Have you ever imagined what bicycles will look like in the year Y3K (the year 3000)?
Maybe, just like in Spielberg’s classic movie E.T., bikes won’t just carry adorable aliens home but will also be futuristic flying machines soaring across galaxies, becoming the trendiest transportation of the future!
Think about it—when the Y3K era arrives, bikes won’t just be limited to roads; they’ll be AI-powered, self-driving, and smart riding machines that redefine mobility. Our cycling world is about to be flipped upside down!
As artificial intelligence (AI) advances at an unprecedented pace, the world has shifted beyond Y2K nostalgia and into Y3K—a future driven by technology. The fashion industry was the first to embrace this movement, with cool-toned metallic fabrics, bold accessories, and cutting-edge digital designs setting the tone. Visual arts, industrial design, and entertainment quickly followed, merging virtual and physical realities to create a completely new futuristic aesthetic. But this revolution isn’t just happening in digital spaces—the cycling industry is undergoing its own radical transformation. "Honestly, no one knows exactly what Y3K will look like— that's what makes it so exciting!" said VELO’s CEO, Ann Chen. As the global leader in innovative bike saddles, VELO has been tracking industry trends closely. “In the past, we could roughly predict where things were headed. But now? Every day brings a new breakthrough! Just look at AI—ChatGPT, Deep Seek, Grok3... these innovations are advancing so fast that even tech giants can’t keep up. The same goes for cycling. What seems impossible today could be standard in the future.” There’s no fixed trend to follow, no preset model to adhere to—just boundless opportunities to dream and innovate.
Cross-industry collaboration is also not a futuristic concept—it’s already happening. At major global auto shows, this trend is gaining momentum. Automotive giants like Mercedes-Benz and BMW have entered the bicycle market, driven by carbon emission regulations that compel them to find new avenues for sustainability.
These major players are bringing in huge investments and cutting-edge technology, which is intensifying competition. Even DJI, the drone powerhouse, has ventured into the e-bike market. Yet, let’s not forget, we traditional cycling brands have decades of expertise and craftsmanship under our belts!
Pedaling into the Future: The Electrification Wave of 2035
By 2035, Europe will be fully electrified, and that’s not just a big deal for the car industry—it’s going to shake up the cycling industry too. With stricter carbon reduction policies in Europe, more people are choosing electric bikes (E-Bikes) for short-distance travel. In eco-conscious regions, E-Bikes are no longer a luxury—they’re a necessity. VELO’s Ann Chen shares her insights: “Through multiple reports and market analyses, we’ve observed that electric vehicles are becoming the norm for sustainability in Europe. Among them, electric cargo bikes (e-cargo bikes) are gaining massive popularity. Parents aren’t just biking their kids to school; they’re doing it with electric cargo bikes that are basically mini Teslas. People are ditching cars because two wheels are all they need—plus, it’s great for staying fit!”
Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, things look a little different. In the U.S., speed and power are king. That’s why their E-Bikes are turning into ‘AutoBikes’—basically, motorcycles disguised as bicycles. They go fast, they’re powerful, and you don’t even have to pedal. This divergence is shaping a new global market—Europe leans toward eco-friendly, pedal-assisted bikes, while the U.S. prefers high-powered electric rides.
As we dream of the future, reducing resource waste has become an urgent priority. AI’s rapid evolution is pushing us to rethink our products—not just for comfort but also for enhanced safety and functionality. Could future bike saddles be equipped with smart sensors for safety alerts and environmental awareness?

SRAM:
A Powerful Collaboration for Circular Economy
Riding the waves of change, sustainability and circular economy have become essential in the future of cycling. Material innovation and recycling are no longer optional—it’s the next big frontier. The European Union now requires all imported batteries to have a recycling mechanism, signaling where the entire bicycle industry is headed.
With the rising demand for eco-friendly solutions, VELO has teamed up with global bicycle component giant SRAM in a groundbreaking collaboration. The goal is to transform production waste into high-performance bike saddles and redefine sustainability in closing the production loop.
Closing the Loop: Keeping Carbon Fiber Waste at High Value
VELO simplifies the circular economy into two key dimensions: Internal and External. Internally, VELO focuses on Recycling, Reusing, Reducing waste, and Redesigning products with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles at the core. Externally, VELO has partnered with SRAM to expand sustainable efforts beyond its own production line. SRAM, a world-renowned supplier of high-performance bicycle components that also owns the brand ZIPP, specializes in producing lightweight carbon components
including wheelsets, handlebars, stems and seatposts. Carbon fiber components have gained significant popularity in the bicycle industry due to its lightweight properties and performance benefits. However, the waste and losses generated during the manufacturing of carbon fiber products can pose challenges for recycling. Even with SRAM’s advanced carbon fiber recycling system, a major question remains: How can these materials retain their original value?
That’s where SRAM and VELO’s partnership makes a breakthrough. By combining recycled carbon fiber with nylon, VELO has developed a new high-performance saddle material. This innovative process retains the value of carbon fiber waste rather than downgrading it. With VELO’s and SRAM’s factories located just 20 km apart, supply chain emissions and costs are significantly reduced.
VELO’s laboratory tests have validated the strength and performance of this new material in premium saddles. Each saddle made from SRAM’s recycled carbon fiber reduces carbon emissions by 380 to 785 grams only the recycled fibers.
VELO is also actively working with other partners to introduce eco-friendly materials, such as ocean plastics and biodegradable materials for bicycle accessories. This is just the beginning. In the future, Velo aims to explore even more possibilities for substitute materials— not just SRAM’s waste, but also others that can be given a second life. This is a journey Velo must do toward a greener future.
AI Saddle Revolution: The Smart Cycling Experience for Your Ride
As the global cycling industry undergoes a major transformation, VELO is taking the lead in integrating AI technology into saddle development—bringing a new era of personalized, human-centered, and smart saddle innovation that challenges traditional design process. For decades, bicycle saddle designs have relied on ergonomic studies and feedback from professional riders. While valuable, this approach remains subjective and fails to fully accommodate the diverse needs of all cyclists. That’s why VELO has started leveraging AI-driven data analysis, simulating various riding postures and pressure distributions with precision.
AI technology is not only revolutionizing saddle design and production but also enhancing rider safety. VELO has already developed an AI-powered saddle warning system that includes:
• Rear-facing cameras installed on the saddle to automatically detect approaching vehicles
•Vibration alerts on the handlebars when a vehicle gets too close
• Red warning lights on the saddle to signal potential danger to the cyclist and surrounding pedestrians
•App integration allowing riders to control and customize warning settings via their smartphones
This intelligent safety system enhances cycling safety by providing real-time alerts, helping riders stay more aware of their surroundings.
In the future, AI must be able to determine the optimal pressure distribution for various riding styles—whether it’s road cycling, mountain biking, or urban commuting— to design saddles with superior support and comfort.
Using a smart app, cyclists will be able to monitor real-time pressure distribution and allow AI to automatically adjust saddle firmness for optimal support.
