Hope in Motion 2 Suicide Prevention Walk

COMMENTARY At USAG Stuttgart, German-American

Emely Böckle is a first-year Digital Media and Business student at Stuttgart Media University who recently spent time interning in the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart Public Affairs Office. With a passion for storytelling across platforms, she looks forward to building a career in the media and communication industry. Below, is a firsthand account of her experience with German-American friendship.

When I first stepped onto the Panzer Range Complex as a Jungjägerin, a newly licensed German hunter, I wasn’t there to qualify for a military range or earn a service medal. I was one of 25 people gathered to take part in one of the most meaningful traditions in the German hunting world: the Jägerschlag.

What made it even more special? I wasn’t alone. I stood beside both German and American hunters from the Kreisjägervereinigung Böblingen, the district hunting club in Böblingen, all of us proud to have completed the challenging requirements for a German hunting license.

Since 1924, the dedicated representatives of the Kreisjägervereinigung Böblingen have been volunteering their time to support the interests of around 1,100 members across the district. As a strong advocate for hunters, the association is committed to nature and wildlife conservation, the preservation of hunting traditions, and providing support for hunters in the Böblingen region. But they offer much more than that, including their own shooting range and a wide range of training and educational opportunities.

And in Böblingen, the ceremony marks more than just the end of the course but a clear example of cross-cultural friendship. It’s a place where I found lifelong friendships, shared values, and it’s that very bond that led me here, to the Public Affairs Office at U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart, where I’m currently completing an internship and writing my first article in a language other than my mother tongue of German.

A friendship rooted in respect

It could be said that the friendship between my father, Kreisjägermeister Timo Böckle, head of the county hunting association, and Deputy Garrison Commander Rob Gwinner has helped forge one of the strongest German-American hunting partnerships in the country.

“This partnership goes beyond sharing hunting grounds,” my father says. “It’s about mutual respect, cultural exchange, and a shared commitment to wildlife, nature, and hunting ethics. It’s truly one of a kind in Germany.”

Over the years, this relationship has grown into a deep collaboration built on joint hunts, shooting competitions, and social events.

“It’s a great honor for me to carry out this unique tradition — the German-American Jägerschlag,” he continues. “It’s a symbolic ceremony, a kind of knighting, where new hunters are welcomed into the broader community. The ritual carries meaning. It honors not just the individual’s successful completion of hunting training, but also their commitment to upholding values of conservation, responsibility, and tradition.”

A council that changed the game

On the American side, the Hunting, Fishing, and Sport Shooting Advisory Council has played an important role in expanding access to these opportunities. Entirely volunteer-led, HFSS works closely

with the Outdoor Recreation Program to support U.S. personnel stationed here who are interested in earning a German hunting license, thus becoming part of the local hunting culture.

“HFSS really began gaining traction around 2018,” says Gwinner. “At that time, access for Jungjäger was limited. But now, thanks to this council and our collaboration with the Kreisjägervereinigung Böblingen, we’ve completely changed that.”

Gwinner highlights the growing number of joint activities and the open doors for American hunters. “At the most recent ceremony, we welcomed 25 young German hunters and 15 Americans,” he shares. “This partnership is giving the military community access to some of the best hunting grounds in Baden-Württemberg and to meaningful connections. It’s no longer just a program, it’s a community.”

Learning from each other

Another core player in the partnership is Brian Buechner, Chief of Operations and volunteer hunting instructor. He prepares U.S. personnel for the demanding German hunting exam, a process that takes time discipline, and dedication.

“Normally we run two courses a year, one in spring and one in fall,” Buechner explains. “Each course lasts about three months, with classes three times a week for roughly two hours, split between the shooting range and the classroom.”

To make the course more accessible,

Ryan Day, Vice President of HFSS, is currently developing flexible options. “We’re working on an online version of the course for active-duty personnel. Not everyone can attend in person due to deployments or time constraints. This will help more Soldiers complete the training and stay involved.”

“Be it in person or online, it’s impressive that despite their military responsibilities, so many American service members find the time and passion to take a hunting course and truly engage with our German hunting culture,” my father adds.

