The number of memorable stories.

As the world faces the challenges of COVID-19 in 2020, it is important to slow down. Throughout history, contagions have been the catalyst in forcing changes to lifestyles, business models and leading us re-evaluate the true core value of life. A

healthy, balanced mind and body, and sustainable corporate goals have always been Velo’s goal. What better way to combine physical and mental health with a sustainable lifestyle than riding a bicycle? It is with this in mind, during this particularly challenging time, that we want to share with you the secrets of healthy riding provided by professional physicians, as well as delicious dinners, prepared by gourmet chefs, most suitable for relaxing after exercise.

O n ce

the mind and body are balanced, aesthetic appreciation is an important nutrient to improve the texture and quality of life. We travel with Velo Vice President Ann Chen to Paris to find out how a new experience of the five senses in the world’s sexiest city became a source of inspiration and innovation for the Velo brand design. The cover story explores the crossborder collaboration between Ann and several designers to, together, create a new saddle cushion, highlighting the infinite possibilities of aesthetics and creativity of the Velo brand.

" I t was the best of times. It was the worst of times,” Charles Dickens wrote in A Tale of Two Cities. The good and bad; light and darkness. It is not about timing or external circumstances, but it is about the kind of mentality and method you choose to face what life throws at you.

second generation successor Ms. Ann Chen An-rong saw a growing demand in the retail market for aftermarket saddles. This prompted them to establish the Velo saddle brand in 2008 offering three distinct high quality saddle categories: Aesthetics, Professional, and Leisure. Utilizing Velo’s state of the art manufacturing, they have kept their focus on “Affordable comfort and performance!”

unrelenting efforts to advance their research and design comes to life in one of their four factories in Taiwan and mainland China. Over 40 years of experience has allowed Velo to become the world’s leader in bicycle saddle production, as well as handlebar tape, grips and e-bike injection part.

In

1979, Stella Yu Tsai-yun founded Velo because she was determined to meet the needs of all bicycle riders, from grand tour professional racers to children on their first bicycle. As an established saddle manufacturing expert, 30 years ago Ms. Yu was asked by a female American cyclist for help to address serious discomfort caused by her saddle. Ms. Yu developed the first relief cut saddle and launched the first women’s specific saddle model.

MODERN PARIS INTERPRETING ELEGANT AESTHETICS

ANN'S VOYAGE

“THANK YOU, PARIS. FOR GIVING ME A DIFFERENT REALIZATION. ALTHOUGH I WON’T BE ABLE TO LEARN YOUR ELEGANT ATTITUDE, I WILL DO MY BEST TO EXPERIENCE IT.”

Even without decorative flowers on the brocade, Paris still calls to global fashionistas who bow to her pomegranate skirt. Paris Fashion Week makes its grand debut in the autumn and winter seasons. Top designers showcase their year’s worth of effort among the romantic, splendid glitter. It was here on the Parisian runways that Velo Vice President Ann Chen met prosperity. In her conversations with designers, she experienced firsthand the baptism of ultimate aesthetics. Although beautiful and amorous, the French capital is not Ann’s love. However, for the usually busy Velo executive, the rarity of leisure let her appreciate Paris with a different mindset. At the same time, she witnessed the workflow from designer to runway. For Ann, it was a fresh realization and emotional stirring.

Pa ris is beautiful but romance has never been Ann’s style. "Stella, the founder, took me abroad for the first time and we traveled to Paris as her graduation gift to me.

9

ANN'S VOYAGE

no more, in the right place. I marvel at those designers, contemporaries of their time, to have such exquisite ideas, such bold and innovative use of space that allowed the emergence of fashionable and modern architecture. It has become a stunning focus for the city.” Ann still cannot forget how the magnificence of the architecture took her breath away. Paris should be attractive and romantic for young girls. Full of expectations, we unfortunately encountered a strike and everything was at a standstill. It was the early morning hours by the time we got in the hotel. The only thing that moved me was the Louvre, to glimpse the masterpiece of designer I.M. Pei.” Romantic flowers were memories of disillusionment for Ann growing up. It was not until many years later that she had a change of heart. "For the first time in so many years of work, I had the opportunity to relax a lot, stay in the same city for so many days, walk around and look around. I met many new friends in Paris, and shared different experiences.” Seeing things from a different mindset, a different impression is felt. “The first time I went backstage of a fashion show, I saw the teams racing for every second to make sure every detail was adjusted to perfection, in contrast to the elegance and self-confidence on the runway – it simply was two different worlds. I finally understood that the spotlight on the stage for 10 minutes is a foundation laid by 10 years of effort off the stage. It was really a very fresh experience.”

In

addition to Fashion Week, Ann also participated in the street photography of

T hrough

the professional photo team, which led her to realize that the shiny professional layouts in fashion magazines were not easy to capture. "Smile from the heart. That kind of smile for the camera has always been a bit awkward for me. But in the past few days, Paris had brought a true smile to my face.” The beauty of Paris is definitely related to its gorgeous retro and historical architecture. The buildings in Paris awakened Ann's dream of becoming a designer. Ann, who has loved painting since childhood, took design and business courses at school simultaneously. Although she later gave up due to many considerations, the love and appreciation of design and architecture were deeply imprinted in her heart. "I have a special feeling for buildings. Whether it is the baroque or the modern and stylish buildings on the streets of Paris, they always make me stop for a long time, to admire the ingenuity of these century-old buildings, in the era when they relied on human craftsmanship. How did they know how to make all the meticulous figures or animal sculptures, just like this, no less, 10

Ann’s leadership, such a love and pursuit of finely detailed aesthetics is also reflected in Velo’s longstanding demand for its clients and itself, from the design and innovation of saddles to the attention and care to accessories. This journey to Paris also gave Ann a more open mind to rethink how to use aesthetic elements in Velo products. "Whether it is fashion or architecture, the essential elements for success are ingenuity and details. Just like every time we face a different client, we will consider how to develop and design products with ingenuity to meet the client’s requirements, but also get all the details in place to confidently deliver a product that has both forward thinking aesthetics and delicate details.”

