Spanish-language films on the big screen, and there, the quixotic proprietor is cultivating a cultural center. “We have the idea to bring artists, painters, photographers,” Yosmel Serrano tells 2más2KC. “We will present some works from writers; sometimes people come and read what they have written. We have a movie discussion club and a book discussion club.” There’s no charge to attend the meetups, which take place the first and second weekends of the month. (See www.meetup.com/es/Cine-y-Literatura-Hispana-en-Kansas-City/.) An exhibition of paintings by Somali artist, Kosta is in the works, Serrano says. The official grand opening of his movie theater in Kansas City’s Old Northeast, Selva de los Relojes or The Jungle of Clocks was June 1. Serrano opened with Queen of Thursdays, currently showing at the theater through December, alternating with Severo Secreto. “I worked on the film, Queen of Thursdays in post-production,” Serrano says. He earned a degree in film production technologies in Miami. At present, he’s working as an electrician and writing. Serrano is an award-winning poet; Palibrio published La Sagrada Familia, a collection of his poems. It’s available in paperback and e-reader, Nook online from Barnes & Noble. Both films now showing are documentaries with Cuban subjects. Both are independent films in Spanish with English subtitles. Queen of Thursdays examines the life of former prima ballerina Rosario Suárez. Severo Secreto tells the story of the late writer, Severo Sarduy. “Right now I’m focused on independent films, mostly documentaries that can educate people on Latin America and Spain, their issues and cultures, but I will embrace and show all Spanish-language films,” he says.” He plans to expand future offerings and welcomes patron suggestions. A year ago, the building on the northeast corner of St. John and North Askew avenues was an empty shell. For Serrano, the location was ideal for Selva de los Relojes, and as a visionary he recognized the building’s potential.

Beginning last December, he began the makeover, putting in new floors, building walls and control tower, installing movie screen, seats and projector system and setting up speakers. “I basically rebuilt the inside,” he says, adding, “It’s still a work in progress.” Selva de los Relojes is perfectly located in Old Northeast. “It was the stopping point for every wave of immigrants that have come through,” according to Nancy Kwilas, an area civic leader. Selva de los Relojes has a full concession stand selling the usual cinema snacks and drinks with occasional specials. This month, it’s an order of free popcorn with purchase of a ticket. Admission is $6-$8, and student discounts and group rates are available. The ticket office accepts cash and credit card payments. Serrano is encouraged by the intense interest in Latin American cultures and Spanish-language films and by the excited amazement of Kansas Citians at “the quality of art produced in Latin America.” So far, they’ve comprised most of his moviegoers. “It surprises me happily that so many are interested in learning more about Latin cultures,” he says. Serrano came to the U.S. from his birthplace, Camaguey, Cuba on his 35th birthday. In 2015, he visited Kansas City and fell in love with the Midwest. He relocated in 2017. “After two years here, I could tell you that I could probably stay forever,” he says. Selva de los Relojes isn’t a commercial venture. Rather, it’s a project “to bring people things that they can be proud of, something that all the community will enjoy, something the Hispanic community can embrace.” He plans to show 10-15 movies a year. “The culture that everybody left behind is important to integrate into United States society,” Serrano says. “That’s what’s made this place so amazing.”

Selva de los Relojes está perfectamente ubicado en Old Northeast. “Fue el punto de parada para cada ola de inmigrantes que han pasado”, según Nancy Kwilas, una líder cívica del área. Selva de los Relojes tiene un puesto de comida completo, que vende botanas y bebidas habituales del cine; con especiales ocasionalmente. Este mes, es una orden de palomitas gratis con la compra de un boleto. La entrada cuesta $6 a $8, y hay descuentos para estudiantes y tarifas grupales disponibles. La taquilla acepta pagos en efectivo y con tarjeta de crédito. Yosmel se siente alentado por el intenso interés en las culturas latinoamericanas y las películas en español; y por el asombroso entusiasmo de los ciudadanos de Kansas por “la calidad del arte producido en América Latina”. Hasta ahora, han conformado a la mayoría de sus cinéfilos. “Me sorprende felizmente que tantos estén interesados en aprender más sobre las culturas latinas”. Yosmel llegó a EE.UU. desde su lugar natal, Camagüey, Cuba, en su cumpleaños 35. En 2015, visitó Kansas City y se enamoró del Medio Oeste. Se mudó en 2017. “Después de dos años aquí, podría decirte que probablemente podría quedarme para siempre”. Selva de los Relojes no es una empresa comercial. Más bien, es un proyecto “para traer a las personas cosas de las que puedan estar orgullosas, algo de lo que toda la comunidad disfrutará, algo que la comunidad hispana puede acoger”. Él planea mostrar 10-15 películas al año. “La cultura que todos dejan atrás es importante para integrarse a la sociedad estadounidense. Eso es lo que ha hecho a este lugar tan increíble”, concluyó.
