Abergeldie is a locally owned contractor with close to 30 years’ experience, delivering complex projects in the infrastructure, rail, utilities and energy sectors across Australia and New Zealand. In the rail sector, we offer expertise in delivering rail infrastructure projects designed to futureproof the rail network. Our recent experience includes station access upgrades, high voltage power substations, rail corridor works, rail construction, retaining walls, tunnels, roads and bridges for clients including but not limited to Transport for NSW (TfNSW), Sydney Metro, Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and Queensland Rail (QR).

Delivering rail infrastructure that improves and connects communities Abergeldie designs and delivers multidisciplinary rail projects including works within the rail corridor as well as associated rail infrastructure works such as rail bridges, substations and new station infrastructure. OUR PEOPLE We pride ourselves on they way our people collaborate with clients to plan and deliver projects. Our team is highly trained and experienced with over 650+ local staff including specialist rail engineers, civil, rail and OHW personnel, Digital Engineering/BIM Engineers, with rail corridor and possession experience.

DIGITAL ENGINEERING BIM We use BIM on rail projects to identify service clashes, customer experience, model temporary works and provide stakeholder information. It has recently been used on our Digital Systems Projects at Homebush and Sydenham with great results. BIM can also identify potential risks between planned construction works and commuters.

PROVEN SAFETY TRACK RECORD Safety is our number one priority, and with extensive experience in rail shutdowns, corridor works and live operating environments, we have developed well detailed procedures and systems to ensure an extremely high level of safety management is executed on every project.

INTEGRATION, TESTING AND COMMISSIONING Robust integration, testing and commissioning provides the best project outcomes. Our Test, Commission and Handover Plans ensure the works have been constructed, tested and maintained in accordance with the requirements of the project.

Competent and experienced in multidisciplinary rail projects We are a competent and experienced team with a proven track record in designing and delivering multidisciplinary rail projects to future-proof rail networks. Our experience includes accessibility upgrades including new passenger lifts, pathways, stairs and overhead canopies, new amenities, commuter car parks, as well as high voltage power substations, rail corridor works, rail construction, retaining walls, tunnels, roads and bridges for clients including but not limited to Transport for NSW (TfNSW), Sydney Metro, Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and Queensland Rail (QR).

SHOO Early Works Werai Abergeldie was engaged by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) to complete the early works of the Southern Highlands Overtaking Opportunities (SHOO) project in Werai, NSW. The early works will be integral to the broader SHOO project, which aims to develop track and signalling infrastructure that will enable the safe overtaking of freight trains up to 1,800m. Abergeldie’s involvement in this project involved a range of critical tasks, including the reconditioning of 273m of both the up and down main south lines, embankment widening, drainage enhancements, and the implementation of signalling systems to facilitate significant operational improvement.

Digital Systems Program Homebush and Sydenham Control Centre Main Works Abergeldie is replacing the existing signalling and train control systems at Homebush and Sydenham with modern, internationally recognised technology that will allow more frequent and reliable services for commuters as part of TfNSW’s Digital Systems Program.

Seven Hills and Gordon Station Canopies Abergeldie was engaged as head contractor for the fabrication and installation of shelter canopies on Seven Hills and Gordon train stations. The projects also included installation of new lighting as well as upgrades to on-platform amenities including seating, windbreaks, bins and wayfinding signage.

Granville Junction and Chalmers Street Traction Power Substations Abergeldie was engaged as head contractor to design and construct two new substations as part of the Sydney Trains Power Supply Upgrade (PSU) portfolio of works to meet the power demands of the new generation air-conditioned, eight-car set Waratah trains. Scope at both locations also included upgrading and re-routing existing 33kV and 11kV feeder cables in the rail corridor and on adjacent Council property to improve network reliability and maintainability.

New Intercity Fleet AC Feeder Stage 2 project Abergeldie is delivering the AC Feeder Stage 2 Project to meet the expanded power requirements for the future rail network and new fleet of airconditioned trains. The works involve upgrades to substations, section huts and overhead wiring and feeders as well as the construction of new infrastructure across the network.

Railway Station Carpark Conversions Program – Package 1 Abergeldie was appointed as managing contractor for design and construction of works at existing car parks for employees and commuters to increase the number of public car park spaces and improve pedestrian access at 28 railway stations, 2 rail/bus interchanges and a ferry/bus interchange. The works are being carried out as part of the Transport for NSW Rail Access Program.

Adamstown Station Footbridge Renewal Abergeldie was engaged as head contractor for the demolition of the existing stairs and footbridge over the rail corridor at Adamstown railway station, the fabrication and installation of a new footbridge and stairs, construction of two lift wells and installation of lifts, and improvements to passenger amenities on both station platforms.

Pocket Park Pedestrian Underpass Project Abergeldie was appointed to design and construct a tunnel for a pedestrian and cyclist pathway through an embankment under a live railway line at a construction site for Sydney Olympic Park. Meticulous planning and collaboration were key to the success of this project. Hour-by-hour programming helped to ensure the rail tracks on the embankment above the underpass alignment were removed and replaced during a single possession. Adding to the complexity of this project was the 260t crane lift for the culvert underpass.

Broadmeadow Station Upgrade Under the Transport Access Program, Abergeldie delivered the Broadmeadow Station Upgrade project to improve access for the disabled and upgrade amenities on railway station platforms. The scope included construction of three lift wells; installation of three passenger lifts; new electrical substation; electrical conduit connections beneath rail corridor; upgrades to stairs, ramps and subways; signage; lighting; and new rain shelters and amenities on all four platforms.

Scone – ARTC Hunter Valley Track Reconditioning and Earthworks FY22+ Abergeldie recently completed track reconditioning and drainage works in Scone as part of a multi-year package of works for the Australian Rail Track Corporation to improve track reliability and reduce the ongoing track maintenance activities. The works completed in Scone were comprised of three scopes, with 340m of track fully reconditioned across a 1km work area. The works involved cess drainage upgrades, 730m of rail adjustment, access road works and miscellaneous corridor improvement activities. The works were completed within the 46-hour close-down and delivered safely, with no incidents.

ARTC Victoria Street Up Main Track Reconditioning Abergeldie recently completed the Victoria Street Up Main Track Reconditioning project. The works involved 130m of total track reconditioning and 200m of undercutting on the Up Main adjacent to the Victoria Street Platform, East Maitland and a 180m of track reconditioning with a new drainage system on the Down Coal. The works were successfully completed over the 46-hour major close-down.

Across all projects, we aim to ensure we mitigate environmental impact with comprehensive Construction Environmental Management Plans and are working towards our goal of net zero operational emissions. We are also committed to working with our supply chain to create value for local communities and have zero tolerance for modern slavery. Abergeldie is also passionate about fostering a diverse and inclusive culture that promotes and values different perspectives and backgrounds. We actively support women in engineering and women in management and are committed to reconciliation. In 2021 our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan was formally recognised by Reconciliation Australia. Giving back to the communities where we live and work is part of who we are as an engineering business. Since being established in 1994, Abergeldie has given back 0.1% of annual revenue (not profit) to local charity organisations, some of which include WaterAid, Vinnies, Landcare, Mates in Construction (NZ), Engineers Without Borders and Beyond Blue.
