“The march is physically and mentally challenging,” said Maj. Sean Miller, 1 CBCS event participant. “It required disciplined preparation and a significant amount of resiliency during the event. We worked as a team from start to finish and it was evident by the way we finished. We were one of the only U.S. detachments to walk across the finish line with everyone who started.”

The team was led by Capt. Austin Meyer, who participated in 2024.

“Nijmegen 2024 started as a personal challenge of grit and disciplined training,” said Meyer. “After accomplishing it the first time, I knew I wanted to come back and lead a team to finish.”

The preparation and training began long before the ruck march ever began.

“Fortunately, the U.S. has a volunteer-led delegation that begins planning the logistics of the next iteration after collecting information for the after-action report from the most recent march,” said Meyer. “Teams can monitor their website for information on registration, training guidance, etcetera.”

The international event provided opportunities to connect with Allies and partners and build comradery.

“Mission partner integration and global military integration is another outcome from

this march,” said Miller. “For 12 hours a day you’re walking and talking to your peers in NATO and beyond. The opportunities to engage while we all are either having the time of our lives, or suffering, humanize us and build ties.”

The four-day event equated to walking a marathon distance each day.

“The starting time to ruck each day ranged from 0330 to 0600 and you have until 1630 to be in line to return to the camp,” said Meyer. “Managing your time at the beginning of each day is important as you prioritize getting the right fuel, blister care, and sleep. Throughout the ruck, there are opportunities to pull over in a town for a quick break or enjoy the snacks and water stations that the local Dutch provide. Each community you walk through will have locals playing music and standing along the route ready to give you a high-five.”

The event hosted participants from 11 years old to 91 years old. The variety of participants had a myriad of connections to the event, highlighting the unique experience of the march.

“Personally, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Miller. “My paternal family is from Nijmegen. Throughout the week, they met our team along the route and cheered us on. On the final day, walking up Via Gladiola, I was able to share the success and several

tears with them as they adorned my ruck with gladiolas – I don’t know where else I would’ve been able to share that experience.”

The effort the team put into the event and the backing from their support network led the team to the finish line, 106 miles from the start.

“I would like to shout-out my entire team, Maj. Sean Miller, 1st Lt. Chandler Herren, Tech. Sgt. Eric Cha, Tech. Sgt. Aaron Field, Staff Sgt. Albert Jhon “AJ” Nofuente, Staff Sgt. Brittany Savage, Staff Sgt. Aaron Spreitzer, Senior Airman Nicolas Gonzalez, Senior Airman Henry Lowry, Senior Airman Gibson Tendrich, and Senior Airman Alexander Xayasounethone, for making the commit-

ment to train for months and their perseverance over the course of four days, as it led to us being in a select group of U.S. teams that finished with the same amount of people we started with,” said Meyer. “Additionally, thank you to our team orderly 2nd Lt. Vincent Cimaglia for supporting us and ensuring we had what we needed, when we needed it along the route.”

For members interested in participating in 2026, Meyer offered advice for training.

“For teams or individuals interested in Nijmegen 2026, I recommend beginning training in February with a 5km-10km and ramp up with weekly rucks leading into May with a back-to-back 20 miler,” said Meyer.

Suicide Prevention Month highlights resources, seeks to reduce stigma in Military

As the U.S. military observes Suicide Prevention Month in September there is a renewed focus on destigmatizing behavioral health care and promoting available resources for servicemembers and their families.

“Suicide remains a persistent concern within the military community,” said U.S. Army Col. Matthew Garrido, director of psychological health for Medical Readiness Command, Europe. “While the reasons are complex and multifaceted, factors such as deployment stressors, combat experiences, and difficulty reintegrating into civilian life can contribute to behavioral health challenges and increased risk.”

According to military behavioral health officials, DOD has invested heavily in a range of programs aimed at addressing these issues, including counseling services, peer support networks, and crisis hotlines.

“Our service members and their families face unique challenges,” added Garrido. “We are committed to providing them with the resources they need and fostering an environment where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness.”