There

are actually many approaches to learning. Sometimes letting go and relaxing is also a way. By slowing down, you can see scenery that you haven't noticed before, you can come round to another way of thinking. This time Ann, usually a workaholic, had the chance to slow down and to not walk so fast. She didn’t have to consider her routine or schedule. A stranger in a strange city, she shopped as she liked, and even when she was studying, she had the

ANN'S VOYAGE freedom to stretch in her learning. "In fact, during this trip to Paris, I had a deeper understanding and learning of beauty. I opened my heart and did not have preconceived notions on beauty or ugliness. Every object and thing has its own beauty and attitude. Just like some shoes I considered ugly are purchased by people, the trends on the runway during Fashion Week, while I couldn’t see how some of them were beautiful, I still worked hard to accept them. This time for me, the appreciation of beauty is no longer black and white. Instead, there are some gray areas that can accommodate more interpretations of aesthetics and broaden my horizons.

-Ann

An n Chen emphasized that perhaps it was this phrase that deeply moved her: "As a child, happiness is simple. As an adult, simple is happiness." From a different perspective, you can have a different understanding of beauty and tolerance of life. If you look at things with a different mindset, you can get a different kind of emotion.

ANN'S VOYAGE

In

Paris, Ann Chen and popular German fashion brand founder Damur Huang had a beautiful encounter. Their fateful meeting continued in Taiwan with a wonderful and exciting exchange.

After finishing his studies in Europe, Damur Huang created his own brand, DAMUR, in Berlin, Germany. For this young CEO designer, his biggest dream is to create the Asian version of LVMH Group. "A clothing brand has limited influence. Only by breaking out of that framework, and establishing a group to create a high-quality environment for a fashion chain can an integrated supply chain be consolidated and help Taiwan ’s textile and fashion industry rise to a new level. The difference between Asia and Europe is that Asian brands and designers are used to going it alone. But the European fashion industry like LVMH has created a healthy environment for conglomerates that is able to attract talent that is capable and innovative. Da mur Huang said the fashion industry is closely related to society and history. The clothing accessories you choose not only represent your personal style, but also reflect the changes in contemporary society, culture and trends. For Damur, fashion is very historical. Moreover, fashion is a platform for communication. Designers must accurately create and record the language of the era to connect with people in different fields.

12

ANN'S VOYAGE

F o r example, if Damur wanted to tailor a suit for Ann Chen, what would the style be? "I

might want to design a fresh blue or pink dress or jumpsuit for her, because Ann feels warm to me like spring. This design should outline Ann’s silhouette, yet also be comfortable and natural. Her usual apparel might reflect the restrictions of her work. But I hope these clothes can allow her to feel the autonomy of her body without being too strong or melancholy, and be able to be herself."

An n expressed surprise at Damur’s observation, saying, "When I was a student, most of the color tones of my wardrobe were soft and pastel. Once I started work, black, white, gray and earth tones occupied my wardrobe. Damur's designs took me back to my relaxed self.” Damur and Ann smile at each other. This is how aesthetic and fashion easily weaves their magic into people’s hearts.

POWER-PACKED CROSS-INDUSTRY EXCHANGE VELO VP ANN CHEN PAINT A NEW FUTURE FOR SADDLES WITH THREE DESIGNERS

V elo

VP Ann Chen leads the visual design and aesthetics for the Velo brand. It was her dream when she was young to be an artist or designer. Now at the helm of Velo, Ann has the chance to make her dream a reality in Velo’s DNA. This time, Ann, along with with Huang Weixiong, editor-in-chief of “Men’s Uno” magazine, He Min, Studiobase architect, and interior designer Wei Jiayan have teamed up for a power-packed, industry exchange. They cocreated and painted bicycle saddles for the Velo brand. The intersection of four distinct creators was destined to ignite innovative thinking and exchange. When they finally got together, the seemingly freewheeling drawings brought out the uniqueness of each individual, which combined to an incredibly powerful moment for Velo. This saddle represents Velo’s innovative strength for the future. Even more, it brings diversity to Velo’s next stage.

"Although

each person's task for this creation was to be responsible for painting a part of the saddle separately, when I started preparing, I always wanted to change the shape of the saddle. I kept thinking about why I couldn’t change the saddle. Why does the line of the saddle have to keep with its existing appearance?" Ann says that this creative exchange gave her more time to delve into this issue because she always hoped to create a breakthrough in the design framework, which would allow for more possibilities for the Velo brand.

"I

really admire He Min’s work. The precise triangular geometry, combined with the bronze and silver colors makes the saddle softer, and adds a harder charm. I also like Wei Jiayan's work. The white block against the green and yellow colors of

.the background gives the feeling of riding a bicycle in the forest in good weather!" Ann looked at the works of He Min and Wei Jiayan and she excitedly says she had rarely tried their techniques. Seeing the works of others is like seeing the essence of the creator’s life and discern their thinking and aesthetics, Ann says.

"I

am a very precise person. When I face the canvas, the first thing I do is to pick up the paper cardboard and draw a straight line, and then draw a geometric triangle, because for me, the clear line, the stable structure is the most attractive," He Min

said. She cares more about the perfection of the functional design than the simple appearance. As a result, He Min especially appreciates the hollowshaped cutout design of the Velo saddle because this is not only just about appearance, but also gives the saddle a more flexible and functional design. This is undoubtedly a design concept with the rider in mind. Taking into account form as well as function is precision aesthetic in her eyes.

Li k e He Min, interior designer Wei Jiayan works in the field of indoor architecture. His creative style is different from He Min. He loves the natural landscape of the mountains and the sea. He has a free soul. In his paintings, racing over the white road, the accompanying forest scenes change

like the four seasons. "This painting has a lot to do with my own love for nature. I love being in the outdoors. Cycling is also an outdoor sport, so this creation is an extension of that." Wei Jiayan's work invites the audience to also try out a good bicycle trip.

In

the saddle designed by the editor-in-chief of “Men ’s Uno” magazine, Huang Weixiong, one can easily glimpse the elements of popular fashion. The bright pink saddle complemented by the dark blue starry background stirs thoughts of a city of desire.

Huang Weixiong Editor-in-chief of “Men's Uno” Magazine

"T he bright pink of the cushion is like my personality, a bit stuffy but very popular." Huang Weixiong says that the bright pink in the painting cannot be ignored, symbolizing uniqueness, while the yellow spray paint symbolizes the courage to break through. He hopes that in the era of instant

gratification, Velo will continue to fearlessly show itself and forge a new path.