VELO’s CEO, Ann Chen, envisions the next level of AI-powered comfort:
“Imagine you're on a long-distance ride—AI detects your fatigue and dynamically adjusts the saddle’s support to keep you comfortable. Just think about how exciting that would be—making rides more comfortable, healthier, and smarter!”
This AI revolution is just beginning, and it’s already reshaping every aspect of our lives—including how we ride.
Relentless Innovation: The Real Risk Is Standing Still
VELO’s CEO, Ann Chen, makes a powerful statement: "As we move toward Y3K, the greatest risk isn’t technology advancing too fast—it’s us staying stuck in the past. Stagnation is the real danger. Every day, we push forward, constantly thinking about how to make our supply chain greener and more innovative. Because if we stop moving, we might just get left behind. That’s the new competitive landscape—keep experimenting, keep evolving, until we find the most suitable path forward." So, what will the bicycle industry look like in the future? Will bikes actually fly?
"Who knows? By the time Y3K rolls around, we might really have floating bicycles—or we might not need bikes at all—because we’ll be teleporting everywhere!” Chen jokes. The secret to VELO’s success lies in its ability to adapt, innovate, and embrace new technologies. The future may be unpredictable, but one thing is certain— VELO and Ann Chen are more than ready to take on whatever challenges come next.

Bike routes shape more than just rides—they influence the future of our cities and environment.
The Sandiaoling Eco-Friendly Tunnel: Redefining Bike Paths with History, Ecology, and Human-Centered Transportation
三貂嶺生態友善隧道 挑戰傳統的自行車道 兼顧歷史、生態與人本交通
The serene and understated village of Sandiaoling has recently risen to fame as a tourism hotspot, thanks to a unique bike path that has garnered the prestigious Grand Prix AFEX 2023 Award from France. Dubbed the "Dark Line of Time," this bike path strikes a rare balance between tourism, ecological preservation, and public infrastructure, serving as an exemplary case of sustainable public works.
The story begins in 1922, during the Japanese colonial era, when the original Sandiaoling Tunnel was carved into the mountains to facilitate mining transport. After World War II, the tunnel became part of the Taiwan Railways Yilan Line. However, due to its narrow, single-track width, the tunnel was retired when the railway was rerouted, and it was sealed off in 1985. Nearly 40 years later, the tunnel was reopened with a new purpose: revitalized by the New Taipei City Government as a bike path. The initial plan aimed to reinforce the tunnel,
expand its width, and repurpose it for both cycling and vehicular traffic—all in line with the principles of "Human-Centered Transportation."
Landscape architect Wu Zhong-Xun reflects on the project's design philosophy: "If we had followed conventional practices—widening the tunnel, repaving it, and reinforcing its structure—we would have erased its rich historical traces and unique ecological features. The result would have been just another clean, artificial path, indistinguishable from the countless similar roads across Taiwan. Wouldn't that be boring after just a few kilometers?"
Navigating the tension between sustainability and traditional engineering practices, Wu and his team sought a harmonious balance. The key, he explains, was adopting a design approach that respected the environment, preserved historical elements, and considered the survival of other species inhabiting the tunnel.
nstead of removing the tunnel's historical and ecological layers, the team chose to preserve them. Evidence of its mining-era reinforcements, the soot marks from trains, and the ecological transformations of 40 years of abandonment—such as dripping water, underground streams, and resident bats—were all treated as essential features of its identity. Rejecting the conventional "safety-first, reinforce-everything" mindset, the team employed monitoring systems to evaluate risks and used advanced technologies for targeted interventions, ensuring both safety and preservation.
As a result, the revitalized Sandiaoling Tunnel, along with the Sanguaizi Tunnel and their connecting outdoor sections, was reborn as a bike path spanning over 3 kilometers. Located between Mudan and Sandiaoling in New Taipei City, this project is now celebrated as the "Sandiaoling Bike Path," or more poetically, the "Dark Line of Time."
Harmonizing the Past and Future: Sandiaoling's Unique "Dark Line"
Architect Wu Zhong-Xun shares inspiration from a book he read titled Outside Light is Magic. The book encourages readers to slow down and explore their everyday surroundings through walking or cycling. By cultivating a sharp sense of observation, one can see the world from fresh perspectives. This practice not only sparks creativity but also leads to unexpected discoveries, enriching personal experiences.
The Sandiaoling Eco-Friendly Tunnel aims to evoke this same spirit—encouraging people to "slow down" through walking or cycling, to truly appreciate their environment. This deliberate intention is ingeniously reflected in the grated pavement design. The path consists of 500,000 steel bars laid out with gaps that allow users to glimpse the native ground below. As you move along the trail, you can feel and observe shifts in texture—sand, water,
ERUTUF OF R W A R D FUTURE FORW
stone—all revealing the diverse landscapes beneath your feet. Each segment of the journey showcases its own unique charm. Additionally, the choice of a single material for the path design was a deliberate attempt to make the design "as plain as possible," avoiding excessive variation or visual distractions. This simplicity encourages users to focus on the subtle changes in their surroundings rather than the design itself.
Wu emphasizes that modern life's fast pace has dulled people's sensitivity to their environment. In the past, Taiwan's bike paths were often designed with a heavy focus on infrastructure and tourism appeal, neglecting the inherent value of the environment. Looking forward, the landscape design of bike paths should prioritize sustainability, public access to the land, and fostering connections between people and their surroundings. Contemporary designers bear the responsibility not just to reshape spaces but to create mediums that enable people to respect and interact with the environment meaningfully.
The Sandiaoling Bike Path represents more than just transportation infrastructure—it's a testament to environmental awareness, historical respect, and human-centered care. For the designers, the challenge extended beyond technical aspects to questioning and rethinking traditional approaches. The true significance of the Sandiaoling Bike Path lies not only in providing a distinctive spatial experience but also in inspiring people to respect and care for the environment. Ultimately, it invites us to reflect on humanity's role and responsibility within the natural world.

When people think of Mark Cavendish, they immediately recall his incredible achievements on the cycling stage, especially his 35 stage wins in the Tour de France. Known as the "Manx Missile," this record solidifies his position as one of the greatest sprinters in history. Yet, it is his unyielding spirit and the profound impact he has had on cycling that surpass the significance of those 35 victories.
This was Mark's first visit to Taiwan—a short yet packed trip. During the interview, he fondly recalled his first experience of spicy hot pot the previous evening, smiling as he said, “Everyone has been so friendly. I think it’s an island. I’m from an island. It’s a lot smaller than Taiwan. There’s something that’s warm and welcoming about people from an island. You certainly feel that here.”
Invited by Velo’s CEO, Ann Chen, Mark visited Velo’s
Photography/ Chang Jing Word/ Tingyu Chen
headquarters in Dajia, Taichung City, where he was impressed by the seamless integration of automation and handcrafted artistry in Velo’s saddle production line.
“It’s almost like a workshop to a factory. It feels really boutique… very refined.” he said. “This attention to detail and dedication matches the intricate nature of bicycles themselves.”
