LETTER FROM THE EDITOR -in-CHIEF

As the pandemic gradually recedes in Taiwan and enter the New Normal, your friends may be planning trips overseas and relishing newfound freedom. Amidst an era brimming with both challenges and opportunities, we aspire for all individuals worldwide to gain awareness of macro and micro trends, adopt ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices for a sustainable future, and value their “Me Time.”

With the EU's announcement of the carbon tariff in December 2022, ESG has emerged as the most crucial factor for global businesses to remain competitive. It is evident that we have now entered an era where companies that prioritize ESG and demonstrate a commitment to sustainable practices and social responsibility are likely to have a better chance of surviving and thriving. For years, the founder of Velo, Stella Yu, has been aware of ESG and committed to contributing to a sustainable future. She has consistently demanded innovation and top-quality products from Velo to uphold these values.

As a member of BAS (Bicycling Alliance for Sustainability), we are making preparations for the Taiwanese bike industry to go global. Our efforts have even taken us to the Nordic Circle, where we gained insights into the EU's stricter regulations due to the region's alarming rate of climate change, which is four times higher than the global average.

While we strive towards a sustainable future, we also recognize those who have discovered a passion for cycling during the three years of paused life caused by the pandemic. In this edition of Contact Points, we celebrate the joys of cycling and the importance of “Me Time.” We have many wonderful articles including "From VELO to Love" and "Cherish Our Beautiful Me Time" featuring Velo's VP, Ann Chen, and other fellow cyclists sharing their cherished cycling experiences.

Let’s embark on this sustainable and intimate fabulous journey together!

ME TIME From VELO to LOVE

The world entered the post-pandemic era after three years of uncertainty. Despite the difficult times, a glimmer of hope emerged, reminding people of the purpose of their lives. Throughout the pandemic, many individuals discovered the joys and advantages of cycling and for some, like Velo, it became a transformation from Velo to Love.

With an annual production of over 15 million saddles, Velo spreads the joy of cycling to enthusiasts worldwide. Stella Yu, the company's founder, dedicates herself to meeting every customer's needs and relentlessly pursuing innovation. Her unwavering love for her family and customers, coupled with her fervor for innovation, drives her to lead Velo to its position as the world's top producer of cycling saddles. This love transformed into “Me Time” for Ann Chen, VP of Velo and cyclists globally.

Although the pandemic limited people's ability to move around freely, it also prompted individuals to contemplate how to revitalize themselves. Taking time for oneself, or "Me Time," has become a popular trend for individuals seeking to detach from their busy daily lives. Ann's preferred method of creating her own "Me Time" was through her exercise routine.

Ann admits that despite frequently cycling with colleagues around Taiwan, she had never established a consistent exercise routine. When the pandemic forced her to stay indoors, she was shocked to discover that she had gained a significant amount of weight from her daily sedentary routine, consuming three meals a day and sleeping. Embarrassed by her size, she began a solo fitness journey using her treadmill and stationary bike at home.

“It was such an ordeal in the beginning because I was not used to working out regularly. Whenever I thought of the 50 minutes exercise routine, I’d rather stay at my office and work! I forced myself to exercise and stop getting fatter!” With her Capricorn nature, she persevered through the initial three months of difficulty and eventually began to savor the enjoyable aspect of exercising.

“I slept much better and became more focused while working. Later on, I simply had to work out every single day. I watched TV when I exercised and fully enjoyed the “Me Time”. The most satisfying moment was when I regained my perfect figure!” Ann simply accepts all compliments of her wonderful figure with a smile.

Another unexpected result of Ann’s daily exercise regime was that she started testing out the new saddles herself. After a long period of daily training on the bike, Ann gradually became a user more than a manufacturer. She started to understand the intricacies of why customers or designers would make certain requests instead of merely focusing on the structure and sturdiness of the saddles. With this new realization, she was now able to come up with more practical suggestions in R&D meetings. The only issue was that due to Velo's extensive range of products, it would require a significant amount of time for her to complete testing all of them. Nevertheless, Ann is confident that the transition from Velo to Love aligns with the founder's intentions. Furthermore, both she and many other new cyclists take pleasure in indulging in "Me Time" and pampering themselves.

ANN’S VOYAGE

MINIWIZ REVOLUTIONIZES CIRCULAR ECONOMY BY UPCYCLING TRASH

Most likely, Arthur Huang, founder and C.E.O. of Miniwiz can relate to “pioneers travel along”. While most companies all over the world try to learn about ESG (Environmental, social, and governance), Arthur had been leading his team on the path to combat climate change and global warming for over a decade. Ann Chen, V.P. of Velo recently visited their office to pick Arthur’s brain.

One might be surprised to find everything in Miniwiz’s R&D office, from chairs, construction materials, sunglasses, suits, and sneakers to bags are all products upcycled from the trash. Claiming “trash is sexy,” Arthur walks the talk by manifesting various upcycled utilitarian objects.

From the 9-story EcoARK in 2010 Taipei Flora Expo made from plastic bottles, Nike Lab built from thrown-away-sneakers-turned bricks, the inflatable SkyWing rest area built from recycled plastic bottles in Suvarnabhumi Airport, Thailand, and the ongoing AR-1-2 Taipower Distribution Center urban renewal project in Nankang, these are just a few of his international embodiment of circular economy

in intelligent architecture. All these cases infused with unlimited innovations subverted people’s preconceptions and stereotypes toward garbage recycling, sustainability and zero carbon emission.

9 ANN'S VOYAGE

ARTHUR HUANG, THE HAPPY LONE SUSTAINABILITY PIONEER

How did Arthur start his sustainability journey? It started with a fierce fire toward fast fashion. “Growing up in fabric and shoe industries, seeing factories with two-week or even one-week product life cycles making cheap $10USD shirts and $20USD jackets, no wonder factories never cared about wastewater management. Under this circumstance, a sustainable environment simply only exists on paper!” Arthur doesn’t see the need to hide his tree-huger sentiment.

Studying archaeology in Rome one day, Arthur found the walls of the Pantheon were full of trash. It struck him that if one of the most beautiful architecture was made of trash, he can also contribute to the world by building upcycled cycle architecture made of trash! “Human beings are closely connected to architecture which produces the highest carbon emission. Most people have the wrong impression that cows make lots of CO2. In fact, 40% of CO2 is made in architecture while 50% of global energy is spent in architecture, such as air conditioning and construction. The second highest contributing sector of CO2 is transportation.”

Inspired by ancient Roman architecture, Arthur founded Miniwiz dedicated to challenging climate changes and environmental pollution. His core techniques can upcycle disposable plastics, and other wastes like metal and glass into architecture modules, installations, furniture, and medical supplies. Recently, trash such as cigarette butts, fabric, paper, broken glasses, masks, and DVDs were deconstructed and reconstructed into various water-resistant, moldresistant and fire-proof cycle construction materials. Since architecture requires a lot of materials, Arthur transforms tons and tons of waste to be utilized in new buildings to repay love to Mother Earth.

“For example, we collect the waste material from the production lines making Velo saddles and make them into bricks that compose Velo’s new factories. Now, this is referred to as green cycle.” Arthur smiles and points to the saddles brought by Ann and summarizes his story of the past two decades from the huge investment in equipment to challenges in R&D, and difficulties in marketing in the early stages. Now, Miniwiz has invented more than 1200 applications for recycled materials and has become the leading brand in sustainable innovation. These seemingly endless possibilities in new construc-tion materials expand people’s horizons in architecture.

Bringing several Velo saddles along to learn from Miniwiz, Ann was impressed by the unlimited prospects of recycling. Wearing the sunglasses gifted by Arthur, Ann was happy to see that these recycled sunglasses are actually nice-looking and fashionable!