C o in cid e ntally, like Huang Weixiong, Ann’s paintings also use pink as the foundation. The background color of the painting is mixed with pink, orange and yellow tones. The saddle design in the middle uses blue and brown renderings, and the whole painting conveys a fantasy and unique visual experience.

When

the four creators put their works together, a Velo saddle that was free, popular, innovative and stable was born! The power of this exchange is now pushing Velo to its next step and Ann Chen is ready for a bright future.

GIANT WELCOMES SMART FUTURE USING BIG DATA CREATES DYNAMIC CYCLING SCIENCE

Lo c a t e d

in the Central Taiwan Science Park, the brand new headquarters of Giant Group is a creation of flowing and harmonious space for cycling and shuttling. The interior is a bright and spacious, smart office. When he has time, Giant CEO Young Liu tests the smart sensor systems of the new office. This new smart headquarters also represents the dynamic cycling science that Giant has created in recent years, and will confidently usher in the new era of electric bicycles.

"Sometimes

when I ride a bicycle around the island, I can't help but think, should riding be this tough? Wouldn’t it be easier to enjoy the scenery along the way? Electric bicycles provide this answer, with both sport and leisure functions, to meet consumer needs, and provide a variety of riding styles.” Smiling, Giant CEO Young Liu says that with the electric bicycle, riding does not have to be hard work. It can also bring consumers, a family of three generations or even four generations, riding together in the same lifestyle. Giant’s electric bicycles in the European market have outstanding performance. From the depths of the China-US trade war, this has given the bicycle industry a glimpse of the dawn and an opportunity.

Giant CEO Young Liu

The

electric bicycle is completely different from the traditional bicycle, in scope and production concept. Young Liu insists on investing in the R&D of electric bicycles, relying on years of experience at the grassroots level to thoroughly observe the consumer market, and having the courage to innovate. “I always tell my colleagues that oneway thinking is out. We must start with system development, such as braking systems, transmission systems, wheel systems. Starting from this kind of system thinking represents the opening up of our own ideas and visions. From the basic needs of the product, to design, workmanship, price, and value-added, all of these have to withstand the test of global competition.” Young Liu points to the long-term cooperation on saddles with Velo as an example of increasing the possibilities on a comfort system or safety system.

By

harnessing Taiwan's core competitiveness in the three major manufacturing areas of battery, motor and controller, Giant has created a very unique eco-system of cycling science that is both organic and dynamic, under Young Liu’s leadership. Through human-machine interface calculation parameters, Giant’s electric bikes can automatically detect and make the best recommendations for the power configuration of the ride, not only to go uphill and save effort, but to dynamically create a near-perfect riding experience. No matter if it is the daily commute or leisure cycling, Giant’s electric bicycles are not only electronic, but also have a smart and intelligent brain, providing an experience that exceeds consumers' expectations.

C EO Young Liu emphasizes that he has long advocated the advancement of both theory and practice. After years of experimentation and real application, his blueprint for business strategy is focusing on product development and innovation, while also finding a simple solution. That is, touch the consumer by exceeding their expectations. Bicycle riding is actually a very personal experience. It is closely related to the rider's specific conditions such as height and physical fitness. Therefore, professional services before and after sales are very important. “If a professional teaches you how to ride a bike better and tells you what type of model best meets your needs, consumers feel a completely different quality of service.” Young Liu says that in the fast-changing global market, there are some things that are out of your control, and you can only choose to make the most appropriate adjustments as you look to the future. Giant’s new factory in Hungary will be set up to make use of the reduction in supply lead time. In the march of the bicycle industry , Young Liu and Giant will proceed steadily to their own unique rhythm. 21

When bicycle sharing became a global trend, when it became the last mile in a city's emerging culture, we realized that this day would always come, and the bicycle industry must also evolve.” Wang Zhaoyang emphasized that embracing bike sharing is a big step in the transformation of Phoenix, but the evolution of the bicycle industry is on the rise of electric bicycles taking to the road. Big data has transformed bicycles from mobility tools to become part of smart transportation-minded cities. Big data will digitize future operations management and marketing to be able to more accurately launch suitable products in response to market needs. Leading the standard for a young, healthy and slower-paced urban lifestyle befitting a riding culture is the specific goal and direction of Phoenix.

While committed to building its business on century-old experience, keeping pace with the times and continually innovating – its three major core competitive strengths – Phoenix will always be prepared to transform ahead of time at the critical moment. The cooperation between these two companies plays a positive role in our growth.” Wang Zhaoyang says that it is a lot of pressure to promote the development of the bicycle industry and create national gifts. But working with Velo towards a common vision is a reassuring partnership.

Wang

Zhaoyang recalled his most unforgettable riding experience. He rode for 50 kilometers in the wind and rain of a typhoon. The challenge was enormous, but it has become one of his greatest memories. He will continue to lead Phoenix Bicycles into the future. He dares to dream; he has three-, ten-, thirty-years’ goals and vision: "In the next three years, Phoenix will become the China brand in the markets of advanced western countries. In ten years, the hope is the Phoenix brand will be a leading symbol of the bicycle industry in terms of scale and business capabilities. In the next thirty years, we look forward to Phoenix Bicycles offering a riding experience and culture that can bring a better future to any city and play a key role in the process of mankind's transition from a material civilization to a spiritual civilization.” Phoenix is prepared and has the confidence to meet the challenges of the next century.

RACING IN THE DARKTHE YEAR OF THE RAT SADDLE 2020 is the Year of the Rat in the Chinese zodiac calendar. While rats bring up impressions of being stinky, dirty and cunning, they are also known for being nimble and fast. This year’s Velo Year of the Rat saddle plays to those characteristics. Think about Speedy Gonzales -- he only left a cloud of dust in his wake and no one could catch the lightning fast rat in the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes cartoons. For this year’s saddle, Velo selected the Prevail TT, a time trial racing saddle, to represent the speed of a rat must travel when every second counts. The design features an all black background with colorful neon beams and is reminiscent of light beam trails glowing in the dark left by a rat zipping past without a shadow or trace.

