Welcome to 2018!!!

I’M WRITING THIS IN 2017, JUST BEFORE WE HEAD OFF ON A SMALL BREAK TO ENJOY THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. The year just gone has been as fast paced as ever, with several major accomplishments being executed along the way. We’ve seen massive updates and additions to the way we manage our distribution centre, we’ve hired more great people and we’ve added loads of new products. It’s been a fun journey the last 12 months and I am excited to head into 2018 with a fresh start and an abundance of energy.

Please take some time to look through the magazine and take note of some of the big updates from Klean Kanteen. Also, I am really excited that we’ve been selected to represent Primus, the legendary Swedish outdoor company. Please take the time to read the special feature on Primus and understand the historical and now future position for Primus. We know it’s going to be a great brand here in Australia!

THE ZEN TEAM HITS THE TREKKING TRAIL WITH THE FJÄLLRÄVEN HONG KONG CLASSIC

he Fjällräven Classic concept is simple: to encourage more people to get out and enjoy nature. To show that with the right safety precautions and resources anyone can thrive for days in the wilderness, no matter their level of experience.

The inaugural Fjällräven Classic was held in 2005 in Sweden by the company’s founder Åke Nordin. Since then it has become the largest trekking event in Scandinavia, drawing a crowd of over 2000 international trekkers each year to experience the vast Swedish wilderness. Today, there are a total of four Classics held around the world – United States, Denmark and Sweden with this year marking the launch of the Hong Kong edition, bringing this once in a lifetime Fjällräven experience a little closer to home for us Aussies.

We arrived in humid Hong Kong with uncertain expectations. A place known for its immense skyline, busy harbour and sprawling population.

Little did we know that after a short 50-minute trip outside the city limits we would be treated to three days of lush tropical forests, steep, rugged climbs, remnants of traditional villages overtaken by jungle and breathtaking coast lines.

I could go on about the awe inspiring variety of landscapes and how incredible it is to watch the sun rise behind Hong Kong’s iconic islands from a secluded beach, but instead I’ll simply say that this is definitely one to add to the bucket list. I won’t lie - it was a challenging 48kms, but made so much easier by the smiling staff at every checkpoint, the spirit and comradery between the participants and of course, the cold beer at the finish line.

STERIPEN QUANTUM RAPID PURIFICATION KIT

JUSTIN WALKER DEPUTY EDITOR: 4 x 4 MAGAZINE It is the most important thing to ‘get right’ when you’re out exploring remote areas: water purification. If there’s anything that can have a dramatic and often dangerous impact on your adventure it is drinking contaminated water. And really, it is a simple thing to avoid, provided your purification method (and system) works.

SteriPEN has been in the business of keeping adventurers (and remote communities) healthy for many years, with its numerous water purification products all highly regarded around the world.

Now, the US-based company has upped its game once again, releasing a unique purification system, dubbed the Quantum Rapid Purification System. And system it is indeed; the Quantum comprises a UV purifier, a 1 Litre (L) measuring cup, a 40 micron filter, and the unique RapidUV Reservoir in a 4L capacity. The unit is powered by four AA batteries, with Alkaline offering 50 x 1L treatments: Lithium disposable 150 x 1L; and NiMH 100 x 1L treatments. The lamp on the UV purifier is rated to 3000 treatments, which equates to 12,000 litres when you take into account the 4L reservoir. SteriPEN also claims the treatment only takes 150 seconds for the full 4L – pretty impressive stuff.

The method is both ingenious and, as just stated, fast. Firstly you insert the filter into the 4L reservoir and then fill the reservoir to capacity.

Then you simply insert the UV purifier into the filter and click the purifier and away you go. Once the treatment time is complete, you remove the purifier and filter, close the reservoir lid, and then access the now-treated water via the reservoir ‘tap’ – or the ‘easy pour spout’ as SteriPen terms it.

