March 1, began one of the most important TriteshisLent,ofWednesday, the Catholic Church. This is the preparation stage for the Holy Week, and it lasts 40 days, in memory of the time Jesus spent in the desert praying and meditating. The feast of Easter is celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere. Lent is for Catholics a period of fasting, almsgiving and prayer. Some of the most important dates of this year are: Ash Wednesday Since Sundays are excluded from this period of penance, the entrance of Lent takes place on the Wednesday before the first Sunday of Lent. On this day the priest traces a cross with ashes on the forehead of each believer, saying: “ Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” Palm Sunday (April 9): It’s the Sunday before Easter Sunday, Christians commemorate the entrance of Jesus to Jerusalem. The faithful gather before the Mass carrying olive branches, laurel or palms according to the area, to be blessed; and later enter in procession to the church to hear the Gospel of the Passion. Holy Thursday (April 13): At the evening mass, the last supper that Jesus shared with his apostles is commemorated. That night Jesus washed his disciples’ feet and then took bread and wine and gave thanks, instituting the sacrament of the Eucharist. In many churches the rite of the lavatory of the feet is realized. Good Friday (April 14): It’s the day in which Christ dies on the cross. Betrayed by Judas and abandoned by Peter, he is arrested and

Ésta es una etapa de preparación para la Pascua que dura 40 días, en recuerdo del tiempo que pasó Jesús en el desierto rezando y meditando. La fiesta de Pascua se celebra el domingo siguiente a la primera luna llena tras el equinoccio de primavera en el hemisferio norte. La cuaresma supone para los católicos un período de ayuno, limosna y oración (ALO). Algunas de las fechas más importantes de este año son: Miércoles de Ceniza Como los domingos están excluidos de este período de penitencia, la entrada de la Cuaresma se realiza el miércoles anterior al primer domingo de Cuaresma. En este día el sacerdote traza una cruz con ceniza en la frente de cada fiel diciéndole: “Conviértete y cree en el Evangelio”. Domingo de Ramos (9 de abril): Es el domingo anterior a la Pascua, los cristianos conmemoran la entrada de Jesús a Jerusalén. Los fieles se reúnen antes de la misa llevando ramos de olivo, laurel o palmas según la zona, para ser bendecidas; y posteriormente entran en procesión a la iglesia para escuchar el Evangelio de la Pasión. Jueves Santo (13 de abril): En la misa de la tarde se conmemora la última cena que Jesús compartió con sus apóstoles. Esa noche, Jesús lavó los pies a sus discípulos y luego tomó el pan y el vino y dio gracias, instituyendo así el sacramento de la Eucaristía. Holy Saturday (April 15): Commonly known as the Sabbath of Glory, it’s a day of silence and seclusion in which one meditates on the death of Christ on the cross and its placement in the tomb. At night the Easter Vigil begins, celebrating the passage of darkness into the light, the victory of Christ over death. Easter or Resurrection Sunday (April 16): It’s the central feast of the Christian liturgical calendar. It marks the fulfillment of the promises made by God to his people: “Christ has risen!” It’s celebrated with a solemn mass and the clergy wear white or gold, symbol of joy and light. Pope Francis sent a message reminding the faithful that Lent is a propitious time to intensify the life of the spirit through the holy means that the Church offers us: fasting, almsgiving and prayer. “In this time we always receive a strong call to conversion: the Christian is called to return to God ‘with all his heart’, not to be content with a mediocre life, but to grow in friendship with the Lord,” said the Holy Father.

Sábado Santo (15 de abril): Conocido comúnmente como Sábado de Gloria, es un día de silencio y recogimiento en el que se medita sobre la muerte de Cristo en la cruz y su colocación en el sepulcro. Por la noche empieza la Vigilia Pascual, celebrando el paso de las tinieblas a la luz, la victoria de Cristo sobre la muerte. Domingo de Pascua o Resurrección (16 de abril): Es la fiesta central del calendario litúrgico cristiano. Es el cumplimiento de las promesas realizadas por Dios a su pueblo: “¡Cristo ha resucitado!” Se celebra con una misa solemne y el clero se viste de blanco o de oro, símbolo de alegría y de luz. El Papa Francisco envió un mensaje recordando a los fieles que la Cuaresma es un tiempo propicio para intensificar la vida del espíritu a través de los medios santos que la Iglesia nos ofrece: el ayuno, la limosna y la oración. “En este tiempo recibimos siempre una fuerte llamada a la conversión: el cristiano está llamado a volver a Dios ‘de todo corazón’, a no contentarse con una vida mediocre, sino a crecer en la amistad con el Señor”, afirmó el Santo Padre.