INNOVATIVE HYDROGRAPHICS ADD COLOR IN NEW WAYS No t

many saddle designers consider the finish of the underside of a saddle nearly as much as the finish and design of the saddle shell. Just recently, Velo has started using hydrographic techniques, also known as water transfer printer, to add designs to the underside of the saddle. Velo first started this with the Ray saddle, from their Senso professional series, which creates a colorful, smooth and shiny effect. This process can be customized to give each saddle its own distinctive style.

LED LIGHT INTEGRATION FOR SAFETY LE D

safety lights are important when riding at night to increase visibility and stay safe. To add lights without compromising aesthetics, Velo’s recently created a seat with integrated lights in the cushion seamlessly to serve as a reminder to passing vehicles. The lights are nonglare, non-heat producing and use minimal power to operate the three light modes: steady, flashing and fast flashing. Velo is currently working on developing the lithium battery power supply in hopes of making this saddle available as soon as possible.

SHORT-NOSED ANGEL TT SADDLE IS HERE Velo

was one of the first saddle manufacturers to offer custom saddles for professional racers. As more and more requests for short nosed saddles came in based on improved performance and results, Velo launched the Senso TT saddle. The saddle featured a 244mm length and was well received by riders. In 2019, Velo launched the Angel TT saddle at only 241mm, just over the UCI minimum of 240mm, and with its lower weight, it has been in high demand. Using our Super Light Foam, a full carbon fiber shell and bow it only weighs 135g. The Angel TT is the best option for time trial races where light weight matters.

EDWARD SHYURNG: FOCUS ON HUMAN-ORIENTED BASIS, AWARENESS, ACTION, ACHIEVEMENT

"I

am committed to innovating education for the youth,” states prominent industry leader Edward Shyurng, who has been the Dean of the Entrepreneurial and Industrial Academy at Chung Yuan Christian University and who once served as a senior executive at Tait Marketing. He quickly reached his personal goal of financial independence and, as he planned, retired at the age of 45. From business to academia, from managing astonishing wealth as a CEO to becoming a full-time, unpaid volunteer, he desired to share his firsthand experience with young people and allow them to create their own values and goals in their own way. “Because young people are the future, and the future belongs to the young people!" Edward Shyurng was clear about his life’s mission.

These core values can also bring sustainable business opportunities.”

After getting up every morning, he will have a period of meditation to let his mind settle down. He will look through his notebook at what feels or he pays attention to and look at why it happened.

" As

Shyurng described this as an exercise of inner wisdom awakening. He also led a corporate team to meditate and walk every morning, to calm their minds through simple walking, and at the same time face their own problems and confusions. After a few days, he found that students had different attitudes and depths in dealing with problems. Even in the face of very difficult and painful choices, they still maintained a clear mind and made the best decisions.

USE OF RATIONAL MIND TO APPRECIATE TEA TOMMY TANG’S TEATALK SETS THE STANDARDS FOR TEA

T he wine glasses are not filled with wine but with different types of tea. The founder of the TeaTalk Academy, Tommy Tang, picks up a flute, smells the tea, and talks tirelessly about the brand, dedicated to the educational journey of tea. In history, Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huang established weights and measures that led to a unified standard for economic activities across the nation. In modern times, Tommy Tang of TeaTalk Academy finds a common language for the tea ceremony culture that has developed and spread for thousands of years. He translates his knowledge of tea into a language that everyone can understand with the goal of setting new standards for tea. For Tommy Tang, an extreme enthusiast of tea cultivation and tea tasting, he once nurtured his tea garden into the first to be approved for certification for the production of toxin-free tea. As a connoisseur of the teamaking process and tea quality, his sense of frustration rose as he delved deeper into the vast culture that is tea: "I am an information engineering person, but I found that when I took tea art classes, many of them were too cultural and aesthetic. Too many vague words that were meaningless. For rational individuals like me, it was incomprehensible.” Instea d

of giving up, the rational side found inspiration in wine and coffee tasting courses. "I found that wine and coffee courses have very clear, practical ways of teaching. Like general courses, they have a clear structure and language. Everyone can learn about wine and coffee and even beginners can participate. Once you reach a certain level of understanding, only then can you move into a stage of appreciation.” Tommy Tang, smiled as he said, with the epiphany, he began to think about how to set up a general education system for tea, to reverse the disappearing cycle of the tea tradition.

Li k e the Chinese proverb of “having stones from one hill to polish the jade from another” to describe the figurative translating of wine and coffee lessons for tea, Tommy Tang, from out of nothing, established a teateaching course at the TeaTalk Academy. Systematically and step by step, it imparts knowledge of tea and the secrets to tea tasting. It introduces the world's six major teas: white tea, green tea, yellow tea, Oolong tea, red tea, black tea. Then according to the tea type, it introduces the varieties, farming area and production method. From there, the lessons cover the "aroma" through the nose (for example: fruity, jasmine, freshly brewed milk, etc), the "taste" of the feel in the mouth (such as: smooth and full, rough on the tongue, tea water-like), and the "taste" 28

the trend of the knowledge economy, Tommy Tang saw the opportunity of the “white space” of the tea industry. He devoted himself to researching and developing teaching materials, promoting courses at the TeaTalk Academy, and establishing a certification system. He does not sell tea. He only shares tea knowledge, and has no conflict of interest with tea merchants. This strategy has won the respect and his credibility with tea farmers and tea merchants. Not only has he appeared on TedxDadun, but also in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France to start classes, allowing Taiwan tea to regain its position on the international market. It is like how he always advises everyone who wants to learn about Taiwan tea to first drink Oriental Beauty tea. "Oriental Beauty has a sweet finish in the throat, and leaves a pleasant taste. But the price is relatively high.” Tommy Tang proudly says this is exactly the true value of Taiwan tea.

EATING RIGHT

THE BEST DINNER EVER

I

like hiking and my husband enjoys cycling. Occasionally, our hikes or rides will last more than half a day and our legs will scream in pain when we are done. According to a nutritionist friend, muscle pain after exercise can be alleviated by a good diet.