It sounds too good to be true – especially the speed of the treatment; this is achieved via the unique inner coating of reflective material in the 4L bladder. By enhancing – or magnifying – the amount of UV

light the lamp emits via reflection, this means more light is ‘hitting’ the water at any given time, thus resulting in such a faster treatment time. It’s ingenious, really, and even more so when you think just how much 4L is for a solo hiker, and how quickly you could have 10L of treated water – not to mention how quickly you can have treated water for any number of things (drinking, cooking, etc.).

Making the whole process easier is the reservoir’s two robust handles and the wide mouth purification port – it allows a fast, effective treatment and dispersal of clean water (SteriPen claims the unit kills 99.9% of bacteria, protozoa and viruses) that, especially in an emergency situation, is always appreciated. One of the other impressive features is just how compact and lightweight the complete system is; the 4L reservoir being able to be compressed down flat also means it and the rest of the system take up minimal space in your backpack.

t all started in a small blacksmith workshop in central Stockholm back in 1892, when F.W. Lindqvist and J.V. Svenson created the world’s first soot-free kerosene stove! As it was the first, they decided to call it Primus (meaning first).

The name became synonymous with reliability and the stoves became the primary choice for people heading off on both first ascents and demanding expeditions. One of the milestone adventures was when Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911.

Another is Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's conquering of Mount Everest in 1953.

In Australia, genuine Primus products have never really been sold, instead for many years the ‘Primus” name has been used under license. In a long standing agreement these ‘licensed’ products bore no resemblance to the pioneering innovation coming from Sweden, but rather price pointed product designed for mass consumerism. Due to recent management changes, this agreement was terminated and the owners of Primus, Fenix Outdoor Limited (Sweden), approached us to take their much loved and global brand and bring it to the Australia.

Of course there is some re-education that needs to take place with consumers, however the brand already has some equity here in Australia. So while the historical Primus product may just be licensed, you’ve still got brand history to trade on while you help us re-educate the consumer. We’ll give you any tools you need, but I suspect it won’t be long after we roll out the marketing plans we have in place before consumers are coming to you, their local expert, to see the products!

We are excited to bring to market the Primus range of industry leading products and 2018 will be a phased release as we get certain certifications for the gas products, however much of what you see in the coming pages is available to order now. Our first shipment is almost here and our sales team is getting loaded up with sample products to show you.

After using three of Klean Kanteen’s Insulated stainless-steel bottles over the past couple of months, for everything from long camping trips to days riding bikes with the kids or going for a short bushwalk, I can assure you that there’s much more to these bottles than being simple ‘water bottles’.

Klean Kanteen was the first company to introduce the concept of a Food-Grade stainless-steel construction in a hydration bottle, back in 2004. These then-unique bottles hit a market that was already saturated with plastic as the preferred material of use, with all its associated problems of taste/odour retention, bacterial build-up, etc. Not to mention the immense waste problems it was (and still is) causing. The stainless-steel construction means no BPA and/or toxins in the material that houses your drinking water, plus it won’t break or rust-out (the last being a big consideration for Australia due to most of us being close to the coast).

Kanteen) that offers impressive cold and warmth retention. I have been using the big 1900ml (64oz) bottle for our camping trips for keeping drinking water cool for the kids mainly and it has worked perfectly.

Not only has the water stayed cool for long periods (Klean Kanteen claims up to 100 hours and I reckon that’s not far wrong if you store it in a shady place; the kids have had cool drink water over an entire weekend of camping from this big bopper) but the decent-sized (44mm) opening, accessed via an easy to use cap (with silicon seal), meant it was easy to control pouring of the water. That sounds like an odd thing, but after having tried to balance narrow-neck water bottles for an even flow for years, this larger opening (and Kean has an even wider-mouth range, with 54mm openings) has made it a doddle.

