4A Latino soccer star wins national honor

lathe West High School graduate Jony O Muñoz is the first ever Gatorade National E Player of the Year from Kansas or the Kansas City metro. “I would not be who I am, and none of this would be possible if not for God and my parents, friends, teammates and coaches,” Muñoz says. “I owe it all to them.” Having competed with thousands of talented high school soccer players nationwide, Muñoz is now one of 12 finalists for the “most prestigious honor in high school sports – the Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year,” which will be announced this month. Muñoz would be the first soccer player to win the award. The accomplished bilingual forward won national player for his accomplishments on and off the soccer pitch. A panel of sports journalists and soccer experts selected Muñoz from among the other state athletes for his “athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character.” He received the large trophy and banners with his name and the Gatorade logo – in a surprise ceremony in front of his school in June. “They told me I was going to do a video, but when I showed up, my family was there, my church, (TV) camera crews. It was awesome,” Muñoz says. The former Sporting KC Academy member led Olathe West’s soccer team to a 20-1 record and the 2019 Class 6A state championship. As a senior, Muñoz amassed 36 goals and 19 assists. In December, he was named Most Valuable Player of the High School All-American Game. He’s a former member of the U.S. Under-16 Men’s National Team and ended his two-year prep soccer career with 53 goals

Jony plays with a joy and enthusiasm that is contagious.” Brett O’Brien, Gatorade senior vice president and general manager told reporters in June, “There is immense competition for this award with nearly half a million student athletes playing boys soccer, and Jony Muñoz stood above them all.” While also working part-time and volunteering, the son of immigrant parents maintained a 3.97 weighted grade point average. He’s fluent in English and Spanish and is learning French. “Knowing I did well academically in high school will push me to continue it in college,” Muñoz says. He plays guitar in his church’s worship band; led a food drive for the needy; distributes groceries at his church; participates in the youth group; served in his school’s student leadership program; won the Olathe Noon Optimist Club’s community leader award; and last summer, participated in a service mission to Mexico.