Ann Chen shared her emotions while watching Mark secure his 35th Tour de France stage win in July 2024: “I was trembling, almost holding my breath, afraid of missing that historic moment as Mark sprinted toward the finish line. When he crossed it, I was overwhelmed— first by excitement and then by a deep sense of inspiration.”
Mark’s triumphant career has not been without its challenges. From battling depression and Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)—which caused fatigue, fever, and rashes—to breaking his collarbone in a crash during his peak in 2023, Mark has faced more setbacks than most would endure. Yet, he repeatedly rose from the depths to achieve victory, culminating in his historic 35th stage win.
A Heart That Won’t Be Beaten: Rising from Adversity
Mark candidly reflected on one of his toughest challenges: dealing with external doubts. “I’ve won 130 races, and the hardest thing for me the last few years was having people understand that. Having to explain to an old bike rider that won two races why I think I can win another
bike race,” he said. “It’s not lack of motivation, it actually gives you anger that makes you more motivated.”
Mark emphasized the significance of perseverance.
“There’s always a finish line. Make sure you always finish where you start. That’s important,” he said. “Even if you’re last, it’s better than quitting halfway. Because if you finish, you give yourself the chance to create something special the next day.”
For Mark, no moment is insignificant. “I don’t think there’s a most memorable time. Every moment means something,” he shared. Yet, what moves him most is hearing people say they started cycling because of him. “The nicest thing people say is when they say, ‘Oh, I got into cycling because of you. I had a picture you on my wall.’ That’s special.” Mark shared that the joy of cycling is an irreplaceable source of beauty and motivation in his life. Whether riding alone during challenging times or enjoying a bike ride with his children, he hopes to pass down his love for cycling to the next generation. “There’s always a finish line. Make sure you always finish where you start. That’s important,” he said. “Even if the result isn’t what you expected, the process of completing it is something to be proud of.”
When asked, “If you could live your life over again, what would you want to change?” Mark paused thoughtfully. “That’s a hard question. It’s a good question too. Would you want to be a cyclist again? Is that what you mean? Of course, there will always be things you wish to change… but I don’t think for the consequences I’d change anything.”
He elaborated, “Ultimately, I’m a firm believer that you make your choice, you deal with the consequences. But it’s only from really, I guess, negative consequences that you really learn the most.” While he wouldn’t alter his past choices, he admitted he might handle situations differently with the wisdom he has now.
The Future of Y3K Cycling: A Fusion of Technology and Soul
Mark, who retired with 35 Tour de France wins and a career total of 165 victories, has left an indelible mark on the history of cycling. His retirement signals the end of an era, raising questions about the sport’s future. Discussing the potential of cycling in the year 3000, Mark envisioned the role of artificial intelligence and innovation in enhancing performance: “In the future, there’ll be a way of saddle, it forms on you and it’s malleable as you ride… You almost become part of it, if that makes sense. It’s manipulated by you with every movement. It will change while you change.”
However, he stressed that the core value of cycling will always remain. “What makes a bicycle a bicycle is its
human form, its connection of a human to a machine. And fundamentally that should and will not ever change.”
For Mark Cavendish, cycling is more than just a sport— it’s a reflection of life’s challenges and triumphs. His story, filled with both soaring victories and hard-fought battles, serves as an inspiration to all.
“Life is just like cycling,” Mark concluded. “You never know what’s around the next corner. But if you keep going, the finish line will always bring something worth it.”
Mark is not just a symbol of speed and victory but also a testament to the power of perseverance, adaptability, and the ability to learn from every twist and turn on the road.
: A Green Revolution from Personal Health to Planetary Sustainability
掀起綠色轉型的漣漪效應 葛望平:從個人健康到地球永續,一場 翻轉世界的綠色革命
If global climate change is akin to the butterfly effect—one small change triggering widespread consequences—then Ko Wang-Ping, founder of O’right, is creating ripples felt around the world. Starting from personal well-being and extending to journeys in the Arctic and Greenland to witness climate change firsthand, Ko is quietly yet powerfully leading a green revolution destined to transform our planet.
“If you think eco-friendly products are always expensive, perhaps you haven't found the right approach yet. Green is an opportunity, not a burden,” says Ko Wang-Ping with a warm, confident smile.
The man behind the world's first carbon-neutral beauty brand speaks with ease, yet this success was born from a deeply personal tragedy.
In 2002, Ko lost both parents within six months. Deeply grieving, he moved homes to escape painful memories but soon collapsed from formaldehyde exposure in his new house. That incident awakened him to the critical link between environmental quality and personal health. Reflecting somberly, Ko shares:
“My doctor asked me if there was anything I truly wanted to do. I remembered my father handing me money to start a business, saying if I couldn't repay him directly, I should give back to society and our nation.”
By 2006, long before sustainability became mainstream in Taiwan, O’right was transformed into a dedicated green enterprise.
The Second Growth Curve: Turning Sustainability into Strength
Many companies fear green transitions, believing them costly and risky. Ko counters this with the concept of a "Second Growth Curve," persuading his supply chain partners that proactive transformation is the key to future success.
“If we stick to old ways, we'll eventually be phased out. Creating a second growth curve allows us to lead the market proactively, rather than reacting passively,” Ko emphasizes, referencing the once-resistant electric vehicle industry now racing to catch up.
Photography/O'right Word/ Tingyu Chen
Despite initial challenges and costs that could have crippled smaller businesses, Ko insisted:
“Our goal isn't to become expensive but to help everyone become greener and stronger together.”
He proactively partnered with packaging suppliers, paper manufacturers, and recyclers, even personally investing to support their transformations. His sincere commitment created a resilient and sustainable supply chain that has enhanced O’right’s global competitiveness.
Practical Dreaming: Poverty Fuels Innovation
Contrary to popular belief, Ko and his team demonstrate sustainability need not be costly.
“Our secret weapon is 'being poor,'” Ko jokes warmly.
“Without resources, we innovate.”
O’right’s resourcefulness led them to create the world’s first shampoo derived from coffee grounds, a byproduct previously considered waste.
“Coffee grounds naturally contain beneficial oils for your scalp—and they're virtually free,” Ko explains.
During the pandemic, this innovation boosted O’right’s business, proving sustainability can thrive economically.
“Dreaming is easy, but grounding those dreams to sustain your livelihood is the real challenge.”
Rather than investing heavily in advertising, O’right channels funds into research and development, ensuring their products speak for themselves.
This strategy led to breakthrough innovations, including the world’s first carbon-neutral shampoo and fully biodegradable packaging. By prioritizing substance over marketing, O’right set a new industry standard, prompting even major corporations to follow suit.
“Our budgets are like magic; we stretch every dollar threefold,” Ko laughs proudly. “The higher your position, the more creative your solutions must be—our true superpower.”
Witnessing Climate Change: Education as a Catalyst
Beyond his company’s success, Ko’s office walls display meticulous notes from his trips to the Arctic, reflecting his commitment to climate action.