The other two bottles used during the testing period – the 592ml (20oz) and 946ml (32oz) – have performed just as efficiently as the larger model. The 592ml Insulated bottle has become my goto for bushwalks with the kids/by myself, and I also use it as my regular in-vehicle water source. The only small problem there has been the screw-top cap, but Klean Kanteen does offer optional cap that include a Sports Cap made for one-handed operation so that’s my next purchase.

In terms of heating, the 946ml bottle has been our preferred thermos for a hot tea when out and about. It’s even been dropped accidentally once or twice and has come through unscathed. This is

not advisable, of course, as a big dent may damage the dual-wall of the bottle, but – touch wood – these two incidents have not seemed to cause any damage.

Besides their robust build quality and the fact they work as promised in terms of heat and cold retention, one of the other standouts – and something people probably forget these days with so many plastic bottles in use – is that there are no remnants of flavour or odour in the Klean Kanteen Insulated bottles. In terms of maintenance, we have washed them in warm washing detergent (as advised) and besides making sure the lid seal is still on correctly, and leaving them to dry with the cap unattached, that’s been about it.

WE RECENTLY CHATTED WITH THE BROTHER/SISTER TEAM OF JEFF CRESSWELL AND MICHELLE KALBERER - OWNERS OF KLEAN KANTEEN - TO DISCUSS THEIR BEGINNINGS, BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY AND PLANS FOR THE FUTURE...

Why did you start down this path / what prompted you to begin making these products?

In 2004, the inventor of the very first Klean Kanteen 27oz classic bottle (Robert Seals), understood there was a real need for a hydration vessel that was safe from toxins such as BPA. At the time, there were virtually no options and Robert felt he could create a product that would make a substantial difference.

We partnered with Robert in late 2004 to help the back end of the business by performing duties such as inventory management, distribution/order fulfilment, billing and collecting, customer service and cash flow management In 2005 we entered into a time bound royalty agreement with Robert to purchase Klean Kanteen and began performing all aspects of the business from marketing and sales, to product development, sourcing and operations.

How did you come up with / fine-tune the product?

The product was initially created so that the bottle was easy to hold, easy to clean, have a wide enough mouth for ice cubes, and hold enough liquid to keep a body hydrated. From there, the market indicated we needed a wider variety of sizes, and soon after, we investigated ways Klean Kanteen products could inspire change; A variety of offerings that would decrease the use of single use products.

That remains our product focus today; to find opportunities where we can use our products and our brand as a force for good.

Who makes the product? Where? What do you know about the supply chain?

Currently we manufacture in China, in the Guangdong and Zhejiang Provinces. Over the years, Klean has researched opportunities to manufacture domestically, but unfortunately due to the cost of steel and production domestically, we would not be able to offer a competitive price point to consumers. As a result, we wouldn't be able to fulfill our mission of providing accessible, reusable solutions to replace toxic plastic and displace pollution.

We are committed to ensuring healthy, safe, equitable, and responsiblymanaged conditions with our partners in Chinaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;ongoing, evolving work that is legally and socially our responsibility as a benefit corporation. Klean works to ensure the materials and operations involved with the manufacture of our products meet industry standards for quality and safety, fair labor, ethical business practices, and environmental responsibility.

In 2012, we proudly joined the ranks of Certified B Corporations. Klean is evaluated bi-annually by B-Lab, a non-profit that assesses benefit corporations and provides an annual score card on progress. B-Corps must meet a certain standard, and ethical supply chain is an important area of the assessment. B-Corps give preference to local suppliers, and currently that is an area we are improving because we can directly affect that change.

We are a small, family-owned and -operated company in northern California with more than 30 years of history and an enduring commitment to product and service excellence. As a proud 1% For The Planet member, we’ve contributed more than $1.5 million directly to environmental organizations dedicated to preserving and restoring wild places. We support organizations that are doing vital work in the following areas: Plastic Pollution, Safe Consumer Products, Land & Water Conservation, and Environmental Stewardship. We focus our efforts on key issues that are core to who we are and what we do: access to clean water and reducing single-use waste.

