local group shares the mission of National Down Syndrome Awareness Month observed each October since 1984. Amigos Latinos celebrates the abilities and contributions of people with Down syndrome, supports caregivers, promotes inclusion, provides resources, and educates and heightens awareness about the chromosomal condition, which affects about one in every 700 babies born in the U.S. “At Amigos Latinos, we let Hispanic families know they’re not alone,” says Yadira Murguía. “There are resources in Spanish and help. Families can talk to someone in their own language who understands their kids’ needs because we’re going through the same thing.” Murguía is a founding member of Amigos Latinos. With the sponsorship of the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City (DSG), she and three Spanish-speaking friends organized the group in 2010. “We were always going to DSG conferences, but we were four Hispanic parents in this big group needing a translator,” Murguía says. “The Down Syndrome Guild was missing a Spanish-speaking group so they gave us the facility and information to start the group.” While membership has grown, Amigos Latinos seeks to reach more Hispanic families with children with Down syndrome. “We really want to get the word out,” Murguía says. “We go to hospitals with gifts for babies born with Down syndrome and information if parents want to continue with our group and DSG.” Amigos Latinos meet monthly at DSG in Mission, Kan. They invite guest