Throughout September, U.S.

a recent radio interview with

U.S. Army Col.

psychological

program consultant for Medical Readiness Command Europe and Dr. Jamie Moore, behavioral health service lead for Defense Health Network Europe (right photo), emphasized the significance of Suicide Prevention Month, highlighting the critical need for awareness and intervention. The trio discussed the unique stressors faced by military servicemembers and their families, underscoring the importance of proactively reaching out for help when struggling. They also provided a comprehensive overview of the various resources available, ranging from mental health professionals and support groups to confidential counseling services, ensuring listeners understood they are not alone, and that accessible help is within reach for those who need it.

military installations worldwide will host events and activities designed to raise awareness about suicide prevention. These include workshops on recognizing warning signs, training on intervention strategies, and opportunities to connect with behavioral health professionals.

“A key component of the strategy is reducing the stigma associated with seeking behavioral health care,” said Danielle BegaSilva, family advocacy program

consultant for Medical Readiness Command Europe. “Many service members worry that admitting they need help could damage their careers or be perceived negatively by their peers. We are working to combat these perceptions, to emphasize the importance of mental well-being and to highlight the fact that seeking help is a sign of courage and self-awareness.”

Another key component of behavioral health is the human connection element, something that is commonly overlooked.

“It is great that there are so many external resources available to service members and their families, but the real first line of defense is each other,” added BegaSilva. “The human connection is so important. In the age of social media, it is easy to talk to someone across the world, yet we don’t take the time to get to know our neighbors, coworkers, and others right next to us. A simple hello and a smile in the hallway can go a long

way in connecting with others and helping them to feel like they can reach out to you. Family members are also a crucial part of the support network. They are often the first to notice changes in behavior or mood that could indicate a service member is struggling.

“We want service members and their families to know they are not alone and that a variety of support resources exist,” said Dr. Jamie Moore, behavioral health lead for Defense Health Network Europe. “Through the Defense Health Agency’s Targeted Care Initiative, we aim to more quickly connect individuals with the best support resource to meet their needs, whether that is a Military Family and Life Counselor, a Chaplain, financial counseling, the Behavioral Health Clinic, or another service. Do not wait until you are in crisis to take care of your behavioral health.”

The U.S. military recognizes and understands that suicide prevention is an ongoing effort that requires a sustained commitment.

“By promoting awareness, providing access to resources, and reducing stigma, our goal is to create a culture where servicemembers and their families feel empowered to seek help and support each other,” added Garrido.

US, Allied aircraft sharpen readiness in Norway

ØRLAND AIR BASE, NORWAY

Three U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers assigned to the 345th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron deployed in support of Bomber Task Force Europe at Ørland, Norway, Aug. 12.

The bombers, assigned to Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, deployed with a total force integration team composed of roughly 30 percent active-duty and 70 percent Reserve Airmen under the command of the 489th Bomb Group.

Routine deployments, like BTF 25-4B, sharpen warfighting

readiness by training in conditions shaped by anti-access and area denial threats), where freedom of maneuver could be limited.

“We’re training for today’s modern warfare,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Eric Alvarez, 345th Bomb Squadron commander. “There are challenging obstacles – whether on the ground, in the air and beyond – areas that may not allow freedom of maneuver. Ultimately, we are preparing to be resilient and postured for the future.”

By training under these conditions in this geographical area, U.S. and Allied forces enhance survivability, improve joint integration, and demonstrate the ability to operate freely and target effectively

in complex, high-threat airspace.

“We have the F-35, which is a multi-role fighter jet, which you might say is a jack-of-all-trades, master of none,” said Royal Norwegian Air Force Maj. Morgan, acting 332nd Squadron commander. “We are able to defend other aircraft, we are also able to drop weapons onto the ground. Whereas the B-1 is more specific and has long range and highspeed capabilities. Hopefully we are able to be there with the F-35 to assist in fulfilling the role of the B-1 and help by protecting them but also have their support in the air-to-surface portion of warfare training.”

The mission exercised how

345th EBS Airmen train with NATO Allies to find, fix, track, and target threats, a tactical process called F2T2, in real time to counter A2AD conditions.

