Abergeldie designs and constructs complex infrastructure projects for a range of clients including local governments and transport infrastructure owners.
Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive Link
Abergeldie was engaged by Wollongong City Council to deliver the Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive link which included the relocation of overhead 33kV and 11kV aerial feeder cabling and poles within the rail corridor. This allowed for an extension of Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive and a new intersection with the Princes Highway. Contracts were awarded to Abergeldie in a series of stages, with works delivered as a coordinated program.
To deliver this highly complex project, the team worked with various time restrictions to ensure minimal disturbance to the local community. Works within the live rail corridor were carried out while normal rail traffic continued. Working near schools meant a restriction on material haulage via the school during school zone hours.
Camp Street Bridge Replacement
Abergeldie was selected by Roads and Maritime Services (now Transport for NSW) to replace the Camp Street bridge over Lake Forbes. The Camp Street Bridge Replacement project delivered a newer, safer main access road to Forbes town centre for residents and visitors to the region. This project, included demolition of the existing 60m long, 2-lane concrete bridge over Lake Forbess and construction of the replacement 70m bridge with two 5m travel lanes, a 4m wide shared path on one side and 2m wide footway on the other.

This significant upgrade to the network improved sewerage infrastructure for a growing number of residents and businesses across Brisbane. The project, which included gravity trunk sewer installation using trenchless technology, was a finalist in the CCF QLD Earth Awards.
The contract was varied at the client’s request to include the pipe-jacked construction of a new Fortrose Street rising main and Jindalee water main replacement, which went on to win the IPEAQ Innovation in Water Award in 2019.
Mandalong Vent Shaft
Abergeldie was engaged to design and construct one vertical, hydrostatically lined, blind bored ventilation shaft to serve underground mine works at Centennial Coal’s Mandalong operations near Lake Macquarie on the Central Cost of NSW. Works for the 5.5m diameter, 360, deep shaft were carried out on an active mine site, requiring strict obervance of mine safety and environmental protection procedures, and close cooperation with the mines operations management team.
Shaft sinking was carried out using Abergeldie’s owned, operated and maintained blind boring rigs, which are the world’s largest of their type.

ENERGY STORAGE
Hydraulic Storage (>100MW - 200MWhrs)
Utilising our expertise in blind bored shafts, a large piston and cylinder is constructed underground. From its charged position, potential energy of the piston at the top of the shaft forces water through a turbine which is connected to a generator supporting the electrical network. The system can be tailored for specific needs and adapted for fast discharge over varying durations.
Pumped Hydro (>100MW/>1GWhrs)
Our largest energy storage system, providing hundreds of megawatts over many hours to days. This system uses the potential energy stored in a large reservoir at an elevated position. When energy is required water is released from the elevated storage via a turbine that produces electrical energy. When energy is plentiful, the process is reversed and water is returned to the upper storage ready for the next cycle.
Gravity Storage (>100MW - 100MWhrs)
Designed to provide short term support and can deliver maximum power in a short time. A heavy mass is suspended in an enclosed shaft storing potential energy. When energy is needed to firm and stabilise electrical networks, the mass is allowed to drop converting the potential energy of the suspended mass via a generator and delivering synchronised electrical energy to a network.
17
Abergeldie applies its extensive experience and unique capabilities to deliver large scale energy storage systems that enable the transition to 100% dependable renewable energy. There are three types of energy storage solutions we offer.
Abergeldie and ITP Thermal established Ardent Underground to provide high purity, economical and safe underground hydrogen storage, the missing link to a green hydrogen future. Our blind bore drilling method offers a replicable, small footprint solution which can store up to 500 tonnes per shaft.
18
Drill Rig
Safe Storage
Hydrogen is stored in an environment absent of oxygen and any potential ignition source and risk of impact to the tank
Affordable
The surrounding rock takes on the duty of containing the hydrogen pressure – no need for costly pressure containment materials
Replicable
The shaft storage construction process can be reproduced in different locations with minimal design adjustment
Pure Hydrogen Storage
Storing compressed hydrogen deep underground, without affecting hydrogen purity
Large Scale
Hydrogen storage sizes of up to 500 tonnes per shaft. For larger storage, multiple shafts can be built in the same location
Small Footprint
The above ground footprint is very small compared to equivalent pressure vessel storage