Looking ahead

We often talk about building bridges between cultures. This one happens to be built through shared sunrises in the forest, quiet moments of respect for nature and laughter over hearty meals after the hunt.

“I’ve watched this community grow,” Gwinner said. “And I truly believe we’re in the best place we’ve been in many, many decades.”

As for me? I came for the forest. I stayed for the friendships. And I’m excited to see where this path leads me next. So, whether you’re new to hunting or just curious, I would like to invite you to explore this world. Who knows — it might open unexpected doors for you, too.

THE HOUSING HYPE

TOP 10 TIDBITS FOR HOUSING RESIDENTS

The KMC Housing Office is dedicated to assisting you with friendly reminders to help with your home responsibilities. Remember, the key is not waiting until there is an issue to do something—observation/preventive measures will go a long way when it comes to the elimination of minor issues that could turn into larger ones.

These tidbits should assist you with caring for your home, whether you are on or off-base.

On-Base

1. Remember not to hang anything from your home ceilings.

2. Please consider using the Self-Help Store at Ramstein and Vogelweh to ensure/ maintain the quality and safety of your home.

3. If you have any issues within your residence that is beyond self-help, please call Family Housing Maintenance at 06371-4639510. As residents, you are responsible for the cleanliness and everyday maintenance of your home to include changing light bulbs, replacing sink stoppers or shower hoses, cleaning stove burners and basic pest control.

4. Remember to trim your trees and bushes to a height of 6ft. Keep your lawns mowed and presentable. If you see something, say something. Help make our community better.

BONUS ON & OFF-BASE

5. Ventilate your home daily for a minimum of twice a day for 20-30 minutes. Ventilating your home by opening windows helps prevent household mold. Cross ventilation is necessary, so interior doors must be opened along with windows on opposing sides.

Off-Base

6. Are you experiencing home maintenance challenges? You should immediately talk with your Landlord or call the KMC Housing Referral Office. Contact DSN 4896643/Commercial 0631-536-6643.

7. We recommend that you perform (monthly) inspections of your home for routine maintenance issues. If any maintenance conditions do exist, immediately bring them to the attention of your Landlord for repair/resolution.

8. Respect the off-base housing rules. Remember, German laws take precedence over U.S. laws while living in Germany.

9. If you have ceiling fans in your home, you should change the rotation of your ceiling fans twice a year to increase energy efficiency, putting less strain on your heating and cooling systems. In the summer, set the fans to rotate counterclockwise. This method of blade rotation will push the air down which creates a cool breeze.

Like Father, Like Son: LaPierres deployed together with 75 EAS

Story & photo by Staff Sgt. Kevin Ray Salvador 406th Air Expeditionary Wing

CAMP LEMONNIER, DJIBOUTI

Chief Master Sgt. Douglas E. LaPierre, 75th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron senior enlisted leader, and his son, Tech. Sgt. Tyler LaPierre, a 75th EAS crew chief, are deployed together in the Horn of Africa, serving side by side in support of the squadron’s mission.

Douglas and Tyler both serve in the Montana Air National Guard’s 120th Airlift Wing, their home unit when not deployed. Their shared deployment marks a rare opportunity in the Air Force — one that blends family tradition with operational excellence in a real-world environment.

“I was genuinely ecstatic when I learned that I would get the opportunity to serve alongside my dad in a deployed environment,” said Tyler. “When it comes to fulfilling a leadership role, there are not many people that take care of enlisted personnel like he does, so I knew he was going to make this deployment

both productive and fun.”

According to Douglas, the LaPierre name carries a long tradition of Air Force service. His father, Master Sgt. Larry LaPierre, spent 30 years as an avionics technician working on F-106, F-16 and F-15 aircraft. Two of Douglas’ sisters are also commissioned officers in the Air Force medical field.

For Tyler, growing up under his father’s example shaped the Airman he would become. Both father and son enjoy working with their hands and “turning wrenches” on just about anything. At home, that means racing cars they build together and riding HarleyDavidson motorcycles. In uniform, it made becoming a C-130 crew chief a natural fit, allowing Tyler to play a hands-on role in keeping aircraft mission-ready for operations across the region.