“A2AD is like a protective layer an adversary puts around itself,” said Capt. Lane Musgrave, 345th EBS project officer. “They want us to stay outside that layer, and we want to be able to get inside it to employ our effects.”

He goes on to explain that’s what they’re here to train on.

“The B-1B Lancer can’t get close enough alone to poke a hole in that layer, but the F-35s can,” said Musgrave. “So, this Ally-led training with the Royal Norwegian Air Force is incredibly important.”

Training under NATO Ally leadership and preparing for shared challenges across the region builds lasting security. It reflects our commitment to strengthening relationships and reinforcing readiness through sustained cooperation.

“This training is vital—not only for refining our skills, tactics, and procedures, but also for strengthening our relationships with Allied partners,” said Alvarez. “It allows us to build familiarity, identify and address weaknesses, and enhance our overall proficiency. Ultimately, it makes us better, more capable personnel, and more adaptable as a force.”

Taking stings out of summer fun

Bees, with more than 25,000 species, have a critical role in nature, as well as commerce. They are responsible not just for honey, their winter food, but for pollinating food crops, as well as flowers.

Wasps and hornets are also important as they hunt down aphids, caterpillars, and other pests that destroy plants and flowers — including crops.

Epidemiology

For many, a bee, hornet, or wasp sting is just unpleasant; but for others, it can be fatal.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that more than 1,100 people were stung from 2000 to 2017; For about 62 people per year, it was fatal. The CDC reported the majority of deaths, about 80 percent, were males.

While estimates vary, the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology estimates that insect sting allergies (includes fire ants, etc.) affect 5 percent of the population.

Severe Cases

Sting reactions can range from mild reactions to severe.

Bees can only sting once, but hornets and wasps can sting repeatedly. A sting’s

usual effect is pain, swelling, and redness around the strike area. Sometimes, more swelling will develop over a day or two. The pain may take a couple of hours to resolve.

More severe reaction can involve hives, a lot of itching, difficulty breathing, throat and tongue swelling, rapid pulse, a drop in blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and even a change or loss of consciousness, which is called anaphylactic shock.

Treatment and Response

If you’re attacked by a bee, wasp or hornet, run inside or, if you can’t do that, go toward a shaded area.

You want to get away from where the stinging insect is and where more could congregate. Don’t swat at them as that can stimulate them to sting, and you’re spending your energy in the same area, not in running away.

Jumping into water may not work as some stinging insects will hover above the surface, waiting.

If you are stung by a bee, and you can see the stinger, remove the stinger using tweezers, your fingernails, or even the edge of a credit card.

Wash the affected area with soap and water to decrease risk of infection.

If you’re stung on an arm or leg, elevate it to decrease throbbing swelling, and apply ice as soon as you can, which will reduce pain,

swelling and inflammation.

You can put half, or even full-strength ammonia, onto the sting site. That seems to neutralize at least some of the venom.

Taking an antihistamine (e.g., diphenhydramine) can help, as can ibuprofen, and applying calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream.

Avoid scratching the site to avoid chance of infection.

According to the CDC, individuals who know they are allergic to stings and insect bites should carry epinephrine autoinjectors into areas there may be bees, wasps or hornets.

They should also tell family members and coworkers that they are allergic and how to inject the dose.

Remember, autoinjectors expire and should be kept out of extreme temperatures. Avoid storing them in your vehicle glove compartment. You should also consider wearing a medical alert bracelet.

Prevention

Besides the obvious recommendation of avoiding flying, stinging insect, there are some other precautions you can take.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends wearing lighter color clothing that covers the body, as well avoiding perfumed soaps, deodorants, and shampoos, cologne, or perfumes. Staying away from flowering plants (where flying insects look for nectar), and any discarded food also decreases risk.

For anyone who had a severe reaction, with or without anaphylaxis, your primary care manager may refer you to an allergist to confirm your allergies and potentially start you on desensitizing immunotherapy (allergy shots). That can greatly reduce or eliminate risk of life-threatening reactions to future stings.

We need bees, wasps, and hornets, but treat them with a healthy level of respect and be prepared.

