Patriot Day honors the memory of the nearly 3,000 victims who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks at the Pentagon, the World Trade Center and in a field in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001. The national observance also recognizes the courage of the first responders and service members who served in the wake of the attacks.
Many troops participate in memorial events, ceremonies and runs across the country and at bases worldwide to mark the significance.
For instance, the 270-mile Race for Remembrance – 9/11 Tribute Run from Sept. 8 - 11. The run starts in Arlington, Virginia, and finishes in New York City.
The September 11th National Memorial Trail is a 1,500-mile, multiuse route that
links the Sept. 11 memorial in New York City, the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
The trail traverses abandoned railroads, trails, rural roads, greenways and canal towpaths that can be walked, hiked and cycled. It is also accessible for people with disabilities.
The Navy honored the victims of the attacks by naming three amphibious transport dock ships the USS New York, USS Arlington and USS Somerset. The bow stem of the USS New York is made of 7.5 tons of steel recovered from ground zero.
After the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. military experienced a significant increase in recruitment as many who had not previously considered joining were eager to serve.
Today, many service members were not born or are too young to remember the attacks.
U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron back up a Humvee with an attached trailer into a C-130J Super Hercules Aircraft during the 37th AS Ops Olympics at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 28. The Ops Olympics tested the operational skills of the members through air drops, combat offloads, reverse taxiing, timeover-target control and Humvee trailer backing.

On August 29, the Minister President of Rheinland-Pfalz, Alexander Schweitzer (center right), visited the construction site of the new Rhine Ordnance Barracks Medical Center being built near Ramstein Air Base. Accompanying the Minister President was U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud (center left), director of Defense Health Network Europe and commander of Medical Readiness Command Europe. The new ROBMC medical facility will be the largest and most modern U.S. military hospital outside the continental U.S. and is set to replace the existing Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and Ramstein 86th Medical Group Clinic. The new hospital will ensure continued U.S. readiness for rapid trauma care for warfighters in future contingencies while also providing warfighters and their families with modern, world-class healthcare facilities they deserve for years to come.
By Matthew Olay Department of War
President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order on Sep. 5, changing the Defense Department’s name to the Department of War as a secondary title.
The order — the 200th signed by the president since taking office — authorizes Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and DOD subordinate officials to use secondary titles like “Department of War,” “Secretary of War” and “Deputy Secretary of War” in public communications, official correspondence, ceremonial contexts and non-statutory documents within the executive branch, according to a fact sheet released by the White House.
Additionally, the order directs all executive agencies and departments to “recognize and accommodate these secondary titles in internal and external communications,” as well as instructing Hegseth to recommend actions — including executive and legislative actions — that would be required to permanently rename the department.
“The name ‘Department of War’ conveys a stronger message of readiness and resolve compared to ‘Department of Defense,’ which emphasizes only defensive capabilities,” the fact sheet reads.
“Restoring the name ‘Department of War’ will sharpen the focus of this department on our national interests and signal to adversaries America’s readiness to wage war to secure its interests,” it continues.
Prior to signing the executive order, Trump said, “This is something [we’ve] thought long and hard about; we’ve been talking about it for months.”
He added that, under the original War Department, the U.S. achieved military victories in both world wars; however, victories turned into more prolonged conflicts that
often resulted in a “sort of tie” once the War Department rebranded as the Defense Department.
Hegseth concurred with Trump’s contention.
“We changed the name after World War II from the Department of War to the Department of Defense and … we haven’t won a major war since,” Hegseth said.
“And that’s not to disparage our warfighters … That’s to recognize that this name change is not just about renaming, it’s about restoring; words matter,” he continued.
The secretary went on to say that the War Department would fight decisively to win and not get mired down in endless conflicts.
“Maximum lethality, not tepid legality; violent effect, not politically correct,” he said.
The War Department was originally established by Congress on Aug. 7, 1789, the same year the Constitution took effect. It replaced the Board of War and Ordnance, which was created in 1776 during the
Revolutionary War.
The War Department had oversight over the Army and Navy until 1798, when the Navy Department was formed.
The first secretary of war, a civilian position, was retired Army Gen. Henry Knox, who was appointed by President George Washington. Fort Knox, Kentucky, is named after him.