RECYCLE AND REUSE VELO VP ANN CHEN’S GRAND PLAN FOR SUSTAINABLE SADDLES

Ann knows that bicycles are generally considered to be a more environmentally friendly mode of transportation compared to cars or other motor vehicles. However, the manufacturing process itself can contribute to pollution and carbon emissions. Similar to Miniwiz, innovation is the most essential element in Velo. Ann’s current mission is to make saddles more sustainable in construction and production. “Our ultimate goal is to recycle and reuse. We have been using the most advanced materials and developing more and more greener materials. But my dream is to make saddles adaptable so that the customers can pick and choose parts in our stores to tailor to their individual liking.” Ann explains that the saddles are made in one piece now, but she hopes to find a way for customers to construct their own perfect saddles.

Listening to Ann with full attention, Arthur suddenly stood up, picked up a chair, took it apart and then put it back together. Arthur asks Ann, “is this what you want? It’s like the furniture that one can personalize similar to working with Lego bricks. I can change the height of this chair to fit the desk, or to match a sofa.”

Ann was quite impressed by the rapid thinking of Arthur to provide an instant example. “Yes. We want to make more choices available to the customers in materials and designs. Cyclists can change elements of their saddles according to their preferences, moods, purposes, or distances by picking desired accessories for each time they ride. Or when a part of the saddle is broken, the rider can replace that small part like getting a new phone case to make Velo saddles more sustainable.” Ann stresses that being the part that is closest to cyclists, the saddle is one of most important components of the cycling experience. Therefore, comfort, flexibility, safety and weight-bearing durability are all important parts of making a great saddle that contributes to a joyful ride and helps riders perform better.

Arthur says they never allocate any budget for marketing because their investment in R&D IS marketing. Trying to recycle trash into innovative materials that constitute a sustainable future is easier said than done. If Miniwiz does not transform dreadful trash into new materials, architects and designers can’t construct any green buildings at all. Miniwiz closes the gap between recycling and cycle construction industries, or rather, made a bridge between them to expand the room in which sustainable materials can apply.

There is a bike at the entrance of Arthur’s office. As a cyclist, he is very interested in Ann’s idea. “Maybe we can ask more bike companies to work together and invent a whole new concept bike with completely new materials and designs. It will be so cool to solidify Ann’s idea and create such a concept bike!” Always spinning new ideas, Arthur gets excited when he thinks about new collaboration projects!

Last but not least, Arthur takes Ann to the Miniwiz Trash Lab Concept Store where anyone can come in and experiment. People can see how trash is recycled and made into something new and can sign up for some DIY (Do-It-Yourself) projects to make something that they can use daily. There is a huge circular installation comprised of recycled LLDPE (Linear Low Density Polyethylene) thin layered blocks that can be taken apart and put into any desired shapes. Visitors can climb this gigantic installation as if fish swimming among coral reefs to join in a circular revolution in dealing with trash from a new perspective.

VELO 2023 GRAND ERA

NET ZERO CARBON EMISSIONS, ESG, VELO IS COMMITTED TO A SUSTAINABLE PLANET

Following three years of the pandemic, a fresh sense of stability has emerged with the reactivation of all economic activities. At the same time, Euro announced the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will enter into a transitional phase as of October 1, 2023, and take effect in 2027. This meant that for all imported products, if the amount of carbon emitted during production surpasses the permitted limit of the importing country, additional costs are incurred in the form of carbon certificates and tariffs. As a result, the significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors has heightened, and they are now essential for businesses to thrive within the EU.

Since 44% of Taiwanese bikes are sold to the EU, CBAM certainly will greatly impact the Taiwanese bicycle industry. EU’s new policy in response to the global warming crisis reveals the main challenges we are facing: How serious is global warming? How does it impact the environment and ecology? As the foremost global leader in the bike industry, how can Taiwanese bike corporations navigate the efforts to combat climate change? Let's investigate this issue from the front line of the climate crisis, the Arctic Circle.

NEW RECORD HIGH WEATHER IN THE ARCTIC CIRCLE SIGNIFIES RED ALERT FOR GLOBAL WARMING

Located at 78°N and 15°E, with a human population of 2,500 and 3,000 polar bears, Svalbard is the northernmost inhabited island on the planet and is currently experiencing the greatest rise in average temperature. Over 60% of its terrain comprises magnificent and breathtaking glaciers, where the frigid northern wind once conversed with icebergs. However, now one can only hear the heartwrenching sound of ice fragments breaking apart.

Research has indicated that temperatures in the Arctic are rising four times faster than in other regions, and the average temperature in Svalbard has reached a record high of 7.4°C. As a result of seven consecutive years of higher than average temperatures, numerous icebergs have melted into the water. This has led to the loss of habitats for

15

polar bears, which are now dying of starvation due to prolonged swimming time. Reindeer populations have also been devastated as they are unable to find sufficient food on the tundra. Additionally, the melting permafrost will release a significant amount of methane, as well as up to 1021 microbes (including bacteria, viruses, and fungi) and 1.7 trillion CO2 previously stored in the ground, into the air each year. This will cause sea levels to rise, leading to a global catastrophe.

“RECYCLE AND REUSE,” VELO COMMITS TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

The rapid and severe implications of global warming have prompted the EU and the US to develop guidelines for carbon emissions and tariffs. As a part of the global economy, the bicycle industry is bound by these regulations. Recognizing the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors, Stella Yu, the founder of Velo, has embraced cycling and advocated for sustainable practices.

Adhering to industry standards such as REACH, ISO, CPSIA, JIS, and GB (China), as well as international carbon footprint and carbon emissions regulations such as ISO 14067 and ISO 14064-1, Velo is commited to minimize the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes. “We are not only fulfilling the minimum standards in reducing carbon emissions but want to prepare a better world for our next generation! Similarly, our commitment to a sustainable environment is the key to connecting with our clients and when they choose Velo, they are also contributing to a better future!” Stella emphasizes that Velo upholds the strictest standards in quality control and ESG practices. Through innovative recycling techniques, Velo minimizes waste and produces top-tier sustainable products.

Currently, Velo's primary focus is on the implementation of ISO 14067 and ISO 140641. With regard to energy conservation, Velo has adopted a new system equipped with smart meters in 2023 to monitor electric consumption and carbon emissions. Furthermore, the solar energy panels that Velo installed on its factory rooftops in Taiwan are expected to reduce carbon emissions by 216,798 Kg CO2/KWH annually. Over the years, Velo has acquired HEVs, electric forklifts, and electric trailers which have significantly reduced CO2 emissions in the production process. In addition to monitoring greenhouse gas emissions, all Velo products comply with major international regulations to promote a safer environment.

For example, all Velo products are REACH and ROSE certified. Velo's children's saddles and grips are certified with EN ISO8098, while the adult versions are certified with ISO4210 and ISO8098.

At Velo, our top priorities in production are recycling and reusing. We source materials with PCR or GRS certifications to reduce the usage of petrochemical raw materials, ultimately minimizing pollution and carbon emissions. Our production lines have a system in place to recycle over 50% of waste into our saddles and grips, under a reasonable cost structure and without compromising on the quality we are proud of.

Simultaneously, we are focusing on bikes with diverse functionalities. Cargo bikes, for instance, are an excellent option with a low carbon footprint for individuals who need to transport goods and carry children. “Every step we take, from teambuilding to detailed communication, and thorough implementation, we work together toward a sustainable future by making cycling parts from cradle to grave, ” says Ann, VP of Velo. As we face the challenge of global climate change, we are all in this together. The Taiwanese bicycle industry has been successfully collaborating for some time now. At Velo, we understand that teamwork is essential to achieve our goals of sustainability. Making changes alone or within one company can be difficult, but if the entire industry can work together, it is possible to gain a significant voice in sustainability standards.