US Senate Committee on Appropriations professional staffers visit Coleman APS-2 worksite

Cameron Porter 405th Army Field Support BrigadeEurope & Africa

MANNHEIM – Two professional staff members from the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Defense, conducted a site visit and key leader engagement at the Coleman Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 worksite, recently.

Greeting U.S. Senate staff delegates Alexa Lorick and Kim Segura at the APS-2 worksite in Mannheim was the commander of Army Field Support Battalion-Germany, Lt. Col. Jon Neal. Also there to assist with questions and provide their expertise were Chief Warrant Officer 4 Harvey Alipio, Coleman’s senior ordnance maintenance warrant officer, and Arnoldo Montiel, Coleman’s director of supply, plus others.

According to an informational briefing provided to the 405th Army Field Support Brigade from AFSBn-Germany, the battalion commander hosted Lorick and Segura Aug. 13, along with several AFSBn-Germany employees and contractors from Coleman. Neal and the Coleman team provided Lorick and Segura with information on the APS-2 site’s historical and strategic significance, both for NATO and for U.S. Army Europe and Africa. They also gave Lorick and Segura insight into the operational capabilities of the site and current challenges, such as outdoor storage.

During the tour of the APS-2 site, Lorick and Segura observed maintenance operations on various tactical wheeled vehicles plus M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, M1 Abrams Main Battle Tanks and more. The discussion between AFSBn-Germany and the Senate staffers highlighted the utilization of APS-2 equipment for rotations and exercises but also emphasized its importance in

maintaining Army readiness and supporting emergent requirements.

The Coleman APS-2 worksite is one of six APS-2 worksites in Europe. Besides Coleman, there is also an APS-2 worksite in Dülmen, Germany, under the mission command of AFSBn-Germany. Other APS-2 worksites located across Europe include Eygelshoven, Netherlands; Zutendaal, Belgium; Livorno, Italy; and Powidz, Poland.

Battalion Germany is one of four APS-2 battalions under the command and control of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade.

The 405th AFSB’s APS-2 program provides turn-key power projection packages ready to deploy at a moment’s notice while helping to reduce the amount of equipment needed from the deploying forces’ home stations.

APS-2 sites like Coleman help reduce deployment timelines, improve deterrence capabilities and provide additional combat power for contingency operations.

The 405th AFSB is the premier logistics integrator and synchronizer for U.S. European Command, enabling readiness solutions to ‘Support the Warrior’ by operationalizing U.S. Army Materiel Command capabilities and delivering readiness within the U.S. Army Europe and Africa areas of responsibility at the point of need.

The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging AMC’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces.

Vigilance first: USAG Rheinland-Pfalz drives Antiterrorism awareness in Germany’s most

complex footprint

August is Antiterrorism Awareness Month, and U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz is leading the fight in protecting the community and preserving combat power. Serving the largest population of U.S. citizens outside the continental United States, the garrison educates and trains Soldiers, civilians and communities to remain vigilant and be proactive against potential threats.

Antiterrorism awareness and training is not confined to one month. It’s a year-round priority, said Dennis Mathis, security specialist with USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security.

In July, the garrison Protection Team teamed up with the U.S. Air Force 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron, the 86th Security Forces Squadron from Ramstein Air Base and German Polizei to put its counter-unmanned aircraft systems capabilities to the test. The exercise focused on interagency communication and coordination during a realistic drone threat. Reflecting the Army’s proactive approach, the service is investing in and experimenting with emerging technology, in close partnership with industry, to stay ahead of evolving threats and maintain readiness for future challenges.

Mathis expressed the importance of constant vigilance. “We can never afford to let our guard down,” he said. “Complacency is the enemy, and we have to stay sharp.”

That same focus carried over into August, when the garrison led an enhanced protection exercise across its expansive and complex footprint that spans over 100 miles across from point to point and half as deep. Teams and agencies across the garrison synchronized efforts to detect and respond to threats and secure critical assets under increased security conditions, all while maintaining daily operations.

Soldiers, civilians, Air Force security forces and local German Polizei worked side by side to implement troop diversions, deploying barriers, manning access control points and vehicle checkpoints, conducting searches and reacting to simulated threats in real time with Quick Response Forces.