On Nov. 8, 1800, the War Department building in Washington burned down and with it, all of the department’s records.
During the Civil War, the department was responsible for recruiting, training, supply, medical care, transportation and the pay of two million soldiers.
The War Department’s name remained the same for over 150 years, until it merged
with the Department of the Navy and the newly established Department of the Air Force to become the National Military Establishment with the passage of the 1947 National Security Act.
Famous War Department secretaries include James Monroe, who became president; John Calhoun, who became vice president; Jefferson Davis, who became president of the Confederate States; Ulysses S. Grant, a former Union general who became president; Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln; and William Howard Taft, who became president and then chief justice of the Supreme Court.

“He’s gone. Shawn...he’s gone.” Silence.
“Did you hear me?” Pause.
My voice cracked when I responded, understanding I would never be able to call or talk to my younger brother again. “Yeah.”
Shawn had ended his own life.
Suicide can happen quietly and sometimes it’s the people closest to us who are struggling. A lesson painfully learned throughout my life and career: we are not meant to carry our struggles alone. Losing my brother reminded me that silence can be deadly, and seeking help is not just normal — it’s necessary.
I was halfway across the globe stationed at Incirlik Air Base in Türkiye when the call came that shattered my world. Now, it has been three years since I lost my brother, and there are more questions than answers.
For a long time I blamed myself. What if I had texted him more? What if I called him just for fun instead of only around a holiday or family event? When I first arrived at Incirlik, time passed quickly and I hadn’t reached back home.
It wasn’t long before the summer heat faded to something a bit more bearable, and yet I thought about how my coworkers were doing away from loved ones and

didn’t check in with my own siblings. Suddenly it was Shawn’s 28th birthday and I messaged him to wish him a happy birthday, but was it too little too late?
He saw my message, but didn’t respond. I’ll never know if a few more phone calls would have made him feel loved enough to stay.
I moved to Germany just two months after Shawn died and I spent endless hours at work because going home meant confronting what else I could or should have done differently. The echo in my newlyrented, still-empty house screamed at me.
Everyone said “it’s not your fault” and “there’s nothing you could have done,” but I questioned if that was true.
After my family lost our mom nearly eight years previously, I focused on my teammates to ensure they felt cared about and as the years passed, thought less about the family back where I grew up. If I was fine, then they were fine, too. Right?
Guilt clouded my thoughts day and night. I knew all the resources available and yet I couldn’t bring myself to do anything about it. Maybe I was subconsciously punishing myself — working myself to the bone so I didn’t have to feel the heartache of losing someone close to me.
My 30-minute drives on the autobahn home allowed too much time for my thoughts to wander. What if what happened to my brother happened to me? I was scared, but eventually a new coworker helped me realize that I needed to seek
mental health treatment, rather than just tell other people about how helpful it was.
The misconception about being on antidepressants lingered at the back of my mind, but I knew I couldn’t tackle this hurdle on my own. After I started medication, I began to feel like myself again. I even had the opportunity to deploy and thrived under the pressure. All of us were away from loved ones and it reminded me to check in with family more often, and we slowly tried to heal, together.
In our personal and professional lives, time is precious. We can’t afford to be passive when it comes to our relationships. It’s so easy to get stuck with day-to-day responsibilities that we forget to slow down and connect.
We can have the best intentions and think we’ll do the right thing, but did we do something? When you say “yeah, my door is always open,” is it? As leaders or parents, when you say “yeah, let me know whatever you need,” are you listening when someone tells you exactly what they need?
It is not enough to say “I’m here.” You have to back it up with action.
Checking in regularly, spending time with colleagues, friends, or family, helps you notice when someone might be struggling. Even small gestures matter: a thoughtful message, a shared meal, or simply asking, “How are you, really?” These moments build trust and give people the space to speak up. No amount of annual training is going to replace getting
to know the people around you. It’s a sign of courage to admit you need help and to ask for it, but it looks different for each individual. Sometimes it’s as small as talking to a peer or supervisor about a stressor, or talking to a first sergeant or chaplain. Military and Family Readiness Centers have a plethora of resources, or sometimes more specific medical care is needed.