BAS IN TAIWAN AIMS TO REDUCE 40 KG OF CARBON EMISSIONS WITH EACH BICYCLE

In addition to the A-team, Taiwanese bicycle industry formed the Bicycle Alliance for Sustainability (BAS) to collaborate for a sustainable future. All members will inventory greenhouse gas emissions within 2 years, and reduce at least 3% annually. The ultimate goal is that each bicycle will reduce 40 Kg or 25% of carbon emissions by 2030. As a council member of the BAS, Ann explains that cycling is the greenest activity one can do because it does not emit any carbon at all. But how can we make the production process as green as cycling? Net-zero carbon emissions had been a global issue for years. As a member of the BAS, Velo will keep seeking professional consulting teams to improve the production process and reach the goals along with all BAS members.

Internationally, BAS organized a summit that brought together globally recognized companies such as TREK, SCOTT, SHIMANO, SRAM and others to share their visions and brainstorm innovative ideas for a sustainable future. For example, how can we collaborate with international members of the bicycle industry and fight for EU’s “bicycle carbon tariff” or “carbonreducing cycling passports” to encourage people to cycle by offering coupons with each ride?

Ann concludes that meaningful dialogue with BAS members at the summit was very fruitful. “I heard several innovative out-of-the-box ideas. Listening to the ESG-implemented projects of other companies, I learned from their experiences that gave me a better blueprint and save me time at Velo. For example, I learned to make colleagues feel proud to cut down carbon emissions is the key to raising consensus.” The global pandemic has had a significant impact on multiple industries, but it has also led to a resurgence of interest in cycling among many people. How far can one cycle? Much farther than one might think! In the Arctic Circle, there are people cycling and enjoying beautiful scenery which might not last long. The Arctic Circle is enduring the harsh impacts of climate change and global warming more severely than any other place in the world. Let us attentively listen to the voice of Mother Nature and learn from the Arctic Circle's tragic experience of climate change. Despite suffering from the harshest impacts of global warming, the region is still being exploited by humans. It is our responsibility to take action and show compassion towards Gaia, our planet. If we all work together towards sustainability, we can create a brighter future.

GROUNDING LOCALLY TO GO GLOBALLY THE NEW GENERAL MANAGER OF MERIDA, VASEN TSENG, THINKS BIG

When we visited Merida, it was the first day Vasen Tseng officially took the position as General Manager.

Despite the immense responsibilities that come with being a third-generation heir to an international corporation, Vasen appeared unfazed due to their extensive experience in production, manufacturing, and marketing. During the interview, rather than exhibiting the expected pressure, Vasen displayed great enthusiasm for Merida.

The highly sought-after 5000 entries for Merida 2023 Changhua Classic 100K were fully booked within

an hour. This event is an annual cycling race that takes place in Changhua County, Taiwan. The rate of ticket sales shows the popularity of this cycling competition is nothing less than a pop concert. “Many bike shop managers called and pleaded for more participants.” For the past 12 years, Vasen always met cyclist friends from way back when at the events and these gatherings felt like heartwarming annual reunions to him. The most popular categories, aside from the demanding Mt. Bagua ascent, are the races featuring professional cyclists and celebrities. Merida Changhua Classic 100K has been one of the most popular cycling competitions in Taiwan.

Ever since TBV Team sponsored by Merida won the Tour de France in 2021, second place in Benelux Tour, and first place at Santiago de Compostela, Merida brand has become internationally recognized. Despite achieving global success, Teng remains attentive to local events and developments in Taiwan. When its neighboring Dacun Middle School started a cycling team, Vasen sponsored all the road bikes immediately in hopes to cultivate local cycling talent. “As a marketing strategy, sponsorship is more than just quality control and financial support. Complimentary marketing strategies are equally vital. Seeing TBV Team put Merida in the international limelight, the publicity and visibility certainly worth all the previous effort,” said the experienced marketing veteran with a smile.

General Manager Vasen of Merida and Ann, VP of Velo are close in age. Other than talking shop, they both cycled vigorously at home and lost substantial weight during the pandemic. Ann was so impressed by Tseng, “He is as disciplined as a professional athlete in both training and dieting. An astounding 10kg weight loss in a month is simply dazzling!” Vasen explained that maintaining a daily exercise routine has made physical activity a habitual part of his life. Moreover, a new diet free of carbohydrates has significantly reduced his weight, making cycling much easier for him.

Recalling his most unforgettable cycling experience, Vasen shared his memories of the Twin Lighthouses trip, which covered a distance of 520km(325miles) in a single day and was live-streamed in 2021. Former Taipei City Councilor Froggy Chiu accompanied him on the journey. In just 24 hours, Vasen and Froggy Chiu cycled from the northernmost to the southernmost tip of Taiwan, where they were greeted by enthusiastic fans cheering them on. The experience was surreal for Vasen, and the direct and almost non-stop online marketing interaction with over 40,000 fans provided him with plenty of inspiration. The success of the Merida Twin Lighthouses Limited Edition was such that this event became a prime example of a win-win-win situation.

According to Vasen's plan, Merida will expand its product range beyond bicycle-related items and create a wider variety of products. “For example, if you like Ferrari, you will own many things with Ferrari’s logo, such as clothing, leather goods, cellphone cases, etc. Merida is looking forward to collaborating with Velo to develop branded saddles and other products. I want Merida to be a part of every consumer’s daily life!”

SRAM SCORES HIGH ON ESG WITH STRONG CORPORATE CULTURE

After working in SRAM Asia for over three decades, Bob Chen shares his expertise and realistic outlook on the global biking industry.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a bitter-sweet three years to the global bicycle industry. On one hand, this period brought about a universal surge of bike riding opportunities. On the other hand, the bike industry also encountered the challenges of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) Corporate Sustainable Development.

Ninety percent of SRAM’s products are made in Taiwan. Being accountable for such a huge responsibility, General Manager, Bob Chen, has to react to the customers and cultivate desirable corporate culture. Under his leadership, the plant cut down electricity expenditure and saved 7.56% of water. “The

silver lining of the drought in Taiwan two years ago made us ponder how to use water sparingly. In the past, we used a great amount of water to clean the parts in the production line. The severe water shortage nearly shut down the production line and forced us to use water more efficiently.” Dreading another water supply shortage, they hired a professional team to redesign the water system and will install a new water recycling system in the near future.

Bob Chen reveals that cultivating desired corporate culture is the underlying key for corporations to reach sustainable goals in ESG. “The professional team can make suggestions all they want, but the goals could not be reached if workers did not follow through with the new policies. We make every effort to explain why we want to implement these strategies to cut down resource expenditure.

We will also establish a sustaining empowering team to welcome any input and cut down even more energy consumption.”

For example, F. K. Day, the brother of one of the original founders of SRAM, founded World Bicycle Relief to distribute bikes and microloans to underprivileged families, and education funds to empower female students. SRAM Corporation matches employees’ donations to WBR after the 2005 Tsunami in Asia. “WBR is still helping underprivileged families and female students as of now. Many employees keep donating annually and they are very proud of their actions.” This sense of pride resulting from communal commitment is an essential part in building camaraderie.

Both SRAM and Velo focus on improving themselves in innovations and development and their collaboration inspired each other in all aspects. Bob Chen and Velo’s VP, Ann Chen, realized the most cherished memories they had were time spent with their colleagues.

“Having been working in the cycling industry, all 2000 employees took biking for granted and never thought of founding a bike club. Yet, we were inspired by Velo employees’ Tour Taiwan Cycling event and started our own bike club in 2020.” Bob remembered “We encountered a severe cold front since day one. It was not that bad heading south on the west coast in the dry cold at first. But when it started to pour, biking at a low temperature while wet gradually became unbearable. “It was excruciatingly painful riding in a downpour and none of us looked like we were enjoying it one bit. After taking hot showers and dinner, we all sat down to drink alcohol and ended up having a great long chat. It turned out to be such an accidental fantastic teambuilding experience!” Reminiscing that bitter-sweet trip, Bob Chen had a bright smile on his face.

Looking ahead, Bob Chen is optimistic about the biking industry. “In the long run, the pandemic made more people start to cycle. As long as we sell all the stocks and keep developing new designs, bikes are always in demand!”