“This exercise is about more than procedures; it is about stress testing our systems, assessing ourselves and validating our ability to protect our communities when it matters,” said Maj. Gen. Michael Lalor, commanding general, 21st TSC, and senior responsible officer for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz.

“Our Soldiers, working alongside the garrison, joint and host nation partners displayed the expertise, adaptability and teamwork needed to accomplish the mission.”

With 26 geographically separated sites spread across Germany, securing the garrison’s footprint requires deliberate coordination, synchronization and teamwork from over 30 tenant units, agencies and supported communities.

Emily Roemer, garrison Antiterrorism Officer, emphasized the

importance of joint, combined planning and training to protect the safety and security of all communities within the garrison’s area of responsibility.

“These combined training events prove that when a threat comes, our people are ready,” said Roemer.

Roemer continues to amplify antiterrorism awareness to the broader community. During a live AFN Kaiserslautern radio interview, she explained why Antiterrorism Awareness Month matters and how every individual plays a role in preventing threats.

“Leaders must integrate antiterrorism into all planning and activities to protect missions and personnel by preventing attacks,” said Roemer. “Every member of the Army community shares responsibility for building and sustaining these protection programs.”

According to Michael Hawthorne, USAG RheinlandPfalz antiterrorism officer and recipient of the Lieutenant Colonel Ronald C. Francis Best Antiterrorism Program Manager Award for 2022, the garrison seeks to exceed Army standards in its approach to antiterrorism.

Air Force Special Operations Wing conducts bilateral exercise in Romania

U.S. Special Operations Command Europe Department of Defense Public Affairs

U.S. special operations forces collaborated with Romanian allies during a bilateral exercise to boost NATO readiness in Europe through aerial drills at Boboc Air Base, Romania, July 11-25.

Romanian special operations forces, along with the 53rd Commando Battalion and the U.S. Air Force’s 352nd Special Operations Wing at Royal Air Force Mildenhall, U.K., worked to enhance joint operational capabilities through free-fall jumps, low-level flying, infiltration and exfiltration drills, and the establishment of ground refueling points.

“We’re working with their ground forces, rotary forces and fixed-wing forces,” said the mission commander for the 352nd SOW. “The big goal in this instance is helping the Romanians improve [air capabilities] and interoperability.”

Over the course of two weeks, the allied nations executed joint airdrops and infiltration scenarios across multiple landscapes. Over 500 Romanian jumpers conducted free-fall operations, supported by

U.S. MC-130J Commando II and Romanian C-27J Spartan aircraft. Concurrently, the Air Force’s 100th Air Refueling Wing established and operated ground refueling points in support of Romanian IAR-330 Puma helicopters.

A combined team of 10 Romanian and 15 U.S. aircrews demonstrated formation flying, lowlevel approaches, and short-field landing drills during day and nighttime operations, sharpening their ability to operate side by side in complex environments.

“As we look at what [U.S. Special Operations Command Europe], NATO and our allies are doing, I think we’re learning it’s good to have friends in a lot of places,” the mission commander said.

Exercises like this continue to strengthen joint capabilities through unity, readiness and trust, enabling allies to respond quickly and effectively in times of crisis.

“We’ve been training, we’ve standardized our tactics. It makes it easier if a conflict ever comes up,” he said. “It makes us more effective, because then you have the might of multiple countries going at one enemy or one problem set.”

Since 1958 more than 400 billion LEGO bricks have been produced. ABC IN KMC: Chilly Challenge

This year the summer hasn’t been as hot as meteorologists had expected, but if you’re in for a real deep freeze, at -70° C (-94° F), join us on an exciting trip to the seventh continent!

This week we will take you on a blood chilling journey with a historic landing on Ross Island, Antarctica, about 16,700 kilometers (10,400 miles) away from the Kaiserslautern American Community. The author of this article met Master Sergeant (R) Lawrence Page on a recent trip to Antarctica. Page is familiar with the Kaiserslautern Military Community, loves Nanstein Castle in Landstuhl and was eager to share his story about an extraordinary mission during his military career.

