86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
The 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base had the unique privilege to give one of its own a second chance to fly.
During a training sortie in April 2020, C-130J Super Hercules, tail number 5736, experienced a hard landing event that damaged the structural integrity of the wings, engines and landing gear assemblies, rendering it unable to fly.
“The project really started when the program office took a look at the hard landing and the specifications and decided that it would be more cost effective to return the aircraft to the fleet rather than to retire it completely,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Lucas Buckley, 86th Maintenance Group commander. “Between the engineers, planners and technicians, taking the steps to put the aircraft back together was the best investment for the Air Force.”
Over the course of four years,

U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO, Ambassador Matthew Whitaker, visited Ramstein Air Base, to engage with senior U.S. and NATO military leaders and gain a first-hand understanding of how integration and interoperability of U.S. and NATO Ally air and space forces provides benefits for both the U.S. and NATO nations.
Scott Oudkirk, Deputy Chief of Mission to the U.S. Mission to NATO,
and Scott Delius, Secretary of Defense Representative in Europe and Defense Advisor to U.S. NATO, joined Whitaker for the visit which included not only meetings and briefings, but also a demonstration of counter-small unmanned aerial systems.
“Seeing our air and space teams in action at Ramstein really drives home just how important NATO is to European and American security,” said Ambassador Whitaker. “We’re not doing this alone. Our Allies are stepping up, sharing the load, and helping us stay ahead of
threats in the air, in cyberspace, and beyond. When we train and innovate together, we keep our troops safer, and we keep the peace. This is good for NATO and good for the United States.”
During the visit, Ambassador Whitaker and his team met with senior U.S. Air Force and Space Force leaders, including Lt. Gen. Jason Hinds and Chief Master Sgt. Randy Kwiatkowski, U.S. Air Forces Europe-Air Forces Africa deputy commander and command chief; and Brig. Gen. Jacob Middleton,

and Chief Master Sgt. Alex Birkle, U.S. Space Forces Europe – Space Forces Africa commanding general and command chief.
“The ability to project airpower, respond rapidly to crises globally and deter aggression starts with a robust, integrated foundation of air and space capabilities,” said Hinds. “We’re working aggressively with our Allies to leverage each others’ strengths and capabilities, while also finding new ways to operate seamlessly.”
The U.S. Air Force and Space Force leaders highlighted how rapidly evolving efforts are advancing air domain awareness, integrated air and missile defense, and counter sUAS capabilities through innovation and lessons learned. The group received mission briefings and visited the 603rd Air Operations Center where they witnessed how air and space domain awareness enables early warning and operational command and control.
“This visit was a valuable opportunity to showcase SPACEFOREURAF’s critical role in deepening relationships with regional Allies and partners to build a stronger and more lethal Alliance,” said Brig. Gen. Jacob Middleton, U.S. Space Forces in Europe – Space Forces Africa Commanding General. “Our Allies understand how space capabilities are essential to regional
deterrence and defense. They hear the call for burden sharing and are prioritizing building out their military space capability, which increases our readiness and improves regional security for all.”
USAFE-AFAFRICA Airmen highlighted how the command is working with Allies to meet evolving threats with a demonstration of both sensor and effector equipment designed to counter sUAS at a nearby control center shared by the U.S., Germany and France.
Throughout the engagement, discussions focused on how NATO Allies can leverage capabilities to bolster the Alliance’s operational posture, while also identifying areas where Allies can contribute by enhancing capacity in key mission sets.
In addition to discussions with U.S. forces, Whitaker and his team met with leaders at NATO Air Command to discuss shared contributions to security, NATO air policing, and the Combined Force Space Component Command.
“It was an honor to host Ambassador Whitaker and his team and show how U.S. air and space power in Europe contribute to deterrence and the collective defense of the Alliance,” said Hinds. “And should deterrence fail, what will be required to fight and win decisively.”

new wings were constructed along with first-of-its-kind C-130J wing transport containers. The new wings were transported to Ramstein AB where the 402nd Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron depot team from Robins Air Force Base, Ga., and the 86th Maintenance Group spent over 30 days replacing the wings, engines and other main components of the aircraft. There has never been a wing replacement of a J Model series C-130 on the field.
There were a lot of helping hands working to return the aircraft to flying standards, explained Buckley. It was a collaboration across the Air Force with planning, engineering, handling and shipping of the wings from the United States to Ramstein Air Base.