MOLECULAR CUISINE CHEF OF THE FASHION WORLD, JUSTIN CHOU’S FANTASTIC SUSTAINABLE CROSS-INDUSTRY JOURNEY

It has been an accidental fantastic journey for Justin Chou to become a sustainable fashion pioneer.

As a senior studying for the university entrance exam in 1991, Justin’s favorite entertainment was to watch a trivia game show on Saturday nights. One day, he saw a clip about people on a farm in Texas shooting at the jeans hung on the cement walls to create pairs of “shotgun jeans” with individual unique patterns. Justin was so compelled and inspired that he punctured his jeans with a pick and went out with his friends to show off his new creation. Even though his friends’ moms looked really baffled, he was so proud of his work!

Since then, re-purposing secondhand clothing, or rather, re-designing vintage clothes to highlight their individualities became Justin’s passion. To Justin, all vintage clothing can be literally deconstructed into threads and transformed into new pieces.

“All secondhand clothes or old objects embody their own histories, even the wear and tear or holes in clothes tell different stories. I can tease out some threads of a cloth and put in different materials, or make it into something else, like a tissue case or a throw pillow. What’s important is to keep the stories alive and go through rebirth by upcycling the fabrics while the stories become cherished memories in new chapters.” Smiling, Justin says he is like a molecular cuisine chef of clothes who is fascinated by manipulating the molecules of food and reconstructing them into something different to subvert people’s perceptions of taste. Deconstructing various materials and elements to create another idiosyncratic work is how Justin roams in several fields skillfully and savors the joys.

The interdisciplinary boulevard in fashion design on which Justin treads started from the upcycled bridal gown of his wife. Since then, he collaborated

with different people by deconstructing different materials in different spaces to present one fabulous show after another.

Justin has worked on versatile projects from presidents to pets including President Tsai’s formal attire in the First Fashion Gala in Washington D.C. in 2022 and the Double Ten National Day. He has worked with RE. UNIQLO Recycle and Reuse program to upcycle old clothes into pet apparel. More recent projects include collaborations with artist Paul Chiang. Justin represents Chiang’s master

artworks with diverse fashion styles to embody the international artistic vogue of Taiwan.

Justin is not only a talented designer but also someone who pushes the boundaries and challenges his team to create innovative and sustainable fashion. The fact that he was the first Taiwanese designer to show in New York Fashion Week is a testament to his creativity and vision. Every new project brings new challenges to his team whenever he comes up with a new proposal. His better half, Dodobird Tung gasps and says, “We have to constantly brace ourselves and keep pushing ourselves to finish each and every impossible mission under a lot of pressure in a short time.”

Justin and his Just In XX team are constantly refining their craft and building on their previous successes. By deconstructing their previous works and using them as a foundation for new designs, they can continue to innovate and push the boundaries of sustainable fashion.

LESS PLANNING AND MORE MOMENTUM

Chasing the wind and sun on a touring bike and sleeping outdoors might sound easier than expected. Actually, it needs a nudge of momentum to go through a not-so-easy bicycle camping trip. “It often happens impulsively the night before. As a rule of thumb, I would never go if I planned a trip seriously.” Dean Chen once went with his impulse at 9pm and took the train next morning to the Taiwan northern most county, Keelung to ride his bicycle along the coast to Yilan.

As an impulsive traveler, Dean planned to go to the hot spring in Tai’an, Miaoli this time. However, he found out the desired campsite was full right before he left Dajia, Taichung. Even though he eventually booked another campsite at the last minute, getting to the new campsite required riding several sections of 18% uphill with 30kg of gear was utterly unexpected! “I knew it was hilly, but I never fathomed the intensity of the hills!” Dean said with a wry smile. Turned out his 15kg bicycle was not fit for these treacherous hills but more suitable for bike paths and paved roads.

Despite being an extremely busy C.E.O. of Willing Industry, Dean has the guts to leave his comfort zone and explore the great outdoors. Out of his busy schedule full of various outdoor activities such as windsurfing and SUP (stand up paddleboarding), he takes impulsive trips whenever he can to “enjoy time away from home without a fixed schedule”. On this 100km round trip to the hot spring, his companion had severe cramps while climbing a steep uphill. He resorted to calling the campsite for help and his friend ended up hitching a ride on the small farm tractor. Later that night, sipping wine and trying to wear off the cold breeze, they had such a cherished memory sitting by the warm mini portable fire pit at the campsite talking about the day.

Even if you are unable to complete a planned route, there can still be value in the experience. Dean remembers he once planned to ride the east coast from northernmost Cape Fugui at Keelung all the

way to the southernmost point, Kenting. Not only did he encounter a cold front, but the freezing rain on the first two days prompted him to take a train from Nanao, Yilan to Taitung. The fortuitous meeting with a group of cyclists and the subsequent enjoyable long chat turned the impromptu train ride into an accidental beautiful journey.

Snake bites and several overnights at the temples had never deterred Dean from planning more cycling camping trips. To him, the best way to vacation by bicycle is to take train rides and cycle within cities. In Europe, he often saw senior couples traveling by trains and cycling around their destinations. When asked if he would stop taking cycling trips when he gets old, Dean said that he would tour Taiwan by taking easier routes. Apparently, the extremely steep uphill that made him ride slower than walking did not dissuade his mind of steel the slightest bit.

BATTERY-FREE ELECTRICASSISTED BICYCLES

With the heightened awareness of global environmental issues, electric bicycles are in greater demand in Europe and North America. However, it is important to remember that electric bicycles still require electricity to operate and the electricity used to charge these batteries come from the power grid, which is often generated by non-renewable sources of energy.

Former professional cyclist Lin Mingzhang spent seven years inventing a battery-free, electric-assisted bicycle system that runs up to thirty kilometers after only twenty seconds of pedaling. Lin's story is an inspiring one of perseverance and adaptability. Despite a devastating injury that ended his BMX career, he found a new passion in researching the mechanics of bicycles and running his own bike shop. After just three months of physical therapy, he was able to regain mobility, which is a testament to his strength and determination. Over the years, Lin gained a deeper understanding of how to optimize bike performance and worked on developing new and innovative cycling technologies.

Although battery technology has advanced in recent years, electric-assisted bicycles are still limited in storing enough power for long-distance cycling and charging options are limited outside of the residence. Lin had a vision to create a batteryless electric-powered bike as a solution to this dilemma.

After multiple setbacks and injuries from doing work himself, he did not give up on his goal of soldering parts in different combinations. He sought the help of mechanics and continued to experiment until he found the right working combination. Instead of being discouraged by his accidents, he saw them as opportunities to learn and improve. He believed that the answers he was seeking were hidden behind those accidents and used them as stepping stones towards success.

The seven years of trials and errors that Lin endured were not easy. He had to spend countless hours contemplating through days of multiple failed attempts. Despite his friends' lack of faith in him, Lin persisted in his efforts, comparing his determination to that of cycling. He never gave up on his goal and his persistence paid off in the end.

Lin’s spirit of persistence and determination was his ticket to success. After countless hours and 6 million NT of investment, he ultimately achieved the goal of developing a battery-free electronic-assisted system. His innovative product is currently in the process of patent applications in several countries and will be on the market in 2023.

Lin Mingzhang explains that energy is stored by stretching and compressing two long springs coiled within the two metal disks. The system starts to store all the energy created after the cyclist pedals for only twenty seconds. A leisurely cycling speed of 10 km/hr would result in an output of about 25 km/hr with the stored energy. Additionally, all the dynamic energy is recycled by the springs and stored further into the system.

Since the recycled energy enables cyclists to climb uphill in one-tenth of the effort required by a regular bicycle, Lin says that anyone can go uphill singing effortlessly with the help of his invention. For leisurely riding, this option is definitely one to try!

Lin's story is an inspiration to all those who are struggling to achieve their goals. It reminds us that success often comes after many failures, and that determination and perseverance are essential qualities for achieving our dreams.