Beyond resources, what matters most is to be human. I am forever grateful to my first supervisor who watched me cry in his office when my mom died and showed me what it meant to work for someone who cared, and that asking for help wasn’t frowned upon.
To the first sergeant who spent the whole short tour getting to know our American Forces Network crew as his own even though we didn’t technically belong to him and who immediately called me on a Friday night when I messaged him to say I got bad news from back home - you’re the kind of leader I want to be.
If all the challenges in my life have taught me anything, it’s to be loud. To speak up when I need help or someone else might need help. It’s to have a backbone to do the right thing when it’s not the easy thing.
Nothing is quite as loud as the silence of the phone call telling you someone took their own life. I refuse to let that silence happen again. Speak up. Check in. Be present. Your voice can make the difference.

Story & photos by Cameron Porter 405th Army Field Support BrigadeEurope & Africa
The 1st Cavalry Division is providing the Soldiers to support the next rotation of forces to Poland, and the 405th Army Field Support Brigade and Theater Logistics Support Center-Europe are providing them with the Bradley Fighting Vehicles they’ll need for the mission.
Soldiers from 3rd Brigade Combat Team’s 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, are deploying from Fort Hood, Texas, to Poland to support the mission, there. Meanwhile, over 100 M2A3 Bradley Fighting Vehicles were prepped and issued to them in Germany before being transported to Poland for the mission.
Almost three dozen Bradley Fighting Vehicles were issued to the Cavalry Soldiers from the 405th AFSB’s Army Field Support Battalion-Germany at the Coleman Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 worksite in Mannheim, Germany, recently.
The rest were issued to the Cavalry Soldiers from TLSC-E, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, mainly at Maintenance Activity Kaiserslautern but also at Maintenance Activity Vilseck in U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria.
Army Maj. Alec Velasco, the executive officer at AFSBn-Germany, 405th AFSB, said his battalion worked for months to prepare the Bradleys, ensuring they were all 100 percent fully mission capable
and ready for issue. He said it’s been a huge focus for his battalion, the brigade and the entire theater over the past year.
“We’ve been briefing U.S. Army Sustainment Command and U.S. Army Europe and Africa weekly on the status of these Bradleys since last August,” said Velasco. “Between the Army civilians who work there, the green suitors there, and the team of contractors who do 90 percent of the heavy lifting to get these vehicles ready, it’s been a huge collaborative effort.”
“Initially, it seemed like an insurmountable task,” Velasco said. “Progress was slow at first as we did the required technical inspections and ordered all the necessary parts. As parts started coming in, we’d start wrenching them down.

Army Field Support Battalion-Germany had the mission to issue nearly three dozen Bradleys at Coleman to Fort Hood, Texas, Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, for their upcoming rotational mission to Poland.
As one system came up, we’d run the required tests on all the systems and often find more problems. But we kept at it, and progress really accelerated this past spring and summer to get to where we are today.”
“Coming over here and falling in on this equipment … is hugely beneficial for us. All we have to do is maintain the APS equipment and then give it back to the [405th AFSB] when we’re done. We don’t have to worry about taking it back home and fixing it as soon as we get back,” said 1st Lt. Robert Zelinski, platoon leader, B Company, 2nd Bn., 7th Cav. Regt.
“We had no idea what we were walking into here, but from the first moment we got here, the team at Coleman was taking care of every-
thing. This is the standard when it comes to maintenance professionalism. We really appreciate everybody from every level,” said 1st Lt. Reece Crook, executive officer, B Company, 2nd Bn., 7th Cav. Regt.
“I’ve never seen Bradleys like this,” said Staff Sgt. Josue Betancourt, an M2 Bradley system maintainer from the field maintenance team supporting 2nd Bn., 7th Cav. Regt. “It’s the first time I’ve seen Bradleys in this condition my entire 10-year career, to be honest with you.”