“This project has proven a great deal about the Air Force’s capabilities, most notably, its resilience, technical expertise, and commitment to operational excellence,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Justin Jordan, 86th Maintenance Group quality assurance superintendent. “Ultimately, this project reaffirmed the Air Force isn’t just about advanced technology. It’s about the
people who make that technology work. It’s about grit, discipline and the unwavering belief that no aircraft is beyond saving when the mission demands it.”
It was a complete team effort from the C-130 program office, engineers, depot, MAJCOM staff and of the maintainers of the 86th that have taken care of the aircraft for the past 5 years, Jordan said.
After months of planning, executing and repairs, the aircraft accomplished its first test flight in five years on July 15. After a couple more tweaks and checks later, Aircraft 5736 was finally able to make the trek back home to the USA in the morning of July 28.
“Watching her lift off the runway felt like watching a dream take flight. It wasn’t just a mechanical achievement, it was a deeply personal moment,” explained Jordan. “Aircraft 5736 became more than just a machine to us; she represented resilience, history and the spirit of aviation. That first flight was a tribute to everyone who believed in her and worked tirelessly to bring her back to life. I’ll never forget the sound of her engines roaring to life and the sight of her wheels leaving the ground. It was magic!”

Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA – The 7th Combat Weather Squadron has emerged victorious from Thunder Challenge 2025, an annual competition designed to test the tactical proficiencies and weather expertise of combat weather Airmen. The three-day event was hosted by the 1st Combat Weather Squadron, July 8-10.
“Thunder Challenge is a graduate-level event that pushes combat weather Airmen physically, technically, and mentally through our base competencies, tactical skills, and real-world observing, forecasting, and briefing scenarios,” said Lt. Col. Griffin Casey, 7th CWS commander.
This year’s challenge built upon the foundation of previous years, incorporating elements such as a modified Army Combat Fitness Test, augmented reality marksmanship and tactical shooting events, land navigation, simulated casualty care scenarios, weighted ruck marches, weather equipment implementation, and combat weather knowledge assessments. New for 2025 was the addition of a livefire stress shoot, further intensifying the pressure and demanding precision under duress.
“Each iteration of Thunder Challenge provides a unique yet challenging course of events,” said Tech. Sgt. Joseph Miller, 7th CWS team member. “The first year I went (2023) the competition was held at Ft. Bragg, and the
events were heavily focused on warrior skills, ECP, patrols, IED identification, react to contact, etc. This year the competition was more balanced and encompassed a broader scope of what Combat Weather units do on a day-day basis. The competition was equal parts technical and physical with a well-thought-out course of events.”
Five combat weather squadrons participated in Thunder Challenge 2025: the 7th CWS, 18th CWS, 1st CWS, 3rd CWS, and 607th CWS. Each squadron fielded a team of three to four individuals, showcasing the diverse talents and capabilities within the combat weather community. While the 23rd Special Operations Weather Squadron had to withdraw due to unforeseen events, the competition remains open to total force units, with hopes of increased participation from Air National Guard units in future iterations. The competition recognizes excellence across multiple categories, including the most physically fit staff weather officer, the “smartest” SWO (determined by individual performance in forecasting, observing, and weather trivia), and the top overall team award. This year, the 7th CWS claimed the overall team victory, a significant achievement after narrowly missing the top spot in 2023, losing by a mere half-point.
When asked about the significance of the win, Casey emphasized the profound impact Thunder Challenge has on the participating Airmen.
“Airmen that compete in Thunder Challenge return to their units with expanded skill sets and a greater understanding of how they enable the U.S. Air Force, U.S Army, and Partner Forces,” said Casey. “The competition fosters the exchange of tactics, techniques and procedures, encourages experimentation with new equipment, and strengthens camaraderie across a career field that is often geographically dispersed.”
The 7th CWS victory exemplifies the dedication, expertise, and readiness of its Airmen.
“Airmen of the 7th CWS must be prepared to deploy on short notice to austere and less than permissive environments,” said Casey. “These four exemplify what well-trained, motivated, and multi capable Airmen can do for the joint force in the future fight. They and the rest of the combat weather Airmen around the world are experts at bringing Airpower to the combined, joint force.”
While Lt. Col. Casey acknowledged the contributions of the entire team, he singled out the exceptional leadership of Capt. Griffin Petri, the team leader.