The 75th EAS provides tactical airlift across East Africa, moving personnel, equipment and supplies to support U.S. and partner-nation forces. It is within this mission that the LaPierres find themselves serving together — one leading from

the front as a chief and the other ensuring aircraft are ready to fly.

“He leads with integrity, discipline, passion and fearlessness,” said Tyler. “Watching him wear the uniform with pride makes me want to serve and live up to the standard he sets every day.”

While deeply proud to share the same squadron patch, Tyler is mindful of charting his own course. That balance has brought challenges — from navigating the chief-Airman dynamic at work to occasionally receiving “verbal counseling at the dinner table.”

But it has also given him a frontrow seat to his father’s leadership under pressure, both in the squadron and during high-tempo mission requirements.

Day to day, the two rarely work on the same tasks, but both play vital roles in sustaining the squadron’s ability to generate airlift missions. Tyler maintains and prepares the C-130 Hercules for operations, while Douglas focuses on leading the squadron’s enlisted force and ensuring the team stays ready to meet mission demands.

Together, their roles highlight how every Airman contributes to keeping mobility aircraft flying in one of the most strategically important regions in the world.

This deployment is especially meaningful to Douglas, who says it could be one of his last before retirement.

“It’s obviously not something commonly seen in the military,” Douglas said. “I jumped at the opportunity to make this a lasting memory for the both of us.”

That memory includes a milestone flight when Douglas traveled to Kenya aboard the C-130 his son crewed. Nine years earlier, Tyler

had taken his oath of enlistment on one of his father’s aircraft. With this mission, their Air Force journey came full circle.

“Being able to do the day-to-day mission with my son is the icing on the cake,” Douglas said. “Knowing we will forever be able to look back at our time here and be proud of our service in the AOR together is comforting.”

Looking ahead, Tyler hopes to build on the foundation laid by his father and grandfather, continuing the LaPierre family’s legacy of service while contributing to the 120th AW and 75th EAS mission wherever it takes him next.

‘Grandfather’ of aeromedical evacuation legacy carries on at David Grant USAF Medical Center

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. David Norvell Walker Grant, the first surgeon general of the U.S. Army Air Corps and U.S. Army Air Forces, is known as the grandfather of the present-day Air Force Medical Service. David Grant USAF Medical Center (60th Medical Group) at Travis Air Force Base, California, is named in his honor.

The scale of Grant’s influence on modern military medicine cannot be overstated: His vision, innovations, and unshakeable determination changed the course of battlefield care and aeromedical capabilities we use today.

The sanitary train

According to an official U.S. Air Force biography, Grant received his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1915. During World War I, Grant served as a sanitary inspector and then later as a surgeon at Camp Gordon, Georgia. In 1919, he took command of the “sanitary train” on departure for Mayen, Germany. Constituted in 1917, the train was not locomotive — but rather a system of hospitals, surgeons, and ambulances. Field operations reports by U.S. Army General John J. Pershing in “American Expeditionary Activities in Germany, Italy, North Russia, and Siberia” note that Grant’s train had motorized and animal-drawn battalions — the rugged land, slow travel, and volume of casualties made for a painstaking endeavor to transport wounded from the front lines to hospitals.

Pioneering Airman

According to the article, “The Making of the Air Surgeon: The Early Life and Career of David N.W. Grant” by historian Robert E. Skinner, provided by U.S. Air Force Medical Service Senior Historian Dr. Joseph Frechette,

Grant was transferred to the epicenter of U.S. Army Air Corps training. In 1931, the Grant family arrived at the brand-new, barely-yet operational Randolph Field, now Randolph Air Force Base. Grant pulled double duty as a post surgeon and flight surgeon.

Skinner wrote that leading up to World War II, Grant spent the subsequent period developing the theoretical understanding of aviation in combat and convincing the war department that developing a system of air evacuation of casualties would be a worthwhile investment of time and resources.

Grant was the first medical officer to be ordered to Air Corps Tactical School at Maxwell Field, Alabama in 1936, where he wrote his thesis that became the groundwork of all aero evacuation.

“With mechanized armies, contact with the enemy will occur over large areas, necessitating a more mobile ambulance service than we have at present,” he wrote.