“T oo

much lactic acid will accumulate in the body due to excessive exercise causing muscle soreness,” my friend said. “However, you can eat more alkaline food to neutralize the lactic acid. In addition, eating foods rich in vitamin C, zinc and antioxidants, along with foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids can help soothe aching muscles.”

His string of chemical terms sounded too “academic”. I knew if I couldn’t remember it, I wouldn’t learn anything. So, based on my preferred tastes, I created a list of healthy foods and posted it on the refrigerator door. It was clear and easy to read and it comes in handy when I need it.

Lo o k i n g at my refrigerator, the frozen salmon and spinach are good. I decide to thaw the salmon and check out the foods list: Bean-based foods, milk eggs, spinach, broccoli, kale and other cruciferous vegetables. Tomatoes, citrus, lemon, kiwi, nuts. Sardines, mackerel, other bright fish and salmon. Whole grains, pumpkin, sweet potato, regular potato, blueberry and ginger.

30

EATING RIGHT

Oh ,

I forgot about ginger. I’ll make another pot of pumpkin soup and spice it up!

Th e salmon is thawed. I mix the lemon juice, honey, soy sauce and olive oil to marinate the fish. It will take 20 minutes for the fish to be golden brown on both sides when cooked in oil. The marinade won’t be wasted either. I boil it down and reduce it to create a nice sauce for the fish. I serve the meal with stir-fried spinach and brown rice along with a bowl of ginger pumpkin soup. After dinner, I finish with a cup of yogurt and blueberries. Doesn’t this sound like the perfect dinner for after exercise?

PREVENTIVE MEASURES TO MINIMIZE RIDING DISCOMFORT ON THE BIKE. LET’S LEARN FROM ANCIENT CHINESE “YI JIN JING” FOR CULTIVATING HEALTH

A

35-year-old Taiwanese man who has been riding bicycles competitively for a long time suffered from chronic, nonbacterial prostate inflammation, lower back and testicular pain. He took traditional antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed by his regular doctor. However, due to poor spleen and stomach functions, the medical treatment caused severe discomfort and diarrhea. Meanwhile, his testicular pain did not improve noticeably. Researching into other options, he contacted Chinese medicine practitioner Dr. Chang Yung-Ming for consultation. Through a combination of Chinese medicine and applying its methods for treatment, he was able to bring his condition under control and the pain subsided, leading to normal recovery.

Dr.

Chang explains that long-term compression of the perineum caused by cycling can result in poor blood circulation and inflammation in the perineal area. For men, this can lead to inflammation or enlargement of the prostate. For women, it can cause reproductive and urinary tract infections, which can result in frequent urination, local pain or increased secretions. Analyzing the condition from the perspective of Chinese medicine, the perineum and the groin area are part of the "Jueyin Liver Meridian of Foot" and "Ren Mai". Careful adjustments of these two meridians can treat the pain of the perineum.

Dr.

Chang, with his familiarity of the ancient Chinese methods for cultivating health notes that light aches and pains can be reduced with two simple exercises that stretches

32

and opens up the liver meridian. He recommends practicing the two Yi Jin Jing methods in addition to the movement of stretching the liver meridian before and after riding can be effective in preventing tightness in the perineum and testicular pain. Regular practice of this stretching pre and post ride with abdonimal breathing techniques can adjust the “Ren Mai” which is also known as the Conception Vessel. Lastly, Dr. Chang also suggests using hollow (cut out) bicycle saddles to increase air flow and reduce compression on the perineum.

Stretching the Liver Meridian Place the feet relatively close to the perineum, raise the right hand and stretch it toward the left side, then raise the left hand and extend to the right. Continue switching sides for 5 minutes. 33

MAN SUSPECTS PROSTATE CANCER DUE TO ELEVATED PSA BUT CYCLING WAS CULPRIT

A

man in Taiwan went to the hospital because he had severe groin pain. His blood test result showed PSA (prostate specific antigen) was higher than 4ng/ml, which needed to be followed up with a biopsy due to the possibility of prostate cancer. Fortunately, during consultation, the physician found that the patient was a long-time cyclist and diagnosed that the bicycle saddle was causing inflammation of the prostate, leading to an increased index reading; it was a false alarm! Dr. Jack Chiu Hung-chieh, director of the urology department at Asia University Hospital, said that in recent years, with recreational cycling’s rise in popularity, patients being diagnosed with prostatitis are younger. The usual age of prostatitis patients is 30 to 50 years old, but recently the number of patients in their 20s to 30s has been on the rise.

25°–30°

When pedal is at lowest point, knee angle should be 25-30 degrees

Fo r patients experiencing pain caused by long-term compression of the perineum, Dr. Chiu points out that the first line of treatment is to give an alpha blocker and muscle relaxant. Depending on the situation, this is followed by low energy shockwave therapy. Dr. Chiu says low energy shockwave therapy is used by the rehabilitation department to treat patients with joint or muscle pain, and is now also used by the urology department to reduce perineal pain. The recommended course of treatment is once a week – done 4 to 6 times – and as long as it is complemented with home care, the result can be very effective. Perineum Pain Home Care Instructions

When bike chain and pedal are parallel, knee should align directly above pedal axis

1.Temporarily stop cycling for 3 to 10 days. After resuming cycling, ride for ten minutes, while letting the hips leave the saddle for about 20 to 30 seconds. This will allow the blood flow in the perineum to return smoothly. 2.Drink lots of water after cycling, 2000 to 3000cc daily, to prevent urine from building up 3.Cool down after cycling to strengthen and stretch lower pelvic muscles 4.Take a warm water bath, 2 to 3 times a day, for 10 to 20 minutes each time 5.Limit alcohol, coffee and other irritating foods 6.After sitting for a long time, stand up, at least once every hour, to also help foster a positive mood 7.Don’t work all night

Cycle for 10 minutes, letting hips leave the saddle for 20-30 seconds

8.During intercourse, don’t refrain from ejaculating, so as not to have reverse flow back to the prostate and cause inflammation

In

addition, Dr. Chiu says that the saddle in direct contact with the perineum is also important. It is recommended to choose a style with a hole in the middle of the saddle, which can both ventilate and reduce pressure to lessen minor trauma and inflammation. He says that according to a 2007 report in the medical journal "Current Sports Medicine Reports" called "Genitourinary Problems in Bicyclists," the proper saddle height and fore-aft position should keep the knee bent at a 25 degree to 30 degree angle, while at the same time, the knee should be aligned directly above the pedal axis to reduce perineal pressure.