Since 1956 the United States has carried out supply missions to Antarctica under the code name “Operation Deep Freeze.” The missions have ensured a continuous U.S. presence in Antarctica and safeguarded supplying researchers with equipment and needed resources, mainly at McMurdo station.

McMurdo Station is a coastal station at the southern tip of Ross Island, about 3,864 km (2,415 miles) south of Christchurch, New Zealand, and 1,360 km (850 miles) north of the South Pole. It is the largest scientific research station and up to 1,200 scientists are on site in the summer months. During the harsh winter when temperatures go down to -62° Celsius (-81° Fahrenheit) accompanied by fierce winds, the population goes down to about 200 people. And, this is where our icy story sets in late August 2007.

The 446th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron from McChord Air Force Base,

had to be met, paperwork coordinated, emails needed to be sent, and weather conditions had to be evaluated before the mission could be launched. Meanwhile the Pegasus White Ice Runway had been partially disassembled and needed to be put back in place, while air traffic controllers and forecasters also had to be on stand-by and prepared for a quick turnaround under unfavorable circumstances.

The pilots and flight crew were soon ready to head out on a bold venture together with two critical care nurses and three medical technicians, all trained to provide basic care all the way up to advanced life support care. According to record, the patient was in very critical, although not in life-threatening situation, but urgently needed surgery within 48 hours.

The C-17 Globemaster III quickly transformed into a mixed cargo and patient transport aircraft, while the medical team prepared and checked their equipment for the patient pickup in icy terrain. Two snow caterpillars that couldn’t be delivered on the last regular flight were loaded for practical reasons and as an example of multi-purpose mission planning.

On the second approach the clouds lifted and the blowing snow stopped allowing the Globemaster to safely land on the icy runway. While on the ground engines one and four were left on high idle and engines two and three at normal idle to avoid freezing and preventing the aircraft from being stranded. Then, immediately it was all hands on deck and the complete team, flight crew, ground support and medics, sprang into action with the precision of a Swiss watch. The snow cats were unloaded, the medics met and comforted the patient, carefully boarded him and pre-flight checks were carried out — with almost everything happening simultaneously. Just short of 25 minutes later the aircraft was back in the air while the clouds returned, and the whipping wind picked up again.

Page recalls that the patient was in surgery in Christchurch before the flight and medical crew finished their debriefing and were back to their billets. It was a good outcome for the patient and led to his full recovery thanks to the dedicated and exemplary team spirit.

Washington, had just completed its routine winter fly-in missions and was preparing to depart Christchurch to Washington when the crew was requested to stay for an additional 24 hours for an unplanned special mission. An urgent aeromedical evacuation of a patient in critical condition in the deepest of winter.

As with all missions, first requirements

MSgt. Lawrence Page, one of the three medical technicians on board, recalls that after a six-hour flight from Christchurch, the aircraft attempted to land under blizzardlike conditions. The weather forecasted that the aircraft would be unable to touch ground at nearly zero-visibility, and the whole team on board knew that it was in for a chilly challenge.

Aeromedical evacuation has global reach regardless of location, and medical needs can be met as fast as the aircraft can get there. We’ll never know if one of us will need unexpected medical support one day, even if it is at the end of the world. The 18th anniversary of this mission Aug. 28, 2025, is literally only the “tip of the iceberg” considering the thousands of aeromedical evacuation missions having taken place since then and will continue in the future.

Guard Members prevent potential knife attack at DC Metro station

Two members of the District of Columbia National Guard alerted local law enforcement to a potentially life-threatening situation involving a man brandishing a knife and threatening another man at the Waterfront Metro station in Washington, Aug. 18.

Army Spc. Tra’shwn Parham and Army Capt. Giho Yang were patrolling the metro station as part of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, Joint Task Force District of Columbia, when Parham said she saw and overheard the man brandishing the knife and making verbal threats. She said she immediately called the D.C.

Metropolitan Police Department, which responded to the incident.

“We showed our presence and then made sure that citizens around that area were safe. To do that, we had to partner up and communicate with the law enforcement officers that were nearby, making sure that we had eyes and ears on the situation to keep everyone safe,” Yang said.

