Participants will be able to leave remembrances — paper crafts remembering loved ones — at the display and join the celebration honoring the dead. The centerpiece of the exhibit will be a house structure dedicated to honoring loved ones lost during the pandemic. The house was chosen in part due to stay-at-home orders and isolation that were a feature throughout 2020. The exhibit was created in partnership with the Mattie Rhodes Center and the Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City.

Otro presentaba una foto de una persona cuyo recuerdo sería recordado a través de una pieza que también será exhibida. Los participantes podrán dejar recuerdos –manualidades de papel para recordar a sus seres queridos– en la exhibición y unirse a la celebración en honor a los muertos. La pieza central de la exhibición será la estructura de una casa dedicada a honrar a los seres queridos perdidos durante la pandemia. La casa fue elegida en parte debido a las órdenes de quedarse en casa y el aislamiento que fueron una característica durante todo 2020. La exhibición fue creada en colaboración con el Centro Mattie Rhodes y el Consulado de México en Kansas City. Aunque este año marca el undécimo año en que el museo celebra la festividad, ésta es sólo la décima celebración en persona. El año pasado, el museo conmemoró la ocasión con una celebración remota. Cuando el evento invitó a participar en el pasado, los visitantes del museo respondieron a la llamada en masa. “En 2019, imprimimos 5,000 [recuerdos]. Al pensar en tanto sentimiento expresado”, ella comenzó a dejar que la oración terminara sin encontrar una manera apropiada de describir el volumen y la profundidad de la expresión. Though this year marks the 11th year the museum has celebrated the holiday, this marks just the 10th in person celebration. The gallery marked the occasion last year with a remote celebration. For Schmiedeler personally, she said working with the event year after year has been a yearning experience for herself. “At the beginning, I was thinking of Memorial Day and that’s what I’m familiar with. I was able to scaffold to deeper meaning,” she said. “It’s really about the balance of solemness and respect for those that have passed and celebration of their lives and their memories. It’s just been learning a little bit over time from other people about how it’s a multifaceted holiday.” “Initially it seemed like not too many people know about [Día de los Muertos]. Anecdotally, it seems more people know now,” she said. On November 12, 12, the gallery will host a sculpture walk,, stargazing walk event and live music performance to complement the exhibit. All are free. The exhibit closes on November 15.

Pude construir un andamio hacia un significado más profundo”. “Realmente se trata del equilibrio entre la solemnidad y el respeto por aquellos que han fallecido y la celebración de sus vidas y sus recuerdos. A lo largo del tiempo, hemos aprendido un poco de otras personas sobre cómo es una festividad multifacética”. “Al principio parecía que no mucha gente sabía [del Día de Muertos]. Como anécdota, parece que ahora más gente lo conoce”, concluyó. El 12 de noviembre, la galería albergará una caminata de esculturas, un evento de observación de estrellas y actuación de música en vivo para complementar la exhibición. Todos es gratis. La exposición se cierra el 15 de noviembre.