“He designed the train-up schedule, assessed himself and the team for strengths and weaknesses, and created a plan to win,” said Casey. “He prepared the team for the contest more like Best Ranger than a weather forecasting competition, which directly resulted in taking home the trophy.”
Conversely, Capt. Petri highlighted the team’s dedication to training and Tech. Sgt.
Miller’s knowledge of the competition was key to their success.
“The team brought together various experiences and expertise, coupled with a drive to win and tenacity to get after conducting hard realistic training,” said Petri. “This win shows that the effort the members put in day to day is working. They are experts in their craft and uphold the highest standards with the skillset required for their primary jobs as well as the skills required to work alongside our Army and joint partners.”
Thunder Challenge 2025 fostered innovation, collaboration, and the continued development of combat weather Airmen. For the 7th CWS, their victory serves as a testament to their commitment to excellence and their vital role in ensuring airpower dominance on the modern battlefield.
“The level of competition among the teams present really showed just how special the Combat Weather units are,” said Miller. “The hard work and dedication of the participants outlines the challenging tasks we face every day without thinking twice. To win this competition our team had to be technical experts in nearly every aspect of our field, along with having the physical fortitude to push through the pain and get the mission done no matter what.”
The winning 7th CWS team consisted of Capt. Griffin Petri, Tech. Sgt Joseph Miller, Staff Sgt. Fransico Estrada and Senior Airman Bobby Lewis.

As the temperatures rise, Soldiers face an increased risk of heat-related illnesses as they routinely undergo rigorous training across diverse weather conditions. The Fort Bragg Chief of Environmental Health, Department of Public Health, Lt. Col. Owen Price has seen firsthand the impact of heat stress on service members.
Soldiers are susceptible to three main types of heat-related illnesses: heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat cramps and heat exhaustion can be prevented with proper hydration, acclimatization, and avoiding overexertion during the hottest parts of the day. Heat stroke, however, is a medical emergency that requires rapid cooling and immediate medical attention.
To assess heat risk, Soldiers should use a combination of environmental factors and personal awareness.
“The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature is a valuable tool for monitoring heat categories. Unit field sanitation teams should monitor
the heat category with their WBGT during outdoor activities. Leaders should implement work/rest cycles and monitor personnel for signs of heat illness,” said Price. The current heat category is available by calling 910-907-HEAT.
Proper hydration is key to preventing heat-related illnesses. Soldiers should drink water frequently throughout the day, rather than waiting until they feel thirsty. Electrolyte-rich drinks can also help replenish lost salts. Monitoring urine color is a simple way to check for hydration levels –pale yellow urine indicates proper hydration.
When possible, uniform and equipment modifications can be authorized to reduce heat stress.
“Units should provide heat season training, particularly emergency procedures for responding to a heat casualty. Time is critical in these situations, and rapid cooling must be implemented.” said Price.
Strategies for mitigating heat stress include pre-mission planning, monitoring personnel during exercises, and providing balanced meals and snacks. Leaders should be engaged, know their Soldiers, and enforce standards to prevent
heat-related illnesses.
“Pre-mission planning should include mission timing to conduct strenuous activities during the cooler parts of the day, when possible. For foot marches, routes should maximize shade and include water points. Identifying ahead of time who will monitor the WBGT is key, and preparing contingency plans for heat casualties in
advance is critical,” said Price.
Emerging technologies, such as wearable sensors, can help Soldiers stay safe in the heat. These devices monitor physiological data, providing personalized heat stress warnings and informing work/rest cycles.
“This data can be used to provide personalized heat stress warnings and inform individualized work/rest cycles,” Price said. “There
are many heat reflective and moisture wicking fabrics already available, with new and better products coming out all the time.”
“Heat injuries are preventable with proper planning, training, and adherence to prevention strategies,” said Price. “By working together, we can reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses and keep our Soldiers safe and effective.”
A U.S. Airman assigned to the 496th Air Base Squadron conducts flight line operations near a B52 Stratofortress at Morón Air Base, Spain, May 22. From ramp operations to mission sustainment, 496th Air Base Squadron Airmen supported the deployment from touchdown to takeoff.
When U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortresses touched down at Morón Air Base for a recent Bomber Task Force Europe deployment, the 496th Air Base Squadron was already in motion, — quietly executing coordination that ensured the bombers could fly, refuel, rest, and return to the skies without delay. From refueling operations and airfield adjustments to security and lodging, every element of the deployment was supported by the team of Airmen and contractors that power the 496th ABS. As a tenant unit of the Spanish Air Force base and part of the 65th Air Base Group, the squadron plays a vital role in enabling U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa to project combat power across multiple combatant commands.