In Greenland, he witnessed glaciers melting faster than scientists predicted, with thousands of tons of ice collapsing each second—far exceeding IPCC forecasts. Returning humbled yet alarmed, Ko now passionately advocates for environmental education.
“We can't just make products; we must change people's consciousness,” he insists.
O’right actively promotes education through documentaries, university collaborations, and its green headquarters, which serves as an open learning space for sustainability. Every year, thousands of visitors, from students to corporate leaders, experience firsthand how to implement ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles in business.
Looking Towards Y3K: Biotechnology and Sustainability
While global conversations focus on achieving net-zero by 2050, Ko envisions much further into the future—toward the year 3000 (Y3K).
“If we don't act now, Earth won’t reach Y3K,” Ko warns. He predicts biotechnology will radically redefine personal care, transitioning from mass-produced goods to customized solutions tailored to genetics, climate, and lifestyle.
“Someday, O’right’s products might vanish, but our brand’s spirit will endure,” Ko declares confidently.
“True success isn't measured solely by profits, but by our positive impact. If other companies in Taiwan adopt our methods, proving sustainability isn't just a slogan but a competitive advantage, that'll be our greatest victory.”

This is the production philosophy of Jenny Wang, Vice President of How Kan Entertainment. It perfectly captures the delicate art of balancing market demands, emotional connections and innovation in show production.
Amid the near standstill of the entertainment industry during the pandemic and the existential crisis faced by her company, Jenny led How Kan Entertainment to turn crisis into opportunity. Transforming from a content supplier to a trailblazer in creating innovative reality TV IPs, Jenny emphasizes that production companies must not only win the hearts of audiences but also gain the favor of advertisers and platforms.
Talking about Mr. Player, a national variety show that has lasted over a decade, Jenny speaks with a mix of pride and sentimentality. This program not only broke the so-called "three-year curse" of variety shows but also stood strong in the wake of the tragic loss of a key team member, Alien Huang.
"We were deeply heartbroken at the time, even considering stopping the show altogether," Jenny admits. "But the support of Jacky Wu gave us renewed confidence. He was willing to suit up again during that difficult time, leading the team in games and helping the show rise from its slump. We decided to turn that pain into a lesson for our audience. Today, our uniforms still carry a logo that symbolizes Alien, reminding us that he will always be a part of the show."
This resilience, combined with the team's chemistry, has elevated the show beyond mere entertainment,

transforming it into a form of life education. The profound emotions that helped Mr. Player emerge from its dark times also unexpectedly gave birth to another groundbreaking Taiwanese reality show, Hi Come in. Jenny recalls, "After Alien's passing, the producer of Mr. Player, Miss Yeh, was devastated and couldn't bring herself to wear the red team uniform again. She took unpaid leave and later considered resigning to open a café. We didn't want to lose such a talented colleague, so we suggested she produce a show about running a restaurant instead."
With that, Hi Come in was born. Not only is it a cross-platform reality show that airs on free-to-air TV, cable channels, and Netflix, but it has also become a milestone in How Kan Entertainment's journey to develop its own IPs.
The DNA of How Kan Entertainment: Authenticity and Finesse
Jenny Wang emphasizes that media has a social responsibility, especially when it comes to mainstream variety shows. She avoids chasing after vulgarity or overly individualized styles, instead opting for programs that reflect a "collective consciousness"—content that resonates with a broad audience.
For instance, All-Star Sports Day is not just about athletic competition, and Hi Come in is far more than a reality show about running a restaurant. "These shows are a microcosm of society," Jenny says with a smile. "You'll see blunt but genuine contestants, perfectionist chefs with a touch of stubbornness, and hardworking underdogs who frequently fail. Audiences see reflections of themselves in these characters and feel a deep connection."
She believes this emotional resonance is the cornerstone of a show's success. "If our programs can't make people laugh, cry, or reflect, then they lose their purpose."
Jenny firmly believes that the longevity of a show hinges on the sincerity of the team behind it. "The performers know we won't harm them. Even in the brutal format of reality TV, our editing process filters out anything that could hurt them." She jokes, "If we ever released the unused footage, we'd probably be rich by now! But we've chosen to protect our partners rather than simply chase ratings."
This culture of authenticity and finesse has encouraged long-term collaborations with artists like Jacky Wu, Sasa, and Guo Hongzhi, who trust How Kan Entertainment wholeheartedly.
From Crisis to Opportunity: Resilience During the Pandemic, A Balance of Pragmatism and Ideals
The pandemic dealt an unprecedented blow to the global entertainment industry. "When the TV networks decided to halt all productions, and we realized that our company had gone three months without any revenue, while hundreds of employees and their families were depending on us, it was a heavy blow. But we didn’t stop; instead, we took the risk of investing in our own productions," Jenny Wang shared.
One such production born during the pandemic was Watching All-Star. Undertaking the significant financial risk of self-funding and operating at a loss, Jenny emphasized, "The pandemic taught us the importance of creating our own original IPs. We can no longer rely solely on TV networks to outsource and fund our shows. To secure a foothold in the market, we must take creative control."
Jenny candidly admitted that producing shows today is no longer purely about creativity—it’s about the collaboration between business and artistry. "In the past, we would start with an idea and then figure out how to monetize it. Now, we first study the business model and then create content that meets market demands."
She shared a past misstep: "We once launched drip coffee as a tie-in product for Mr. Player, but we overlooked the fact that our primary audience was young people who preferred instant three-in-one coffee. Since then, we’ve put more emphasis on market analysis and audience research to ensure every step aligns with viewer preferences."
In recent years, How Kan Entertainment has been actively moving towards going public. On this, Jenny demonstrated both foresight and deep care for her employees. "For me, going public isn’t a life goal; it’s a means to ensure the company’s sustainability.I hope that in the future, every employee will own shares in the company, becoming shareholders who share in the glory of the company’s achievements. This is not only a way to give back to our employees but also a key to retaining talent for the long term."
The Challenges of the Y3K Era: Remember to Preserve Emotion
Living in the digital age, Jenny Wang believes embracing technology is an irreversible trend. "AI can help us save time on repetitive tasks, giving us more freedom to focus on creativity." She even envisions a future where AI technology allows for personalized content tailored to individual viewers.
Speaking about the Y3K era, Jenny’s predictions brim with excitement and anticipation: "Y3K represents an unparalleled era of innovation. Future entertainment won’t just be a one-way delivery of content—it will become interactive, even community-driven. Audiences will no longer just watch; they’ll participate. Maybe through AR or VR, viewers can fully immerse themselves in the show’s setting or even influence the storyline. Our challenge is to create content that enables this while finding the perfect balance between technology and humanity. Technology isn’t just a tool; it’s an opportunity to redefine the entertainment experience."
Jenny believes that future content trends will lean toward being more fragmented and personalized. "People in the Y3K era may not need full-length shows anymore. They’ll prefer quick, distilled bursts of information—concise, curated highlights rather than long, drawn-out narratives."