Parham added that other people thanked them and said their presence made them feel safe.

Guard members are continuing patrols as part of task force operations to support local and federal law enforcement partners in safeguarding property and ensuring the continuity of government functions.

Modernized
RAB,
SHORT-TERM
Ramstein-Miesenbach,

Renting an apartment...with no kitchen!

I remember looking for a place to live when I first arrived in Germany and coming across a bizarre occurance on more than one occasion. What was odd wasn’t that everything was in metric (it was!) and it wasn’t that all the rooms were separated off with closing doors (they were, including living rooms). It was that some of the places I saw had no kitchen!

If you have ever put in some serious time in the housing market in Germany, you possibly have come across places with the kitchen missing. If you haven’t come across this yet, consider yourself lucky. That means you probably found a place to live rather quickly and were not subject to loving everything about the house/apartment...except for the fact it had no kitchen.

As Americans, we would never run into this strange occurrence in the states, probably because the reason we rent a house is because we don’t own any part of an apartment. We need a place to live with all the amenities, including a sink!

I have asked many of our German hosts why this is a thing. It seems many Deutschers actually like this! One friend brought up a good point when he explained it to me.

“When I moved into a flat, it was the perfect location and the price was right. Unfortunately, the landlord hadn’t updated it in about 30 years and the kitchen was the ugliest pea-green you have ever seen.” He went on to say “one of the best ways to have a nice modern place is to actually update it yourself!”

I asked what you do with the kitchen when you move and the next place is a different size? “No problem. There is actually like a black market for kitchens where you can almost find every size of used kitchen you want to buy or sell.”

So what else might “move with the owner” in Germany? It is often likely that the light fixtures move with an owner or renter, but that depends on what the situation is. In extreme cases, it is possible some people take floors with them!

In areas around the military installations, a bit more of the American culture has rubbed off on the local population, so it is likely that these types of cases are more rare than they used to be. If you do run into this type of situation though, you may want to see it as a positive. This could be your opportunity to have the kitchen you have always wanted. And then get paid for it when you sell it to someone that needs it when you move!

Navy Reservist achieves dream of becoming an NFL cheerleader

As the NFL prepares to launch another exciting season, one Navy Reserve sailor is preparing for her own big debut.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Alexis Gloster, a logistics specialist assigned to Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Jacksonville, Florida, will step onto the sidelines this year as one of the newest members of the Jacksonville Jaguars cheerleading squad.

For Gloster, the accomplishment represents the fulfillment of a lifelong dream — one she has worked toward while balancing the demands of military service.

“After serving five years on active duty, I wanted the flexibility to pursue other dreams while still serving my country,” said Gloster,

who has now served a total of nine years in the Navy. “The Navy Reserve has given me the best of both worlds — remaining part of something bigger than myself while continuing to grow personally and professionally.”

One of those dreams was professional cheerleading.

“I’ve loved performing and cheerleading for as long as I can remember,” she said. “Becoming an NFL cheerleader was a way to share that passion on a huge stage while also making a positive impact in the community.”

Earlier this year, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native auditioned for the Jaguars cheer squad. The process was rigorous, stretching across multiple rounds and lasting two weeks.

“We had to learn and perform choreography under pressure, complete an interview and stand out among more than 300 candidates,” she recalled. “It really pushed me to be the best version of myself every single day. When I was selected, it made the moment even more special. It was intense but so rewarding.”

Now, with the NFL preseason underway, Gloster is focused on balancing her Navy Reserve duties with the commitments of cheerleading on a national stage.

“It’s definitely a balancing act, but the discipline and time management I’ve learned in the Navy help me stay on top of both,” she said. “When you love what you’re doing in both worlds, it makes the hard work worth it.”

For Gloster, her role with the Jaguars is about more than performing in front of thousands of fans on Sundays.

“It’s bigger than the field — it’s about inspiring others, representing an incredible organization and connecting with people in meaningful ways,” she said. “I feel so proud to wear both uniforms, the Navy’s and the Jaguars’. They represent two very different

worlds, but both are built on teamwork, dedication and heart.”