“This is what we’re here to do — we project airpower,” said Maj. Taylor Moore, director of operations of the, 496th ABS. “We don’t have
A U.S. Air Force B52 Stratofortress assigned to the 5th Bomb Wing deploys a drag chute to slow down after landing at Morón Air Base, Spain, during a Bomber Task Force Europe deployment, May 20. The 496th Air Base Squadron delivered fullspectrum support, enabling the aircraft to safely operate from the Spanish
our own iron on the ramp, so our mission is to receive and support transient aircraft. When those aircraft show up, the team gets after it.”
Supporting bomber aircraft like the B-52 isn’t business as usual for most bases. But for the Airfield Management team at Morón, it’s a chance to train and showcase their operational agility.
The B-52, with its 141-foot wheelbase and outrigger landing gear, far exceeds the width of most taxiways and ramps. To safely accommodate the aircraft, the team identified reinforced taxi routes, removed airfield signs and lights, and designed custom parking plans that factored in weapons loading zones and safe distances for extended engine operations.
“These aircraft require significant planning,” explained Master Sgt. Seth Boepple, deputy airfield manager. “But supporting them helps us maintain proficiency on tasks most Airmen don’t get to expe-
rience elsewhere.”
And despite the added complexity, daily operations never missed a beat. The close coordination between U.S. and Spanish personnel, many of whom are bilingual, kept the mission moving smoothly.
“Communication is key,” he added. “It’s a team effort every time.”
The bomber deployment also brought increased demand for fuel, transportation, and lodging. The 496th Logistics Readiness Flight tackled these needs head-on.
“Our Reception and Control Center starts planning months in advance,” explained Master Sgt. Nathaniel Shannon, logistics flight superintendent. “From petroleum, oils, and lubricants to ground movement, it’s a massive lift — but it runs efficiently because we’ve built strong systems and trusted partnerships.”
Working alongside their Spanish hosts, the Logistics team adapted to shared infrastructure and after-
hours access procedures while retaining full U.S. control over logistical planning and execution. The result: uninterrupted support for an operationally demanding mission.
With high-value assets and deployed personnel on the ground, security was paramount. The 496th Security Forces team surged manpower and elevated protocols to provide layered protection, —while also reinforcing bonds with their Spanish counterparts.
“Our defenders don’t just control access — they work side-by-side with host nation forces to monitor threats, coordinate patrols, and implement counter-drone measures,” said Tech. Sgt. James Dillahunt, operations noncommissioned officer. “This mission gives our younger Airmen a new perspective. They’re not just pulling gate duty — they’re securing global deterrence assets.”
Operating under U.S. tactical control, the defenders remained
flexible while respecting host nation law, blending U.S. standards with Spanish cooperation to ensure effective and diplomatic execution.
With approximately 150 activeduty Airmen and 300 contractors, the 496th ABS operates what Maj. Moore calls “a small city” — one that mirrors the capabilities of much larger installations.
“The biggest challenge is syncing across time zones with CONUS-based units,” said Moore. “But our longterm goal is clear: when combatant commanders look at Morón, they see a ready, reliable option — whether it’s bombers, fighters, or anything else.”
As the BTF wrapped up its mission across Europe and Africa, Morón Air Base once again proved its strategic relevance. For the Airmen of the 496th ABS, it was more than another mission — it was a chance to flex, perform, and reaffirm their role in enabling airpower at the crossroads of continents.

Inquiring minds want to know, and recently some inquiring minds at the 405th Army Field Support Brigade wanted to know how safe, potable, clear and tasty drinking water is provided to the residents of Kaiserslautern.
Lucky for them, the 405th AFSB labor advisor, Christine Schneider, organized a professional development site visit and a private tour of the SWK Haus des Wassers, or House of Water, in the Palatine Forest just south of the city.
Several teammates from the 405th AFSB headquarters visited the House of Water July 31, and were met there by Christoph Bauer, a project engineer with SWK. Bauer provided a detailed briefing of the facility and how it supports the greater community of Kaiserslautern to include Ramstein Air Base and several other U.S. installations in the Kaiserslautern Military Community to include Daenner Kaserne where the 405th AFSB is headquartered.