“For the Bradleys at Coleman, the combined team there – with all the expertise and experience they have – made it all happen,” said Velasco, adding that the Bradleys came to the Coleman APS-2 worksite and AFSBn-Germany after

The Bradley Fighting Vehicle is designed to transport infantry to key areas on the battlefield while providing fire support. It is equipped with a 25mm M242 Bushmaster chain gun, a TOW missile launcher, and a 7.62mm M240C machine gun. The Bradley also includes optics and electronics for target acquisition and communication. It can carry six infantrymen in addition to its three-man crew, supporting various combat operations with its protection and mobility features.
The Coleman APS-2 worksite is one of six APS-2 worksites in Europe, and AFSBn-Germany is one of four APS-2 battalions under the command and control of the 405th AFSB. The 405th AFSB’s APS-2 program provides turn-key power projection packages ready to deploy at a moment’s notice while helping to
reduce the amount of equipment needed from the deploying forces’ home stations.
The 405th AFSB is the premier logistics integrator and synchronizer for U.S. European Command, enabling readiness solutions to ‘Support the Warrior’ by operationalizing U.S. Army Materiel Command capabilities and delivering readiness within the U.S. Army Europe and Africa areas of responsibility at the point of need.
The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging AMC’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces. Fragmentum - In Search of the Lost Sound Musical-Liturgical Fragments from Medieval Monasteries Music of the Middle Ages; When the Reformation was introduced in the 16th century and many monasteries were dissolved, their choral manuscripts were also doomed. The codices, produced over centuries with the greatest artistic effort, were now considered witnesses to an outdated liturgy. The “papist books,” as they were now called, had only material value. The valuable parchment on which the chants were written could be recycled as sturdy binding material for files. Thus, thousands of choral manuscripts were cut up and henceforth served as a “dress of music” for book covers and to reinforce book spines. For centuries, they lay as fragments in dusty archives. Ensemble Ordo Virtutum awakens these sleeping treasures. The Fragmentum program takes the
listener on this exciting journey through time and, after painstaking reconstruction, breathes their lost sound back into these witnesses, silenced for centuries. Tickets at: tourist-Information, Hauptstrasse 54, Otterberg.

Bad Dürkheim is a quaint little city with about 19,000 inhabitants just around the corner from the Kaiserslautern Military Community. It is well worth a day trip through the pristine Palatinate Forest with paper mills along the road, or extend your journey along the Deutsche Weinstrasse and combine it with cozy Neustadt.
The city traces its roots back to Roman times, when the settlement was known as Salodurum. The Romans established a villa and wine growing estates around the first century A.D., leveraging the region’s mild climate and fertile soils.
The town’s first documented mention dates to 778 A.D. in the Lorsch Codex, where “Durrenchiricha” (interpreted as “church by the currant field”) appears. Over the Middle Ages, it grew under the Counts of Leiningen, benefiting from its position on the northern edge of the Haardt Mountains and along key trade routes.
Bad Dürkheim’s inner town grew around a medieval market square first and became a thriving trading hub in the High Middle Ages, with merchants and craftsmen settling along the Isenach stream. Town rights were granted in 1360 and, despite setbacks during the Thirty Years’ War, the core retained its compact street grid and market functions.
The construction of Dürkheim’s hilltop castle (Ruine Hardenburg) brought additional regional power to the area. During the 16th century the town suffered devastation during the Peasants’ War (1525) and the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), leading to population decline and rebuilding efforts.
Railway and spa
Industrialization brought a railway in 1847, connecting Bad Dürkheim to the wider Palatinate and boosting commerce and tourism. The discovery of local brine springs led to the establishment of spa facilities in 1904.
A brine spring, or salt spring, is a naturally occurring spring whose water is heavily saturated with dissolved salt rather than fresh water. These springs aren’t necessarily located directly above rock-salt (halite) deposits; saline groundwater often seeps through clay and gravel layers from higher ground and emerges in valley bottoms as brine springs.
In 1911, the town gained the prefix “Bad,” which means spa in recognition of its therapeutic offerings and has specialized in curing respiratory diseases. Other towns, such as Bad Kreuznach, Bad Münster or Bad Bergzabern in the area, are also highly esteemed as spa towns.
In 1934 Bad Dürkheim gained a further attraction and boasts the largest wine barrel on the globe. The Riesenfass was built by local vineyard owner and master cooper Fritz Keller, using traditional stave-construction techniques, nearly 200 Black Forest spruce trees yielding 178 staves (each 15 m long and 15 cm thick), and yielding a 1.7-million-liter volume.