If she could leave a single piece of advice for Y3K-era audiences, Jenny’s words are profoundly moving: "No matter how advanced technology becomes, please remember to hold on to emotion. A life without emotion is like eating food without seasoning—bland and meaningless."
She elaborates: "Future shows might not even need human actors; they could be entirely produced by AI. But without emotion, no matter how polished the content, it’s meaningless. Creativity requires experiencing both pain and joy, because only the deepest pain can bring about the most genuine happiness."
From market insights to content innovation, from business strategies to team management, Jenny Wang’s variety show philosophy is rooted in sincerity and depth. Yet, regardless of technological advances, she firmly believes that emotion is the soul of a program. "In the future, humans may not need to flip through heavy books or spend years in traditional learning, but they’ll still need emotional nourishment. The only thing humans can truly carry with them is their authentic experiences of joy, anger, sorrow, and delight. These emotions are the reason shows can transcend time and leave a legacy. "I hope that one day, audiences in the year 3000 will watch the programs we create today and feel the most genuine emotions and efforts of humanity."
This is Jenny Wang’s hope for the future and her most heartfelt promise to the present.

In the land of windmills and bicycles, where bikes outnumber people, the electric bike revolution is gaining momentum. By 2020, the Netherlands boasted a whopping 2.9 million e-bikes, accounting for 12% of the nation’s total bike fleet. Over a quarter of all cycling kilometers were covered on these battery-assisted machines. The rise of e-bikes is far from a passing trend—it’s providing road users with a wider, more sustainable transportation option.
From classic e-bikes to lightweight mopeds and the ever-popular cargo bikes (bakfiets), e-bikes are redefining mobility across Dutch streets. These electrified cargo bikes aren’t just cool - they’re practical. With pedal-assist motors and extra load capacity, they make urban life a breeze. Whether it's carrying groceries, transporting children, or delivering packages, the e-cargo bike has emerged as a daily hero in Dutch cities. Take family outings for example. It’s common to see Dutch parents cruising the streets with their kids comfortably seated in a cargo bike. Weekday mornings and the 2:30–3:00PM school rush hour (when most Dutch
ANN'SVOYAGE安的旅程
primary schools let out) turn school gates and playgrounds into buzzing hubs of e-cargo bike activity. Parents effortlessly pick up their kids—no honking cars, no parking hassles, just pure pedal power with an added boost.
Speaking of parking headaches, let me share a personal tip. In tight urban spaces where parking is scarce, expensive, and traffic feels like a survival game, the e-cargo bike is a game-changer. While a regular bike’s rear seat can carry just one school-aged child, a good e-cargo bike can handle 2 to 4 kids depending on the model. It’s a lifesaver for Dutch parents who want to ditch the car keys, skip traffic and still get their kids to school on time. Who needs a minivan when you’ve got a bakfiets with turbo mode?
A 2022 survey by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) confirmed what we’ve all been seeing on the streets: e-bikes are taking over! Among cyclists ages 12 and up, nearly one-third are now riding e-bikes. The latest fans have been people 65 and older. They've embraced the convenience and seamless mobility it offers. But it's not just retirees who are enjoying the ride. The 12-50 age group is quickly catching on, with e-bikes becoming a popular choice for daily commutes.
Don’t own an e-bike? No problem! Sharing is caring in the Netherlands! Major cities are launching e-bike sharing hotspots everywhere. Thanks to AI-powered fleet management, users can easily find their next ride using an app. Want to know where the nearest e-bike is parked? Just check the app for location. Curious about the remaining battery life or how far it’ll take you? Check the app for available range. With just a few taps of your smart phone, you can reserve and rent your ride, turning urban mobility into a seamless, stress-free experience.
E-Bike Safety in the Spotlight: AI to the Rescue for Safer Rides
The RIVM report explains why so many people are switching to e-bikes: they’re easy to ride and take the strain off your legs. The popularity of e-bikes brings attention to advancements in battery technology. Top battery manufacturers like BOSCH are raising the bar with AI-powered systems. These intelligent algorithms evaluate factors such as your pedaling intensity, speed, and even the condition of the road. Based on this data, the system adjusts the level of assistance, ensuring you get the boost you need when you need it most—like tackling that steep uphill climb without breaking a sweat.
While e-bikes bring countless benefits, they’ve also introduced new safety challenges. According to the Dutch Institute for Road Safety Research (SWOV), overall road accidents have been declining in recent years, but bicycle-related crashes are on an upward trend. In 2020 alone, a staggering 68% of all serious traffic injuries reported by hospitals involved cyclists with e-bike fatalities accounting for at least one-third of those deaths.
These statistics paint an even grimmer picture for older riders. E-bike users 65 and older are the most vulnerable, facing the greatest risk of fatal accidents. The SWOV study cites several reasons behind e-bike accidents, including higher speeds, heavier bike frames, and the physical challenges faced by elderly riders. For example, the increased weight of an e-bike compared to a traditional bicycle can make mounting, dismounting and maintaining balance more difficult. Combine that with higher average speeds and the risk of serious injury skyrockets for older users in the event of an accident. These concerns have made e-bike safety a key focus for cycling dynamics researchers and manufacturers alike.
Dr. Arend Schwab, a retired scholar from Delft University of Technology, notes that most e-bike accidents aren’t
collisions with other vehicles but single-vehicle crashes, where the cyclist loses balance and topples over.
To address this, Delft University of Technology has been collaborating with bicycle and battery developers since 2015 on research aimed at using artificial intelligence to assist bike stability. According to Dr. Schwab, their AI system is designed to intervene when a bike begins to lose balance. By subtly guiding the handlebars in the direction of the fall, the system increases the contact area between the bike and the ground. At the same time, it maintains a steady speed of 4 km/h to help stabilize the bike and prevent a full-blown crash. This project is still a work in progress, but its potential is promising.
Dr. Schwab also highlights another issue: with the sheer volume of bicycles increasing, existing bike lanes are becoming overcrowded. Too many cyclists squeezed into too little space is contributing to the rise in accidents. Beyond developing balance-assist systems, he stresses the importance of urban planning solutions, such as reducing car lane space to expand bike lanes. After all, safer and more spacious bike lanes could be just as crucial as any high-tech solution in tackling this growing safety challenge.

When you've spent considerable time in one city, you begin to notice the nuances that shape everyday life. Safety, cleanliness, and convenience are likely the standards most people care about. If you were a policymaker, improving transportation and infrastructure should be your top priority because a good transportation system is often considered a global benchmark for high-quality living.
Studies show that 93% of transportation behavior changes are driven by family growth. A single person can rely on walking and couples enjoy strolling together. However, space and time become necessary considerations when a child is on the way. Owning a car might mean living further away while living in the city requires dependence on a robust public transportation system.
