WE’ E HAD A RUNNIN START TO THE YEAR AND CAN’T SEE THIN S SLOWIN DOWN ANY TIME SOON. I have spent plenty of time these last three months recruiting for new people, the most notable is a replacement for our recently departed Sales Manager Heath Donaldson, who is heading off around the world on a year long voyage. We’re sad to see Heath go, but we do wish him well on his “once in a lifetime opportunity”.

As the saying goes, one door closes and another opens, so we are excited to welcome our new sales department head Carlos Carneiro. It will take Carlos some time to get acquainted with our broad client base, extensive product diversity and the intricacies of the en ecosystem but I’m sure it wont be long until he brings his own style and experience to the company. Further to that we’ve made some other key additions to our brand and marketing departments.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of Tim Leatherman invention, the Leatherman Tool. We are expecting Tim to come to Australia later this year and we will certainly let you know of the events we are planning closer to the dates. To celebrate, Leatherman have rebuilt, by hand, the original Pocket Survival Tool (PST). Numbers are limited to 500 for Australia and you will also notice several other developments within the Leatherman brand over the three months and through the rest of 2018. Stay tuned to see more with Tim and his down under tour.

e are excited to announce a new partnership here in Australia between Klean Kanteen and Social Foundry. Klean Kanteen is a family-owned company on a mission to reduce single use plastics since 2004. One of the ways we deliver on our mission is to partner with businesses to assist them in reducing their single-use waste. Our latest partnership is multifaceted in that we’re not only reducing single-use waste, but also mentoring and empowering at-risk young australians through the work of Social Foundry.

After purchasing an abandoned retro petrol station and creating a beautiful space in the heart of regional Victoria, their newest hospitality project located at 86 Mollison Street, Kyneton will not only give good back to disadvantaged young people, but will serve up great food and coffee with lots more in the pipeline. There’s vision to host community bbq’s, moonlight cinemas, food vans, community events and lots more. Social Foundry are creating a community environment

No single event leads someone to acts of crime, questionable activity or behaviour, but rather an array of social environments and crises. Social Foundry not only recognise this, but want to play a redeeming part in creating new social environments and events for people to learn, love and live in.

Their continued interest and investment into the coffee and hospitality scene has seen many exciting things take place.

With this partnership we are creating a mentoring workplace that provides new opportunities for those with limited opportunity and to make space for the many strengths within lives that have been affected by serious disadvantage.

Our partnership with Social Foundry now ensures that single use coffee cup wastage is reduced by introducing our range of Insulated Tumblers.

JUSTIN WALKER DEPUTY EDITOR: 4 x 4 MAGAZINE The not-so-humble smartphone has graduated from just a communication device to a device that can be used for conversation, photography, filming and navigation (both in and outside your vehicle). When you are driving to work, that campsite, or off on that long-planned mountain biking adventure, your phone is your link back to home and also a great navigation aid. However, securing your phone somewhere in your vehicle where it is both easily accessed – and easy to see – continues to be a slight problem. Nite Ize has been a company renowned for solving these ‘practical’ problems for many years so it s no surprise that they ve produced the Steelie Windshield Mount it, reducing the ‘where to put the phone’ problem to a non-issue, thanks mainly to the mount’s clever design.

The Steelie Windshield Mount Kit comprises a windshield mount and the Steelie Magnetic Phone Socket Plus. The Socket Plus is a strong magnet housed inside a silicon centre that is attached to your phone’s back or case. The Windshield Mount itself includes a robust aluminium arm and suspended Steelie ball design, which

allows for very easy rotation of the phone, optimising the view for either the driver or the passenger/navigator. The windshield mount also includes a patented suction cup design that Nite Ize claims offers ‘ultimate holding power’. This claim has been borne out during testing, where I have not gone overboard, but I made sure I subjected the unit to plenty of twisting, turning, attaching detaching, all with the aim of seeing if the unit still holds its structural integrity and versatility. And it did.