Despite its monumental size, the Riesenfass has never held wine. Instead, it houses a restaurant and wine tavern: the two-level interior seats about 430 guests, and in 1958 a wooden “Bütt” extension added room for another 120. Today it operates year-round as a unique dining venue and comes alive during the Wurstmarkt and other large-group events.
The city has a quaint historical section with Stadtkirche St. Ludwig in late Gothic architecture, a Baroque Rathaus (city hall) with an ornate façade and gabled roof overlooking the Marktplatz. Steinhäuser Hof is a former merchant’s courtyard, now
a cultural venue used for varying events. There are small cafés, a few semi-timbered houses and the stylish Kurhaus with a spa garden. The Spa museum has chronicles of spa heritage and salt production and you can stroll along the graduation towers and breathe in saline-enriched air to relieve respiratory conditions.
If you’re into it, you can also stop by the casino, try your luck with the slot machines, roulette tables, or play a round of Blackjack or Poker. But beware, jacket and tie are mandatory for gentlemen.
Dubbeglas
Bad Dürkheim is best known for the world’s largest wine festival that will take place from Sep. 12 – 16, and Sep. 19 – 22 this year, although it has a rather awkward name “Wurstmarkt” (sausage market).
cialties, but also fireworks, live music, fairground rides, and vendors with items from tea towels to the latest fashion. Regional specialties include bratwurst, Flammkuchen, pretzels and Zwetschgenkuchen (plum cake) at dedicated food stands and a farmers’ market offers regional produce. The wine princess is coronated and historic wine carriages are displayed, drawing up to 600,000 visitors annually.
Wine in large tents is usually served in a Dubbeglas, a traditional half-liter glass used predominantly in the Pfalz region for wine or wine spritzers. Its most distinctive feature is the series of rounded indentations, called “Dubbe” (meaning dots in the local dialect), which adorn the exterior and provide a secure grip.
The festival began around 1417 as a small Michaelmas fair where pilgrims and locals traded produce near the chapel on Michelsberg. As butchers set up stalls, sausages became so integral that by the 1700s it earned the name “Wurstmarkt.” While its focus shifted to wine over time, the sausage legacy remains part of its charm.
Nowadays the festival offers not only 300+ prize-winning wines and regional spe-
According to regional tradition, the Dubbeglas was invented by butchers in Bad Dürkheim. At slaughter festivals, the greasy or wet hands of the butchers caused the smooth, straight-sided glasses of the time to slip, so they adopted glasses with molded dimples to prevent accidents. Over time, these “butchers’ glasses” became the hallmark of Pfälzer wine culture, also suitable as typical Palatine souvenirs.
Please keep in mind that wine has a higher alcohol content than typical German beer and can get you tipsy easier than expected. Make sure to have a plan if you wish to visit the festival. Either have a designated driver, or even better yet, take a train from Kaiserslautern and have someone to pick you up at the back end.
Enjoy all that Bad Dürkheim has to offer, but make sure to stay safe!

U.S. Central Command and the Egyptian armed forces, through the Egyptian training authority, officially began Bright Star 25, a multinational military exercise, with a ceremonial opening at Mohamed Naguib Military Base, Egypt, Aug. 28.
The exercise brings together forces from across the globe, underscoring the United States’ enduring commitment to working alongside Egypt and partner nations to strengthen collective security and promote regional stability.
The day prior to the opening ceremony, Lt. Gen. Ahmed Khalifa, chief of staff of the Egyptian armed forces, inspected final preparations. His visit highlighted the extensive planning and coordination between U.S. and Egyptian forces in hosting what is widely regarded as one of the largest joint military exercises in the world.
“I am pleased to be at the training center and to meet participants from the Egyptian and American sides, as well as from the friendly nations taking part,” Khalifa said. “I would like to emphasize the importance of joint exercises, especially Bright
participating countries and the exchange of expertise and knowledge they provide to all parties involved. Such joint training enhances our future operations. I have previously participated in Bright Star exercises, and they have had a significant and lasting impact — benefits I continue to draw on to this day.”