It was such needs that birthed Kari Anne's first cargo e-bike! It instantly expanded her range of exploring the city. Exorbitant parking fees were no longer a concern. Weekend picnics lightened the burden of finding a parking space. On the back seat, children rode with wind in their faces gleefully whooping “Whee!” as we splashed through puddles, says Kari Anne. With her eyes sparkling, she told me that choosing to use an e-bike was the best decision she has ever made.
This was the beginning of Kari Anne’s life as a cycling evangelist. She not only worked as a traffic advisor for public sectors, driving initiatives for green and blue urban projects, but also organized events promoting cycling. Her dream is to create a livable city for everyday life, and cycling has become her most powerful tool to achieve it. In 2020 World Car Free Day, Kari Anne founded Whee!, Norway’s first electric cargo bike-share company. This model provided a practical and more
sustainable mode of transportation, attracting over 200 members within just 24 hours. Whee! is based in Oslo and specializes in renting Mini Cargo e-bikes on a subscription basis. They offer four annual cleaning and maintenance services, insurance coverage, and a highly efficient anti-theft tracking system. Whee!’s target customers are urban caretakers and women, offering bikes designed for riders as short as 150 cm. With a low frame and stable cargo rack, Whee! bikes ensure safety and balance while carrying loads. The rear seat accommodates children, and the bike’s total load capacity can reach an impressive 220 kg. Its compact design also makes parking and storage safe and convenient. Today, Whee! boasts over 500 members and has been awarded the 2024 Oslo Green Business Award.
The Whee! workshop was transformed from a neighborhood dairy store and traditional butcher shop with its high ceilings now accommodating a hoist system. In the approximately 100-square-meter space, three female technicians were busy replacing studded winter tires on bicycles—an annual safety-critical task. Mini Cargo e-bikes were lined up neatly, suspended in rows, awaiting lubing, repairs and testing. These mechanics, some of whom are journalists or designers, share a passion for creating a better environment. Sliding smoothly across the workshop on their stools, they discuss how to build a digital bike health passport system to improve future maintenance efficiency. However, converting transportation systems depends on government and public will. Many people still hold a romanticized attachment to private cars.
Walker, an environmental psychologist, notes that when it comes to driving behavior, individuals often have significant blind spots. Problems such as speeding, carbon emissions and traffic accidents go ignored because car culture has created a positive image of driving. This phenomenon, known as “car brain,” fosters resistance to alternative transportation methods as they challenge the established order of driving. Over the past century, cars have evolved into symbols of status, making us forget what roads without engines once looked like—clean air and unspoiled landscapes.
As climate change intensifies, Oslo, a city of nearly 700,000 people aims to have 25% of its residents using bicycles for daily commuting by 2025. However, policies that overemphasize private electric cars often sideline space for the cycling movement. From an urban design perspective, while electric cars reduce carbon emissions, an overabundance of vehicles isn’t a sustainable solution. Cycling, as a mode of transport, is far more environmentally friendly. Bikes require simpler infrastructure, less maintenance, and minimal parking space, making them ideal for creating livable, climate-friendly cities.
Taiwan exports over 1 million electric bikes to Europe annually and produces one-third of the world’s bicycle components. With excellent manufacturing capabilities and valuable examples from other cities, could we also work on creating a more livable environment together? Imagine a child on the backseat of an e-bike, soothing their tantrum with sunshine and waving to butterflies along the way. This is the simple joy that bicycles bring to life.
On a December afternoon, Kari Anne purchased a two-meter-tall Christmas tree near the church and tied it to her Whee! Bike. With the sunset at her back, riding her proudest ride, she carried both the festive spirit and her mission, pedaling forward, one step closer to her goals.

Enjoying photographing, traveling, observing, and Nietzsche, Tsai Jo Ping worked in Taiwan in the advertisement, media, and technology industry. Having been living in Korea for 10 years, she has 1 girl, 1 boy, and her own brand. Believing it's a rare opportunity living on earth, she vows to enjoy and experience this life, to share all things of beauty, and to leave all beautiful things behind.
As the global emphasis on environmental sustainability and carbon reduction continues its momentum, South Korea stands as a frontrunner in the "Green New Deal" initiative, setting an example in sustainable urban development. In urban transportation, the South Korean government actively promotes eco-friendly and health-conscious commuting alternatives, with bicycles emerging as an indispensable transportation option for many residents. Particularly in major cities like Seoul and Busan, the rise of bike-sharing services and the continuous improvement of cycling infrastructure have made bicycles a key choice for daily commuting. However, with the surge in bicycle usage, safety concerns, especially accidents caused by speeding have become increasingly prominent and demand urgent attention.
To tackle the rising number of cycling accidents, the South Korean government has introduced bicycle speed limit warning signs in key locations, including major roads, school zones, and crowded areas. These measures aim to encourage cyclists to slow down and reduce the risks linked to high speeds. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to addressing traffic safety concerns while reinforcing the government’s commitment to public safety alongside its green policies.
KOREA
Beyond speed limit signage, South Korea is heavily investing in expanding and upgrading bicycle lanes.
Dedicated cycling paths are now standard features along major roads and parks with segregated bike and pedestrian lanes implemented in high-traffic zones. This separation significantly reduces incidents between cyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles. For nighttime safety, enhanced lighting along bike lanes ensures clear visibility for riders, effectively lowering the likelihood of accidents in the evening hours.
Excessive speeding is one of the leading causes of cycling accidents. High speeds make it difficult for riders to maintain control and drastically reduce reaction times to unforeseen events, increasing the risk of collisions. Moreover, fast-moving bicycles pose a significant threat to pedestrians, especially in mixed-use paths like park trails or sidewalks, where riders and walkers often share the space. To address these challenges, the government has deployed real-time speed detection systems in high-traffic areas. For instance, locations like Seoul’s
Han River Park and school zones now feature these advanced signs that not only display the current speed of passing cyclists but also issue reminders to slow down. Studies have shown that these measures significantly influence rider behavior with most cyclists reducing their speed upon seeing these reminders effectively mitigating accident risks.
The data highlights the effectiveness of these initiative. Over the past five years, South Korea has seen a steady decline in bicycle-related traffic accidents. In 2023, there were 5,146 reported bicycle accidents, representing a 4.6% decrease compared to 2022 and an 8.6% drop from 2019. The number of fatalities also fell sharply, from 91 in 2022 to 64 in 2023—a reduction of nearly 30%. These figures highlight the tangible outcomes of the government’s efforts, allowing citizens to enjoy the benefits of eco-friendly commuting with greater peace of mind. South Korea’s ongoing investment in cycling infrastructure reflects its strong commitment to public safety and sustainable urban development.
Leveraging AI and Smart Traffic Systems: The Future of Cycling Safety
The evolution of smart cities is driving the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a key tool in transportation. The South Korean government has begun exploring the fusion of AI technology with smart traffic systems to enhance cycling safety. Real-time safety alerts and road condition forecasts powered by AI enable riders to avoid congested or hazardous areas, improving their overall cycling experience while reducing accident risks. This innovation aims to create a safer urban cycling environment.