The value of water cannot be understated, but how it’s prepared, processed, filtered, tested and delivered often remains an unspoken mystery. For the team members from the 405th AFSB who were fortunate enough to tour the House of Water in Rote Hohl, or Red Hollow, their curiosities were fully quenched and all mysteries revealed.
Customers in and around
Kaiserslautern consume about 7.5 to 8 million cubic meters of water each year, according to Bauer. That’s about 2.1 billion gallons annually. The House of Water is one of three waterworks facilities supporting these customers. In addition, there are also 15 reservoirs, 24 deep wells and one spring. When it comes to water storage, the House of Water provides 6,000 cubic meters of storage within a total storage space of 17,000 cubic meters spilt between the House of Water and 12 other locations.
“It’s not only about the amount of water or the demand from our customers. It’s about quality. That’s the most important thing and our main concern,” said Bauer to the group of visitors from the 405th AFSB. “Here, we collect nearly 1,000 data points, which are transferred electronically to our control center – water-related information like temperatures and PH values are constantly monitored and analyzed. If there’s a fault detected, the control center will receive an alarm, and immediate action will be taken.”
Being the senior facilities engineer for the 405th AFSB, Kevin Hovis said he was intrigued by the opportunity to visit Kaiserslautern’s House of Water when he heard a professional development tour of the facility was being organized. But what Hovis didn’t anticipate was how directly relatable some of the lessons learned from the tour would be to Army sustainment and support operations.
“It became highly appar-
ent when we entered the filtration rooms and learned from our guide how important flushing the tanks and conducting preventative maintenance is to ensuring uninterrupted service and, in this case, clean water,” he said. “Replacing those huge filtration tanks would be a mammoth task. The roof of the facility would need to be removed, and cranes would be needed, or they’d have to cut the tanks out of there and build new ones.”
“It clearly demonstrated the critical importance of preventative maintenance and scheduled services. Just like those filtration tanks, our trucks and heavy equipment in Army Prepositioned Stock storage require this same level carefully planned, scheduled and executed maintenance. We can’t afford to not be ready to support our Soldiers the moment we’re called upon with fully mission capable, ready to issue APS equipment just like the city of Kaiserslautern can’t afford to not have safe, potable, clear and tasty drinking water 24/7,” said Hovis.
“It was really great for everyone. I’m glad we got to visit and see the Haus des Wassers. Now I know why Kaiserslautern has the best drinking water in Germany, maybe the world,” said Schneider. “I’m planning more 405th AFSB professional development site visits and tours for the months ahead.”

It’s the end of an era at the Privately Owned Vehicle inspection station and the Base Support Operations Maintenance facility in Baumholder as Thomas Moosmann steps down and retires with 44 years and 10 months of service as a German host nation employee with the U.S. Army.
“Today is very difficult,” said the BASOPS Maintenance Baumholder supervisor, 405th Army Field Support Brigade. “It’s been my whole life. I feel happy. I feel sad. I feel every emotion right now.”
Traveling to Baumholder from Grafenwoehr, to attend his farewell event was the director of BASOPS Maintenance, Stephanie Kramer, and Stefan Pfister, the BASOPS Maintenance operations chief. Kramer presented Moosmann with multiple certificates of appreciation signed by the commander of the 405th AFSB, Col. Ernest Lane II, as well as a certificate of retirement and a U.S. Army Civilian Service Achievement Medal for his lifelong support to Soldiers and Army families.
“We are here to help the Soldiers, to give them support. That was my life. Maybe I am half American now. When I eat some spareribs or a couple of cheeseburgers, I really feel like one,” said the 64-year-old local national employee who started working for the Army in 1980 and participated in several Return of Forces to Germany exercises, or REFORGERs, up until the Cold War ended.
Moosmann has worked at the BASOPS Maintenance facility and POV inspection station at Smith Barracks in Baumholder since 1999. Before that, he worked at Rose Barracks in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, before it closed. He said it’s his team that he’ll miss the most when he retires. Not only are they his coworkers, he said, they are his neighbors and his friends.
“Baumholder is a small community. If you’ve been here before, you know this,” Moosmann said. “We all live here, in and around Baumholder, and we see each other every week — not only at work but in our private lives, as well. At my farewell party, this will not be the last time I see them.”