During his tour, Khalifa received a detailed briefing on the full range of procedures from both U.S. and Egyptian teams. He also observed several training activities and engaged with U.S. service members.

Many utility companies honor the Utility Tax Avoidance Program. This is a great way to save money on your energy bill.
In Germany, electricity and natural gas are taxed at 19%; water is considered a food and therefore only taxed at 7%. Unless you enroll in the UTAP, your energy suppliers must automatically add these taxes to your utility bill.
Registration for Utility Tax Avoidance Program is a tax savings that is open to all military and authorized members of the U.S. Forces who live off-base. There is a one-time service fee charged by your VAT office upon registration.
For more Information please contact the Value Added Tax (VAT) office near you: Ramstein Air Base 86th Force Support Squadron, Bldg. 2118 480-5309, 06371-47-5309

Payments made easy: When you come to open or close your account, please bring along the meter number and meter reading for each type of service. Set payments are due every month. Payments are usually based on number of occupants. Payments go into a holding account for your annual meter reading. Participation in UTAP requires participation in direct debit from your bank account (SEPA debit authorization).
Saving energy also means saving money. Here’s some information that helps you to save energy:
• Install and set a programmable thermostat: Save an estimated 10 percent per year on heating costs by using a programmable thermostat.
• Use sunlight to your advantage: Choose window treatments that allow you to use natural light while reducing heat loss and gain.
• Switch to Energy Star or European Union energy label electronics: Using certified products throughout your home could save energy and money.
• Choose energy saving lighting: Replacing your most frequently used lights with energy efficient lights or LEDs.
• Reduce energy for water heating: You can lower your water heater’s temperature to a minimum of 60°C and still be safe.
• Caulk air leaks: Using low-cost caulk to seal cracks and openings in your home keeps warm air out and cash in your wallet.
• Contact a professional home performance specialist from your utility company. These professionals will do a comprehensive audit of your whole house using special tools to measure your home energy efficiency.

In a conflict scenario, artificial intelligence can assist the warfighter in discerning what is happening in the environment and better understand the tactics the adversary might use, thereby improving decision-making, said Emil Michael, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering.
Michael provided the keynote address at the National Defense Industrial Association in Washington today. He also held a media roundtable immediately after the address.
AI takes language or equations, synthesizes the information and can provide answers that are beyond the computational power of the human brain in a short time frame, he explained.
Uses for AI are endless and include creating new materials, assisting Defense Department employees and contractors, modeling and simulation, and the Golden Dome, Michael said.
Private industry is investing hundreds of billions of dollars each year into AI for things like software development, chips, data centers and so on, he said.
Besides AI, another dual-use technology with both military and civilian applications is space-launched technology, such as satellites, he said, noting that private industry has footed most of the bill.
Other nascent critical areas for DOD are hypersonics, directed energy, unmanned aer-
ial vehicles and critical minerals, he said, highlighting that the importance of UAVs on the battlefield was demonstrated in the recent Israel-Iran conflict, as well as in Ukraine.
UAVs can go from start to prototype in 18 months, something that can’t be done with manned aircraft, Michael said, adding that the systems can be user tested by warfighters, and the best ones can be quickly fielded.
As for enemy drones such as those used by the Houthis, it doesn’t make sense to shoot them down with missiles that cost millions, he said. This is where directed energy can be used to good effect.
Michael said to get all these innovations moving, industry needs to share risk with the department.
“It’s a balance,” he said. “When there’s more shared risk, both sides can take more risks, and that will lead to speed, that will lead to invention and so on.”
VILSECK — On Friday Sept. 5, U.S. Army Medical Department Activity Bavaria held its change of command ceremony where they bid farewell to the outgoing commander, U.S. Army Col. Zack Solomon and welcomed the incoming commander, U.S. Army Col. Colin Frament. Presiding over the ceremony was U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and director of Defense Health Network Europe. MEDDAC Bavaria is an integrated ambu-
latory health system supporting over 40,000 Soldiers, Family Members, and Civilians in 3 countries and 8 separate communities. The command has 5 ambulatory health clinics located in Ansbach, Grafenwöhr, Hohenfels, Stuttgart, and Vilseck, and an operational medicine clinic at forward operating station in Mihail Kogalniceanu, Romania, and until recently, an operational medicine clinic at Novo Selo Training Area, Bulgaria. Headquartered at Rose Barracks in Vilseck, the command provides health services and force health protection to the 7th Army Training Command, USAREUR’s combat brigades, and three garrisons.
largest and one of its most enchanting lakes. Offering dramatic alpine landscapes in the north and Mediterranean scenery in the south, Lake Garda is a perfect destination for travelers who want both adventure and relaxation.
