There’s a lot at stake. In 2019, Hispanics accounted for almost a third of all new HIV cases detected that year, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates Latinos account for around a fifth of all U.S. HIV cases, about 1.1 million. In addition to HIV treatment and emergency medications dispensed

Gabriel, un especialista latino en difusión comunitaria con la clínica de tratamiento de ETS y VIH, Vivent Health, comentó que conectarse con las mujeres de la familia funcionó mejor tanto por su condición de líderes de opinión en la comunidad como por lo que él llama “chismes positivos”. “Piénsalo. Esas mujeres, una vez que empiezan, no dejan de hablar. Hay una sensibilización”. Gabriel indicó que su misión y la del proveedor de atención médica es “normalizar la plática” y reducir el estigma en torno a la salud sexual. Hay mucho en juego. after suspected HIV exposure — known as PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis — Vivent Health also provides testing for sexually transmitted diseases. “My role is to prevent people in the community from having to use those resources,” Hurtado said. That’s done “not by talking down to or talking at someone,” he said. “You have to come to a mutual understanding.” Hurtado said Latinos have to be understood as individuals rather than as a class. “We’re not a monolith.” The new immigrants that arrive from Central America would have different health needs and levels of comfort with healthcare than a third generation immigrant like himself, he said. “I wanna just break down those barriers,” he said.
Much of what’s driving the preponderance of HIV within the Latino community are the high rates of uninsured and undocumented persons, but he added that financial and cultural barriers also persist too. “It might have been a little taboo” to talk about sexual hygiene and best practices in physical intimacy, Hurtado said. So, what do you do if you want to be safe in intimacy? Contraceptives are the first line of defense. After that, “know your partner,” Hurtado said. Know the risks that sex with them could entail. If you suspect that sexual contact with someone may have endangered your health, “know your resources,” Hurtado said, adding Vivent Health offers free and confidential STD testing. The clinic also offers “safe sex kits,” which include condoms and lubrication. Hurtado describes the clinic as a “one-stop shop.” The suite of medical services provided by the clinic also includes dental care, housing assistance as well as a food pantry. “We are here. Hablamos español,” Hurtado said.

Gabriel informó que los latinos deben ser entendidos como individuos más que como una clase. “No somos un monolito”. Los nuevos inmigrantes que llegan de Centroamérica tendrían diferentes necesidades de salud y niveles de comodidad con la atención médica que un inmigrante de tercera generación como él, señaló. “Simplemente quiero romper esas barreras”. Mucho de lo que está impulsando la preponderancia del VIH dentro de la comunidad latina son las altas tasas de gente sin seguro médico e indocumentada, pero agregó que las barreras económicas y culturales también persisten. “Podría ser un pequeño tabú” hablar sobre la higiene sexual y las mejores prácticas en la intimidad física, refirió. Entonces, ¿qué haces si quieres estar seguro en la intimidad? Los anticonceptivos son la primera línea de defensa. Después de eso, “conocer a tu pareja”, dijo. Conoce los riesgos que puede conllevar el sexo con ellos. Si sospechas que el contacto sexual con alguien puede haber puesto en peligro tu salud, “conoce tus recursos”, recalcó, y agregó que Vivent Health ofrece pruebas de ETS gratuitas y confidenciales. La clínica también ofrece “kits de sexo seguro”, que incluyen condones y lubricación. Gabriel describe la clínica como una “parada única”.