Moosmann said he wants nothing but the very best for his BASOPS Maintenance team and POV inspectors, as he departs. He said that it was a pleasure working with them all these years, and he knows in the
future they will continue supporting the Baumholder community and the Soldiers and Army families there with the same level of support and attention they provided under his leadership.
“If you come here to Baumholder to get your POV inspected, my team will welcome you and serve you to the very best of their ability,” he said. “The safety of our customers and the safety of everyone on the German roadways is always our number one priority.”
As a field operating directorate under the 405th AFSB, BASOPS Maintenance provides equipment maintenance support to multiple Army garrisons and Army communities across Germany. BASOPS Maintenance provides consolidated material maintenance support for equipment and performs automotive maintenance on a fleet of garrison support vehicles.
This support includes maintenance on garrison and installation special purpose and armored vehicles, fire and rescue, snow and ice removal, and construction equipment such as scoop loaders, excavators, scrapers, road graders, tractors, rollers and more. BASOPS Maintenance is also responsible for conducting mechanical safety inspections on POVs.

U.S. Army Regional Correctional Activity-Europe
U.S. Army Regional Correctional Activity - Europe personnel partnered with the 709th Military Police Battalion and Croatian military police in May and June 2025 to share their expertise in operating a Theater Detention Facility, enhancing allied interoperability in support of Exercise Immediate Response 25. The exercise was part of U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s DEFENDER 25 exercise series.
Ten USARCA-E team members deployed from U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s Sembach Kaserne to the TDF at Josip Jovic Barracks, Udbina, Croatia, to provide realistic training scenarios for military intelligence investigators from the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade.
The weeklong training featured 26 role players acting as detainees to test critical detention tasks including forced cell extraction techniques, emergency procedures, investigation protocols and instruction on the Geneva Conventions. The USARCA-E team integrated with Croatian military police forces, fostering interoperability and strengthening the U.S.-Croatian alliance through NATO.
The TDF provided valuable training for MI investigators in a counterinsurgency environment and shed light on best practices for future detention operations in the European theater.
Sgt. 1st Class David Diaz, 18th Military Police Brigade platoon sergeant, said the training highlighted the importance of integrating correctional specialists in detention operations.

Walking around downtown Kaiserslautern, you’ve probably noted a number of fountains. Some rather simple, others more elegant, but all offering sprinkling water for a cool refreshment during sunny summer temperatures. Did you know that there are 41 fountains within the whole city?
Sixteen of them are in the city center and the remaining 25 in different city sections.
The most prominent and well-known is the Kaiserbrunnen located at Mainzer Tor at the end of Steinstrasse. It was designed by Gernot Rumpf and opened in 1987. The bronze figures depict significant characteristics of the city, such as Emperor
Barbarossa, the Opel works, emigrants on their way to the New World and a soccer ball signed by legendary Fritz Walter.
A further fountain designed in a more romantic style with swans is the centerpiece of entertainment at Martinsplatz. Built in 1893 it was first named Fontäne Brunnen, then changed to Serenade Fountain and has been called Martinbrunnen since 1976.
A smaller sandstone structure is to be found in front of Stiftskirche and the picturesque nostalgic Apotheke. The fountain was first mentioned as “Schöner Brunnen” (beautiful fountain) in 1571. Just around the corner at Schillerplatz you’ll find a more modern structure, with metal pipes and recently reburbished, it is one of kids’ favorite places to splash on hot summer days.
A drinking fountain, run by the city works in Kaiserslautern, is located at the end of Kerstrasse and marks the western end of Kaiserslautern’s city limits during the Middle Ages.
The Fackelwoog-Brunnen was relocated from about where the K-in-Lautern mall is today and transported to the park in front of the former castle and city hall. The Albrechtbrunnen close to Waldschlösschen (today’s Philipp-Mees-Platz) didn’t have a name until 1895. It was later named after King Albrecht who gave Kaiserslautern its city forest in 1303. In 1911 the fountain was equipped with the figure of a boy with a pig and received the nickname “Pig’s fountain.”
Another bubbling spring that is not so
well known is the Kennedy fountain, located at the square with the same name. It was installed in 1954, formerly known as the Altenwoog-Brunnen, whose copper basin was melted down during World War II. The last of the inner-city fountains that does not have a name is situated at Davenport Platz close to the university. The square was named after Kaiserslautern’s sister city Davenport, Iowa, and was installed in 1993. Other fountains are located in the city’s seven sections and ready for you to discover on your own and maybe inspire you to a fountain scavenger hunt. But in any case, it’s time to get out and enjoy some “Wasser marsch!” (water march) as Germans say when turning on a hose.