THE GAME CHANGER WITH BALANCED FIVE ELEMENTS, THE AYURVEDIC PLANT-BASED MEALS ARE FULL OF ENERGY

while ether is the space that encompasses all substantial and insubstantial matters. The combination of these five elements constitutes three inclinations of people: vata (air-prone), pitta (fireprone), and kapha (water-prone). Stanley says, “A body is not unlike a miniature universe. When the five elements are balanced, a person is then healthy in physical, mental and spiritual aspects.” Ayurvedic food therapy identifies six tastes in food: sweet, sour, salty, spicy, astringent, and bitter. Enen says that “As long as one has all six tastes in each meal, then the five elements are balanced.”

For a long time, there has been a stereotype that vegetarian diets cannot provide sufficient nutrition and that vegetarian athletes cannot perform well. However, Enen, who manages N. Plant-based Cuisine, and her partner Stanley from Singapore were inspired by the documentary "The Game Changers" in 2020 and decided to adopt a plantbased lifestyle. They relocated from the metropolis to the mountainous Caoling, Yunlin, where they studied and shared the ancient scientific wisdom of Indian Ayurveda with the general public through their popular social media channels, promoting the benefits of plant-based cuisine. In this article, they have created plant-based dishes tailored to the needs of professional cyclists, debunking the myth that plant-based diets are inadequate for athletic performance.

Ayurvedic food therapy is based on the five elements: ether, air, water, fire and earth. Fire represents the ability to digest and metabolize food, water refers to all the liquid in the body, earth is the constitutes of the body, air is the energy and gaseous matters that facilitate body movement,

Professional cyclists have unique body constitutions as they require both sprinting and endurance abilities, making them more susceptible to the "fire" element. They also have high metabolic rates due to their intense training, leading to increased appetite and good digestion. However, a diet high in condiments can cause inflammation and discomfort. To address these concerns, Enen and Stanley have developed Ayurvedic recipes containing highprotein foods like tofu and red lentils to nourish the cyclists' muscle tissues. They also incorporate herbs like turmeric to aid digestion, reduce inflammation and repair body tissues. Additionally, good fats like sesame and coconut oils are included to support metabolism, promote calcium absorption, and overall nourishment of the body.

PRACTICE YIJINJING TO STRENGTHEN MUSCLE GROUPS AND REDUCE INJURIES AND PAINS

Cycling is a great form of exercise but not all bike rides end well. During the Central Taiwan 100K Bicycle Race, a young man experienced lower back pain along with tightness and a stingy sensation on his lateral thigh. Despite the discomfort, he refused to give up and completed the race, but afterward, he hurried to Yipin Chinese Medical Clinic in Fengyuan for treatment. By the time he arrived, he could barely stand up straight and had to hunch over, supporting his lower back with his right hand on his hip as he slowly made his way into the exam room, writhing in agony.

After the director, Chang Yung-ming examined him carefully, the cyclist was diagnosed with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) and Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS). PEPS is a condition characterized by pain and discomfort around or behind the kneecap. It typically occurs during activities that involve bending of the knee. Iliotibial Band is a long, thick and tough longitudinal tendon along the lateral thigh connecting the lateral pelvis to the lateral knee joint and fibula. If a bicycle saddle is set too high, or the rider adopts a hunched position, or the rider pedals at a rapid cadence, the iliotibial bands may repeatedly rub against the bones, leading to inflammation and pain in the tendons.

Painful knees and thighs are a common complaint, and patients may fall into one of five categories based on the location of their discomfort: skin, meridian, flesh, tendon, or bone. Director Chang provides treatment options tailored to each patient's specific needs, such as collateral meridian or

immediate acupuncture, massage, heat pads, fire pots, or bloodletting, with the aim of reducing pain as much as possible.

For more than two decades, Director Chang has been practicing Yijinjing, a well-known Chinese exercise that promotes health. As an expert, he has personally experienced the benefits of these exercises in terms of strengthening muscle groups and preventing sports-related injuries. To help cyclists minimize their risk of injury, Director Chang recommends the following two exercises.

易筋經

Movement 7: Nine Ghosts Pull Out Sabres

Raise the right arm over your head and lay it behind the left ear and turn your head toward the left side while the left hand lays on the lower back. Breathe evenly, keep both legs straight and shoulder width apart. Repeat this movment on the other side. Imagine the lower hand is holding a sabre while the higher hand is pulling the sabre out of the sheath.

Benefits: This movement exercises the Bladder Meridian to ease the pains in the lower back and posterior thighs and stiff toes.

Movement 10: Crouching Tiger Pouncing on Prey

Squat down, lean forward and support yourself with all ten fingers on the ground. Next, straighten the right leg and lay it down with your toes on the ground. At the same time, lift up your head to look straight ahead and breathe evenly. Repeat on other side.

Benefits: This movement exercises the Sanjiao Meridian and the Gall Bladder Meridian. By stretching the lower back and vertebrae, the vertebrae will be more flexible. In addition, the hands and lateral thighs will be relaxed.

TO LOWER BACK PAIN WITH TREE HUGGING POSE AND ASIAN SQUAT

If prolonged bike rides give you lower back pain, it is a sign of a tilted pelvis. Corrective exercise specialists Steve Zhou is an expert with lots of helpful workouts. He explains “the biggest problem in cycling is that by default, cyclists ride with their pelvises tilted which further compromises their knees and feet.” Cyclists with tilted pelvises ride unevenly that they twist their lumbar to go straight. They over compensate by shifting their thoracic vertebrae to maintain balance which leads to painful lower backs.

The brain has to be involved before athletes remember movements clearly. Zhou gives specific directions to cyclists to correct their postures, this includes aligning your sit bones, tuck in your stomach, align your knees, exert 80% power on your left leg, relax your hands and put your weight on the saddle. Cyclists should practice aligning their pelvis on stationary bikes first. After cyclists align their sit bones, the pelvis becomes straight followed by the alignment of their knees. In the beginning, cyclists need to check visually if their knees are aligned. Eventually, their knees should be aligned at all times with the help of muscle memory.

As most people are right-handed and thusly right legs are the dominant legs, the non-dominant left legs have always been passive. It is natural for most cyclists to push harder with their right legs when they need to speed up or are exhausted. Hence, the right knee tends to push forward and the pelvis becomes tilted. Cyclists must remind themselves to exert more force on their left leg to balance their power output. In addition to reducing lower back pain, correct posture results in higher performance.

For those who suffer from lower back pain, the following two corrective exercises help to alleviate the pain caused by cycling.

Corrective Exercise Specialist: Steven Zhou

1. Tree hugging

Either sitting, standing or lying on the bed, raise and stretch out your arms forward, shoulder high with your palms open. Inhale deeply and imagine you are hugging a huge California redwood. With a long exhale, tuck in your abs. Relax your rib cage and waist. If the abdominal muscles are over-stretched, then the pelvis will tilt forward.

Zhou strongly suggests making this exercise your daily bedtime ritual for it will align your vertebrae and reduce the over-arching waist. Even if you toss and turn at night, the gap between your waist and the bed is not too big. Lay your body weight on the bed evenly with your waist as close to the bed as possible is the secret to avoiding a kink in the neck. Jokingly, Zhou concludes, “Befriend the earth! Only when you stop resisting the earth can you be really relaxed.”

2. Asian Squat (Taiwanese Squat)

Zhou explains “Do this exercise as lazy as possible is the key!” Stand with your feet shoulder width apart with your toes pointing forward and outward. Slowly lower yourself into a deep squatting position with your arms between your legs or on your knees. Relax your waist and shift your weight to the lower back. Exhale deeply and further relax your lumbar and lower back until your body weight is at your bottom.

Note: If you feel unbalanced squatting this way, try it next to something that you can hold on to. If your ankles feel tight, make them more comfortable by using padding underneath.

