Some of the art will be for sale. “You’ll see everything from drawings, fine craft (clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood), mixed media, paintings, photography, printing and sculptures,” Muñoz says. “We’ll even have someone doing a mural with spray paint.” The owners of 80-plus lowriders and custom cars from as far away as Minnesota, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas will show off their specialty vehicles. “The festival has one of the largest lowrider car shows in Kansas City,” Muñoz says. Festivalgoers “will be blown away by their art on metal masterpieces.” Besides the souped-up automobiles with flashy, elaborate paint jobs, hydraulic suspension and bedazzling chrome, custom car enthusiasts will be treated to a hop contest. Entrants will compete for a $500 prize. “Car club brothers,” John Shatto and Aaron Muñoz, Deanna’s husband and “custom car artist” are the official judges. For hungry and thirsty visitors, La Placita will serve Mexican and Central American festival foods and bottled water and other beverages. Festivalgoers can also purchase popcorn and cotton candy. Commercial vendors and nonprofit organizations will have merchandise and information booths. Merchants will sell candles and candle warmers, decorative pots, jewelry, T-shirts and more. A voter registration table, the KCK Public Library, El Centro, the Girl Scouts and the Kansas City Center for Inclusion will be there. The festival, rain or shine runs 1-6 pm. Be prepared to pay for art, merchandise and food in cash; few, if any merchants and vendors will be able to process credit card payments. Alcoholic beverages aren’t allowed onsite. “The festival is a beautiful event focused on the many artistic talents of artists who are part of our KCK and KCMO communities,” Muñoz says. “Please come and immerse yourselves in their art and support them.”