ancient history, and breathtaking natural beauty. While the cities of Dubrovnik and Split are well-known to tourists, the real magic of Croatia often lies in its lesserknown destinations. Wherever you’re coming from in Germany, Croatia is a road trip worth taking — and it rewards explorers who go just slightly off the beaten path. Ready your map, plan your route, and don’t forget to pack swimwear — the Adriatic is waiting.
The Blue Hole of Croatia
One of Croatia’s true hidden wonders is the Blue Hole (Plava Jama) near the village of Draga Bašćanska on the island of Krk. This natural sinkhole plunges dramatically into the karst limestone terrain, offering a surreal contrast of colors — deep cerulean blue waters surrounded by stark gray rock.
The Blue Hole is more popular with locals than tourists, and its remote location requires a short hike, but the payoff is a stunning, quiet place to swim or explore.
Note: This is not to be confused with the Blue Cave (Modra Špilja) near Biševo, which is also beautiful but more commercialized.
The Island of Hvar: Lavender Fields and Ancient Fortresses
Hvar, often dubbed the “sunniest island in Europe,” is a blend of glamor and authenticity. While the town of Hvar is famous for its nightlife and luxury yachts, much of the island remains untouched by mass tourism.
Getting there by Ferry:
To reach Hvar, drive to the coastal city of Split, where car and passenger ferries operated by Jadrolinija run several times a day. The ferry to Stari Grad, one of Hvar’s main ports, takes about 2 hours. During summer, it’s wise to book tickets in advance, especially if you’re bringing a vehicle. What to do on Hvar:
Visit the Fortress (Fortica) above Hvar Town for sweeping views of the Pakleni Islands. Explore Stari Grad, one of Europe’s oldest towns, dating back to the 4th century BC. Drive inland to see lavender fields, particularly beautiful in June and July. Swim in hidden coves near Zaraće and Dubovica Beach, away from the crowds.
The Adriatic Sea: A Jewel of Southern Europe
The Adriatic Sea defines the Croatian coastline. Its crystal-clear waters are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and sailing. Unlike the Atlantic, the Adriatic is warmer and calmer in summer, making it perfect for families and casual swimmers.
The sea also plays a key role in Croatia’s cuisine, with daily catches served in traditional konobas (taverns) across the coast. The calmness of the sea and the many islands it shelters have made Croatia one of the top sailing destinations in Europe.
Typical Croatian Food to Try Croatian cuisine varies by region, but along the coast and on the islands, seafood dominates:
• Peka – A slow-cooked dish of meat or seafood with vegetables, made under a bell-like dome covered in hot coals.
• Black Risotto (Crni Rižot) – Made
• Pašticada – A hearty Dalmatian beef stew, marinated in vinegar and wine, typically served with gnocchi.
• Fritule – Mini fried doughnuts flavored with rum and citrus zest, often enjoyed as a sweet street snack.
Off the Beaten Path: More Hidden Gems
If you want to take your Croatian adventure further off the map, consider:
• Zavratnica Bay (near Jablanac): A secluded fjord-like inlet with turquoise water and a sunken WWII shipwreck visible beneath the surface.
• Lastovo Island: Remote and rugged, Lastovo is part of a nature park and has some of the clearest waters in Croatia.
• Galesnjak (Lover’s Island): A heart-shaped private island near Zadar, perfect for a unique boat trip or drone photo op.
Currency and Cost
Croatia uses the Euro (€), having officially joined the Eurozone in 2023. This makes budgeting easy for travelers from other EU countries. While Croatia is generally more affordable than Western Europe, prices have risen slightly with the increase in tourism, particularly along the coast and on the islands.
Getting to Croatia: Drive Times from Germany
From Germany’s southern cities, Croatia is easily accessible by car, making it a prime location for summer travel. Here are estimated drive times to Split, a central coastal city and common gateway to the islands:
• Kaiserslautern to Split: Approx. 13.5 hours (1,260 km)
• Stuttgart to Split: Approx. 11.5 hours (1,050 km)
• Grafenwöhr to Split: Approx. 10.5 hours (960 km)
Expect to cross Austria and Slovenia depending on your route — both countries require a vignette (toll sticker) for highway use. It’s also a good idea to carry your passport, as you’ll be crossing several borders.