WORLD’S LARGEST BICYCLE PARKING STRUCTURE OFFERS MORE THAN 12,000 PARKING SPOTS In

the Netherlands, there are more bicycles than people, which makes bicycle parking hard to find in large cities. To address this problem in Utrecht, the Dutch government invested 30 million Euros to construct a bicycle parking structure under Utrecht Central Station with space for up to 12,000 bicycles. The structure is three stories tall and uses double layer bike racks to squeeze in all of these bikes. It is accessible 24 hours a day, year round. The parking lot is electronically controlled and riders can get real time parking updates via a mobile app. This structure overtakes a bicycle parking structure in Tokyo as the largest bicycle parking structure in the world!

August 2019, British cyclist Neil Campbell broke the Guiness World Record for men’s cycling in North Yorkshire, UK, when he reached the speed of just over 280 kilometer per hour (kph). In doing so, Campbell broke the record previously set by Dutch rider Fred Rompelberg in 1995 at 268.831 kph.

In

order to set this speed record, Campbell was pulled along by a Porsche and when ultimately released he continued pedaling up to 280.55 kph. The bike Campbell was riding cost an estimated 15,000 pounds and used 3-D printed parts and a carbon fiber chain. Campbell’s team is planning to travel to Utah in the United States in 2020 with hopes of breaking the alltime world record for fastest speed traveled by bicycle. The record is currently held by American woman Denise Mueller-Korenek, who set the record of 296kph in 2018.

AMPUTEE CYCLES 2,160KM ROUTE FROM SICHUAN TO TIBET

UNDERSTANDING THE UCI MINIMUM SADDLE LENGTH OF 240MM

240

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) sets strict regulations for international cycling competitions. Currently, the minimum saddle length requirement is 24 cm and the maximum length must not exceed 30 cm. Typical saddle lengths are around 26 to 27 cm but recent trends have riders moving much closer to the minimum length of 24 cm. These short nose saddles, as they are referred to, started becoming popular first in the triathlon world as they allow a rider to sit in a lower riding position, thus reducing wind resistance. These saddles also reduce perineal pressure compared to longer saddles making a lower position more comfortable.

T he rugged terrain between Sichuan and Tibet would be a big challenge for an average cyclist. In the summer of 2019, though Wang Yonghai, an amputee with only one leg from China, rode the route. Even more impressive is he rode the route towing his seven year old daughter in a trailer from Chengdu, Sichuan to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. He covered the 2,160 km route in 21 days. Wa ng

Yonghai, 47, became an amputee at age 19 due to an accident. From the depths of despair, including suicidal thoughts, Yonghai fell in love with cycling and became an award winning disabled cyclist. He says that an important lesson in having a physical disability is to not only rely on others for help but it is important to make your own effort and have courage to face society in the midst of one’s disability.

In

response to this trend, Velo developed the Angel TT saddle in 2019. This saddle is just inside the UCI minimum length at 241mm long and retains the the exclusive Y-Cut hollow design from Velo’s Angel collection. It is not only a beautiful saddle; it is also a highly functional one, as well.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

Cycling on the Bjäre Peninsula on a beautiful summer day is perhaps the best thing there is. When I am on my bike out there, it is like the feeling I have when swapping out my off-road bike to the road bike in the springtime. I get a sense of freedom that I rarely get anywhere else. At Bjäre there are plenty of paved roads with little traffic, which means that I can spontaneously cycle a bit wherever I want without risking it suddenly becoming a dirt road or highway. The landscape is expansive so you can see far ahead and never get lost; it is varied and scenic. There, you can choose to cycle in the countryside through open farmlands, through thick forest, or along the coastal road through small ports and villages. This kind of environment means it is not hard to find inspiration and develop the mental toughness needed to train and push your limits. It is great now that Swedish international team MEMIL Pro cycling has established their base in the area as well. Now every time the team gets together to ride, they can begin to understand my passion for this beautiful landscape.

I NS PI RE D BY D AD TO BE A RACING CYCLIST My

interest to be a racing cyclist came from my dad. It started at the Vätternrundan in 2009. The Vättenrundan is the world's largest sport event in Sweden. I was running around and taking photos of things that I thought were interesting. While snapping shots of bikes and riders, an unexpected seed was growing inside me. I didn´t know if anyone my age was riding like this, but I wanted to do it anyway. I started cycling with my dad and dreamed of becoming one of the professional cyclists I saw on TV. I began to train more and more on my own bike, which was a very simple mountain bike. I started cycling in the forest but my bike was not really made for that. I repaired it again and again and coming up with at home repair ideas before I was able to get a better mountain bike. My parents initially saw that I cycled in the woods because there I could escape from all the cars. I did that when I couldn't follow my dad on the roads. I dreamed of racing. In 2011, I began to race competitively with local cycling groups on country roads and off-roading.

In

2014, I raced in my first competition, SMACK. It was a 10km long TT race that I finished in 16 minutes, 7 seconds. I came in second place and was a full two minutes faster than the third-placed competitor. I became more confident that this was what I wanted to do. I started to learn everything about exercise and diet in order for my training to be as optimal as possible.

My

biggest goal as a cyclist has always been to live off of what I love. I have always wanted to have my training as my work day so that I can focus on it 100% and avoid compromises in training and competition. What will raise my game from here is to take part in more races internationally and compete in bigger competitions more often. This way I can grow to a level where I can fulfill my goals and live my dream life.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

I wish to stay in Sichuan-Tibet One day more To breathe in the natural fresh air To feel the verdant world Yearning for my simple life Sichuan-Tibet is far from me But in remembering My mood is lifted and light This beautiful uncommon place With faith in self This is happiness

Tibetans’

happiness is just this simple. If you make happiness a part of you, then it is not difficult to experience the meaning of happiness. Why not seek happiness, if you are just a fleeting passerby anyway?