In 1790, Comte de Sivrac sat on a wooden horse equipped with two attached wheels and was only able to move forward, as there was no handle for steering. In 1817, Karl Drais added a handle to steer the machine. This new innovation allowed people to walk and glide to move the device, similar to how toddlers ride balance bikes today. Constructed entirely from wood, this peculiar, horseless vehicle was very heavy.

GLOBAL BICYCLE COOPERATIVES URGE ZERO BIKE WASTE

Over the last decade, a surge of global non-profit bike co-ops has emerged with the aim of achieving zero bike waste by offering free tutorials on repairs, along with providing parts and tools to cyclists. According to Earth's Community Bicycle Organizations, since the establishment of the first bike co-op in Vienna in 1983, there are now nearly 1,000 bike co-ops worldwide, with a concentration in Europe, North America, Australia, and select cities in South America. These co-ops work in collaboration with local bike shops instead of being adversaries, given their different clienteles. Additionally, bike co-ops often purchase consumable parts or acquire clearance items from bike shops. The ultimate objective of both bike stores is to promote eco-friendly transportation and contribute to a cleaner planet. Map of bike co-ops (Earth's Community Bicycle Organizations - Google My Maps)

EXPLORING THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT BY MOUNTAIN BIKE

After years of living in a van and exploring the American West, in December of 2021, my husband Macky and I bought a house in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Known as the Land of Enchantment (according to tourism boards) or the Land of Entrapment (according to jaded locals), New Mexico is undeniably a place of contrasts: deep poverty vs extraordinary wealth, dry desert landscape vs snowcapped mountains, and of course, green chile vs red chile on your smothered burrito (the correct answer is Christmas, aka both).

New Mexico is often overlooked as a mountain biking destination, perhaps overshadowed by its northerly and aggressively outdoorsy neighbor, Colorado. Today, I want to share a few of our favorite places to ride in the state, and why we decided to call it home.

has some of the most technical mountain trails in the state -- with sharp rocks, creative features (like this notch between two rock faces) and big drops and jumps that will challenge any rider. This is why several national level enduro races have been hosted here in the past. It’s a great place to go to progress your skills on the mountain bike. While the most technical trails are built on Glorieta Adventure Camps property, you can easily connect into Santa Fe National Forest, if a backcountry adventure is more your style. The ride up to Mt Baldy features 2500 feet of climbing over 6 miles, and from there you can connect into miles and miles of trail –enough to keep even the most endurance-oriented mountain biker busy for a few days.

Glorieta Adventure Camps is a summer camp located just 20 minutes outside of the state capitol of Santa Fe, and one of our favorite places to ride. The area

South Boundary Trail, designated an IMBA EPIC in 2017, is probably the best-known ride in New Mexico, and for good reason. It’s a 21-mile trail stretching from Angel Fire to Taos and while there are few ways to ride it as a loop, it is most often

shuttled. The trail has 4300 feet of descending, evenly split between rough, rocky technical sections and beautiful, flowing single track through groves of aspens. Aspen trees, with their signature white bark and slim, straight trunks, are unique among trees in that a grove of aspens is actually a single organism (in fact, the single largest living organism on earth is an aspen grove in Utah). Riding through a grove of aspens, in autumn, when each tree is a vibrant yellow, is one of the most special experiences a person can have on a mountain bike, and this is exactly what you get if you are so lucky as to ride South Boundary Trail in late September or early October. This section of South Boundary is called “Heaven on Earth,” and when the aspen leaves begin to fall, forming a golden patchwork on the ground, it earns its second nickname: The Yellow Brick Road.

we moved to Los Alamos is that there were so many sections of technical trail that we knew we would never get bored or run out of ways to progress our skills. We recently received a comment on YouTube from someone saying “why do trail builders build trails that 90% of people can’t make it up?” And while I don’t have an answer to that question, I’m glad they do, because it keeps the challenge alive.

One of our favorite trails in Los Alamos is Quemazon (Spanish for “the burn” – this area was badly burned in fires in 2000 and 2011 and you can still see the bulldozer tracks in the rock from where firefighters drove up the trail to fight the fire). The climb up Pipeline Road is rough and challenging but gives you some amazing views of the town and surrounding valleys. And then the descent is 10 minutes of rocky ledges and brain-jarring fun. It’s a trail that really teaches you to let off the brakes and find the flow.

We joke that there are no easy trails in Los Alamos, and while in reality there are actually a couple trails which might accurately be called “green,” they are few and far between. Many of the trails are old school single track, with janky rocks, awkward switchbacks and extremely technical climbs. One of the reasons

We feel very lucky to live in a place that consistently provides us with challenge on the bike – whether it be physical or technical – and where we can so easily access phenomenal outdoors experiences. It’s safe to say that the Land of Enchantment has, indeed, entrapped us.

UNDERSTANDING HOLY COW’S BODY LANGUAGE AND CYCLING IN INDIA

Whoever came up with the slogan “Incredible India” must be a genius who knows Indian culture intimately. Anything and everything is possible in India. When you encounter unfathomable things, you can only smile and lament “Incredible India!”

A friend once commented, “after you drive in India, you can drive anywhere in the world fine.” Traffic in India can be chaotic and overwhelming, especially for those who are not used to it. The lack of traffic lights and the large number of vehicles on the road can make driving in India an adventure. However, it is true that despite the chaos, accidents are relatively rare, and most people seem to be able to drive with the flow of traffic. In the midst of all this chaotic traffic, you will see cows roaming freely on the streets of India.

Cows are considered holy and highly respected in India. No matter who their owners are, their safety is the highest priority in India. Driving lessons include how to read their body language to anticipate their

movements and avoiding sudden actions or honking which can startle them. For example, certain movements of their heads or ears indicate a change of direction, and so on. Cows are protected by law in many parts of India and harming or killing one can lead to serious consequences and also considered bad luck.

India is expected to reach a population of 1.43 billion in 2023, which will make it the most populous country in the world, surpassing China. While this rapid rate of increase in population presents India with numerous opportunities, it also brings several challenges. The bicycle industry is an interesting example of how the intersection between a rising power country and the pandemic has created this current scenario.

The huge domestic demand prompted abundant bike factories in India for several decades. More recently, many foreign bicycle related companies started manufacturing parts in India and exported

them abroad. The pandemic shattered the stigma that cycling was only for the poor in India. As people looked for socially distanced and sustainable modes of transportation, cycling emerged as a popular and viable alternative. Just three years ago, more than 50% of bikes were used in the countryside as an important tool to transport people and goods. However, worldwide fear of transmission of COVID-19 in public transportation prompted more people to use bicycles as a main mode of transport and many fell in love with cycling.

Throughout India, cycling has become the best choice for commuters and delivery people. Bicycles are easier to maneuver in traffic, and they offer a more cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to cars and other motorized vehicles. Cycling is no longer just a mode of transportation in India but now a popular recreational activity. Many people enjoy cycling with family and friends to exercise, explore scenic routes, and enjoy the outdoors. According to the Indian Bicycle Industry Association, after the pandemic lockdown was lifted, there was a rise of 25% in sales of bikes than the previous year.

It's difficult to predict how long the cycling trend will last in India. One thing for sure is if you ever want to cycle in India, take a lesson to learn cows’ body language so that you can enjoy cycling in the streets where cows roam free.

ELECTRIC SCOOTERS JOIN

BICYCLES TO HELP THE FINNISH TO REACH NET ZERO CARBON EMISSION

Northern European Countries have been developing clean energy and trying to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide. The government of Finland has been promoting cycling as a means of transportation and exercise for the past thirty five years. The closely connected web of cycling routes all over Finland has always been a popular space for the Finnish to enjoy their leisure recreation. However, after the import of electric scooters in 2019, they soon became the new favorite means of transportation.