Grant is directly responsible for the development and use of aeromedical evacuation in World War II, and theorized use of helicopterlike aircraft in combat long before their wide use in Korea and Vietnam.

Dr. Thomas Julian of the U.S Air Force History and Museums Program detailed in “A History of Aeromedical Evacuation in the U.S. Air Force” how Grant studied unique problems such as airsickness, motion sickness and radiation exposure. This research was vital in aeromedical care, as there was limited common understanding of capabilities due to the newness of air warfare in the 1930s.

According to an excerpt from “Doctors at War,” provided by Frechette, Grant himself explored the shifting popular ideas about aero readiness, as he wrote: “The problem is to take a man whose body is adapted to function in a ground environment and whose mind is conditioned to seek peace and security and fit him

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. David Norvell Walker Grant (1891-1964), known as the “grandfather” of the present-day Air Force Medical Service, spearheaded aeromedical research and created the Air Evacuation Service that safely transported over a million casualties during wartime.

for a life of a flying, fighting animal.”

Under Grant’s direction, military aviation psychologists developed the most comprehensive mass testing procedure in history for the selection and classification of aircrew based on aptitude, personality, and interest, according to an official U.S. Air Force biography. Grant noted in “Doctors at War,” “Since we cannot build the flier to specifications or wait for evolution to turn him into a superman, our only alternative is to select and train the individuals best fitted for this duty, and then provide them with devices and methods for protection.”

Also carried out under his direction was aeromedical research in human requirements for high-altitude flight and the development of oxygen equipment, electrically heated clothing, and anti-G suits.

According to Dr. Thomas Julian, by the outset of World War II, Grant had spent nearly a decade collecting evidence and winning supporters for aeromedical evacuation. In 1939, after the German attack on Poland created a period of U.S. military armament and increases in spending, the first air ambulance unit was approved.

By 1953, aerospace medicine was designated as a board-certified specialty.

Travis AFB excels at Care in the Air Modern-day Travis AFB operates an aeromedical staging facility that can unload and upload patients to and from large aircraft. This

capability makes David Grant USAF Medical Center a crucial hub in global warfighter readiness, as well as for emergency management in the event of regional and national disasters. The center has been recognized with renowned accomplishments over the years.

In February 2023, the center’s Intensive Care Unit team received a DAISY Award — an internationally recognized award that celebrates nurses who have made profound differences in the lives of others. The center was later awarded USAF Surgeon General Hospital of the Year at the 2024 Air Force Medical Service Annual Awards, demonstrating expertise, leadership, and commitment of the mission supporting the U.S. Air Force and combatant commanders.

In August 2025, TAFB demonstrated the highest standard in aeromedical capabilities during Exercise Ultimate Caduceus 2025, a U.S. Transportation Command-led field training simulation in global patient movement. The drill simulated the reception, treatment, and onward transport of injured personnel from overseas to designated military hospitals and clinics — demonstrating how Grant’s work fuels excellence in aeromedical evacuation and health care today.

“Grant built an incomparable Army Air Forces Medical Service,” Skinner wrote. “(He) directed great strides in aeromedical research and created the Air Evacuation Service that safely transported over a million casualties from the various theatres of the war.”

725 AMS & 86 CS Airmen team up to improve cyber capabilities on NAVSTA Rota

The 725th Air Mobility Squadron recently partnered with the 86th Communications Squadron to bolster the Air Force network at Naval Station Rota, Spain.

The 725 AMS is the only Air Force squadron located on the Navy base along the southwestern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. As the largest Air Mobility Squadron in the European theater, the 725 AMS is tasked with providing fixed en-route support to U.S. Transportation Command aircraft through Air Mobility Command’s Global Air Mobility Support System, part of USTRANSCOM’s Joint Distribution Enterprise. Being an Air Force unit on a Navy base presents some unique challenges for the squadron, and it starts with powering on their computers.

“It didn’t occur to me until I arrived here that we need to provide access to AFNet,” said Lt. Col. Brad Seehawer, 725 AMS commander. “Our small team of cyber systems, client systems, and infrastructure technicians do a lot to

ensure that we have the digital connectivity and resiliency to support AMC’s European enroute.”