Capt. Roger Dubé, Navy Reserve NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville commanding officer, said Gloster’s role as a professional cheerleader could help with the Navy’s recruiting efforts and set a good example for other Navy reservists to pursue their dreams.

“[She] is one of our unit’s hard-chargers and also serves as our command fitness leader,” Dubé said. “She is humble about her achievements as I was unaware of her selection as a professional cheerleader. We’re looking forward to seeing her lead the games’ crowds with her vibrant smile and energy.”

As she looks ahead to her first season as an NFL cheerleader while continuing to serve in the Navy, Gloster hopes her story will motivate others to keep reaching for their goals.

“I hope my story shows others that you don’t have to choose just one dream — you can chase them all,” she said.

is also a resilient city, having risen from the ashes of a 12th century fire and the bombs that destroyed it during World War II. An essential inland port city, Magdeburg offers plenty of treasures that are not to be missed!

Magdeburg Cathedral: The Gothic Resting Place of Otto the Great and his Wife

Magdeburg Cathedral was built over 1,000 years ago, and holds the distinction as Germany’s first gothic cathedral. Construction began in 937 when Otto the Great, German King and Holy Roman Emperor, built a monastery dedicated to St. Maurice and St. Catherine.

Over the decades, the monastery grew into a cathedral as Otto the Great’s power accumulated. Otto and his wife Editha were buried here, where their tombs remain to this day. Visitors can look around the majestic building, admire the many pieces of art and sculptures, and even attend services, as the cathedral still functions as an active Protestant church.

Choose Your Own Adventure: The Museum Edition

For science and technology fans, Magdeburg offers two excellent museums. The Jahrtausendturm is a six-story interactive wonder with more than 250 exhibits spanning the scientific and technological advancements of humankind over the past 6,000 years. It is located in one of the tallest wooden towers in the world, which reaches almost 200 feet tall. The Technikmuseum has amazing exhibits dedicated to industrial, agricultural, and aerospace history, among other technological evolutions, from 1847 to the 1980s. With more than 6,000 original and model objects, it is one of the largest collections in Germany.

Art and architecture lovers will delight in the Magdeburg Art Museum. Housed in a former church that was built in the late 11th century, the Romanesque-style Church of Our Lady was a monastery until the mid 1600s and a school for a period of time after that. Despite suffering significant damage during World War II, the building has been largely restored. The museum opened in 1975 and is full of contemporary and international artworks, sculptures, paintings, and photographs.

Magdeburg also offers the perfect opportunity to see two different types of history in one building that is split into two museums. At the Museum of Cultural History, discover the history of Magdeburg and Europe through art, military equipment, furniture and more. Additionally, one of the museum’s most famous statues, the Magdeburg Rider, can be found here. At the Museum of Natural History, visitors can learn about different habitats, biodiversity, and the Ice Age. The beloved, albeit poorly assembled, “Magdeburg Unicorn” can be found here and is certainly worth a look.

Modern Whimsy in an Ancient Town: Visit the Grüne Zitadelle

The Grüne Zitadelle, or Green Citadel, was built in 2005 and designed by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who believed in the close relationship between a building’s architecture and the health and happiness of its inhabitants.

This thinking is reflected in the Green Citadel through its bright colors, whimsical design, and incorporation of natural elements like trees and ivy. Apart from being an architectural marvel, visitors can go inside and explore the numerous shops, restaurants, and theaters. There is even a hotel with over 40 colorfully decorated rooms that provides an excellent option for an interesting place to stay in Magdeburg.

Get Outside: The Beautiful Stadtpark Rotehorn

Situated on an island in the Elbe River that runs through Magdeburg, Stadtpark Rotehorn is a beautiful English park and garden. It has been in use as a natural space since the 1800s when it was first used as a beach.

Since then it has undergone developments and includes a town hall, temple, and lake. Visitors can go boating on the lake, go for runs in the park’s trails, and even enjoy a drink in the island’s beer gardens. Stadtpark Rotehorn is perfect for simply taking a short walk through or for spending an entire day.

Getting to Magdeburg

By car, Magdeburg is approximately 5.5 hours from Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart, and 4.5 hours from Wiesbaden. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