Af ter the finish of the Qiong Hai Wetland bicycle race, a group of us thought that since we were there, we should relax and look around! After some discussion, there was still no clear idea of where we should go. Finally, someone suggested, "Let’s go ride the Sichuan-Tibet route." We all agreed it should be fantastic because the beauty of the Sichuan-Tibet route has long been talked about for its beauty and wonder. If we could ride the actual journey, it would create memories to last a lifetime! W hen

I first knew I was going to ride the Sichuan-Tibet route, I was actually looking forward to it, yet also afraid of getting injured because I used to listen to many stories about the route and it felt like a mysterious and dangerous place. Once I experienced the journey for myself, I completely changed my mind. Yaks ran on the vast expanse of grassland, and the high peaks and mountains surround the endlessly flowing rivers. This scenery all along the route absolutely amazed me!

Th e weather in the first two days was very bad. The higher in altitude we went, the heavier and harder it rained. A group of us were pessimistic and worried, until we arrived at Xinduqiao and the legendary National Highway 318, where every cycling hobbyist entered Tibet. It was only then that the weather cleared. But it was already dark when we arrived and our group stopped to rest in order to prepare for the Sichuan-Tibet cycling trip the next day. Y o u must ride National Highway 318 to feel its charm. We climbed above 4,000 meters above sea level at a sharp switchback. We were a little worried about altitude sickness at the beginning of the ride but because we knew that the altitude was particularly high, we started out carefully as we trained our cycling to prevent any incident later. To ride slowly is to enjoy the magnificence of the scenery along the Sichuan-Tibet route. Photos taken from your mobile phone along the way are like picturesque postcards; they are amazing without

45

ONCE IN A LIFETIME any editing required. Riding on this beautiful and vast Sichuan-Tibet route is double the happiness of any other route. The weather is comfortable and pleasant and there are awesome views on both sides of the road. It is a real treat to ride!

R id in g and taking pictures along the way, I came to Tagong Temple (also known as Lhagang Monastery), is an important holy place for Tibetan worship in the Kham region and is

more than 1,000 years old. At 3,750 meters above sea level, the Tagong Grassland is the most famous grassland located in the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (also known as Ganzi) in the Sichuan Province. With luck, you can clearly see Mt. Yala, which sits 5,884 meters above sea level. In order to glimpse the snow-covered peak more closely, we made a temporary stop to swap our bicycles for horses to get a close look. With the majestic snow-capped mountain in front of us, the power of nature really made my chest swell and feel full of emotion.

We

stayed one night in Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture (also known as Aba). After a full day of riding, the vast mountains and rivers along the Sichuan-Tibet route made us forget that we also had to go back down the mountain and go home. Although we did not take the route to its very end, the unforgettable landscape we passed was deeply scored in our minds. To be able to travel to these special places in my lifetime has really touched me. My bike, my teammates and this expedition is something that not everyone can experience. Next time, we must complete the full Sichuan-Tibet route!!! Each photo Is full of memories In a lifetime A time of quiet to slow down. Pedaling on the road, I think about where we are going On the road pedaling, we head toward a distant destination From the road admiring the view, we experience and harvest much On the road in thought, we move forward For every trip, we hope the road is our muse! 46

WHO LOVES CYCLING THE MOST IN AUSTRALIA ? only 15% while people aged 35 to 54 contributed almost 50%.

Aus t r a lia n s

love sports and outdoor activities, and cycling is always a popular choice. The report “Australia’s Top 20 Sports and Physical Activities” published in April 2019 by Sport Australia showed that cycling ranked no. 5. In another survey “2019 Australian Cycling Participation”, which was published in September, it was estimated there are around 3.43 million Australians riding in a typical week and 8.39 million in the past year. Bicycles are a common fixture in Australian households, with 57.2% of households owning at least one bicycle, and the majority of those households owning three or more.

In

Do you know who loves cycling the most in Australia, though? The answer is not young people or high school students but 40+ middle aged males! This group is known as MAMILs (Middleaged man in lycra). The profile by gender and age of the cycling population aged 15+ showed that males aged 35+ contributed 50% while females aged 35 to 54 contributed 20%. Based on age, young people aged 15 to 24 made up just 8% of the cycling population, people aged 25 to 34 50

terms of the motivation to participate in cycling, some people use a bicycle as transportation to go to work, go to school or to go shopping, while others are motivated to improve physical health or fitness. Some people participate in cycling for fun or enjoyment while some use it to make a living, such as food delivery services. If you tried to guess what the top motivation is, it wouldn’t be hard to get the right answer, because we all know Australians love sports. Despite gender, the top motivation to participate in cycling is physical health or fitness. Among all age groups, except high school students aged 15 to 17 who ride a bicycle for fun or enjoyment, the primary motivation is physical health or fitness, followed by a way of getting around.

For the participation levels, the median annual frequency was 52 times which is equal to once per week. The average annual frequency was 105 times which is equal to twice per week. In terms of duration of participation, the median duration was 60 minutes while the average duration was 91 minutes.

COLUMN Based on these numbers, Australian cyclists on average would ride a bicycle twice per week for one and half hours each time. We can assume that those middle aged men who are keen on cycling would have higher participation levels for frequency and/or duration. As a result, it’s very common to see middle age male cyclists on the road in Australia.

T h e “2019 Australian Cycling Participation” wasn’t all good news, however. This survey, which has been repeated biennially since March/April 2011, showed that over the eight years between 2011 and 2019 the cycling participation rate appeared to have declined steadily. Although cycling participation among those aged 30 and above has been relatively stable or increased, it appeared that young people, teenagers and children aged under 30 were responsible for the overall decline. This is a warning sign for the future of cycling in Australia. T o promote cycling and educate young people, Bicycle Network, the biggest bike riding organization in Australia, delivered a nationwide program “Ride2School Day” that encourages students to get physically active on their journey to school. To do this, they work with schools, students, parents and local government to cultivate active and healthy school communities. It is held annually in March. In 2019, more than 900 schools and around 370,000 students participated. Held annually in October, national “Ride2Work Day” is Australia’s largest celebration of commuter riding. Working together with companies and local governments, the main objective of the day is to normalize the idea of riding to work. If the efforts to promote and encourage young people and children to ride a bicycle work, hopefully we can expect to see not only many middle age male cyclists on the road but also more and more young guns and girls riding a bike in Australia in the near future.