The 725 AMS connects to the Air Force network hosted at Ramstein Air Base, more than 1,300 miles away. Ensuring uninterrupted functionality requires a

strong relationship with the 86 CS provide communications support to all Ramstein AB. Much of that partnership is developed from afar, but recently Senior Airman Zyler Ziebol, an 86 CS cyber transport technician, and Senior Airmen Angelo Aguilar, an 86 CS network

technician, traveled to Rota to assist with some big projects.

The first is PacStar, a deployable router that enables access to both classified and unclassified networks. The 725 AMS is the first AMS to acquire this capability, ensuring that Airmen stay connected even during AFNet service interruptions. PacStar is a crucial system for an Air Mobility Team, the squadron’s rapidly deployable force that provides port, maintenance, command and control, and cyber capability.

Second, the 86 CS and 725 Airmen tackled an old switch in the 725 AMS Tactics vault. The squadron hosts deployed Total Force tacticians who provide threat briefings and updated products to aircrew conducting missions in theater. The need was amplified during recent influxes of AMC missions in support of U.S. Central Command operations.

“We’ve been waiting to get this switch updated for a long time,” said Lt. Col. Benjamin Segreti, New York Air National Guard. “It will be a huge help towards supporting crews going downrange.”

Finally, the cyber team implemented the Department of

Defense’s telephone replacement plan. As part of a cost-saving and modernization initiative the DOD is replacing copper line telephones with more convenient Voice Over Internet Protocol phones. These phones run on the same AFNet as the 725 computers, streamlining the infrastructure the team supports. The 86th and 725th team configured 58 VOIP phones, advancing Rota’s compliance with the DOD vision of a full IP-based communications system.

“As a Cyber NCO, I was greatly impressed with these Airmen’s technical expertise, professionalism, and dedication to getting the job done, especially at the junior enlisted level,” said TSgt Jordan Rosa, 725 AMS cyber systems and operations section chief.

The Airmen were presented with squadron coins by Lt. Col. Seehawer for this quick turn support, accomplishing all the upgrades in a single week.

“As a geographically separated unit to Team Ramstein, the 725 AMS relies heavily on partnerships to make the mission happen,” said Seehawer. “We couldn’t do it without the outstanding support we have from Team Ramstein.”

Iron Resolve: Lt. Col. Sanders swims, bikes, runs, leads

Story & photos by Tech. Sgt. Timothy Hayden 406th Air Expeditionary Wing

When Lt. Col. Matthew “SHAC” Sanders first signed up for an Ironman triathlon, he had never competed in one — nor had he ever attempted a triathlon of any kind. A few fellow Airmen from his B-52 squadron encouraged him to register. When he secured a spot, they told him, “Looks like you’ve got a year to figure it out.”

What began as a casual challenge turned into a personal passion that would span years and thousands of miles.

Sanders, currently deployed to the 406th Air Expeditionary Wing as chief of safety, now balances his role overseeing flight, occupational

and weapons safety with a demanding endurance training routine.

“I’ve completed numerous races across different distances, but I still get nervous before every one,” Sanders said. “That anxiety helps me focus. I remember a sign from my childhood kitchen that read, ‘I know it pays to worry, because what I worry about never happens.’”

Sanders’ journey has not been without setbacks. In 2015, while preparing for his second full Ironman, he was involved in a severe car accident that left him with a broken back.

“My recovery took a few months, and I stepped away from the sport,” he said. “I sold my bike and gear and focused on other things.”

Years later, his wife encouraged him to return to triathlons as a

Christoffels Bauernstube

way to channel his energy outside of work — prompting a renewed commitment to the sport.

In addition to his deployed duties, Sanders brings extensive operational and safety expertise to the Air Force. He previously served as an MQ-9 instructor pilot and began his career as a B-52 electronic warfare officer. He now supports Class A aviation mishap investigations — those involving destroyed aircraft or fatalities — through his assignment at the Air Force Safety Center. His background in both flying and investigation provides a comprehensive perspective on mission risk and readiness.

Recently, Sanders competed in the Ramstein Super Sprint Triathlon, a short-distance race held on base. He placed second in his age group and finished sixth overall — an achievement that reflects both his athletic dedication and continued commitment to personal challenge, even while deployed.

