iguel “Angel” Reyes broke into M performing arts relatively late, but he’s more than made up for lost time.
The Turner High School senior who was hooked on music just four years ago qualified this summer for the finals in the 10th annual KC SuperStar talent competition. It was his second musical triumph in less than a year. Last October, Reyes won first male place in the La Voz KC contest. He was one of 263 teenage singers who registered for KC SuperStar auditions held in March. The three-round contest produced by The J (Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City) is similar to NBC’s TV talent competition, The Voice. Contestants competed for scholarships of $100 up to $10,000 for the first-place winner, which can be used for post-secondary education or “lessons to further their musical career,” says Felice Azorsky, The J’s events manager. Throughout the summer, Reyes and nine other finalists selected in the June 3 semifinals took part in rigorous preparation. They trained with vocal and performance coaches under the tutelage of professional singers and worked with lighting and sound experts. “The competition is not only about competing or winning, but about growing as a performer and as a person,” the show’s director and executive producer, Tammy Ruder told 2mas2KC. For the qualifying auditions, Reyes performed Unchained Melody and La Barca. “Finding something that fit the more ‘Top 40’ style of KC SuperStar was a challenge,” Ruder says. “Miguel sings with

In the end, we were able to find a song that he could sing in both English and Spanish, staying true to his roots.” Advancing to the second-round semifinals, he sang Bésame Mucho, and competing in the finals on August 25 at Johnson County Community College’s Yardley Hall, Reyes performed When We Were Young. It was Reyes’s mother, Maria Belmonte who learned about KC SuperStar and encouraged her middle child to register for the preliminary auditions. “I’m very fortunate to have parents who help me,” Reyes says. Since being turned on to music at age 13 singing with his church youth choir, Reyes has acquired a bass, guitar and piano thanks to his parents, Maria and dad, Rafael Reyes. Guided by instructional Internet videos, the budding tenor/ musician taught himself to read music and play the instruments. “I have a passion for playing,” he says. He discovered that studying music might be hard at first, “but with determination and hard work, anything is possible.” Besides maintaining a 3.7 GPA and practicing at every opportunity, Reyes sings with the chamber choir and chorale at Turner and a mariachi band and occasionally sings or plays at church fundraisers. He participates in the Upward Bound math and science program and 20/20 Leadership program. After graduation next spring, he’ll leave for basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He’s grateful for the love and support he’s received and says, “I’m immensely happy with everything that I’ve been able to accomplish with the help of all my friends and family.”

Después de graduarse la próxima primavera, se irá a un entrenamiento básico en el Centro de Entrenamiento Naval de Great Lakes.