What's your big dream for this business?

Our dream has never been nor will ever be about growth for growth sake or being the biggest company in the hydration/reusable space. Our dream is to continue to run our business responsibly. To take care of our family of employees, and to continue to share our knowledge and our products that enable change to happen; To create benefit for people and the places we live and play.

What's been the most challenging part of this for you?

What's been the best part?

Growing very quickly early on was very challenging. It caused everyone to wear multiple hats, and we are still feeling the growing pains of not having all the systems in place to run super smoothly. Having very high standards for our business is also a challenge, but it’s the right thing to do! The more we grow the more we have to pay attention to risk and liability. Personally, we would much rather spend our energy on inspiring others.

The best part is twofold – Running a business responsibly, doing good work that is meaningful and makes a different in this world, and being able to support non-profits that are also out doing great work is exciting.

Being out in the field and having people slap us high fives, give us hugs, and say “you guys are awesome” is truly humbling because we are just doing what we do! Lastly, we have AMAZING employees!!! They keep us on our toes, they care about each other, and they are extremely dedicated to the brand and what they do. We are inspired by them every day and we have a lot of fun!

Your headquarters is based in Chico, CA. What do you love most about the area and how do you enjoy your weekends?

Chico is located on the North East side of the Sacramento River Valley and nestled at the base of the foothills to the Cascade/Sierra Nevada mountains. The crown jewel and what we love most about living in Chico is Bidwell Park.There are miles of trail for hiking, running, mountain biking, horseback riding, and Big Chico Creek running through the park offers a refreshing relief from the hot summer months. There is nothing better than spending the weekend trail running or mountain biking and working up a good thirst for our hometown Sierra Nevada Brewing company beer. If that’s too strenuous then a nice leisure float down the Sacramento River is a great alternative.

ATKA REVIEW FOR THIS ISSUE OF THE ZEN QUARTERLY WE GAVE JUSTIN WALKER A RANGE OF PRODUCTS FROM OUTDOOR CAMPING AND SURVIVAL BRAND ATKA TO REVIEW. READ ON TO FIND OUT MORE It is always a good day when new gear arrives in my gear testing shed – especially when it includes JUSTIN WALKER delivery of some Atka products. This company DEPUTY EDITOR: 4 x 4 MAGAZINE makes some great outdoor gear, with a focus on excellent functionality and convenience, by which I mean Atka’s various products invariably are compact when stored, and lightweight but strong. In short, ideal kit for hiking, canoeing and camping when storage space (and load carrying capacity) is often at a premium. A couple of months with four Atka products – folding shovel, 15L dry bag, pocket chainsaw and pocket drop – has reinforced to this experienced tester that the brand really does know its stuff.

Atka 15L Dry Bag I am a huge fan of versatile, multi-use gear and this tough dry bag from Atka is a prime example. I divide my outdoor time between canoeing and kayaking, and day and overnight bushwalking, and this dry bag has been used in all of these activities. It even does duty as an emergency overnight clothes bag (thanks to its nylon shoulder strap, transforming it into a pseudo-duffle bag). For canoeing it has been brilliant; the heavy-duty nylon is 100% waterproof and the bag also will float if the unthinkable happens and it falls overboard. I have avoided this so far, but it’s always good to know if it does, I won’t be saying goodbye to a sinking bag full of gear…

The rolltop opening is, like the rest of the dry bag (due to the heavy duty nylon) stiff in operation the first few times it is used, but it soon became more flexible and easier to roll and clip lock. That initial rigidity is not a bad price to pay for the tough nylon exterior. The drybag has also been used to store my sleeping bag on overnight hikes; storing a sleeping bag in a drybag has always been a standard thing for me – there’s nothing worse than your backpack interior – and all its contents – becoming wet or damp during a downfall. The Atka dry bag is great bang for your bucks and is also available in other sizes, such as 10 and 20 litres.