South Korea’s dedication to cycling safety showcases its responsibility and determination. Through rapid technological advancements, the country has not only upgraded transportation infrastructure but also demonstrated strong innovation in smart traffic systems. Applications of AI, whether in real-time speed detection, intelligent traffic light management, or future road condition predictions are pivotal in enhancing cycling safety. As a pioneer in technological innovation, South Korea is set to remain at the forefront of global cycling safety and smart traffic innovation, serving as a model for cities worldwide.

In 2023, global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reached 57.1 billion metric tons of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e), marking a 1.3% increase from 2022 and setting a new record high. According to the report, the main sources of global GHG emissions are:
・Electric power and energy sector – 26% Transportation sector – 15%
・Agriculture and industrial sectors – 11% each Future carbon reduction efforts should prioritize these high-emission industries. The report also warns that, at the current trajectory, global emissions will reach 57 billion metric tons of CO₂e by 2030, significantly exceeding the targets set by the 2015 Paris Agreement To keep global temperature rise below 2°C, emissions should be capped at 41 billion metric tons CO₂e, while
the 1.5°C target requires an even lower threshold of 33 billion metric tons CO₂e. Without more aggressive carbon reduction measures, the world will face increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events, posing a serious threat to human survival and environmental stability.
"Is it normal to crave sweets after exercising?" This is a common question among athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Dietitian Tseng Yi-Chun from the Taiwan Institute of Sports Science laughs and says, "This is actually your body's intelligent response! It's not just a random craving but a genuine need for energy replenishment."
She explains that during exercise, the body consumes large amounts of glycogen as its primary energy source. When glycogen levels drop, blood sugar decreases, prompting the brain to signal for carbohydrate replenishment—leading to cravings for sweets. Additionally, exercise stimulates dopamine secretion, which boosts happiness. However, if the pleasure from exercise is insufficient, the body may seek sweets to compensate, explaining why many people crave sugar after working out.
Since the body genuinely needs replenishment, is it okay to indulge in bubble tea or cake after exercise? Tseng Yi-Chun shakes her head, "Choosing the right sweets is crucial. The question isn't 'Can I eat sweets?' but rather 'What kind of sweets should I eat?'"
She points out that consuming the right carbohydrates helps restore glycogen, promotes muscle recovery, and reduces stress hormones like cortisol. However, opting for refined sugar and high-fat desserts—such as cakes, cookies, or sugary drinks—may provide a quick energy boost but also cause sharp blood sugar spikes, disrupting metabolism. Instead, selecting natural sources of sweetness, such as fruits, oats, and honey-glazed sweet potatoes, and pairing them with protein can support more effective recovery.
"So, don’t be trapped by guilt!" she says with a smile. "Craving sweets after exercise is completely normal, but making smart choices is what truly matters."
The Golden Recovery Window: How to Eat Smart and Maximize Training Gains
To get the most out of your workout, the 30-60 minutes after exercise is the golden recovery period—when the body absorbs nutrients most efficiently. Consuming the right balance of carbohydrates and protein during this time accelerates recovery and enhances performance.
Post-Workout Meal Suggestions:
After Endurance Training (e.g., marathons, cycling)
Endurance sports require a higher carbohydrate intake. Tseng recommends 1.0-1.2g of carbohydrates per kg of body weight, paired with 20-25g of protein, such as:
• Banana + yogurt
• Honey cake + protein shake
• Indian flatbread, hummus + chicken
After Strength Training (e.g., weightlifting, gym workouts)
Strength training requires fewer carbohydrates. She suggests 0.5-0.7g of carbohydrates per kg of body weight, paired with 25-30g of protein, such as:
• Fruits, oats + Greek yogurt
• Baked sweet potato + boiled egg
• Frozen berries + protein shake
"The key is to replenish the right nutrients and prevent excessive fatigue," she emphasizes. "That way, you can keep improving your performance!"
Smart Strategies to Manage Sweet Cravings
When faced with post-workout sweet cravings, Tseng Yi-Chun advises, "Instead of forcing yourself to resist, adopt a strategic approach to satisfy your cravings without compromising your training outcomes." She shares two practical methods:
Method 1: Understand Why You Want Sweets
"I often ask my athletes: 'Are you really hungry, or is it just a craving?'" Tseng believes that understanding the root of sweet cravings is more effective than simply suppressing them.
• If it’s true hunger, it's best to have a balanced recovery meal with protein and carbohydrates.
• If it’s due to stress or emotional eating, finding a healthier alternative is the better solution.
"Occasionally indulging in cake or ice cream is okay! A truly healthy lifestyle isn’t just about balanced nutrition but also psychological well-being. Understanding this can help people develop a healthier relationship with sweets."
Method 2: Change the Way You Reward Yourself
Instead of using cake or bubble tea as a post-workout reward, Tseng suggests turning recovery meals into a ritual:
•"I worked hard today—I'll make myself a homemade healthy smoothie!"
•"High-quality yogurt with fresh fruit is my post-workout ‘exclusive dessert’!"
This approach not only satisfies cravings but also provides essential nutrients for recovery, maximizing the benefits of exercise.
"Craving sweets after a workout is totally normal. The key is eating the right foods in the right amounts!" Tseng Yi-Chun concludes. "Choosing natural carbohydrates paired with protein—such as fruit with yogurt or oats with a protein shake—not only satisfies your taste buds but also promotes recovery. Don’t let sweets become a burden—embrace them wisely!"

Why Does a Massage Hurt Even More?! — Unveiling the Secrets of Sports Massage to
Restore Muscle Elasticity and Health
騎車騎到鐵腿?按摩怎麼越按越痛?! ——破解運動按摩的秘密,幫肌肉找回彈性與健康
After pushing through a tough mountain ride, your legs feel like they've been run over by a train. So, full of anticipation, you book a session with a massage therapist, hoping to rejuvenate your legs and bring them back to life. But the moment the therapist’s hands press down, you can’t help but scream internally: “Wait… is this a massage or torture?!”
Time to Bust a Common Myth: Does More Pain Mean a Better Massage?
Nope! Many people believe that "if it hurts more, it is working better," but that’s actually a huge misconception. A proper sports massage should feel "intensely relieving but not so painful that your whole body tenses up." If the pain is so unbearable that you're gritting your teeth and barely holding on, your muscles might actually tighten even more—defeating the entire purpose of the massage!
Let’s take it from someone who knows best—Chen
Chih-Hao, a competitive cyclist who dominated Taiwan’s cycling scene in the 90s. As an elite rider, he understood the importance of muscle care firsthand. He realized that prolonged high-intensity training, without proper massage and recovery, could lead to increased muscle tightness, eventually causing injuries or even forcing him off the bike altogether.
After retiring, instead of leaving cycling behind, he transitioned into a professional sports massage therapist. Now, he shares his expertise with other cyclists, helping them find the most effective ways to recover their muscles and maintain peak performance.