Whether you’re climbing mountain trails, ferry-hopping across the lake, or enjoying a lakeside aperitivo at sunset, Lake Garda offers an extraordinary mix of adventure, culture, and cuisine. With its alpine backdrop and mild climate, the area around Riva del Garda is especially well-suited for active travelers looking to soak in the best of northern Italy without the crowds of the more famous lakes.
Riva del Garda: A Paradise for hikers and bikers
On the northern tip of Lake Garda, the town of Riva del Garda sits cradled between steep cliffs and sparkling water, making it a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers will find panoramic trails leading to Monte Brione, Ponale Road, or the more challenging Cima SAT above the old town.
Mountain bikers, too, will love the vast network of trails, though many routes involve steep ascents and rocky terrain. This is where e-bike rentals come in — available throughout Riva and neighboring Torbole. E-bikes make it easy for riders of all levels to climb high mountain roads while still enjoying the downhill thrill.
Rental Prices: Expect to pay around €40–€60/day for a high-quality electric mountain bike.
Guided Tours: Available for both road and mountain biking, often including food and lake views.
Lake Garda by ferry: A Relaxing Way to Explore
To experience Lake Garda in full, hop on a ferry operated by Navigazione Lago di Garda. These ferries connect the northern and southern ends of the lake, making day trips to towns like Sirmione, Desenzano, or Bardolino easy and scenic.
Ferry from Riva del Garda to Sirmione: Approx. 4 hours (with stops), or quicker by hydrofoil.
Tickets: Range from €10–€25 depending on the distance and speed of the boat.

Northern Italian cuisine: Refined and hearty
Unlike the tomato-heavy dishes of southern Italy, Northern Italian cuisine reflects Alpine influences and the lake’s bounty. In and around Lake Garda, meals often feature polenta, lake fish, grilled meats, truffle, and rich cheeses like Taleggio or Grana Padano.
Typical dishes include:
• Carne Salada – Thinly sliced cured beef, often grilled or served raw with arugula.
• Risotto al Tartufo – Truffle risotto from the Lombardy and Trentino regions.
• Bigoli con le Sarde – A thick pasta with a sauce of lake sardines and onions.
• Torta di Mele di Nonna – Apple cake with a regional twist, popular in mountain towns.
Pair your meal with Lugana (a crisp white wine) or Valpolicella (a rich red) from nearby vineyards.
High vs. Low Season: When to visit
High Season: June to August
Expect warm temperatures (up to 32°C / 90°F), busy restaurants, and high accommodation prices — especially on weekends.
Book early for Riva, as it’s a favorite with German and Austrian travelers. Low to Shoulder Season: Late April–May and September–October
Trails and towns are quieter, the weather is mild (18–25°C / 64–77°F), and hotel prices drop.
Autumn offers the added charm of harvest season — ideal for wine tastings and enjoying golden lake views.
Climate: Summer and Fall
Summer (June–August): Warm and sunny, with average highs between 28–32°C (82–90°F). Occasional afternoon thunderstorms may roll in from the mountains.
Fall (September–October): Pleasantly cooler, with daytime highs between 18–25°C (64–77°F) and crisp, dry air perfect for hiking and biking.
Evenings in fall can be cool, so bring a light jacket.
Accommodations: What to expect
In the summer high season, 3-star hotels in Riva del Garda average around €130–€180/night, with lakeside properties often higher. In the fall or spring, prices can drop to €80–€120/night for the same level of comfort.
There are also many family-run guesthouses (pensioni), apartment rentals, and boutique hotels, especially appealing for longer stays or travelers with bikes and gear.