Atka Pocket Chainsaw It has always been relatively easy to bend or snap small tree branches by hand if I have been outdoors. However, there have always been a few thicker branches that proved too strong – or too short in length to get the leverage needed to break – which makes this compact chainsaw from Atka a brilliant addition to my kit. When you first pull the chainsaw out of its metal travel tin, you do wonder just how it will go when called on to cut into some pretty tough Aussie hardwood branches, but it is actually pretty effective for what it is. The chain itself measures 710mm and the saw includes 124 bi-directional teeth, constructed of heat-treated, rust-proofed steel that is high-strength, with the claimed weight of the unit a paltry 140g. Atka claims a speed of 10 seconds to cut through a 76mm branch and I can believe that is possible – especially if you have the leverage needed. I didn’t set any speed records during the testing period but I did find the saw-teeth kept their sharpness quite well – even when I was attempting to, firstly, cut through ‘wet’ or fresh wood, and then immediately try and cut through dry hardwood. For something that you can always have stored in your backpack, or vehicle glovebox, the Pocket Chainsaw punches well above its weight in regards to both its cutting performance and outright convenience.

RRP: $69.95 Atka folding shovel This tough, stainless-steel folding shovel is an excellent example of Atka design; the stainless-steel is heavy in gauge, meaning it can take plenty of force when in use without fear of breaking. Plus, being stainless-steel it will last for many, many years – always a welcome feature when having to purchase new gear. The shovel itself opens up to 227mm – itself a handy length in terms of being able to get a firm hold or grip on the handle, while still retaining a blade long enough to actually be useful; there’s nothing worse than a too-small digging implement. The fact the shovel folds down to 135mm – and can be carried easily in either your backpack or using the supplied carry-case (with belt loop) makes it even more appealing.

WHAT DO YOU DO AT ZEN?

I am the Queensland Sales Account Manager, looking after the whole state as well as parts of Northern NSW.

WHICH ZEN PRODUCT IS YOUR FAVOURITE AT THE MOMENT?

I love the Leatherman KB and KBX knives, light and versatile. They are very handy little knives and fit well in my collection.

WHAT WAS THE BEST CONCERT YOU EVER ATTENDED?

Surprisingly Dolly Parton, I won tickets to see her in Brisbane and it was highly entertaining. I didn’t know she could rap.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD YOU’VE NEVER BEEN, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? Iceland, from all accounts one of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet.

WHAT’S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU’VE EVER DONE? I used to ride bulls; something people might say is crazy.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SEASON AND WHY (SPRING, SUMMER, ETC.) AND WHY? I am a winter baby - you can always adapt to the cold. There is something magical about a minus degree temp early in the mornings that the other seasons cannot offer.

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL WEEKEND? An ideal weekend for me would include a bbq, bon fire, good friends, loud music and a heap of laughs somewhere isolated.

WHAT DO YOU DO AT ZEN?

I'm the Fjällräven Brand Manager, which made for a extremely busy 2017. We only launched the brand last January and growth has been phenomenal but a lot of work went into it!

WHICH ZEN PRODUCT IS YOUR FAVOURITE AT THE MOMENT?

I’ve been travelling a fair bit in the last couple of weeks and the Splitpack from Fjällräven has been such a great bag to take with me. It’s a really unique design and is super durable so I can carry heavy loads comfortably – and it’s carry on size!

WHAT'S YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION?

To have more patience – to be more ‘Zen’ if you will

AT WHICH STORE WOULD YOU MAXOUT YOUR CREDIT CARD? Does a travel agency count?

IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER, WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE? Being able to fly would be super cool, but only if I’m also not limited by physical fitness, temperatures, atmosphere, pressure and everything else that might pose a problem in the sky. In that case, I’d choose instant transportation.

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL WEEKEND? Waking up in a tent in the middle of nowhere with no reception.
