and a sprawling garden, and deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. Both the palace itself and the garden are unmissable while in Potsdam.

Additionally, visit the nearby Bildergalerie, a museum full of the collected arts of Frederick the Great and the oldest preserved museum in all of Germany. Not only is the art stunning, but the architecture and interior design are delicately beautiful in accordance with the Rococo style.

Immerse yourself in the charming Dutch Quarter

For lovers of cute stores, pubs, restaurants, and cafes, the Holländisches Viertel, or Dutch Quarter (https://www.berlin.de/en/attractions-and-sights/3561649-3104052-dutch-quarter-in-potsdam.en.html), is the place to be. Constructed in 1742 for Dutch settlers in Potsdam, the district covers four squares and includes 150 red brick buildings. It is a cozy spot to spend a bit of quiet time while still remaining near to the hustle and bustle of the city.

Close by you will find the Lindenstraße Memorial, which is a former prison that bears testimony to persecution and violence in Germany under the Nazis, the Soviets, and the Stasi. Exhibitions and tours are available.

Getting