like baguettes and cafes, have always been an indispensable part of scenes of Paris. It almost seems to say, “I know how to slow down and enjoy!” But apart from the stereotype, what place does the bicycle occupy in French life?

van Oosteren, a Dutch who immigrated to France and a cycle-savvy intellectual, told the French: "Why have bicycles developed faster in the Netherlands than in France? Because the Dutch have thought of everything to ignite interest for riding bicycles in its citizens. When you search the word "cycliste" in Google in France, what you see are photos of top-tier riders decked out in full gear. However, when you Google the same word in the Netherlands, you find photos of ordinary people riding a bike to the grocers. For us, a bicycle is an art of life! "

1903, L'Équipe, a French newspaper, launched the Tour de France in order to stimulate circulation. In just five years, the circulation jumped from 25,000 to 250,000 and the iconic, international event has lasted to this day. The well-known film animation "Les triplettes de Belleville" set the Tour de France as its background, showcasing French passion for cycling as a sport.

in real life, do Parisians really love their bicycles? 60% of Parisians think that riding a bicycle to work is dangerous because France is known to be a kingdom of car brands, and the road is not always friendly to cyclists. Although cyclists enjoy the same absolute right of way as pedestrians, there are very few dedicated lanes for bicycles. They often must vie with cars in traffic and are always the more vulnerable one on the road.

In 2007, Vélib, a public bike rental system in Paris finally launched. Bicycle lanes have finally appeared on major roads, and fantastic bicycle lanes have been opened by the river. In 2017, French 52

the proper fitting saddle is essential to maximize comfort and performance while cycling! As a global bicycle saddle manufacturing expert producing more than 3,000 models of saddles, Velo has confidence it can satisfy any discerning rider. For more than 40 years, Velo has continuously focused on the design and production of various types of saddles. This includes understanding many different aspects of saddle design including how the seat bows, the materials used for the bottom shells, different types of foam cushions and leather design. Through repeated testing, Velo assesses shock absorption performance, breathability and low reflex performance in the pursuit of creating the perfect saddle to fit the rider.

T he goal of the 1.0 version was focused on comfort. The 2.0 version adjusts the scope to include performance in addition to comfort. Regardless if it is recreational riding or professional racing, Velo’s "Aesthetics", "Professional" and "Leisure" series provide the most complementary saddle offerings. Velo desires to help all riders and give them the opportunity to see even more beautiful views!

T o assist riders in selecting the most appropriate saddle, Velo introduced the "five-dimensional saddle test system", a points system that assesses a rider’s bike type, typical distances ridden, the frequency of riding, seat posture and speed. It then measures the width of the sit bones. The goal of these two steps is to guide a rider in selecting the best saddle possible for their style of cycling. T h e 5-D system is simple and effective, and has been well-received. The Velo team has worked to refine the original 5-D system and are excited to announce the "5-D saddle test system 2.0" in order to help the rider choose a comfortable as well as a performance-based professional saddle. Through the professional five-dimensional system, the credibility of the technical expert is improved. I think the design and parameters of the 5-D system encompass the major points and can be useful information to provide most riders select the suitable saddle.

For most amateur riders, the two measurements of "bike type" and "cumulative kilometers per week" are very good, especially as the latter can better reflect the actual riding status of the customer. The sit bone measurement tool is also very good, offering a fast way to measure the ischium. As a professional racer, I think the "posture" measurement in the 5-D system is great, because the more the body leans, there is a greater concentration of pressure when there is less area of the sit bones coming in contact with the saddle. I hope that in a high-power competition, the saddle can provide enough support, comfort and reduce pain.

good. You can choose the suitable saddle according to each individual's riding habit and it is worth it for cyclists to try it out. For professional riders, in addition to the basic five dimensions, more detailed measurements can be made to take into consideration the cyclists' individual needs and training habits.

2 Easy Steps To Choose The Right Saddle

STEP1

CALCULATE FIVE-DIMENSIONAL POINTS The dimensions of "type of riding", "distance", "frequency", "position" and "speed" make up the pentagon. They are divided into 3 levels and given points. The outermost circle is awarded 5 points, the middle circle is 4 points, and the inner circle 3 points. After adding up the total score, the points correspond to saddle levels between 1 and 5.

DECOMPRESSION GROOVE

Extending the length of the saddle and combined with the hollow groove design, this effectively relieves the pressure on the pubic bone and ischium when riding at high speed, gives the saddle strong support, soothes discomfort, and allows the cyclist to focus on the ride.

OPTIMIZING OFFENSE TIME

To cut the most wind resistance, the road cyclist will adopt a forward leaning posture, keeping the head and body low. The sitting point will be moved forward. By shortening the design of the saddle's nose, contact with the pubic bone is reduced, avoiding the pain and numbness caused by perineum compression, thus prolonging the offensive posture time.

REAR TIRE BUZZ CUT OUT

The rear of the saddle is cut out to prevent tire buzz on the saddle when a full suspension bike is at full compression.

STABLE SUPPORT

A higher-angled saddle means the rider's center of gravity in the hips stays stable going uphill. Meanwhile, the ergonomic grip on the underside means the bicycle can be easily lifted, improving mobility.

The foam of the seat cushion is the most direct connection between the rider and the saddle. The Leisure Series showcases Velo's pursuit of extreme comfort. After a good deal of research and development, Velo discovered the most suitable material that can fit to the body's shape, be shock resistant and reduce rebound for general commuting and recreational riding. It can give the everyday bike rider, who won't be wearing cycling shorts, a pleasant experience.

a. The predecessor of our D2 foam focused on relieving the pressure on the sit bones and to effectively reduce the discomfort caused by road vibrations.

b. Retaining its classic look, but abandoning the bulky appearance, the move to the D2 suspension system lifts and lightens.

c. Meandering along a winding path, the saddle can be ergonomic so that the body can move with each turn.

d. The old design of spring suspension saddle systems are suitable for owners of vintage bicycles.

e. The design concept comes from bedsprings. Through the radial spring of the saddle with the urethane ball double-shock suspension system, the pressure and weight are evenly distributed. The overall shape is slightly bulky due to more springs.

f. European cities still have many stone and gravel roads, so designs should reduce vibrations.