The Magnetic Phone Socket Plus is attached to your phone case via 3M VHB foam adhesive which means it is solidly attached and able to withstand plenty of twisting and moving without falling apart (you can, though, still remove the adhesive if need be). The ability to rotate the phone between a vertical and horizontal orientation is great – especially when navigating off-road where, often, you may prefer one orientation for particular routes. The neodymium magnet is strong in its attachment while also providing smooth movement and rotation when you’re adjusting your phone’s view or removing it from the mount itself.

When I first started testing the kit I had some doubts as to the structural integrity – and durability – of the adjustable arm. The arm itself is relatively long and even though it is wide I still was concerned as to how it would stand up after a month of being

twisted and pushed/pulled. Impressively, this integral component didn’t budge, it just copped whatever torsional force it was subjected to and kept on moving through its range with no loosening of the pivot point or any signs of structural failure. or something that looks so ‘simple’ the Steelie Windshield Mount Kit packs in plenty of small design features that help it keep on doing the job it was made for, regardless of the treatment by ham-fisted owners. The magnetic attachment system is clever and allows for a very smooth operation, while the overall build quality for something that looks a touch fragile is the exact opposite: it is very tough. Nite Ize does note the fact you cannot pit the magnet anywhere near credit cards, pacemakers or portable hard drives, but it has no affect whatsoever on your smartphone.

KEVIN RUTHERFORD - CEO OF HYDRATION TABLET BRAND NUUN, RECENTLY TOOK SOME TIME OUT FROM HIS BUSY SCHEDULE TO ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS ROLE AT THE COMPANY, THEIR FUTURE GOALS AND NUUN'S SPONSORSHIP OF THE CITY 2 SURF. Tell us about your beginnings with the company - what interested you the most about working with Nuun?

What's been the most challenging part of you role thus far? What's been the best part?

It’s coming up on 5 years since I had the privilege of joining the Nuuniverse. There were many things that intrigued me about coming into this company as the team’s CEO, but these three reasons were the draw at the time:

Let me first start with the best part because it’s what I’m most proud of at Nuun. I have never been more proud of being on a team as I am right now being on team Nuun. The magnetic energy and positivity of this team is remarkable. This tribe is so committed to our mission and bringing an energy giving attitude that they lift everyone up that they touch. If you are at an event and see the Nuun team, go visit them. You will walk away more energised than you were before you approached them.

1) The science behind the product performance: Nuun changed the game over a decade ago by being the first sport nutrition company to separate hydration from fuel. The move was based on science and research led by our friend and partner Dr. Stacy Sims. This was a game changer for all athletes competing in sport.

2) Nuun’s loyal users: to this day, Nuun’s fans are fanatical about the brand, the product and the team. The most powerful brands in the world have this type of following at its core, so I saw this a foundational platform for Nuun to build on.

The biggest challenge is prioritizing all of the opportunities in front of us, and in turn, keeping the team focused on the highest impact initiatives.

With growth and momentum, new opportunities across the organisation are abundant. However, the most successful teams focus on a few things and do them exceptionally well and consistently over time.

How did you come up with / fine-tune your products?

3) The potential of creating massive change by using business for good: Nuun started with the success by targeting and connecting with the toughest critics – the athlete. So imagine leveraging our strengths to make positive change beyond the endurance athlete to include those that desire a way to get healthier. Nuun can, and hopefully will, be that brand to change the lives of many for the better.

To be fair, I didn’t come with the magic recipe of Nuun. That was entirely our nutritionist and innovation team. My role was to get the team to rethink what was possible and challenge our nutritional philosophy. The question we use for all of our product improvements and innovation is “if we had to start all over again, how would we do it”. This prevents us from being complacent. This forces us to raise our game over and over again. I guess this is the best strategy to never let your competition catch up to you. Just keep moving, much like our mission of ‘inspiring everyone to move more’.

Why is your product awesome? What makes it different to other products in the marketplace?

The first thing is ‘what it is’ – Nuun stands for ‘NUtrition UNcompromised’.

We make our product to work with your body so you feel the difference. We don’t add fillers. Every single ingredient has a purpose to work with your body.

