As we embrace the arrival of summer, I wanted to take a moment to extend my warmest wishes for safe travels and enjoyable moments with your family and friends. Whether you're embarking on exciting adventures or simply taking some well-deserved time off, I hope this summer brings you an abundance of joy and relaxation.
During your travels, I encourage you to keep an open eye for inspiration. If you come across any ideas or thoughts that you believe would benefit ACC, please don't hesitate to share them with me. Your insights and suggestions play a crucial role in shaping our Club and ensuring that we continuously meet the needs and desires of our valued Membership.
As we enter the summer months, we understand that it's also a bittersweet time as some of you will be leaving the ACC family. We hope that you depart with cherished memories of your time at the Club, and we sincerely hope to welcome you back someday.
Summer at ACC is filled with exciting events and activities for those of you staying in town. We have prepared an enticing lineup of experiences for your enjoyment. Our annual 4th of July Party is back this year as a vibrant pool party, promising an unforgettable celebration complete with delightful food, lively entertainment.
For our younger members, we are delighted to offer the popular Kids Summer Camp and Fun Pool Days, where they can indulge in entertaining activities and create lasting memories. And of course, our summer barbecues, held every two weeks on Sigis Deck, provide the perfect opportunity to savor mouthwatering food while relishing the warm weather and the company of your family and fellow members.
The summer months also grant us a valuable opportunity to reflect on the first half of the year. We will be taking the time to review our progress and identify areas where we can further enhance your experience at the Club. Our recently joined Chefs, Chef Jimmy in Sigis, and Chef Paper in the Pastry, have
settled in and are eager to introduce new ideas and concepts upon your return.
At ACC, we are dedicated to continuously enhancing your experience. In addition to planning exciting activities, as mentioned by the President, Management will be working closely with the Planning Committee over the summer to implement our Capital Expenditure (Capex) projects in the second half of the year. These initiatives include improvements to the Terrace salad bar and cake area, enhancements to the private rooms in Sigis, new furniture in Rendezvous, the much-awaited refurbishment of the California and San Francisco Rooms, and other behind-the-scenes enhancements such as structural and waterproofing improvements for the sports areas, as well as the second phase of implementing the Athena Software System.
Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting projects. Our Capex plans are designed with a 3-5 year rolling cycle, ensuring a consistent and forward-looking approach to improving our Club and enhancing your experience.
This highlights the vital connection between the goals set by the Club Committee and the management's direction. It is crucial that we work together in pursuit of these objectives to maintain the excellence that defines the Club.
Membership is the lifeblood of ACC, and we greatly appreciate your continued support. As some of your friends may depart, you may also be making new acquaintances. I kindly encourage you to refer them to the Club, so they too can experience the outstanding offerings and sense of community we provide. By expanding our membership base, we strengthen the bonds that make ACC a remarkable place to be.
Looking back at the first six months of this year, we have achieved significant milestones despite the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic. As we embark on the second half of the year, I am confident that we will continue to thrive and create memorable experiences for you. Your enthusiasm and commitment are vital to the Club's success, and I am grateful for your ongoing support.
On behalf of the entire management team, I wish you a fantastic summer filled with relaxation, adventure, and cherished moments with your loved ones. We eagerly await your return, and I assure you that we will be ready to provide you with an exceptional and exciting experience at ACC.