Sanders sees strong parallels between endurance racing and military service.

“Triathlon forces you to constantly assess your preparation and balance risk — just like we do in mission planning,” he said.

Lt. Col. Matthew “SHAC” Sanders, chief of safety for the 406th Air Expeditionary Wing, poses for a photo outside the wing headquarters building at Ramstein Air Base, July 2. Sanders balances his leadership role in safety operations with a personal commitment to endurance sports, recently placing second in his age group at the Ramstein Super Sprint Triathlon.

“You’ll never be 100 percent ready for every scenario, but you mitigate risks where you can.” Sanders said shorter-distance triathlons, such as sprint and Olympic races, can often be integrated into a normal routine, while half and full Ironman events demand much more time and structure.

Lt. Col. Matthew “SHAC” Sanders, chief of safety for the 406th Air Expeditionary Wing, competes in the swim portion of the Ramstein Super Sprint Triathlon at Ramstein Air Base, June 21. Sanders placed second in his age group and sixth overall in the short-distance triathlon, which he completed while deployed with the 406th AEW.

“Your weekends belong to long rides and long runs,” he said. “Everything revolves around those key training sessions.”

Of the sport’s three disciplines — swim, bike and run — Sanders is most at home on the run course.

“I’m a runner by trade,” he said. “I enjoy passing people who out-swam me. But I loathe the swim. It’s boring, and during my Ironman swim I couldn’t even see past my elbow for over an hour.”

Beyond the physical benefits, Sanders believes triathlon offers a range of advantages that extend into both personal development and professional leadership.

“It teaches you how to manage time, control stress, set achievable goals and stay consistent,” he said. “And because you’re training in three sports, it helps reduce the risk of burnout or injury. If I’m not up for running one day, I can bike or swim instead.”

These lessons, he said, directly support his ability to lead teams and manage high-stakes operations.

“The structure and mindset required for endurance training absolutely apply to leadership— especially in deployed environments where demands shift quickly,” he said.

When not deployed, Sanders enjoys life with his wife and two daughters, ages 6 and 4. Their household also includes two dogs — an older dachshund and a young mixed-breed puppy. Outside of work and training, he spends his time camping, skiing and hiking with his family.

For Sanders, the triathlon life-

style is about more than just racing — it’s a mindset he brings to every part of his life, including his role as a leader and officer.

“Whether it’s on the course or in the mission, it’s about showing up prepared, staying disciplined, and pushing through when it gets hard,” he said. “That’s how you go the distance.”

The story of the colorful bricks begins with the birth of Ole Kirk Christiansen in April 1891 in Omvraa Mark, Denmark. As one of 13 children in a poor farming family, he was fascinated by woodworks and became a carpenter, and more by accident than intention, he created the colorful blocks that come in all shapes, colors and sizes. Since 1958 more than 400 billion LEGO bricks have been produced. The tallest structure built with the interlocking plastic bricks measured 35.05 meters (114 ft 11 in) and was achieved by Lego Italia in Milan, Italy, in 2015. Fragmentum - In Search of the Lost Sound MusicalLiturgical Fragments from Medieval Monasteries Music of the Middle Ages

When the Reformation was introduced in the 16th century and many monasteries were dissolved, their choral manuscripts were also doomed. The codices, produced over centuries with the greatest artistic effort, were now considered witnesses to an outdated liturgy. The “papist books,” as they were now called, had only material value. The valuable parchment on which the chants were written could be recycled as sturdy binding material for files. Thus, thousands of choral manuscripts were cut up and henceforth served as a “dress of music” for book covers and to reinforce book spines. For centuries, they lay as fragments in dusty archives. Ensemble Ordo Virtutum awakens these sleeping treasures. The Fragmentum program takes the listener on this exciting journey through time and, after painstaking reconstruction, breathes their lost sound back into these witnesses, silenced for centuries. Tickets at: tourist-Information, Hauptstrasse 54, Otterberg.

ABC IN KMC: Federweisser

Zwiebelkuchen, Federweisser, Festivals

If you’re a lover or even connoisseur of great wines, or rather prefer fruity grape juice, you’re just in the right place to be! Germany is one of Europe’s largest winegrowing countries and the state of Rheinland-Pfalz produces two-thirds of the country’s fine wines.