It is not uncommon to see shared bikes and shared scooters riding alongside one another on the streets of Helsinki. These shared bikes and shared scooters provide the Finnish with more alternatives in public transportation. The government imported electric scooters to Finland for their accessibility and manageability to offer an alternative mode of public transportation where no traditional services were available. With low carbon emissions, the electric

scooter made this new way of mobility an instant success. Among 5.5 million of the Finnish population, more than 2.5 million have utilized this mode of transportation. Recognizing its profitable potential, many international corporations have entered the Finnish e-scooter market. The Finnish government has been supportive of e-scooter initiatives, which has helped to create a favorable environment for these companies to operate in.

Even though e-scooters are compact and convenient, there has been a steady increase in accidents and injuries caused by the scooters’ high speeds. Furthermore, some cyclists have complained about sharing the cycle routes with the e-scooters. People living in Oulu, the major city that is closest to the Arctics in Finland are still loyal cyclists through and through, even in the coldest sub-zero snowy winter days.

51 COLUMN

Being an important cultural and economic city in northern Finland, Oulu’s relatively small premise makes it possible for its residents to drive across town in 15 minutes. However, as the important development center for Nokia Networks, Oulu has been the leading high-tech developing metropolis in Finland. People of Oulu attribute their creativity to their easy and peaceful lives largely thanks to their daily cycling routines. Having the highest density of bike paths all of Finland well attested to how people in Oulu truly love to cycle. Barely 200km (100 miles) away from the Arctic circle, Oulu snows six months out of the year on average. But the freezing snow never deters the people of Oulu from having fun cycling in the white landscape that becomes the city’s unique flavor.

Petri who lives in Oulu points to the bike paths everywhere and comments, “These are truly our highways!” Here, cycling is the mainstream and all other vehicles need to yield to bicycles. Residents enjoy the city as well as the great outdoors in the spring and summer. When it starts snowing, the

government will make sure the snow is shoveled away before the morning rush hour so cyclists can safely arrive at their offices on time.

Since the weather in Oulu stays low enough the entire winter, the dry snow seldom melts away. As long as the snowplows shovel away the thick layer of snow, the layer of hard-packed dry snow on top of the road is safe to cycle. Compared to other cities in the winter when it snows, the temperatures may not be consistently low enough to keep the snow from melting, and this can result in slushy, watery mixtures that can be hazardous for cyclists.

People of Oulu cycle to schools and work as an exercise routine year-round, including snowy winter days. They feel a much deeper connection with nature when they cycle in snow-covered shiny white and tranquil environment. In addition, bike rides in winter clear their minds and make them better thinkers. Benefits like these make Oulu one of the best cities to cycle in the winter!

THE ULTIMATE WAY TO EXPLORE ARCTIC SCENERY IN SUMMER IS BY BIKE!

GIVING A CHANCE , WOULD YOU PREFER HIKING OR BIKING?

Meet Jack , an architect living in Oslo who loves adventures in nature but isn't particularly patient. He wants to be able to travel at his own pace and take in all the beautiful sights, which is why he has made bicycles his preferred mode of travel. With a bike, he can move at his own speed and take breaks whenever he wants, without missing out on any of the stunning scenery. Whether he's exploring the roads and trails of Norway or venturing further afield, Jack knows that a bicycle is the perfect tool for his nature-filled adventures.

In Norway, everyone has the right to roam freely, thanks to a principle called "Allemannsretten," which means "everyone's right." As long as you respect

nature, you can explore any open land and camp wherever you'd like. With this belief in mind, Jack and his friends planned a three-week cycling trip to the polar circle, hoping to leave their youthful courage at the end of the world. It's a journey that combines the freedom of the open road with the majesty of the natural world.

They rode all the way from Lofoten to Tromsø. This route takes you along the northernmost road in the world, on the westernmost part of the European continent. It's a place that feels like a fairyland and a legend, with breathtaking fjords and towering mountains formed by tectonic movement. Roadways, bridges, and subsea tunnels connect the islands, making it possible to fully appreciate the stunning scenery along the way.

The Arctic Circle is an area located above 66 degrees latitude. Within Norway, the territory within the polar circle is about 96,225 km2, which is about 2.5 times larger than Taiwan. However, the population in this region is only about 500,000 people.

One interesting phenomenon in the Arctic Circle is the eternal daylight during the summer months, also known as the midnight sun. This is a great advantage for those who enjoy traveling by bicycle, as you can ride for longer periods of time without the need for artificial light. If you're planning a cycling trip to the Arctic Circle, be sure to experience this unique aspect of the region.

You'll be glad to know that the mosquitoes there are both giant and slow-moving. They often have trouble finding a good vein to bite, which means you'll have fewer interruptions while cycling. Plus, with the blessing of the midnight sun, you can easily complete a 60-kilometer bike ride each day.

When you're feeling tired, you can always stop to camp along the coast. Catch some cod for dinner, jump into the Arctic sea for a refreshing bath, and build a bonfire to dry your clothes. As you lay on the beach, looking out at the spectacular Atlantic Ocean, you can chat with your friends about which fjord was the most beautiful treasure of the day. The North Pole is truly a magical place for a cycling adventure.

Northern Norway is known for its rich terrain and diverse landforms. The roads often take you through cliffs and along the sea, with significant altitude changes over short distances. One moment you might be high up on a mountain, overlooking an entire village, and the next moment you could be at sea level, greeting a dancing whale. The cycling experience in this region can be physically

demanding, but the breathtaking views make it all worth it. Despite any muscle pains, you'll be left with a heart full of wonder and amazement.

The Arctic Race of Norway is a professional cycling event held every August in the highest latitudes. It's a four-day race, divided into four stages, with a total length of about 800 kilometers. As a part of the UCI European Tour, the race attracts top-level racers from around the world.

The stunning scenery along the route makes the Arctic Race of Norway a highly anticipated challenge for professional cyclists. This year, the race is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and the route will extend from the Sami town of Kautokeino to the North Cape, the northernmost point of the European road. If you're a fan of cycling, you won't want to miss this exciting event.

The annual cycling race in Northern Norway has become the most important sporting event in the region, attracting over 50,000 spectators each year. The event has a significant economic impact, bringing in more than 50 million Norwegian kroner. It's a great example of cooperation between society and the government, and it has a far-reaching impact on local businesses and tourism.

In addition, the event has brought the community together and inspired many spectators to start cycling more frequently. Summer is the best time of year to cycle inside the polar circle, thanks to the midnight sun and cool temperatures. If you're looking for a unique way to experience the beautiful polar circle scenery, cycling might be the perfect activity for you. ME TIME

With the arrival of the post-pandemic era, there are now ample opportunities for innovation and positive changes to enhance our lives. Are you prepared to embrace a dynamic and diverse personal experience? Taking time for oneself offers numerous opportunities for deep introspection and self-reflection.

The adjustments we made during the pandemic, such as remote work, virtual learning, and online meetings, caused us to experience information overload and mental exhaustion. Besides dealing with the stress of fake news and anxiety, the constant need to monitor our electronic devices created a significant source of pressure. While technology has made communication and interaction more convenient, it also resulted in us being available almost constantly, causing us to be on high alert during most of our waking hours.

During lockdown or quarantine, when we found ourselves with unexpected moments of solitude, did you engage in introspection and self-reflection? Did you ponder the needs of your body, mind, and spirit? With the pandemic isolating us from complicated interpersonal relationships, we became more aware of ourselves and start seeking balance in life, pursuing harmony in mind, body, and spirit, and cherishing precious moments of solitude. As we honestly confronted our emotions, we realized that we have been bombarded by overwhelming external stimuli, prioritizing the needs of others, and neglecting our own genuine perceptions.

This year, Velo invites you to join us in focusing on selfcare and engaging in relaxing and expressive activities. Taking time to rest our minds and spirits and engaging in physical exercise can be incredibly beneficial for our overall well-being. Our goal is to promote the importance of self-care and encourage more people to pursue recreational activities allowing them to cherish and enjoy more “Me Time.”

