The 38th annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival opens Friday night and runs through Sunday; the eclipse occurs on Monday. The family-friendly festival has become one of the largest of its kind in the nation. It’s an extravagantly fun and colorful tribute to Kansas City’s multiethnic past and present. “To be invited to participate and share the beauty of where you were born or where your ancestors were born is a true blessing,” says Rose Marie Mendez. A longtime member of the festival commission, past chair and current executive committeewoman, Mendez will again have a booth, and her Fiesta Mexicana Dancers will perform. In booth number 1, she’ll be serving tacos, enchiladas, tamales, nachos, taco salad and burritos. On Friday night, 25 to 30 students of Rose Marie’s Fiesta Mexicana Folklorico Dance School, ages seven to 33 will take the stage. Known for Mexican folklore, they’re presenting dances from Sinaloa and Chiapas and indigenous dances from Nayarit. “We’ll go from region to region, and everyone will be wearing the very colorful traditional dance costume of each region,” says Mendez who celebrated the golden anniversary of her dance school two years ago. Her dancers have performed in the festival for the past 32 years. They will close their recital with a Jalisco rendition of the Mexican hat dance. On Sunday, the dancers will join other groups on the runway parading their native costumes in the fashion show. The festival fills Swope Park with an tantalizingly exotic panoply of scents, sounds and tastes from across the globe. The event is the culmination of months of tireless planning and organizing by the Ethnic Enrichment Festival executive committee and commissioners with the cooperation of the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department. “There’s lots of sweating by the commissioners and the talent and workmanship of the park employees with us getting ready to enhance the many cultures in Swope Park,” Mendez says. The festival is held during the third full week of August near the park’s historic front entrance at Swope Parkway and East Meyer Boulevard. It’s meant to draw together people of different cultures to learn from and celebrate the resonate multiculturalism of the Kansas City area. The event is wheelchair and walker accessible. There’s space under the pavilion with a good view of the stage for wheelchair seating; wide, obstacle-free paths; clearly identified wheelchair parking; and ADA-compliant restrooms. “We pride ourselves on accommodating everyone,” says Jim Wilson, 2017 festival manager. Admission is $5 per person, ages 12 and up. Parking is free. There will be 42 food stalls selling an intoxicating smorgasbord of mouthwatering native dishes. “It’s the aroma and taste of the world,” Mendez says. Kids’ World offers activities to entertain children. There will be a full stage lineup of music and dancing under the pavilion by 36 groups representing 32 countries, the state of Hawaii, American Indians and African Americans and a market bazaar retailing internationally eclectic goods. “Musicians, singers and dancers will entertain every 20 or 30 minutes,” Mendez says, “and it’s the best place to come Christmas shopping.” Editor’s Note: See ad on page 7 for more information.

Hay espacio debajo del pabellón con una buena vista del escenario para sillas de ruedas; senderos anchos y sin obstáculos; estacionamiento para discapacitados claramente identificado; y baños compatibles con la ADA. “Nos enorgullecemos de acomodar a todos”, indica Jim Wilson, Gerente del festival 2017. La entrada cuesta $5 por persona, a partir de los 12 años. El estacionamiento es gratuito.