Chen emphasizes that the goal of sports massage is to stretch and smooth out muscle fibers, improve circulation, and speed up the removal of metabolic waste, thereby enhancing recovery. Unlike traditional acupressure massages that focus on pressing specific meridian points, sports massage works along the muscle’s natural structure to achieve deep relaxation and mobility.
He highlights: "Sports massage isn’t just for pre-race or post-race recovery; it’s a form of routine maintenance that everyone should do." Whether you’re a commuter who cycles to work every day or a weekend warrior tackling mountain climbs, regular massages can reduce fatigue, improve performance, and make your rides feel smoother and more effortless.
Sports massage isn’t just about feeling good—it’s a scientific way to keep your body in top condition. Sure, it might come with a bit of that "hurts-so-good" sensation, but with the right techniques and a professional massage therapist, your body will feel rejuvenated and reborn!

Foot Care Made Easy: Say Goodbye to Plantar Fasciitis Worries

First, stand at arm’s length from a wall with your palms flat against it. Position your feet in a lunge stance, bending your front knee while keeping your back knee straight, ensuring your feet remain firmly planted on the ground. This effectively stretches the tendons from your calf muscles to your heels. Try holding this stretch for three to five minutes, then relax briefly before repeating to thoroughly ease muscle tension.
Additionally, Dr. Chang recommends gently rolling your foot over a golf ball, tennis ball, or foot massage roller. Another effective technique is softly scraping the sole of your foot with a gua sha tool, starting from the heel through the arch and toward the Yongquan acupoint— located in the slight hollow about one-third of the way forward from the heel. Dr. Chang smiles as he says, “These simple daily practices can help you remember to care for your feet amidst your busy life, keeping unnecessary pain away.”
Have you ever experienced a dull ache in your feet after a long bike ride or been startled by a sharp pain in your heels when taking your first step out of bed in the morning? These discomforts are your feet's gentle way of reminding you they need more care and attention to prevent issues like plantar fasciitis.
Dr. Chang Yung-Ming, director of Fengyuan Yipintang Chinese Medicine Clinic, explains that, aside from long-distance running and prolonged standing, improper seat height or pedal positioning while cycling—along with footwear that fails to adequately support and cushion the arch—can place repeated stress on the plantar fascia, eventually leading to inflammation. Dr. Chang warmly advises, “Don't overlook these small details in your daily routine; making timely adjustments to your gear ensures your feet receive the comfort and protection they deserve.”
When plantar fasciitis strikes, each step can become painfully challenging. While Western medicine typically recommends ample rest and, if needed, anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving medication, Dr. Chang shares some simple home remedies to lovingly care for your feet.
Of course, if self-care methods don’t fully relieve your discomfort, you may consider advanced treatments through Chinese medicine. Techniques such as acupuncture and muscle-tendon realignment therapy help release tight plantar fascia, complemented by soothing herbal ointments. Your Chinese medicine practitioner can further tailor treatments by targeting specific acupuncture points on your calves or even your lower back, providing a comprehensive plan to ensure each step you take is effortless and comfortable.
A NOBLE GAME HITS THE STREETS: BIKE POLO SHOWCASES
CYCLING'S VERSATILITY
貴族遊戲成為街頭熱潮
鐵馬球展現自行車多元型態
When you hear "polo," do you picture a group of elegantly dressed aristocrats, mounted on majestic horses, swinging mallets as they dash across a lush green field? Well, swap out the horses for modern-day "iron steeds" – bicycles and replace the rhythmic clatter of hooves with the smooth whirring of chains. Voilà, you’ve got bike polo - a sport that’s a thrilling mix of speed, strategy and sheer passion. Not only does it redefine what cycling can be, but it also proves that bikes are far more than just tools for commuting or fitness - they’re versatile stars of the sports world!

sport. He aimed to create a new activity to promote cycling, blending bicycles with the traditional game of polo to birth this fun and innovative cross-cultural sport. Compared to its horseback counterpart, bike polo is much more accessible and it doesn’t demand a hefty budget or strict venue requirements. All you need is a bike, a mallet, a ball, some protective gear and you’re ready to dive into this noble game’s modern twist.
Thanks to the bike’s nimbleness and the teamwork-driv en, high-energy dynamics of ball sports, bike polo has become a global favorite among urban cyclists. It's a perfect blend of tradition and modern street culture, proving that the spirit of polo thrives just as fiercely on two wheels!
A TEST OF BALANCE AND COORDINATION
Bike polo is played on a smaller field compared to traditional polo, often taking place on basketball courts or mini-soccer fields. The sport comes in two variations: grass and hardcourt. Grass bike polo demands stamina and technical finesse, though the uneven ball trajectory can disrupt the game’s flow. On the other hand, hardcourt bike polo has become the modern standard, typically played on enclosed hard surfaces.
A standard match features three players per team, with no dedicated goalie. Players alternate between offense and defense. Goals are placed at either end of the court, and players score by striking the ball with the mallet head. The first team to score five points, or the one leading when time runs out, wins the game. A key rule? No feet on the ground! Players who “dab” (touch the ground with their foot) must ride to the sidelines and tap a bell or cone before rejoining the action.
Bike polo isn’t just about staying upright or handling a bike—it’s a full-on challenge of balance, bike control, strategy and teamwork. It’s a thrilling, fast-paced activity that keeps riders and spectators alike on the edge of their seats!
WEI SHIH-HSIN: A DECADE OF DEDICATION TO BIKE POLO IN TAIWAN
Wei Shih-Hsin, fondly known as "Xiao Wei," is the founder of the TCC Bike Polo Club in Taichung and one of Taiwan’s key figures in promoting bike polo. Ten years ago, bike polo was barely a blip on Taiwan’s radar. Xiao Wei stumbled upon a video of the sport on an international website and was immediately captivated. The game combined two of his passions and he fully immersed himself in mastering every detail of this unique sport.
For Xiao Wei, bike polo’s greatest appeal lies in its simplicity and versatility. He chuckles as he describes it: "Bike polo is a sport for everyone. It doesn’t require fancy gear or advanced skills. If you can ride a bike and aren’t afraid of a few falls, you’re good to go! You can even play on a rental bike like a UBike!" With a mission to spread the word about this sport, Xiao Wei founded a club to introduce it to others. Alongside like-minded friends, he
practiced in open spaces during the quiet hours of early mornings or late nights, gradually building a strong, committed community.
Thanks to the efforts of Xiao Wei and other advocates, bike polo has steadily gained traction in Taiwan. Players in cities like Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung have grown in numbers, with local clubs regularly organizing tournaments and meetups. Events like the Kaohsiung Harbor Cup Polo Exchange, hosted by the Kaohsiung Bike Polo Association (KBPA), have even drawn international participants, serving as platforms for cultural exchange and skill-sharing.
These activities not only enrich Taiwan’s sports culture but also offer young people fresh and exciting recreational options. Bike polo is quickly becoming one of the most beloved street sports among modern Taiwanese youth, blending fun, strategy, and a touch of rebellious flair.