The Moselle and Saar valleys along with Rheinhessen are well-known grape growing regions. Most of the vineyards are on or very close to the 50th latitude, which is rather unusual in international comparison. High quality and successful viticulture are only possible based on a special unique meso and microclimate condition.

The “Deutsche Weinstrasse” (German wine route) stretches 85 kilometers from Rheinhessen in the north to the French Alsace region in the southwest and ends at Deutsches Weintor (wine gate). Many famous towns such as Bad Dürkheim, Neustadt and Landau lie along the way and the region is renowned for vineyards as far as the eye can see on flat plains in close proximity to the Rhein River. The special mild climate zone provides 1,800 hours of sun a year.

Another famous viticulture region is along the Moselle and Saar rivers, but on steep slopes with up to 60 percent inclines. Approximately 60 million vines grow along the steep hills where the winding rivers reflect sunlight onto the slopes and warm the vines to ripen to a plentiful harvest.

The Celts were the first to cultivate white grapes along the banks and slopes of the Moselle River almost 3,000 years ago. Then Romans refined the winemaking process, improved the quality and eventually introduced darker red grapes. As wine consumption of the Romans grew along with the empire throughout the centuries, soldiers and civil servants were paid with wine, rather than coins, and even slaves received a daily ration.

About 9.25 million hectoliters (2.4 million gallons) of wine are produced annually in Germany and approximately 257.000 hectoliters (668.200 gallons) alone are exported to the United States.

September marks the beginning of the harvest season which can last until December. Large state-of-the art grape harvesters can pick the grapes on even surfaces, however the vineyards on the steep slopes of the Moselle and Rhein Rivers have to be picked by hand, a tedious task.

After the initial grape pressing process, also known as keltering, the premier wine produced is called Federweisser (feather white) because of its milky, white color. Although very sweet in taste, it also has a high alcohol content and is often sold in containers in little booths along the roadside.

A tradition that comes with the season is

delicious and spicy Zwiebelkuchen (onion cake) together with the semi-processed wine. The warm dish, more of a quiche than a typical cake, with onions and bacon bits, is a perfect complement to the fizzling new wine. Freshly pressed, pure and sweet grape juice is also a perfect alternative for those that prefer a non-alcoholic delight.

After the first winter frost in late November or early December, the very last grapes are handpicked and processed into a sweet, rare and expensive Eiswein (ice wine).

Wine fests

A cozy wine tasting in a small circle is a great way to get to know the best products from individual winemakers. However, if you really want to immerse yourself deeply

off at the end of August at the Middle Moselle Wine Festival in the charming wine town of Bernkastel-Kues, famous for its picturesque market square with ancient half-timbered houses,

• Mainzer Weinmarkt, Sep. 4 – 7: While you can marvel at the historic ambience of the town centers on the Moselle with their half-timbered buildings, Rheinhessen welcomes you at the same time at the wine market in the state’s capital right in the heart of the green lung of Mainz.

• Binger Winzerfest, Aug. 29 – Sep. 8: Another Rheinhessen awarded event in the Bingen Wine Festival at the apex of the Rhine and Nahe Rivers. For 11 days, the people of Bingen celebrate the artistry of their winemakers, making it the longest festival on the Rhine.

• Wurstmarkt Bad Dürkheim, Sep 12 –16, 19 – 22: Said to be the largest wine festival in the world, the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt (sausage market) lures you to the German Wine Route for 9 days and nights with an extensive program. Special trains will be running from Kaiserslautern, so hop on and enjoy the festivities!