Me time We interviewed several cyclists to explore how they balance their work and family responsibilities, unwind their minds through cycling and relish moments of solitude. Join us as we delve into these stories, reflect on the intricacies of being alone, and create our own moments of joy and fulfillment during our “Me Time.”

I Love Cycling Which Brings Me Joy Anytime

Riding with great agility in the alleys, P. E. junior Huang Yi-tsai shared his passion for cycling with a bright smile. “All I can think of is where am I going to ride today and searching for new cycling routes.” In addition to cycling for training purposes and pushing his limits, he also enjoys just riding with friends and exploring.

After cycling in the countryside on a borrowed bike during 9th grade, he became enamored with the activity. This led him to acquire a second-hand bike from his mother's colleague and join cycling teams, ultimately leading to him participating in competitions. “All I want to do is to cycle faster and faster. If I want to be even faster, I needed to learn from others.”

While listening to music through his earphones, he repeatedly practices climbing and descending to perfect his speed and intensity. Whole-hearted training is his “Me Time” and cycling changed his life. “I used to push for speed. Now when I drop out of the group, I can relax and enjoy the scenery.” One of the toughest part of his training routes is the Wuling Pass (3275 m/10750 ft), where he has to push through the very challenging ascent to the top. However, he has since learned to relax and appreciate the breathtaking scenery that he previously overlooked.

Huang's relentless pursuit of pushing his limits has resulted in tremendous pressure on his training routine. He confesses “Abusive over-training is depressing because when I feel exhausted in the middle of a long-distance training day, I can’t stop and be fully rest there.” However, when he finishes the journey with grit, he is already planning his next route. Through cycling, he has had the opportunity to meet people of all ages and professions. With his deep passion for the sport, he aspires to discover his life's path while cycling.

Being Alone Made Me Realize My Own Power

“I used to bike to school” might sound ordinary, but it was actually a 150 km 8-hour ride from Taichung to Taoyuan! Without any formal training, Wu Yihua was determined to ride his bike to his university after the summer of his sophomore year and winter vacations. He accomplished this feat and rode along the breathtaking Provincial Highway 3, making unforgettable memories along the way.

As a former influencer in bike cyber marketing, he gets excited when discussing his experiences with cycling. Cycling is the perfect activity for him because he has complete control over the time, location, and number of participants. Furthermore, cycling does not require a fixed venue, and he can appreciate the stunning scenery while staying active. “Maybe this is why we called bicycles “ free vehicles” in Taiwan,” he ponders.

Wu has met a lot of great friends by training with the team. Nonetheless, his preference has been riding solo. “It certainly is great to join cycling teams. But if you want to train for cycling, then solo riding is better because all elements like time, intensity, locations, and routes can be tailored to individual

needs.” The introspective process that challenges physical limitations is the “Me Time” that he enjoys the most.

Wu’s favorite time to ride is at the crack of dawn before everyone is up. When asked about his preferred route, Wu stated, "I cherish all of the solo cycling sessions, the cooldown periods post-training, and the chance to ride and converse with friends equally. The most crucial factor is your mental state. All of these delightful experiences allow your heart to appreciate the incredible scenery along the way."

“ We Want to Build Our Own Roads ”

“All of my free time was dedicated to searching for new ideas for our cycling team." Team leader Chiu Siou Sian, has a deep passion for cycling which was evident from his creation of various competitions such as the "CYTO online competition" held during the pandemic, the Wednesday flash competition and the annual Da'an competition.

Initially, Chiu Siou Sian began riding single-speed bicycles purely for enjoyment. Five years ago, his passion for cycling led him to establish his team CYTO, competing in various road races in Taiwan. He designed their team logo, created sponsorship proposals and successfully secured support from companies for various events and competitions. The team even has their own theme songs composed by NCCU Afro Music! Chiu confidently expresses that “We are pioneers since no other amateur team in Taiwan has ever done any of this!”

Drawing from his past experience of managing the basketball team at his university, Chiu Siou Sian strongly believes that a wellorganized team can always improve, and young team members can gain valuable management skills through their involvement in cycling. To achieve greater success and set more records, the team must choose “an exceptional road” right from the beginning.

While juggling his work and team management responsibilities, Chiu Siou Sian regards his time on the bike as his personal "Me Time" where he can fully focus on cycling without any distraction. His most unforgettable trip was the "three-day around Taiwan" adventure in 2018. He covered a distance of 960 km in just three days, cycling from Taichung to Chishang on the first day, continuing all the way to Jiaoxi on the second day, and then returning back to Taichung on the third day. Despite the overwhelming and intense nature of the trip, he found it incredibly relaxing and could fully experience the pure joy of cycling.

At the beginning, Johnnie felt it was practically mission impossible to work from home and take care of kids during the pandemic. After some time however she adjusted well to this new lifestyle and even found time to bake delicious desserts and support her children's aspirations of becoming YouTubers. Johnnie says she will always cherish the time she spent with her kids, “Even though it was tough finding time to make it work, my kids and I are much closer now.”

Johnnie turned the daily two hour commute time into her introspective exercising “Me Time” before work. “I always exercised when I was feeling down since I knew I would feel better afterward.” The endorphins released after exercising helped her to change her mood quickly. “Finishing the daily target made me feel like a useful person.”

Having accomplished the impressive feat of completing the Boston Marathon, Johnnie decided to switch up her routine and took up road cycling. Due to her competitive nature and desire to not hold her team back, she began training.

“It’s either do it well or not at all for me. Even I am afraid of myself when I take things seriously!”

Johnnie quickly discovered cycling required a bit of a learning curve. Riding entails managing a machine and that is vastly different from managing one’s own body when running. This process was frustrating in the beginning when she started cycling but with focus and persistence, she was able to find the joys in this activity. As Johnnie grew more familiar with her bike, she formed a close bond with it and even gave it a name - Arctic Wolf or Wolfie, who became more of a partner than just an object. She eventually reached her goal by winning the “Loving 197 Road Bike Race.”

Despite the tediousness of constant training, Johnnie always set extravagant goals for herself, which at times made her dislike cycling. However, whenever she achieved a breakthrough, she would immediately turn to her friends and ask, "Where are we cycling next?"

MORE ME TIME IDEAS

Since everyone has unique personalities and experiences, the specifics of "me time" should also be tailored accordingly. To encourage individuals to prioritize their own perceptions, Velo will provide a range of events and lectures that will help them focus on themselves, comprehend their natural tendencies, appreciate the subtleties of their emotions, showcase their unique styles, and create meaningful "me time" experiences.

Velo Club members are welcome to participate in a variety of events, such as spiritual lectures, yoga sessions, and gourmet food tastings, which offer opportunities to explore a broader range of lifestyles beyond cycling. By engaging in activities that are filled with vitality and energy, you can engage in inner dialogues, activate your personal spirituality, and reach a state of comfort and peace. During these events, your preferred Velo saddle will accompany you as you enjoy your "me time." These programs will guide you to listen to your inner voice and help you develop a unique and exquisite embodiment of higher, more abundant, and beautiful energy, allowing you to connect with your authentic self.

“Internal Journaling” Spiritual Lectures: The concept of writing as a form of self-healing describes how journaling can be beneficial for our well-being. Expert instructors will guide us in learning how to actively listen to ourselves and soothe our minds when we are alone. By setting aside time for ourselves, we can recharge our energy and face the demands of our busy daily lives with renewed vigor.

Riding with Key Opinion Leaders (KOL): Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) will share their favorite cycling routes and scenic spots with you. Immerse yourself in the cadence of your body as you inhale and exhale, contract and release your muscles. Take pleasure in the rhythm of your breathing, the beat of your heart, and the tonality of your muscles as you cycle.

Here and Now Yoga:

To fully release muscle tension in each yoga posture and mindfully observe the flow of breath in every tranquil pose is how we stretch and unwind our bodies and minds. With each adjustment we make to our bodies and breath, we become more attuned to our physical sensations. By concentrating on each movement and breath, yoga can help regulate our emotions and improve our overall health.
