Harry S. Truman Library and MuE TJulyheseum will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, 22 for a $25 million makeover. It’s
offering free admission July 20, 21 and 22. The 62 year-old presidential library will reopen in late summer or early fall of 2020, in honor of the 75th anniversary of Truman’s presidency. “The scope and scale is enormous. We wanted to transform the library and bring it into the 21st century,” says library director, Kurt Graham. “It’s the biggest single renovation, expansion and reimagining since Harry Truman cut the ribbon in 1957.” When it reopens with a 3,000 square-foot addition, the entrance and lobby will be on the building’s east side. A floor-to-ceiling glass façade with frosted presidential seal will offer unobstructed views of the courtyard and path to Truman’s gravesite and “working office.” Features of the new larger lobby will be a one-stop admission and information desk, more spacious museum store and restrooms, and public space for receptions and after-hours private events. Display monitors will publicize upcoming events and programs. The reimagined first floor featuring permanent “state-of-the-art” interactive exhibits will combine displays recounting Truman’s life and career, currently divided between two floors. “It will tell stories in a way never told before,” Graham says. “It’s a signature feature that people will remember.” The lower floor, which now displays memorabilia chronicling Truman’s early life, will be renovated to include two new galleries, which can be combined for larger traveling exhibits. One gallery, equipped with audiovisual and technology capabilities will serve as classroom, programming and event space. The second will display the museum collection’s automobiles and rotating exhibits of newly acquired or rarely seen objects. “We have about 16 million pages of ma-
