Battle Against PFCs A Pioneering Journey Towards Sustainability IN THE WORLD of outdoor gear and apparel, Fjällräven stands as a beacon of responsible environmental stewardship.

Long before the recent wave of legislative bans on polyfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in places like California and Europe, Fjällräven had been saying "no" to these harmful chemicals since 2009.

Their unwavering commitment to nature and sustainability has led them down a path of innovation and leadership that sets them apart in the industry.

The PFC story began in the 1950s when these compounds, known for their durable water repellent (DWR) properties, revolutionised the textile industry.

From t-shirts to tents, PFCs found their way into a wide range of products, promising to keep fabrics moisture, grease, and dirt-free. However, as time passed, the environmental consequences became evident. PFCs leached into water sources, contaminated soil, and even pervaded the air, affecting everything from aquatic life to human health. Studies revealed their potential to disrupt immune systems, hormones, and even alter DNA.

Donna Bruns, Fjällräven's Global Product Director, recalls her shock when she learned about the extent of PFC contamination.

"They were in everything. They were everywhere," she laments.

Realising the urgency of the situation, Fjällräven's leadership, including CEO Martin Axelhed, swiftly decided that PFCs had to be eliminated from their products.

The journey to remove PFCs was arduous and involved meticulous examination of every component in their supply chain.

Many partners were initially puzzled by this shift, as other brands had yet to address the issue. Nevertheless, Fjällräven persevered, gradually phasing out PFCs from all their products, from apparel to zippers.

While the removal of PFCs posed challenges, Fjällräven did not stop there. They embarked on an ambitious project to create a proprietary material, Eco-Shell, entirely free of PFCs. This eco-friendly alternative maintained the water-repellent functionality of their products while reducing the environmental impact. The durability of their PFC-free DWR required more

regular reapplication, marking a pioneering move toward shared responsibility between the brand and the consumer.

In 2023, as legislation catches up with environmental concerns, Fjällräven stands ahead of the curve. Places like Europe and California are set to ban PFCs in 2025, but for Fjällräven, this journey has always been driven by values, not legislation. Donna Bruns succinctly captures their ethos: "If something is the right thing to do, you do it."

Fjällräven's unwavering commitment to nature, sustainability, and innovation has positioned them as pioneers in the outdoor industry. Their journey to eliminate PFCs since 2009 demonstrates that taking a stand for the environment isn't just a trend; it's a responsibility. As we move toward a future where sustainable practices are not just a choice but a necessity, Fjällräven remains an inspiring example of how businesses can lead the way in saying "no" to harmful chemicals and "yes" to a greener, more responsible future.

Even amidst economic downturns, consumers often seek solace in premium brands, viewing them as affordable indulgences.

This consumer behaviour acts as a cushion for premium brands, enabling them to maintain a strong customer base and grow once good times return. The intrinsic value and consumer perception that premium brands carry, make

them a reliable choice, thus keeping the cash registers ringing and the POS machines beeping for retailers.

Data from Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore further affirm this reality. In Australia,

the total value of the top 100 brands rose significantly in the last financial year (FY22/23 AU), showcasing the resilience and appeal of premium brands. New Zealand saw a similar trend, where strong brand reputation provided an 'extra layer of immunity' during economic downturns. In Singapore, post-pandemic, many valuable brands witnessed doubledigit percentage growth in their brand values and thus exposure, signifying the continuous allure of premium brands even in tough economic landscapes.

International food day lunch

Describe an interesting hobby or pastime that you have.

I’ve been collecting vinyl records for over 10 years and love finding unique and rare records. My favourite genre is Krautrock.

What is the best thing that has happened to you this year?

As a big sports fan the best things so far to have happened are the Panthers making it to the NRL grand final and visiting the MCG for the first time to watch the AFL.

What’s your favourite Brand or product at Zen and why?

The Fjallraven Vardag Lite Padded Jacket is definitely my favourite as It fits with my style and I can wear it to the snow.

I think the OzHarvest day was a lot of fun. I enjoy cooking a fair bit so being able to get from behind the computer for a day and cook for a good cause is always a bonus.
