Héroes modestos y trabajadores entre nosotros By Rita Sherrie egions of industrious frontline heroes L Lhealth in the Covid-19 pandemic daily defy risks and hurdles. To honor all of them, 2más2KC will be profiling some of these courageous and dedicated professionals. Here are two.
Since 1998, Mario Valencia has managed the produce department at the Roeland Park Price Chopper. He logs about 54 hours a week ordering produce, delegating responsibilities, training new employees, helping and overseeing the stocking of produce, creating seasonal merchandising and more. One of his part-time workers is his son, Joshua Joshua,, a college student. Like his wife, a registered nurse, Mario recognizes coronavirus infection risks; he’s in daily contact with up to 100 people and works closely with 10-12, but he’s careful, and it’s worth it. “I really enjoy working with fruit and vegetables,” the bilingual native of Michoacán, Mexico says. “I like knowing our customers are going home with a really good quality produce.” Mario’s not aware of any coronavirus infections among employees. Strict precautions are taken to protect everyone, he says. Masking and social distancing are strictly enforced. When Mario and his family arrive home from work, they disrobe in the garage and bathe before putting on clean clothes. Although his age puts him at a higher risk for Covid-19, he doesn’t think of himself as a hero for continuing to work. He protects himself and otherwise does what he “really really loves.” Mario takes the pandemic and feeding the community seriously. “Stay safe,” he advises. “Don’t stop social distancing and wear your mask to keep family members and friends safe.” Thanks to Leticia Galindo, every room at Operation Breakthrough has a fresh supply of diapers, tissues, powder, milk,

Al igual que su esposa, una enfermera registrada, Mario reconoce los riesgos de infección por coronavirus; él está en contacto diariamente con hasta 100 personas y trabaja en estrecha colaboración con 10-12, pero es cuidadoso y vale la pena. “Realmente disfruto trabajar con frutas y verduras. Me gusta saber que nuestros clientes se van a casa con un producto de muy buena calidad”, dice el nativo bilingüe de Michoacán, México. baby and antibacterial wipes, baby food, clothes and other necessities daily. Leticia is the facilities assistant. She arrives before 6 a.m. weekdays, laundering bedding and soiled clothes and emptying trashcans. Once the kids arrive, she cleans up messes, picks up supplies and more. She loves being around the kids. When it comes to Covid-19 precautions, Leticia says Operation Breakthrough is rigorous. Rooms are cleaned and disinfected using high-tech equipment. Gloves- and mask-wearing, and social distancing are strictly observed. Enrollment at the 49-year-old early education center is limited now by the pandemic to about 600 children. Because she and her husband, also in facilities, have a son with asthma and contact with so many people, they’re especially vigilant, removing work clothes in the garage, showering and donning clean clothes when they get home. “I thank God we have jobs,” Leticia says. “Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to provide for our little family.” The bilingual Mexico City native prays they stay well and that a coronavirus vaccine comes soon. “I feel like Hispanic people don’t take this seriously,” she says, “and I wish they would … it’s not a joke.”

habitación en Operation Breakthrough tiene un suministro fresco de pañales, pañuelos desechables, talco, leche, toallitas antibacterianas y toallitas y comida para bebés, ropa y otras necesidades diarias. Ella es Asistente de las Instalaciones. Llega antes de las 6 a.m. de lunes a viernes, lava ropa de cama y ropa sucia, y vacía los basureros. Una vez que llegan los niños, limpia el desorden, recoge artículos y más. Le encanta estar con los niños. Cuando se trata de las precauciones del Covid-19, Leticia dice que Operation Breakthrough es rigurosa. Las habitaciones se limpian y desinfectan con equipos de alta tecnología. Se respetan estrictamente el uso de guantes y máscaras y el distanciamiento social. La inscripción en el centro de educación temprana –con 49 años de antigüedad– está limitada ahora por la pandemia a unos 600 niños. Debido a que ella y su esposo, también en las instalaciones, tienen un hijo con asma y están en contacto con tanta gente, están especialmente atentos, se quitan la ropa de trabajo en el garaje, se duchan y se ponen ropa limpia al llegar a casa. “Doy gracias a Dios que tenemos trabajo De lo contrario, no podríamos mantener a nuestra pequeña familia”, comenta. La nativa bilingüe de la Ciudad de México reza para que se mantengan bien y que pronto llegue una vacuna contra el coronavirus. “Siento que los hispanos no toman esto en serio; y me gustaría que lo hicieran ... no es una broma”, concluye.
