Nelson-Atkins to hold 12th annual Day of the Dead celebration

of entertainments, including folkloric dancing from Los Bailadores de Kansas City and live music from Mariachi Azteca. Look for other unique attractions too, like Erick Felix’s Felix ’s live printmaking workshop and Isabella Buentello’s Buentello’s handmade piñata showcase. The museum will host its celebration on Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. An altar display will reside at the museum from Oct. 28 to Nov. 7. 7. The museum lobby will be the heart of the festivities, hosting dance exhibits from groups including Rose Marie’s Fiesta Mexicana and performances from Guadalupe Center Middle School Mariachi and Making Movies–led Movies –led Arts as Mentorship. “After the pandemic, that’s going to be really exciting to see the young talent in person,” Senior Manager of Community Programs Sarah Hyde Schmiedeler said. We’ve been working with these amazing community groups and these dance groups who’ve spent years of their lives sharing traditions,” she said. “We’re really proud and honored that this is one of the many places where people can learn about this tradition,” she added. The centerpiece of the celebration will be the traditional altar display, which
honors those that have passed. The museum has solicited and collected contributions from creators around the area, including student work from Van Horn High School and others. To nourish the living, vendors from around the city will offer foods, including goods from James Beard-nominated bakery Yoli Tortilleria. Panaderia de las Americas and The Tamale Kitchen will also be serving attendees at the event.

Para nutrir a los vivos, los vendedores de toda la ciudad ofrecerán alimentos, incluidos productos de Yoli Tortillería, nominada al James Beard. Panadería de las Américas y The Tamale Kitchen también estarán sirviendo a los asistentes al evento.