Secondly, it’s ‘how we source our ingredients’. We search for the cleanest and highest quality ingredients possible. Then to increase the consumer confidence in our quality we use third parties to validate (certify) our work – like glutenfree, vegan, safe for sport, and non-GMO. Lastly, it’s ‘why’ we do what we do. Our mission is to inspire everyone to move more. Our philosophy to make that a reality revolves around ‘living clean’ through ‘clean products’, creating a ‘clean planet’, and changing the conversation for athletics through ‘clean sport’ initiatives. This philosophy touches people beyond the hydration tablets and that ultimately creates loyalty beyond the competitive set. In essence, people resonate with businesses that focus on ‘doing well by doing good’.

What's your big dream for Nuun?

At Nuun, we dream of a world where everyone embraces movement and hydration as key catalysts for optimal health and performance. If we can change behavior at massive scale in these two areas then we will help create a healthier society and reduce many preventable diseases. It’s a long journey but this brings the stoke to the team at nuun every single day.

How do you come up with the different flavours for Nuun?

What’s your personal favourite?

That saying of you can’t pick a favorite child does hold true for me when it comes to picking a favourite flavour. With that said, my go to flavour is Strawberry Lemonade. Personally, I think Fruit Punch is amazing as well. I think it’s our ‘most underrated flavour’ at Nuun. As for picking new flavours, we watch consumer trends across many different categories. Our development team will create prototypes and get consumers to try them through our consumer research.

I think we are due for a new flavour. Any ideas for us?

What did you think of Harry Summers winning the Sydney City2Surf in his Nuun shirt?

Could we have been any luckier than to be the hydration sponsor on this fabulous course and to have Harry be the winner? I think not. I don’t think Hollywood could have scripted it any better for Nuun. Harry is one very fast runner and we are stoked that he loves Nuun as much as we love him right back.

Your headquarters are based in Seattle, WA. What do you love most about the area and how do you enjoy your weekends?

For those of you that haven’t been to Seattle, you should know that it is a trail runner’s paradise. There are endless trails through the forests. It is so green and lush with moderate temperatures for most of the year - it really is an endurance athlete’s dream. On weekends, I’m either training for triathlons, or taking advantage of the hiking with my wife and two dogs.

Any plans to visit Australia in the near future?

No confirmed plans to visit Australia in the coming months but I do hope to get down under at the end of 2018 or in early 2019. Sadly, I have never been and I have always wanted to go. I’m a Canadian and I get the sense the cultures have many similarities. Perhaps I should strive to drink some Nuun on course at the next City to Surf race. Sound like a good plan?

2018 REPRESENTS THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LEATHERMAN TOOL GROUP

T

he history of Leatherman started when Tim Leatherman and his wife Chau went to Europe in the 1970’s on a budget trip. They purchased an old Fiat 600 car and embarked on their “what are we going to do with the rest of our life trip”. As with many old cars they broke down from time to time but seemed like this Fiat broke down every other day. With Tim being a mechanical engineer, most breakdowns where easily fixed as he had some rudimentary tools with him on the journey. It was on this trip that Tim had the idea of inventing a product that was a combination of basic tools, pliers and pocket knife and so the idea was born!

On their return to Portland, Tim asked his wife if she would support them while he worked on the invention. She did and then it took 3 years to get a suitable example to try and sell the design, Tim was rejected time and time again from various tool and knife companies all across America. So he couldn’t sell the design and if the product was to live he’d have to build it himself. In the May of 1983, the Leatherman company was officially born, with the first order of 500 “PST" multi-tools being sold to American outdoor retailer chain Cabelas. They featured the innovative product on the back page of their catalogue and kick started a meteoric rise for the Portland based Leatherman Tool Group.

Keep in mind that this process took 8 long years from idea to first order!

2018 marks the 35th Anniversary of the Leatherman Tool group and to commemorate this impressive milestone they've released the Limited Edition PST (pocket Survival Tool) based on Tim's original design. Leatherman remade all the tooling and have had a couple of their best engineers remake The Original by hand.

We’ve got 500pcs available, in stock right now, for immediate dispatch and all feature Tim’s signature on the handle.