With the series of activities initiated by the ACC Community Outreach Committee echoing Earth Month still fresh in our memory, one new event stood out and sparked the curiosity of many of our members –The Lego Donation Drive.
Lego is a familiar household name to all members of our community spanning across a few generations. Most of the members and their families have likely vacationed at the Legoland theme parks, watched Lego Movies, and enjoyed family bonding time through Lego building. It was during one of these moments that inspired one of our members to start a sustainable and socially impactful movement: “play it forward”.
“The idea is to encourage those who are ready to part ways with their Legos, to pass them forward to others who have either never seen them, or simply can’t afford them”, says Will Chen, whose young son has recently passed forward his own beloved collection to the rural schools in Taiwan.
This idea first came about a few years ago, when Will observed the many benefits his son derived from creative play in early childhood, which fostered critical thinking and problem-solving skills that laid the foundation for STEM learning in later developmental years. “What if more children can share the same benefits without added cost, by sharing and reusing the same resources? Like children’s books in the library?”, which prompted Will to start researching online. He discovered various initiatives in the US, Canada and UK (ranging from local communities to national government levels, e.g., Nova Scotia Department of Education partnered with the Canadian Lego Replay program.”). However, Will couldn’t find such programs in Taiwan. Determined to make a difference, Will decided to establish a charitable organization dedicated to this cause.
However, just as Will was prepared to launch his initiative, the global pandemic struck, dampening the concept and appeal of recycling and regiving used toys on both ends of the equation. The plan was put on hold until the timing felt more appropriate. But, as the pandemic dragged on for years, Will started to waver and almost gave up on the idea. It wasn’t until August 2022, when Will learned about ACC Community Outreach’s donation campaign, that once again reignited his motivation to act and give back. This campaign featured Green Miracle, which is a non-profit organization that
recycles 3C products from public donations (launched by SystemLead Tech). For over 10 years, the organization has been helping underprivileged children, NGOs, and new immigrants in Taiwan, in addressing their digital divide. This charitable cause resonates well with Will’s vision of reuse of resources and bridging gaps. Through the ACC connection, Will had an in-depth conversation with the President of Green Miracle, from which he learned a great deal about the operational barriers and difficulties of such recycling programs, as well as the challenges and rewards in making sustainable long-term impact for positive changes.
This series of events served as a catalyst for Will to put thoughts into action. Thus, he founded The ReGivers, a non-profit organization aiming to create a sustainable platform for anyone to pass
forward their Lego, benefiting others while helping our environment in reducing carbon emission.
The result of the Lego Donation Drive was remarkable, with 30 boxes of full sets and 86.7 kilograms (approximately 61,000 pieces) of loose pieces received. While some were surprised by the amount, Will wasn’t: “I realized that most of us are charitable at heart and willing to give back. But perhaps, we lack the catalyst, or a sense of urgency to act. That’s why you usually see an outpouring of donations right after earthquakes and disasters, but less so on social issues that impact far more people on a longer time horizon. ACC’s Community Outreach campaigns bring us the awareness of these issues, give us the urgency to act, and serve as a catalyst to give back.”
Will repeatedly expressed his appreciation to all the ACC Members and to the Community Outreach for supporting him on this quest. He said with such humility that he saw so many people doing their parts and he was just leveraging off the synergy. But maybe just like how building Lego goes, it all starts with the first block. Will and the ReGivers laid the foundation, then brick by brick, the rest of us continue to build on top and expand, infinitely.
Play it forward.
We all encounter relationship issues from time to time and sometimes, we need a little help to work things out. The goal of The Community Services Center’s counseling team is to offer top mental health care to the local and international community from licensed therapists.
Community Services Center therapist, Miranda Lin, MS, LPC enjoys her work and finds much success, as a relationship counselor in helping clients get in touch with themselves and significant others at a deeper level. When new understandings and insights occur, clients are able to bond with others in healthier ways.
Miranda emphasizes the importance of having a safe space for couples to be able to share their stories. Communication is a major factor in any relationship. “As a therapist, I look for patterns in how couples relate and interact with each other, then find a common ground that they can work from.”
Relationship counseling focuses on attentive listening, empathy, support and effective (non-abusive) ways of expressing feelings, emotions and thoughts that couples have been afraid of showing their partner. Learning how to explore issues in their relationship, work on their communication, improve their interactions with each other are key relationship counseling goals.
As couples experience and realize that they have been heard and respected during their counseling sessions and that their feelings have been validated, new insights begin to open up allowing them to rethink their relationship and its difficulties from different perspectives. This is an important shift for them for it offers an opportunity for change and new directions to occur within the relationship. The couple can then move forward continuing to demonstrate their improved communication skills, set new goals and objectives for themselves. Every relationship has conflict. It’s learning how we handle our conflicts that can make our relationships
stronger. Effective therapy depends not only on the skills and experience of the therapist but also on the willingness of the couple. Relational issues such as family, parent-child, couple and personal issues are common for both expats and locals. When working with clients, Miranda employs a strengthbased counseling approach and has worked with a wide range of clinical issues both short-term and long-term. She prefers incorporating an integrative approach utilizing person-center theory, emotionally-focused therapy, transactional analysis theory and cognitive behavioral theory – because each counseling situation is unique. Using the right supportive approach helps clients process their feelings in a deep healing and self-compassionate way. It was at this point, I asked Miranda her suggestions for people who may be having some issues but were afraid of reaching out to a counselor because they didn’t know if it was something worth talking about.
“There are often misconceptions about counseling,” Miranda shared. “You don’t have to be mentally ill or dealing with a dire situation to receive professional help. Counseling services provide people an opportunity to meet with themselves without being affected by other people’s thoughts or feelings. A professional therapist is trained to help people get in touch with themselves, hear their own voices, and find the path they desire for their lives. So from my opinion, everyone can benefit from having counseling sessions.”
“The concept of ‘counseling’ in western countries has become a common practice for maintaining good mental health. It is taking a bit longer here in Taiwan to be accepted, however, more and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of counseling. And, as I like to use the analogy, the benefits from counseling are like receiving a mental massage! Who doesn’t want to go for massage to allow themselves to recharge?”

The Spring Tennis Tournament was once again a resounding success, drawing high attendance across all categories and proving to be a popular event among our members. To conclude the tournament, we held an Award Presentation Ceremony, which featured a wonderful buffet spread that was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. The Club's Board of Governors, including Injay Tai, Henry Chang, and Amber Persson, were also present to award trophies to the players.
We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who made this event possible and successful, including the players, sponsors, organizers, and spectators. Without each of their contributions, this tournament would not have been possible. Thank you all !

Happy to do all of of these cleaning activities with ACC members. Thank you so much for a great event and good job!
It was fun community service which we didn't think there were so many trash in this small area of the river side. The organization helped us learn at this outing.