• Herbstmarkt mit Weindorf in Landau, Sep. 7 – 16: Landau autumn market with its traditional wine village invites you to the south of the Palatinate in mid-September. A total of 71 white and 52 red grape varieties are cultivated here - just the right variety for your discerning taste!

in the culture and taste of an entire winegrowing region, there is no better place to start than the wine festivals in the villages and towns of Rheinland-Pfalz. Every year, every town, no matter how small, celebrates the grape juice in the streets, squares and alleys, but there are some communities that think a lot bigger: they dress in historical costumes, organize magnificent parades and hire local music groups, and in some cases they even have amusement rides and fireworks to bring you closer to the local wines and, on top of that, the local culture. Upcoming wine fests from late August to October:

• Bernkastel-Kues-Weinfest Mittelmosel, Sep. 4 – 8: The wine fest season kicks

• Deutsches Weinlesefest, Neustadt/ Weinstrasse, Sep. 26 – Oct. 13: As soon as the festive season in Bad Dürkheim is over, the next major event about the liquid gold begins in Neustadt. From late September to mid-October, the German Wine Harvest Festival offers you two very special highlights in addition to the large fair and the w.i.n.e.FESTival. Every year, the election of the German Wine Queen traditionally takes place. At the end of the celebrations, numerous traditional and marching groups as well as spectacular floats parade through the city - forming the largest wine parade in all of Germany!

• Rotweinfest Ingelheim, Sep. 27 – Oct. 5: The small town of Ingelheim is not far from the state capital, whose red wine festival in the historic ambience of the illuminated castle church is one of the most beautiful wine festivals in Rheinhessen. As the name suggests, it specializes in red wines, but you can also sip a white wine along the banks of the Rhein River enjoying the view.

during the Second World War, Marburg retains an old-style charm, with cobbled streets and well preserved 17th and 18th-century Hessian architecture. Even better: Marburg is one of the few places where you can stroll at your leisure without hordes of tourists taking photos and jostling you.

Marburg: An experience to remember

While wandering through the old town, visitors can easily get a feel for what Marburg might have been like in the distant past. Listen for the church bells and soak in the atmosphere. Even though this ancient town seems to come straight out of a tour guide, it is real and very much a part of the 21st century.

Because of its preponderance of cute, narrow streets, the best way to see Marburg is on foot (or on bicycle, if you feel confident enough to ride with the locals). If you find that you are lost, ask a local! They are particularly friendly. Please note that you need to be quite fit to walk around Marburg: there are many somewhat crooked steps to negotiate and, as the town is situated on a hill, some of the streets can be steep.

Must-see places in Marburg

The 600-year-old University Philipps Universität was founded around 1527, making it one of the oldest Protestant universities in the world. The university is also central to the town’s existence, serving as home to more than 25,000 students and employing more than 7,000 people (which is pretty amazing for a town of approximately 80,000 people). In fact, locals often quip that while most cities have universities, Marburg is unique because it is a university in itself.

St. Elisabeth’s Church

Built by the Teutonic Knights, a medieval German military order founded during the Crusades, this magnificent edifice was to honor the final resting place of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia, a Hungarian princess who died young (and was widowed while even younger), but not before she used her considerable fortune to care for the sick and impoverished. Today, the church provides a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, and is absolutely worth a visit — even in a country like Germany, which has so many worthwhile churches to visit.

Take a rivertrip or a guided tour in Marburg

If there’s a river that runs through a German town, there will be boat trips. Marburg, of course, sits on the Lahn River, so you can take a wonderful river tour in Marburg. The trips start at the bridge just across from the ancient university building.

If you aren’t keen on boat trips, you must see Marburg at night. Guided tours are available, although just wandering around the town is also a lovely experience. At night, Marburg looks even more romantic than it does during the day. Duck into one of the many restaurants in town and enjoy a leisurely meal. If you want to buy wine to take home with you, go to the Kulturzentrum Waggonhalle where you will find most things you require, with entertainment on offer, as well as interesting flea markets to stroll around.

Other ideas in Marburg

If you are into spas, it may be worth you stopping at the Aquamar aquatic center, which offers fantastic water fun for all ages. If perhaps you would like to explore other towns in the vicinity, a trip to Rauischholzhausen might be just the thing: located about 15 km east of Marburg, it offers a wonderful park and another ancient castle, Amoeneburg.

Marburg also has an amazing Christmas market, which runs every year from late November to just before Christmas.

How to get to Marburg

By car, it’s just just under two hours from Kaiserslautern, just over an hour from Wiesbaden, and around 2.5 hours from Stuttgart. Please check with Deutsche Bahn for plentiful train options.