Tim Leatherman will be coming to Australia later this year, and we’ll arrange for a variety of events closer to the time.

Primus PrimeTech 2.3L Stove Set

JUSTIN WALKER DEPUTY EDITOR: 4 x 4 MAGAZINE When you’re on that overnight or multiday trek, nothing beats a nice cooked meal at the end of each day’s hiking. This, of course, means carrying a camp stove – and preferably one that is more than just a water-boiler in terms of its overall performance. Boilin-the-bag meals are fine occasionally you want a more creative (read: tasty) culinary experience, which means using a larger pot and having a stove that allows fine heat control (for simmering), frugal fuel usage and consistent output and performance.

Primus has been around for many, many years, and produces a number of highly regarded camp stoves, gas cookers and much more. The company’s new PrimeTech stove set is aimed at providing the best all-in-one camp cooking experience you can get and does so with some unique features.

The PrimeTech comprises a cleverly integrated burner in the

windscreen base, a fantastic idea that solves that problem of wind affecting stove output/flame control. Setup is straightforward and the pot nestles securely on top of the burner, inside the windscreen base, then you just ignite it via the piezo tool and away you go.

The performance during testing has been excellent; the fact the windscreen does its job so well is one reason for this, but equally – if not more – it has been the stove’s ease of flame adjustment (from full-bore to barely noticeable) that has seen this stove crank out meal after meal. The secret to the stove’s ability to offer such fine head adjustment (perfect for slow-burn or simmering-based cooking) is its regulated valve. This valve ensures the fuel output is consistent throughout the life of the fuel canister used. Speaking of which, I have been pleasantly surprised as to the excellent fuel consumption of the PrimeTech. Whether it is has been windy or cold, the fuel delivery via this valve setup has been very reliable in terms of output.

The stove set’s 2.3-litre pot also aids performance, thanks to the heat exchanger built in the stove base, with Primus claiming up to half the fuel consumption rate of a ‘regular’ canister stove. This is hard to confirm without controlled testing but I can say that during the test period (and when compared to other stoves tested in a similar way) I have certainly found the canister to remain more full after the time on test. There are actually two pots in the set – the aforementioned 2.3L and another solid-base pot. Both pots are built tough too; hard-anodised aluminium and a ceramic non-stick coating make these things both durable and a dream to cook with and clean.

Also included in the stove set is a piezo ignitor and one of Primus’s excellent pot grips, complete with a lock-button, ensuring it stays closed until needed and doesn’t flop around. The pot lid’s inbuilt

emphasise the amount of time and considerable thought that has gone into the design of this set.

WHAT DO YOU DO AT ZEN? I’m Zen Import's Logistics Coordinator and handle the shipments and forwarding arrangements from our suppliers right through to bringing the product into Zen’s warehouse.

My job involves sourcing the best freight arrangement to achieve an efficient and smooth arrival of goods and I work closely with forwarders and suppliers to achieve this.

WHAT DO YOU DO AT ZEN? I'm the Key Business Manager at Zen, which means I look after all of our major accounts around Australia.

WHICH ZEN PRODUCT IS YOUR FAVOURITE AT THE MOMENT? Anything Nite Ize. They make so many handy products that it's too hard to pick a favourite, but I can tell you that every single cable in my living room and garage has a Gear Tie wrapped around it!

To go skydiving, travel around Europe and go diving with sharks (as long as there's a cage).

WHAT’S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU’VE EVER DONE? I kayaked into a grotto in Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay area and it was filled with bats! I'm not a fan of flying things at the best of times so it was quite scary, but the sea monkeys on the other side were worth it.

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL WEEKEND?

WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX? I love taking my boat out with the kids for a day of fishing on the Hawkesbury river.

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL WEEKEND? A tropical island resort holiday with my family. I'd charter a fishing boat for the day, followed by drinks at the pool bar in the afternoon, then a nice seafood dinner and cap it all off watching the footy on TV. Actually, forget the weekend - I'm gonna spend the whole week there.

A day in and around Sydney Harbour, lunch, a theatre performance or gallery visit, a nice walk or two and time to cook a delicious meal for family or friends.
